underground tunnel system

But Ek Balam

isn't the only ancient
civilization to do so.

The Egyptians and Aztecs

deep underground tunnels

to store their valuables
and protect their citizens
during warfare.

an entire underground city

was discovered
in Derinkuyu, Turkey,

that housed
over 20,000 people.

atop a tunnel system

A natural formation that looks
like an individual's head.
