[Chad] And my dad's got a rat hole rig

rolling down the mountain.

But Eric has more tests he wants to run

to pinpoint the exact drilling spot.

There's a lot of cooks in the kitchen right now.

Duane is jumping the gun.

If we're off just a few feet,

we're not gonna find it.

[Charlie] I shut this deal down,

my bad on that deal.

So, I'm gonna let Eric do his thing.

And I trust he'll put us right on the money.

Our final step is to bring in the Seismic survey.

That was a shocker, man. These velocities...

That's right on the money with air.

Air above water in the cave, yeah.

You know exactly where to put that rig and punch in.

that just don't seem right.

The land feels different, it acts different.

And this here is one of those places.

We think we are right on top of the cavern

right there that's dry.

So we brought the same guys

with the same rat hole rig out

and we're gonna poke another hole

and get in there today.

What they're doing is the road's

tilted like that, so we're gonna get a berm,

a dirt berm so we can level out this machine

because when they get that derrick all the way up,

there's so much leverage.

I mean, these things could fall over, tip over.

Super dangerous.

Based on the seismic survey, we believe the entrance

to the cave will be at about 80 feet below surface.

So we got a long of drilling ahead of us.

Charlie boy, we might need to unload

some of them teeth there over here

and then let them back that 24-inch auger in.

We've been out here digging all day

and so far, you know, we're just digging,

we haven't hit anything.

You know, this rat hole is moving

way too damn slow for my liking.

So I wanna switch to an auger bit.

It's not as wide, but it'll help us punch

through the bedrock faster.

It's gonna let us know that we're in the right place.

Hey, I like those rock teeth on there.

Eric, that's changing color a little bit, isn't it?

Yeah. We're making some hole now.

What we're looking for in the cave system

the type of rock we see

in all the big caves are in limestone.

And limestone is essentially old coral reef.

And then it becomes compacted and turns into limestone.

Come on, baby.

- [Chad] Oh, yeah. - [Eric] Oh, yeah.

- [whistles] Yeah. - Man, that bubbled right...

Yeah. It's highly calcareous.

The changing ground water level

could bring some of that calcium carbonate

from the limestone up into this sandstone.

What I'm hoping is we're close to top of that cavern.

Great. Great. How deep are we?

Around 53 actually.

Well, he's gaining some ground with that 24 inch bit.

So right now, we're doing good.

We've dug a couple of great big holes

with this rat hole rig before.

This time it's different.

We know... we know for sure that there's a dry cavern

about my 80 feet right below us.

And that's huge.

So if we can drop ourselves down

into a drop portion of that cavern,

then we can walk around and explore

way more than we ever have before.

And hopefully get our hands on

whatever is hidden down there.

[Eric] So, our last sample, we're back out

of that calcareous zone.

[Duane] So is it getting anything more

about, like cave material or...

No. In fact, we came out of the calcareous stuff

so it's more...

more terrestrial if you want to call it that.

At 58 feet, it become pale yellow to light gray.

It's been a long day.

Uh, I saw indications

that we may be getting close to the cavern

but, uh, but then it appeared

that we weren't as close as I originally thought.

I'm not worried yet though

because I checked the coordinates

and it looks like we're still on the mark.

Uh, you gotta understand, in Geology,

when you're drilling, you know,

it's not always predictable.

It's still drilling.

That's the good news.

You know, the dirt looks good and then it doesn't look good.

You know, I don't know what to make of this.

I'm no geologist.

But I'm sure counting on one

to make the right calculations.

we're gonna punch through tonight.

This cavern is supposed to be down there

about 80 feet.

Now we're about 65 feet and I'm not even seeing

the right signs that we're about to punch through.

[Duane] There's only so many times I could spend 20 grand

on a hole that doesn't work out.

You know, I'm a patient man but, uh,

it's running awful thin right now.

for this entrance for a long time.

I just hope for our sake and my dad's sanity

that we hit that thing early early tomorrow.

Yesterday, we got to 65 feet in depth.

But our soil samples weren't looking like

we were close to a cave.

I mean, I know Duane is worried

that we're digging in the wrong spot again.

And I don't blame him for being concerned.

He's got a lot of money riding on this.

But our testing said that we should hit that cave

at around 80 feet.

So we still have a ways to go.

[Chad] All right. Let's do it.

[Duane] Battery's dead or something.

And we have to be careful on how we move forward.

Right now, that's a very risky hole

because what we have is we have loose material

right on top a hard pan.

But, uh, we'll secure that hole

and then we'll get down there.

We know there's a cavity down there,

so what we need to do is, uh,

I'll bring the tractor in

and slat in this hole around here.

Get it like a good platform,

set some boards around this deal,

and bring the cage in.

[Duane] It's time to find out what we got down there.

but we can't jump into this dry entrance

just because it's there.

That's how prospectors and explorers

So we're gonna send a camera down the hole

and try to get a glimpse of that cavern.

We also wanna measure

the radiation level down there.

Once we collect all this information,

we'll know how to explore it.

we can have it pointing out so we can see it.

What do we need to do to check this bottom of the hole out?

Yeah, we don't wanna go down there

until we check it with a Geiger counter.

We initially targeted this area

because we saw a radiation seep

coming from the ground.

There's a spike.

Obviously, radiation is dangerous at high levels

less dangerous at low levels.

But we know it's down there

So we have to make a call just how safe it is

before we send people down into that cavern.

We'll take readings for about an hour.

- [Duane] Okay. - And that will give us

an average reading

of radiation counts down there.

That'll tell us if it's safe or not to go down there.

Okay.

[Duane] So we'll know in an hour how hot it is?

and then wait an hour.

an hour down there?

I mean, you can take instantaneous

- readings from that. - Yeah.

But with radiation, sometimes

you get these sort of waves.

And so the longer you leave it down there,

the more accurate it is.

We've done a lot of high ris work in our lives.

We have to take this very seriously.

[Eric] Yeah, it's been just about an hour.

Um, it's not such good news, boys.

So the radiation levels are coming in between

0.5 and 2 Sieverts.

It basically means you could start vomiting

and hemorrhaging pretty quickly.

And obviously, have pretty serious long-term problems.

We can't safely go down there

without personal protective gear.

You're saying we could still go down, though, huh?

We can if we wear the right gear.

These numbers are... They are too high...

To go down without protection basically.

Let's do a little homework on this one.

I agree. Yeah. Let's be careful about it.

So the next step is, um,

we'll go back and think about this,

and we'll figure out what methods to use

to enable us to get down there safely

and get back out safely.

Let's get this probe off and we'll move out.

This is not a fun game here.

So Eric, tell us what we're gonna have to do on this one.

Well, I mean, I guess the greatest issue

is the, uh, the boring caving in on us.

And so Duane, I see you've got some, uh,

some casing out there, some conduits, and...

we'll set that in there and that will at least

allow us to get down in there and not have it cave in.

Yeah, we can case the hole.

We know... we know how to do that.

In addition to all the other problems we may face,

we detected radiation in the bottom of this hole

and so to, um, mitigate that hazard,

we're gonna need to suit up.

It's called Level A suits,

they're fully encapsulated plastic suits

with supplied air.

We'll be protected from radiation,

carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide gas,

which will kill you within minutes.

The problem with these suits are

they're very hard to work in.

It's gonna be tough. It may be very hot.

Heat exhaustion could be an issue.

There's a lot of things that could go wrong.

But, um,

obviously, it's worth the risk.

But we're gonna need supplied air

and, uh, hoses going into the suits.

Chad, what do you think about the air hoses?

I mean, if we're already going 80-foot deep,

that's 80-foot right there at least.

So then, another, I mean, say, 200-foot a person.

Yeah, I think since we're going in,

let's go as far as we can...

- [Chad] Yeah. - Once we're in there.

Two hundred-foot per person,

I mean, that could get tangled up easy, though.

- Yeah. - So if we do get a kink,

it would be hard to find it,

so it's just another risk.

Biggest problem we got is our supply of air.

We need to be able to be down there

at least 20 minutes

and you got to understand, it's gonna take

at least 10 minutes for the last out.

If we can only pull you out as fast as the winch

- will pull you up. - [Duane] Yeah.

- [Jamie] A lot of danger. - Oh, well, we're this close,

we have to get in there no matter what, that's it.

The fortune favors the brave, right?

Here's what we're gonna have to do, fellas.

We're gonna get the hoist set up over the hole

and we'll be in hazmat suit

with 200-foot oxygen lines running through us.

And we'll lower three of us down into the cavern.

So Charlie and Jamie is gonna man the compressors,

I'm real excited about getting into this cavern,

but there's a lot of, uh, dangers

that go along with it.

Me and Eric have been testing the, uh, the harnesses out,

making sure the quality is good.

They're brand new, there's no rips or tears.

We need to eliminate

all the problems that could happen upfront

because this is... this is risky, no doubt.

But these look pretty good.

Good anchor point here.

Once we start getting into that cave,

things can change like that.

We've got some, uh, belaying devices,

we've got some slings and things like that.

[Chad] Right.

There's a good chance we might get some

radionuclides down there.

[Chad] We have all our monitors here or...

Once we get down there, we've got potential hazards

such as, uh, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide gas,

And so what we're doing here is

we're putting together a plan to sort of mitigate

all those hazards as much as possible.

Guys, I got some bad news.

Charlie boy is real sick.

I just dropped him off to the doctor.

We're just gonna have to move forward without him.

It's all we can do.

Charlie not being with us right now,

I mean, it kind of sucks because he's been with us

all the way until now.

But we don't wanna wait.

I mean, we can't wait anymore

because the hole is just sitting there wide open

and we don't want whoever is watching us

to beat us to the punch and see what's down there first.

I mean, we've come so far, uh, it's too risky to wait.

We have to get in there now.

So Duane, we've got some harnesses here.

- Wow. - Do they look pretty good to you?

They're gonna go around that suit?

Well, we'll have to check it.

This is the Level A is what they call hazmat.

These are good. But they present

a big, um, hazard in themselves

because we're gonna be limited as far as our mobility goes.

This deal here, it sucks.

Climbing in this [bleep] is gonna be kind of hard.

They look really tough.

The suit itself is designed to protect you from anything

from biological agents to radionuclides.

We'll also have the meters on us

- so that'll tell us if there's a lack of oxygen. - Yeah, yeah.

It'll tell us if there's H2S, it's a deadly gas,

and it'll tell us if there's carbon monoxide.

We never know what we're gonna hit

until we get in there and start getting in.

Any time you go exploring underground,

it's an extremely dangerous endeavor.

So there could be a cave in you can get lost or injured

You know, a lot of people who go underground

don't come back just for those reasons.

Obviously, we're dealing with high levels of radiation.

And it's not just that,

there's a chance that this cave system

could be part of an old mine.

One of the major causes of death in the mining industry

are pockets of gas that are trapped underground

You can't see them, we can't smell them,

and something like, uh,

one breath of hydrogen sulfide,

you're dead, as simple as that.

Get your minds around this deal, fellas,

'cause, um, there are so many things

that can go wrong.

Somebody panics down below, we're all dead.

It's nothing that I wanna do, I'll tell you that dang much.

this is gonna be a nightmare.

Worst thing about this deal is

we have three different scenarios

just add to the claustrophobia.

One, just putting your head underneath this deal

like a dadgum astronaut.

And then you got to think about the air coming in,

and dropping down into that cave.

At least, it multiplies the problem

for anybody that ever had claustrophobia.

I got a little claustrophobic.

The biggest problem is,

you just don't know who is gonna get claustrophobic

down there in those holes.

they never know.

this is something you just don't really

wanna do this every day.

I can assure you of that.

Going down the hole, there are so many things that can go wrong.

So we need to have a good solid plan.

Because if you're not ready for just about anything,
