I think we're going to need to bust those rocks up first.

We get this out.

That's where the gold is.

This could be it.

This is why we're here.

[Duane] There's some places on Earth

that just don't seem...

The land feels different.

It acts different.

And this here is one of those places.

Some say the land is trying to hold on to something.

- Aztec treasure. - Holy [bleep].

- Caverns of gold. - Look at this.

Some even say there's a buried spaceship.

Me? I've never cared much about the stories.

I just care about finding whatever the hell's

in the ground.

Big day today.

Well, today's the day we find out what's in the box.

And I have to say it wasn't easy to get in here.

We spent the last several days jackhammering rocks in the cave

trying to clear out a path.

It was hard work. And it took a lot longer than we thought.

But we got the job done.

- Got it. - You got it?

- Yeah. - Nice.

After two years' worth of work, we're finally going to see

what's in these caverns.

All signs are pointing to Montezuma's gold

that could mean billions, fellas.

When Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first met

with the Aztec King Montezuma in 1519,

he described seeing entire rooms full of gold,

jewels, and Jade idols.

Cortez then spent a year raising an army

then came back to take the city.

But when he did, the gold was gone,

and has never been found since.

Historians and treasure hunters believe it may have been taken to Utah

and buried for safekeeping.

Based on Cortez's descriptions, it is estimated that the gold alone

may be worth over $3 billion in present day.

He's a smart kid.

But, this is damn sure the most [bleep] up deal

The whole [bleep] box might be just scattered through the caves.

There's a lot of weight in that thing

and we went for the whole nine yards.

The guys put so much work into this and it's just,

uh, it's a big disappointment.

Didn't work out so good for us.

And, so, tempers flared and it got a little heated,

but we're not ready to give up yet.

We need to come up with a new plan.

That's the bottom line.

Everybody's got to get back to work.

My part of that is the geology.

So, right now, we got, we got a problem.

We got just one log out.

And we don't know what our position is.

We're going to have to move forward

and maybe piece this deal out one log at a time

or get more people coming in.

We just don't know and...

I think I may have missed something here.

These are images from the box.

The rocks inside the box are completely different

than any other rocks around here.

The structure's different, the color's different.

I mean, they look to be igneous rocks

where everything around here is sedimentary.

And so, uh...

it's definitely not rocks from the surrounding hillslope

that fell into the water and fell into the box.

These rocks look like they've been put there.

Someone brought 'em in?

- That's what you're saying? - It's what it looks like to me.

So, what's that mean?

I mean, they could be the treasure in themselves

that could be rich ore brought in and hidden for some reason.

But, you know, I don't know.

Up until now, we thought that that box

was full of Aztec gold and that the rocks on top

were just fallen in from the cave ceiling or walls.

But, after taking a really close look,

they're not the same as what the cave's made out of.

In other words, these rocks are not from here.

I mean, you don't go through all that trouble to hide something worthless.

So, maybe the rocks themselves are rich gold bearing ore

or something else really valuable.

What do we need to do?

We need to get in there and get some of those rocks.

because I thought when we pulled it apart the box,

would be all broken up.

It'd be scattered, [bleep] it would be everywhere,

but, luckily, just one log ripped and the rest was intact.

So, we're still in business.

This is years of work that's gone into this moment.

My heart's pounding.

So, let's just see what the hell we got here.

Based on the videos, Eric thinks these rocks

might be part of the treasure.

Possibly gold or something else?

[bleep], it can be diamond bearing ore we don't know.

Let's hope he's right.

[exclaims] Oh, boy.

Talk about mineralization.

- Wow. - You can see something already?

You see on this one?

The reddish and the yellow, that means iron.

And that means minerals.

It looks really good, so far.

In prospecting, there's a saying that gold rides an iron horse

and what that means is gold is typically found

alongside iron.

So, seeing a really high iron content in these rocks

is a great start.

I mean, if that box is full of gold bearing ore,

it could be worth millions, perhaps even tens of millions.

The second thing I see is it looks totally different

from anything we've seen around here.

- See the black on there? - Yeah.

That is hydrothermal alteration from an igneous source.

There isn't an igneous source here

for at least 60 miles radius.

That to me says it came from somewhere else.

Just like we suspected.

These we found inside the box.

So, I can only say that these were put there by humans.

They don't belong there naturally.

Does transporting a box that big of heavy rocks

sound that easy?

Now, that takes a lot of time and energy.

So, my thought is this has to be gold ore.

The rocks in that box look promising,

but the real moment of truth when you have ore

is when you break that thing open.

Then you actually see what's in the rock.

Here, the chunk came off.

Huh.

What is this?

- What is this? - What is that?

Look at that. Look at that.

- What is that? - That's metal.

- Yeah. - What kind of metal?

I don't know. This is very strange.

It seems to be a cylinder in there.

This is very odd.

Oh, my, look at this.

- Yeah, yeah. - What's that all about?

Look it, it's a cylinder.

That is not naturally occurring.

- You sayin' someone put it there? - Somebody put it there.

No way.

This is weird.

You just don't see a cylinder in a rock like that.

Come on, man. Look at that. Somebody drilled a hole in that rock.

It looks like it.

So when I crack open this first rock, you know,

I might expect to see some fine gold or silver in it.

But, instead, there's this, this core, this cylinder

full of shiny metal in there.

I mean, I've seen lots of crazy stuff,

but, this you just can't make this [bleep] up.

This is really strange.

Well, why the hell would it be in there?

Oh, Aztec silver. No one's ever said that.

- It's Aztec gold. - Aztec gold.

But, I'll do a quick silver test right here, right now.

Silver is malleable just like gold is,

so when I hit it with a hammer, it should flatten out.

- Nope, it's brittle. - You smashed...

- Super brittle, right? - It's brittle, It's not silver.

Oh, wow.

What the hell could it be?

Definitely not silver.

I want to break into these other rocks just to see

if they had the same thing in 'em.

Well, this is a big left turn.

You know, you could've gave me 1000 guesses to see

what was inside that box and a rock with the hole in it

with processed mystery metal was damn sure not gonna be on the list.

- Whoa, whoa. - Lookie there.

Look at, there's another plug of that.

There we go. Perfect.

Whoa, you can see it again.

So, three of three rocks that, that you picked up.

- Have it in there. - You can see that hole right there.

So, this is definitely not random or just one off.

All the rocks that Chad has pulled out so far

have this mystery metal in 'em.

And I'm willing to bet that that whole box

is filled with that same thing.

Oh, my Gosh. What the hell?

What you got there?

- This is just... - What the [bleep] going on there?

This is just wild.

This is, like it's melting.

What the hell is this?

- The metal is melting. - The metal is melting.

This is crazy.

- It's not mercury, is it? - It's not Mercury.

Mercury is a liquid at room temperature

and it doesn't solidify until about 40 degrees

below zero.

- The hell? - Look at that.

Guys, we got something really weird here.

His body heat apparently melted this metal.

I mean, this just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Duane's hand is somewhere right around 90 degrees.

Very few metals melt at this temperature.

So, guys, this is, uh, this is real strange.

Um, I need to get into this, I need to do a little bit of research

and some field analysis and I really need to dig in.

Let me set some things up, run through these processes

to come up with a positive ID

and then I'll let you know what we find.

Just got to give me some time.

You know, we were hoping that box would have been full of treasure

and it just might be.

I mean there may be just a huge value to this,

but, first, I have to figure out what the stuff is.

So, I've just got it in hot water right here.

That's all it takes to melt it.

I ran tests on those metal plugs we pulled out of the rocks

all night, trying to figure out what kind of metal that is.

I've been able to, you know, eliminate several possibilities,

but I still don't have a definitive answer for Duane and the guys.

Here it comes.

What I want to do here is a few little experiments with it

to see, you know, some of the properties of it.

I'd like to see if it forms crystals.

If it does, the shape of the crystals could help me identify

what type of metal this is.

What I would hope to see is little points, hexagonal points

or, you know, octahedral, things like that.

That you would see in other types of metals.

Basically, the way the bonds are put together

when a liquid turns to a solid,

it can tell you a clue of what that metal is.

Assuming that is, that it's a known metal.

Oh, there we go. There's a crystal, you see that?

Right on the edge.

Wow.

This is very interesting.

And one, oh, there's another one.

That looks cubic to me.

Wow.

Ooh, I think I see another one popping up there.

Look at the crystal growth there.

Six sided crystal which is hexagonal.

That's the same type of crystal you'd expect to see in a ruby.

But, obviously, this is a lot different than a ruby.

Typically, when a metal solidifies,

it'll have a distinct crystal form.

But, this metal is showing multiple crystal forms.

I mean, I'll be honest with you,

I'm a geologist, but I'm not really sure what's going on here.

You got some cameras around here?

Yeah, I've got several along the creek here.

Those rock samples showed that we could be sitting

on something very valuable here.

So, security on the ranch is a top priority at this time

especially since we know now that somebody has been watching us.

I think it walked right across here

and just walked right on top of the pond over there.

- Yeah. - And would never even see 'em.

checking on some of my trail cameras

to make sure that we don't have any more

unwelcome visitors on the ranch.

Yesterday, there was a huge dead cow there.

That cow had to weigh eight, 900 pounds.

It was just there yesterday.

What the [bleep] going on here? That's weird.

with a front end loader to, to get that

and I don't see any indication that there was anything

in here of that size.

where that cow was.

Because the cow is actually gone now,

and there's a burnt spot here.

It's almost in like a circle here.

I mean, it's like, it just disappeared right into the sky

So, if that cow was, was laying here...

- Right, right. - That grass ought to be laid down.

There was nothing to indicate anybody was here.

They wouldn't take the whole thing,

they don't eat the bones and all that,

but they would just drag some of it, different places.

This whole thing is gone

and I don't know how the hell it happened.

there's no drag marks on the way out of here.

Even with a dead truck, they'd have to drag it

to the road and pull it and get it out of here.

see if it has any of this.

First time we ever seen dead cows.

There's no marks of how the cow that died

at the bottom of this ravine was drug out to the road.

Hey, man, you know, you think, well,

did somebody come out there and are they jacking with us

or some of these people that's been doing all this silly stuff

about putting illegal cameras on us.

Could this just be another way that they're messing with us?

You know, I don't know.

But I do know we're making progress.

And we can't let whoever's doing this distract us

from our objective.

Right now, that's figuring out what the metal is.

- What did we figure out? - Well, we've been able to eliminate a few things,

but still no definitive answers.

I made a list of some of the other metals

it could be, basically...

We know it's not mercury or silver.

Another thing that came to mind is platinum,

but we can rule that out

because the melting point of platinum is 4000 degrees Fahrenheit.

This stuff melted in your hand.

- Yeah. No doubt. - So...

the other item that comes to mind is gallium.

But, gallium wasn't discovered till 1875.

So, we can rule out gallium.

So, what I'd like to do in this phase is just do a few more tests,

subjecting it to certain reagents

and I don't want the vapors to be inside.

So...

I suggest we take this outside,

hit it with some acid and we'll see what happens.

Certain metals will react to different chemicals

in different ways.

So, I'm hoping these tests can finally helped me identify

what this mystery metal is.

All right, so, I have sulfuric acid here.

Then we'll use just enough to cover.

This is some Mr. Wizard [bleep] right here.

Yeah. This is good stuff.

And, so this first experiment is going to demonstrate

how strong the surface tension is.

I'm just going to slowly roll that in.

Let's warm it up a little bit.

- What in the hell? - It wants to come back together. Yeah.

Now watch it. It'll come together.

What the [bleep], it has its own memory system.

This is crazy. I've never seen anything like this before.

I mean, it really looks like it's something out of, like, a Terminator movie.

It's like what the hell did we find down there?

All right, the next step is to use

this potassium dichromate.

This stuff is pretty nasty.

They also call this evil crystals.

- Really, why is that? - Because it'll eat right through your skin.

Oh, jeez.

Potassium dichromate is a common reagent used

to identify different elements.

Adding it to liquid metals may cause the metal

to change shape or color in different ways.

Seeing how this mystery metal reacts to it may help me identify what it is.

You do not want to get this on your skin.

And, so, I'm going to very carefully...

pick up just a few of these crystals.

And I'm going to put them on top

and we'll see what happens.

- Look at that. - Look at that. There she goes.

- It's moving like crazy. - Look at that.

- Jeez. - Like, it's a live...

- Look at it. - It's like it has a mind of its own.

Oh, my goodness.

It is fighting with these crystals.

And it's changing its surface tension.

- I'll do it a little bit more. - It's like it's rejecting it almost.

It's actually fighting with the potassium dichromate.

Look at it. It's, like, oh, like, a heartbeat look at that.

Look at how it's morphing into different shapes

as we look at it.

So, we'll let this run for a little bit more, but at this point,

I've got to say that I just don't have an answer for you yet.

I just don't know what the hell this is.

And, so, what we're gonna do is...

we'll do a few more experiments with some acids

and things...

and we'll try to come up with some answers.

if I should be excited or nervous.

I mean, I just, I can't remember the last time

it was this hard to identify a metal.

I mean, I'm confident I made a positive identification,

but this is just crazy. It doesn't make any sense.

So, I spent the last few days trying to identify this mystery metal

that we pulled out of the box.

But, what I've come up with just doesn't make any sense.

What's going on, Eric?

Hey, Duane. Hey, Chad.

Well, I feel confident I've identified the metal.

I did about 12 field tests and I can definitively say

that this material is gallium.

- Gallium? - Yeah, gallium.

Yeah, but I ruled that out initially for a reason.

Gallium isn't a naturally occurring element.

It occurs as a result of smelting

and it was only discovered as recently as 1875.

You know, we know for a fact that this box was over 500 years old.

Gallium technically didn't even exist then.

You know, this project just keeps getting weirder.

That's wild man.

In nature, gallium is never found

as a free element and cannot be found

in a substantial amount in any minerals.

It is typically created as a by-product of aluminum

and zinc production.

And the element wasn't identified until 300 years

after the fall of the Aztec empire.

Wow.

They wanted to find a box full of Aztec treasure or gold.

And, um, this definitely isn't that.

But, it's something that could be very, very significant.

I mean, this could be a historic discovery,

right up there with some of the best.

I mean, we just don't know. We need to explore this further.

So, how valuable is this stuff?

Depends on what you're using it for.

So, what is it used for?

That's the thing that I just can't wrap my head around.

It has some really, really good uses,

but they're all modern day uses.

Um, things like high efficiency solar panels.

Uh, it's a very good conductor,

something used in high tech circuitry.

When you think of what a metal is typically used

for 500 years ago.

They're using it for, for, you know,

maybe coins, maybe jewelry, things like that.

But, what good would this do?

- Got melted... Right. - It's gonna melt right off your...

- finger. - Yeah.

So, man, it just, um, it baffles me.

So, does this rule out the Aztecs?

No, hell no, it couldn't.

The Aztecs knew what the hell they were doing

and they were clearly advanced,

and they might've discovered the metal 300 years

before nobody else even knew about it.

Well, yeah, I tend to agree. I mean, we know that the Aztecs

were really efficient metal workers.

But, what the hell did they use it for?

[exhales] It's a mystery for sure.

Well, here's what we know.

Someone that knew advanced mining 500 years ago,

plus or minus...

created a new metal.

They valued it so highly that they cored out rocks,

and poured in there and use cold groundwater to keep it

- Yeah. - and they hid it deep inside that damn cavern.

And guess what?

We have two miles of these caves

and we haven't seen 1% of what the hell is in these caves systems.

Could be full of all kinds of [bleep].

What else is there though?

You know, there's only one thing left for us to do.

Yeah.

Let's just go find out.

And I don't know what the hell else is buried up under this ranch.

But I do know this is one hell of a mystery

and the answers we're looking for is not up here.

It's down in the caves,

but we've only seen less than 1% of the cave.

You know, it's, it's time to drill a new entrance

and see what else is hidden down there.

You can bet your ass there's not just one box.

There's got to be a whole bunch.
