This natural formation

potentially sits above
a chamber filled
with treasure.

And when you look
at that quantum map,

you have this structure
underground that
looks like this key

that runs right under
the Head of Towats.

and local lore,

but never authenticated.

Through his research,

is a representation of Towat.

at the southern end
of the Head of Towats.

Just above the keyhole
formation that the
quantum team

identified in their scan.

and look for an entrance
covered up.

that's been backfilled.

after Aztec warriors
hid the king's treasure
in Utah,

they filled in
all the entrances
to the cavern system

so that it would not
be stolen.

The cave that Chad
spotted from the air

appears to match
this description.

The team
will head to the location

with the possible
filled in entrance
to take a closer look.

That does look like
a recessed area.

It looks like it's just
been piled back up.

Like, backfilled.

Looks to be an entrance
into a back area.

So this is all soft dirt.

it goes back in there.

appears to be backfilled
with hundreds of cubic feet
of soil,

which could take weeks
to excavate by hand.

then we'll dig that ash out.

We brought in, uh,
these dynamite experts.

So they're gonna be loading up
the filled in cave entrance
that I saw with dynamite,

and they're gonna
have a controlled demolition.

a natural cave opening

that just back backfilled
with river mud.

I can make hand charges
and shoot that out

and see how much rock there is
to get up into that cavern.

the demolition team
plans to remove the top layer
of soil by hand,

and then place three
small 10-pound explosives

that will detonate

what's under there.

The idea with the dynamite is,
just to blow the loose dirt
out of the cave.

The ledge overhead
is solid rock

so the easier path
for it to go is outward.

so none of the debris

just from the shockwave.

We've got a bit
of a complication.

The force of the blast
knocked off a big chunk
of that ledge.

the dirt outward

the force of the explosion
has travelled upward,

collapsing the overhanging
rock above and covering
the area in debris.

You know, uh, I think I can
get that trackhoe down here,

that'll help us understand
if we got into
the tunnel there.

and we have tons
of rock to move,

so we're gonna
bring down the trackhoe,

take a few scoops,
get all that [bleep]
outta there.

I've been spotting for him
since I was a little kid.

I was probably like six
or seven years old.

Whenever my dad
was babysitting

he'd put me
and my sister on a crane
in this open filed,

we'd just play around
with the crane

and that was how
my dad babysat us.

If the caves
can give us access in,
it's gonna be huge.

So that's exciting as ever.

This is very likely
one of the best shots
we've had.

into the cave system,

of a bitter pill to swallow.

My guess is, this formation's
just limestone all the way
across here.

So this is sure not
their original entrance.

[Chad] That's just about
as disappointing
as you can get, right there.

[narrator] After failing
to find an entrance
to the keyhole formation

under the Head of Towats,

Duane and the team regroup
to discuss their next move.

[James] Where we're standing
is this circle.

And the false cave
is over there on the left side
of the circle cavern.

We just gotta get
some more information
to figure out our best shot.

So we can do that
by foot, right now.

Run the magnetometers over.

That can, hopefully,
go at least 60, 70, 80 feet
into the ground.

And bring us back, uh,
a pretty decent picture
of what's below us.

conducting a grid search

of the area
with a magnetometer,

a device which measure
the magnetic fields emitted
from the earth.

And can detect
geological features
and voids underground.

I think that might help, too

to maybe narrow it in,
to give us the best

noninvasive underground
picture of what we have below.

You give us a mark
and we'll bring in
the trackhoe.

track their position
above the keyhole cavern

looking for signs of a void
or anything that might suggest
a hidden cave opening.

is a painstaking

so as not to miss
any critical data
on what lies below.

-How deep does it go?
-One hundred

My magnetometer locates
differences in the localized
magnetic field.

Any reducing
in the magnetic field
means that that's a void.

And that void
could very well be
a cave entrance.

So did you find
some cool [bleep]
down in Mexico?

Yeah. I, uh, located
a metal object inside
the pyramid at Tula

with this exact magnetometer.

we did the grid pattern search
and right over here
in this quadrant,

we had an anomaly.

And if you look right here,
what it's showing is that,

there was a 38.23
meter hole of sorts.

Very small, only within
a square foot area.

It's really interesting,

when you look
at it in three dimensions.

the surface up top.

And we have what
appears to be a vertical
shaft of sorts.

If you look
at the quantum scans,

there is a cavern right
below where the shaft is.

I don't think it's natural.
I think this was man made.

If we have some type
of underground cavern system,

what are they
gonna have to do,
to be able to breathe?

-So you're saying,
that could be a vent?
-Exactly.

That may have been
a man made vent
for whatever's underground.

-To get air flow
down underneath.

of the 130 foot vertical shaft

is 15 feet below the surface.

And sits directly over
the keyhole formation below,

where the team believes
the treasure might
have been cashed.

Experts believe the Aztecs
constructed shafts
like this one

to ventilate
underground chambers.

In 2003, archaeologists
unearthed a similar

60 foot shaft
at Tenochtitlan,

the Aztec empire capital,

which is thought
to have been used
for subterranean ventilation.

[Duane] James said
he found some kind
of vent shaft

that leads some
100 feet down.

And he'll take a long
time to get down to.

Oh, I know that plateau.

-It's all hard packed dirt.
-How do we get down there?

[Duane] Once we blast
that dirt off the top,

we should be able to dig
down there and find that...

[narrator] The 15 feet
of hard-packed dirt

that covers the vent shaft
will require the explosive

power of dynamite
to crack it open.

What might take days
with a drill,

can hopefully
be accomplished
in hours instead.

If it's a small vent
with blasting effect,

that vent would close it up.

a surface blast.

Just to crack that sweet candy

with... with tiger
teeth on it.

to help them open up
a suspected
Aztec vent shaft,

leading down to a mysterious
keyhole shaped cavern.

They'll need to remove
around 15 feet of dirt,

to reach the top

a 10 foot diameter
circle pattern

with X in the middle,
marking the spot.

down at the bottom,

so we can get a good blast.

found the shaft,
the underground caverns

that were seeing
on the quantum map.

a vertical shaft of sorts.

is flooding with water.

It seems to be seeping up
from underground.

dug are all
full of water down.

is super unstable.

where Duane has attempted
to breach the caverns

With water flooding the ranch,

Duane and his team need
to reassess their plan

to excavate
the vent shaft area.

You know, maybe the snow melt,
raised the water table.

That's way too fast
for snow melt.

More like an
underground tsunami.

You know, it's a lot like,
what we see
in Mesoamerica.

It's not out of the realm
of possibility

the Aztecs created some
type of water traps
to secure the treasure.

Like a booby trap,

that they set
underground for this?

The Aztecs were
masters of creating

aqueducts and passage ways
at Tenochtitlan.

This is something they
were fully capable of doing.

were master water engineers.

Able to create
ingenious aqueducts
and flood control barriers.

They even built
their capital city,
Tenochtitlan,

in the middle of a massive
2,000 square mile lake.

Could they have used
their mastery of water

to create an aquatic trap,

at Blind Frog Ranch
to protect their treasure?

Well, whatever it is,

it's pouring water
into every hole
we have out here.

We have no dry access
anywhere inside.

But here's the deal.
This is from the quantum
map right here.

Here's where we drilled,

And it flooded.

But it also flooded
at the pond
at the same time.

What if there's a direct
connection from
the blast site to the pond?

Maybe we can get
to the keyhole cavern
from the pond.

an underwater cavern.

And a mysterious

to the cavern beneath

But previous dives
into the pond have
proven dangerous.

is too great
for Chad to risk
further exploration.

That current's coming
from the blast site.

Chad's made
an important discovery.

The underwater current
is flowing away
from the keyhole.

And toward the pond.

Which seems to confirm

that there is a connection
between the two sites.

A series of caverns
extending under the ranch,

all the way
past the pond.

[James] The current's
underground.

Means there's potentially
miles of caverns
underneath Blind Frog Ranch,

that we've yet to explore.

So, is the underground
system connected?

I've been telling
people for years,

that the answer is, yes.

And that may just
be another freakin' clue

to what's going
on underground.

That means this whole
cave system's flooded.

So, we got to find new ways
to get in there somewhere.
