I've only ever seen that in super massive black holes.

after scanning the 160-acre ranch and analyzing the images,

Stephen Leeha and his quantum team

identified an area of unusual phenomena.

I've only ever seen that in super massive black holes.

And it looks like a cave to me.

when Spanish conquistadores invaded the Aztec Empire in Mexico,

the Aztec king sent his gold and riches to modern day Utah.

Considered the ancient homeland of the Aztecs,

where it was hidden in deep underground caverns.

We're talking about eight tons of gold and treasure.

You're right about this being a really great fortress

that they can defend everything from here,

'cause I've been all over this thing and it is absolutely safe.

Where do we start?

This natural formation over here that looks like a Native American's head,

Towat.

According to local oral histories that I've researched,

the Head of Towat

potentially sits above a chamber filled with treasure.

And when you look at that quantum map,

you have this structure underground that looks like this key

that runs right under the Head of Towats.

[narrator] Towat is the Native American God of protection,

mentioned in rare manuscripts and local lore,

but never authenticated.

Through his research,

James Keenan believes the landmark he's identified on the ranch

is a representation of Towat.

The original entrance of the caverns has gotta be around this area.

So, we need to do a systematic grid search

for anything that looks like an entrance that was filled in.

at the southern end of the Head of Towats.

Just above the keyhole formation that the quantum team

identified in their scan.

It looks like a keyhole cavern is just under Chad's cave.

So I know where the cave is, it's just right around the corner over here.

So we can go down the creek and look for an entrance covered up.

We'll just look for something that's been backfilled.

after Aztec warriors hid the king's treasure in Utah,

they filled in all the entrances to the cavern system

so that it would not be stolen.

The cave that Chad spotted from the air

appears to match this description.

The team will head to the location

with the possible filled in entrance to take a closer look.

That does look like a recessed area.

It looks like it's just been piled back up.

Like, backfilled.

Looks to be an entrance into a back area.

So this is all soft dirt.

It looks like it goes back in there.

[narrator] The cave mouth Chad spotted from the air

appears to be backfilled with hundreds of cubic feet of soil,

which could take weeks to excavate by hand.

So here's what we'll do, we'll just blast this whole son of a buck out.

We'll pop that, then we'll dig that ash out.

And that, uh, powder out.

[Duane] Jack, here's where we're gonna pop the first one.

Right down in that ravine.

We brought in, uh, these dynamite experts.

So they're gonna be loading up the filled in cave entrance that I saw with dynamite,

and they're gonna have a controlled demolition.

[Jack] It looks like a natural cave opening

that just back backfilled with river mud.

I can make hand charges and shoot that out

and see how much rock there is to get up into that cavern.

the demolition team plans to remove the top layer of soil by hand,

and then place three small 10-pound explosives

that will detonate the remaining dirt outward.

We should be able to blow all this loose stuff right outta here...

The idea with the dynamite is, just to blow the loose dirt out of the cave.

The ledge overhead is solid rock

so the easier path for it to go is outward.

[Duane] If there's a hole behind all that sediment, we should blow it wide open.

It sure is damn exciting. This could be the way into our cave system.

but we wanna keep the integrity of all this,

'cause ideally this is gonna be our entrance walking in.

[Jack] And that helps direct that energy down.

to get far away, so none of the debris gets to us.

All that rock fell down just from the shockwave.

That's a lot of trash. We've got a bit of a complication.

The force of the blast knocked off a big chunk of that ledge.

[narrator] Instead of blowing the dirt outward

the force of the explosion has travelled upward,

collapsing the overhanging rock above and covering the area in debris.

You know, uh, I think I can get that trackhoe down here,

that'll help us understand if we got into the tunnel there.

[trackhoe beeping]

[Chad] We just blasted and we have tons of rock to move,

so we're gonna bring down the trackhoe,

take a few scoops, get all that [bleep] outta there.

I've been spotting for him since I was a little kid.

I was probably like six or seven years old.

Whenever my dad was babysitting

he'd put me and my sister on a crane in this open filed,

we'd just play around with the crane

and that was how my dad babysat us.

If the caves can give us access in, it's gonna be huge.

So that's exciting as ever.

This is very likely one of the best shots we've had.

Well, I was hoping we'd hit dirt in all that rock.

I've been digging the soil out,

there's no hope behind it or below it.

It's just more solid rock.

I really want to get us into the cave system, so, you know,

this is a little bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

My guess is, this formation's just limestone all the way across here.

So this is sure not their original entrance.

[Chad] That's just about as disappointing as you can get, right there.

[narrator] After failing to find an entrance to the keyhole formation

under the Head of Towats,

Duane and the team regroup to discuss their next move.

[James] Where we're standing is this circle.

And the false cave is over there on the left side of the circle cavern.

We just gotta get some more information to figure out our best shot.

So we can do that by foot, right now.

Run the magnetometers over.

That can, hopefully, go at least 60, 70, 80 feet into the ground.

And bring us back, uh, a pretty decent picture of what's below us.

[narrator] James has proposed conducting a grid search

of the area with a magnetometer,

a device which measure the magnetic fields emitted from the earth.

And can detect geological features and voids underground.

I think that might help, too

to maybe narrow it in, to give us the best

noninvasive underground picture of what we have below.

You give us a mark and we'll bring in the trackhoe.

-[Chad] Sounds good. -[James] All right.

We're gonna grid it right here.

[narrator] To preform the magnetometer search,

James and Chad first plot out a grid...

-Ten right there? -Ten right here.

...to help them track their position above the keyhole cavern

shown on the quantum scans.

We're just powering it up right now.

[narrator] James will then scan the ground in half-foot increments,

looking for signs of a void or anything that might suggest a hidden cave opening.

Come on, James, find that tunnel.

[narrator] The grid search is a painstaking

and time-consuming process.

Each step must be precise

so as not to miss any critical data on what lies below.

-How deep does it go? -One hundred and thirty-two feet.

My magnetometer locates differences in the localized magnetic field.

Any reducing in the magnetic field means that that's a void.

And that void could very well be a cave entrance.

So did you find some cool [bleep] down in Mexico?

Yeah. I, uh, located a metal object inside the pyramid at Tula

with this exact magnetometer.

-Really? -Unbelievable find.

This is odd.

[James] There has been a hole there before.

This could be really significant.

we did the grid pattern search and right over here in this quadrant,

we had an anomaly.

And if you look right here, what it's showing is that,

there was a 38.23 meter hole of sorts.

Very small, only within a square foot area.

It's really interesting,

when you look at it in three dimensions.

-[Duane] [bleep] -Yeah. So we have the surface up top.

And we have what appears to be a vertical shaft of sorts.

If you look at the quantum scans,

there is a cavern right below where the shaft is.

I don't think it's natural. I think this was man made.

-[Charlie] The shaft? -The shaft.

If we have some type of underground cavern system,

what are they gonna have to do, to be able to breathe?

-So you're saying, that could be a vent? -Exactly.

That may have been a man made vent for whatever's underground.

-[Chad] Just air flow. -To get air flow down underneath.

[narrator] The top of the 130 foot vertical shaft

is 15 feet below the surface.

And sits directly over the keyhole formation below,

where the team believes the treasure might have been cashed.

Experts believe the Aztecs constructed shafts like this one

to ventilate underground chambers.

In 2003, archaeologists unearthed a similar

60 foot shaft at Tenochtitlan,

the Aztec empire capital,

which is thought to have been used for subterranean ventilation.

[Duane] James said he found some kind of vent shaft

that leads some 100 feet down.

And he'll take a long time to get down to.

Oh, I know that plateau.

-It's all hard packed dirt. -How do we get down there?

[Duane] Once we blast that dirt off the top,

we should be able to dig down there and find that...

[narrator] The 15 feet of hard-packed dirt

that covers the vent shaft will require the explosive

power of dynamite to crack it open.

What might take days with a drill,

can hopefully be accomplished in hours instead.

If it's a small vent with blasting effect,

that vent would close it up.

Yeah. It can be a surface blast.

Just to crack that sweet candy

with... with tiger teeth on it.

-It should be okay. -We have to get in there. No matter what.

We need to get in there.

Let's get some dynamite and blow it.

So right here, when we hit it with the magnetometer,

it seems like it was some type of shaft,

-that has just been covered up over time. -[Duane] Interesting.

to help them open up a suspected Aztec vent shaft,

leading down to a mysterious keyhole shaped cavern.

They'll need to remove around 15 feet of dirt,

to reach the top of the 130 foot vent shaft.

So my plan is to do a 10 foot diameter circle pattern

with X in the middle, marking the spot.

and place dynamite charges.

and it was dry powder coming out.

And that last hole,

that's where we got the water, and it just flooded all of 'em.

I mean, this is a big problem.

Like, if these holes keep filling up water,

they'll be hard to get the dynamite down at the bottom,

so we can get a good blast.

This was dry powder when we was coming up.

before they fill with water and collapse,

the team will attempt to re-drill

and immediately insert the explosives

We started blasting right under the head of Towats.

This is exactly where James' magnetometer

found the shaft, the underground caverns

that were seeing on the quantum map.

a vertical shaft of sorts.

But we just need to clean this out.

And this whole area is flooded.

the team finds the area is flooding with water.

It seems to be seeping up from underground.

The holes the trespassers dug are all full of water down.

Water everywhere.

[Chad] This whole thing is super unstable.

[Charlie] That's ready to collapse, right there.

seems to be affecting the entire ranch.

'Cause there's just... There's more water that I've ever seen.

Those trespasser holes filled up with water

and it was... it was really, way too fast.

[narrator] The team discovers water levels rising in areas throughout the ranch.

Including the holes dug by trespassers.

And even the pond,

where Duane has attempted to breach the caverns in the past.

With water flooding the ranch,

Duane and his team need to reassess their plan

to excavate the vent shaft area.

Oh, yeah. There's no doubt something's going on here.

I've never seen that much water coming through on the system like this.

Yeah, even the guy who was drilling

said he'd never seen anything like this before.

You know, maybe the snow melt, raised the water table.

That's way too fast for snow melt.

Did we crack open a underground river or something?

More like an underground tsunami.

You know, it's a lot like, what we see in Mesoamerica.

It's not out of the realm of possibility

the Aztecs created some type of water traps to secure the treasure.

Like a booby trap,

that they set underground for this?

The Aztecs were masters of creating

aqueducts and passage ways at Tenochtitlan.

This is something they were fully capable of doing.

[narrator] The Aztecs were master water engineers.

Able to create ingenious aqueducts and flood control barriers.

They even built their capital city, Tenochtitlan,

in the middle of a massive 2,000 square mile lake.

Could they have used their mastery of water

to create an aquatic trap,

at Blind Frog Ranch to protect their treasure?

Well, whatever it is,

it's pouring water into every hole we have out here.

We have no dry access anywhere inside.

But here's the deal. This is from the quantum map right here.

Here's where we drilled, right there.

And it flooded.

But it also flooded at the pond at the same time.

What if there's a direct connection from the blast site to the pond?

Maybe we can get to the keyhole cavern from the pond.

the crew tunneled under the pond on Blind Frog Ranch

and discovered an underwater cavern.

And a mysterious timber box.

Chad, now wonders if the pond

maybe directly connected to the cavern beneath the blast site.

And that diving into the pond,

might be an alternate way into the keyhole.

But previous dives into the pond have proven dangerous.

Making Chad's proposal a risky one.

and whether there is a connection to the water flooding the energy zone,

Chad and team are preparing for an exploratory dive

into the pond cavern.

It starts sucking me, kind of down there.

[James] Chad comes out with a sopping wet tent.

How did it get down there?

Maybe one of the trespassers dropped it in their hole.

And then it went through the underground system and came up.

They're sure as heck not camping underwater.

Chad, get your ass out of the water. That's enough of this.

It sucked me in. And then I felt y'all pulling.

I think if we go back down, we can [bleep] dig a little bit out of it.

[Duane] I think you're full of [bleep]. Get out.

I know Chad well. He can handle himself.

or anybody else to get hurt.

[narrator] The danger of being swept away by the strong current

is too great for Chad to risk further exploration.

[Chad] It's gnarly now.

The risk is gone way up.

I'm scared that if I got sucked out in there, I couldn't get back out.

That current's coming from the blast site.

[narrator] However, Chad's made an important discovery.

The underwater current is flowing away from the keyhole.

And toward the pond.

Which seems to confirm

that there is a connection between the two sites.

A series of caverns extending under the ranch,

all the way past the pond.

[James] The current's underground.

Means there's potentially miles of caverns underneath Blind Frog Ranch,

that we've yet to explore.

So, is the underground system connected?

I've been telling people for years,

that the answer is, yes.

And that may just be another freakin' clue

to what's going on underground.

That means this whole cave system's flooded.

So, we got to find new ways to get in there somewhere.

You start, you finish.

We don't have a choice about quitting.

We've started this whole deal.

And we're sure as hell going to finish it.
