whatever the hell's in the ground.

a bit of work to do.

Chad, what'd you find out
on that core sample?

We should be getting
the results back any day now.

I mean, if this shows
that the Aztecs built this,

that means we know we are sitting
on gold and we have to get in there.

[Duane] So we're really
picking up steam investigating

the box that somebody hid
down those caverns.

After the archaeologist said
it might be Aztec,

Chad, he, pulled a good wood
sample off the box.

I got it.

[Duane] And we shipped it
off to be analyzed.

Basically, that's gonna tell us what we're
gonna spend the next three months doing.

If the type of the wood and the age of
the wood matches up with the Aztecs,

then I'll spend every cent I have risking
our ass to pull it all out of the ground.

And if it doesn't, we'll just cross
that bridge when we get there.

Jamie, you give us an update
on what you got going on?

Yeah, sure. Yesterday was a
very interesting day for me, very.

I first looked up
ambulance companies.

Trying to find out what was going
on with the woman that was found,

uh, dead at the gate.

- [siren wailing] - I found
out that there was only one

ambulance company that
would cover a call for this area.

And speaking
with the paramedics,

there was four of them that was
working there, you know, that day.

And there was no call.

None of them knew anything.

- Wow.
- So my question is,

is, uh, if they weren't them,
who was it?

Who was it?

You know, so after that, uh, I
met with a local news reporter.

There's been some similar
circumstances all over the Uinta Valley

that seemed not quite right.

She wrote a couple of articles
just recently about stuff like this.

And she tried to publish them, put them
out there, and they were just squashed.

got published, nothing.

No article, no obituary.

Just [imitates wind blowing].

She was telling me, like, almost, like,
uh, around here, there's a bigger entity

that's controlling what kind of
information is released to the public.

So she gave me the name of a
guy by the name of Dave Miller.

So I'm gonna try to, like, connect the
dots here and see what I can find out.

we have to do, I guess, fellas,

so let's just go after it and
let's go do what we're best at.

on who's credible
and who's not credible.

And, uh, this guy Dave,
got a meeting,

according to the reporter I
talked to, he's the real deal.

He's been investigating
strange and unusual cases

throughout the Uinta Basin
for over a decade.

He's gotten a lot of people
to talk to off the record.

This reporter seemed
to think that...

Dave knows something
that could be connected

with the murder slash suicide
at the ranch.

So I'm pretty excited to hear
what he has to say.

[Dave] This story is something
that I hear all the time.

Strange cars, stone-faced
individuals come in

and they claim the body
and they move on.

Nothing said anymore.

You don't hear about it on the
news, you don't see it in the papers,

[Dave] But they're pretending
to be something that they're not.

- [Dave] And they're here investigating other things.

This is what I brought you

People in town, they knew that
there was something going on out here,

but there was a perimeter
here, everything was fenced off,

so they couldn't really see it.

And then, just one day, it's
gone and they leave this behind.

they doing out here?

Very hard to find any information
on it being here, first off.

But the name of the location
was Gravity Base Ferno.

Gravity Base Ferno.

The reports that I found,
one of them described

that they were
just tracking satellites.

Another one was they were
studying the curvature of the Earth.

And another one said that they were
out here studying gravity anomalies.

But the stories that I'm being
told from the underground

are that they were actually out
here studying the UFO phenomenon.

But this is proof
that they were here

and in just one day,
mysteriously, they're gone.

They left in a hurry,
that's for sure.

And I'm sure somebody was
not happy that they left this behind.

Not to the same scale, but
this is some Area 51 stuff.

Right in the middle of nowhere.

studying unidentified aerial phenomena

is they think that they were doing

of how they handle seeing
these things in the sky.

So we got panels that are
charging the 12-volt here.

And that's a pretty
elaborate setup.

4G, so they can control this right here.

- And so they can control this wirelessly?

elaborate [bleep] spying setup.

We come up here and
there's this elaborate setup.

Solar panels going to a camera

that can be controlled
remotely through wifi.

And so, somebody can
be in Salt Lake City

and focus this camera
on our camp,

they can focus it
on where we're prospecting,

you know, what we're collecting,
wherever the hell they want.

And this is a total breach
of our privacy.

- So at this point, they know we've disconnected it.

So they knew
that we disconnected it.

So we may expect
some visitors tonight.

looking at this point, so we
can see who comes back for it.

Because somebody's trying to

But then they're invading our
privacy, I mean, man, they're just...

It's like somebody was snuck in
and put a camera at your living room.

I mean, where does that stop at?

This tells me that somebody
with a lot of resources

is breaking the law and using
high tech gear to spy on us.

Why would somebody do that?

I think it's because we're damn
close to making a huge discovery.

The question
is who's watching us?

I don't know yet.

I'm damn sure they'll be back.

This isn't the end of this.

on this whole project

and I know you're looking
into some stuff for me,

but we need to get you to
start looking into that camera

that was mounted up there
on those rocks.

We need to find out if you can
hack into this camera system.

And see who's watching us

You're looking at that camera, you
know, to me it looked kind of military.

Somebody was trying to
put that together like that,

there's no doubt about it.

figure out what the hell this thing is.

to get to the bottom

of that dead woman at the gate,

but first, I need to see what he
can find out about that camera.

Because if somebody's
watching us,

they could jeopardize
the whole operation.

Here's some of the results.

It's about the wood sample.

Core sample out of the wood.

- [Eric] From the box?
- [Duane] Yup, yup.

- Ooh, nice.
- Ooh.

[Duane] This analysis is gonna
tell us if that box is Aztec or not.

According to the legend,

when the Spanish conquistadors
attacked the Aztec king, Montezuma,

he sent his people north
with billions of dollars of gold.

And they buried it deep in the caverns,
somewhere in Utah to keep it safe.

And that was in 1520 and the
gold's never been seen since.

So we know that the Aztecs used flooded
caves and water traps to hide things.

We have two miles
of those on the property.

[Chad] Oh, look at this.

We have petroglyphs that
look like they're showing Aztecs.

And the archeologist said the
box looks like Aztec construction.

It does look similar.

This core sample
could be the final piece.

These results are gonna tell us
when that box was put into the cavern.

And the type of tree
that was used to make it.

Now, if that matches up
with Montezuma,

we could be sitting on a huge
treasure, and we'll go after it.

No matter how much it costs
or how dangerous it is.

[Chad] Okay...

Uh, the report shows
wood is pine leiophylla.

Common known as
Chihuahua pine or yellow pine.

[Eric] These are large trees similar
to the size of the logs in the box,

Uh, though they primarily
grow in Mexico,

they also grow in many areas
of the American Southwest.

How about the, um...
The map of the distribution?

- [Chad] Ah.
- [Eric] So it does show it coming right up here.

- It does go into Utah, then.
- [Eric] Yeah. Yeah.

[Duane] Okay.

Unfortunately, the species of
the tree doesn't tell us much.

The logs could have came
from Mexico

or they could have been
chopped down right here in Utah.

But this sure
doesn't tell us everything.

[Chad] Okay, we got
radiocarbon dating results.

"Dating shows the logs were cut in the
16th century, between 1510 and 1545."

- [Jamie] Okay, so there you go.
- [man whistles]

Holy cow.

-Five hundred years ago. That's Aztecs, huh?
-[Jamie] There you go.

[Eric] Oh, my.

- [Chad] Huh!
- [Eric] Yeah.

[Chad] That's great.

[narrator] When a tree
gets cut down,

the rings in the tree stop
exchanging carbon with the biosphere,

so the radiocarbon test tells
scientists when the tree actually died.

So this test confirms that the
logs that the box are made out of

were cut down
around 500 years ago,

which matches up with
the fall of the Aztec empire,

when Montezuma is said to have
sent 8,000 Aztecs north with the gold.

[Chad] [bleep], we're linked
in with Aztecs.

-Aztecs are known for... They had a lot of gold.
-[Duane] Yes, sir.

Yes, sir.

- [Chad] Is that not crazy?
- Hey, that's great.

[Chad] We gotta get in there.

[Duane] Montezuma's gold is
probably the most searched-for gold

in the history of the planet.

And we have all these signs
pointing right here.

[Duane] I'll be darned.

And now we have a box made
from logs that was cut down

at the end of the Aztec empire.

That's right when
all the gold was sent north.

Call me crazy, but we might be
right on top of Montezuma's gold.

Here we go, fellas.
This is great information.

If this is Aztec, that means
we will spend all we need to do

to get down
to that freaking box.

- And extract it and get it up to the surface.

[Duane] Last year, we spent a
ton of money and a lot of effort,

trying to find a dry entrance at the end of
those caves so we wouldn't have to dive.

At the end of the season,
we came up short.

So I spent a lot
of time this winter

trying to figure out how
to get the box out of there.

And so I think I might have come up
with a plan so crazy, it just might work.

So, here's... Here's what
we're gonna do.

This is gonna sound a little sketchy,
and I know this is gonna be dangerous.

But for us to physically
get that box out of there,

we're gonna need to drag it out with
some heavy-ass chains tied around there.

- [Eric] Yeah.
- [Duane] The easiest way to do that is just

to lower them down
on top of the box.

We're gonna have
to bring a rathole rig in

and drill a 36-inch hole
right over the top of that box.

And then we can drop those
heavy-duty chains down there.

And Chad, you're gonna
have to come in...

We'll... We'll call this the easy
way, but it's not. I understand that.

But it'll be the more
simple way.

What you'll do is, you'll take
a tether rope in there with you,

and you'll take your tether line all the
way down, tie the chain around the box.

You'll tie off to that chain.

And then, with the trackhoe,
we'll drag this thing out.

You're gonna pull
it out laterally, then.

- [Duane] Right.
- The same way that Chad goes in.

- [Duane] Yeah.
- [Eric] You're gonna pull the box out.

Yeah. And... And because that
mountain above the pond is so steep,

we're gonna have to do a blast.

So we can get a flat spot
to get that rathole rig on top.

Eric, it's gonna be up to you to tell us how
far we need to go down to get a good pop.

- [Eric] Yep.
- The whole nine yards.

We do not wanna
fracture too far down.

- Yeah, we could, uh, stand to collapse it...
- Yeah.

and fill it up.

It'd be a little tricky, but we'll
work with the blaster and, um...

It's all about getting
that right charge.

- Good stuff. We just don't want it caving in.

We don't need any part of that.

[Eric] Duane's plan is extremely
ambitious, to put it lightly.

I mean, we're talking about
digging, drilling, and blasting.

There's a lot of moving parts
where things can go really wrong.

Especially considering that
box is over 500 years old,

and it's filled
with God-knows-what.

I've never heard of anything
like this ever being done before.

But Duane made his money in the oil
business going after these hard projects.

So if anyone
can pull this off, it's him.

it's squirrelly, I know.

But if you all kind of agree, then
we'll just go to working towards it,

because the, uh, blasting crew will be
here in two days, and we got a lot to do.

[Eric] First thing we need to do is find
the spot that's directly above that box.

Fortunately, we have
the exact GPS coordinates

from the LiDAR scan
that we took inside the cave.

This should put us
right on top of it.

[Eric] We're just about good
on our latitude here.

Should be... [exhaling] approximately
right in this direction here.

- [Charlie] We're standing on top of it?

[Eric] This is the exact spot.
Right on top of the box.

So just... Just blast and...
Getting down to it now.

If we can make a pop right here
and get down to good hardpan,

- then we can drill the rest.

Using the dynamite
is basically a much easier

and faster way
to remove that dirt,

which we need to do
to set up that rathole rig.

But it would also make drilling down
to that cavern a hell of a lot quicker.

And if we do that blast right,
it'll loosen up the earth.

I'm gonna take some readings. Uh, do
some measurements on the rock here.

I wanna get a feeling for how this
might, uh, break up when we blast it,

so I can meet you about down
at the, uh, cabin later, and--

Different rock and soil types
respond to blasting in different ways,

depending on the geological
makeup of the ground.

Knowing exactly
what this mountain is made of

will tell me exactly
which way that blast will go.

Up and out, which would
simply clear off the top layer of soil

or downward, which would
cause a cave-in below.

If that happens,
it's gonna bury that box

with half a mountain
of soil on top of it.

[sighing] Oh, man.

It's soft.
Breaks up pretty easily.

Almost by itself.

[exhales and whispers] I don't
know. I don't know.

After a little, uh, geological
study on the blast site,

I found that
it's highly fractured.

It could break up too easily.

And if we over-charge it... We
put too much charge in there,

it can jeopardize
this whole project.

Oh, man.

I do not, at all, want to risk
a cave-in above that box.

[quietly] I don't think so.

Taking all of this into account,

I may have to give
Duane some bad news.

- [Eric] Hey, boss.

Uh, I just got down off the mountain
there, where we're gonna blast.

And, um, unfortunately, I have
some, uh, not-so-good news

- to... To give you.

Uh, we're not gonna
be able to blast up there.

- Really?
- Yeah. I, um, did some measurements on that rock.

- Mmm-hmm.
- And when those charges go off,

the energy's gonna go
downward and not upward.

And so, my concern is,

uh, it might be too much
fractured when we do that blast.

And, uh, we could potentially cave in
that entire box and under tons of rock.

And so, you know,
I hate to give you this news,

and so we're gonna have
to find some other way

around that, um,
to make that drill pad,

because we've got
to do the drilling.

Can we not drop down
in shallower ways?

Drop and pop, drop and pop,

- until we get down to where
we need to be or-- - Yeah--

you still think
it's too fragile?

I think it's too fragile.

Uh, I couldn't live with myself if
we lost that hole, if that caved in,

or, even worse,
if somebody got hurt.

We're not here
to get somebody hurt,

but we are here...

But, you know, for me as a
geologist, this is what I do.

I weigh the risks, and
this is my recommendation.

harder to set that rathole rig up there.

[Duane] Well, if it's too soft,

then that big Cat
with the tiger teeth

might be able to build us a pad.

Yep. It's gonna take longer.

if we make a mistake,

and bury what may be
millions of dollars of gold,

or, even worse,
one of our team members,

that's something
we just can't live with.

Well, sure as [bleep] not the
way I thought this was gonna go.

Eric's out here for a reason. To keep
us kind of out of harm's way ourself,

and he's good at what he does.

Now we're gonna have
to get the big Cat up there,

and dig out a flat pad
for the rathole rig to sit on.

And that'll take a little time.

So we gotta get our ass in
gear, get on top of the mountain

and start building a pad.

It takes a lot to ride one of those
rathole rigs down something like this.

take this down as far as I can.

We'll back that drill
in there, we'll be flat.

But I'd rather take off the top
instead, it gives at the bottom.

need to do is create a flat area

for that drilling rig to sit on.

Those things weigh
70,000 pounds, plus or minus.

And this ridge
has a real steep gradient.

So if we don't get
this perfectly level,

that rig could tumble right
off the side of the mountain.

And that would be a disaster.

- Man, this thing just rips it, huh?
- Yeah, it does.

Just eyeballing it, it looks
like you need to go down

another two foot
or something here.

- [Duane] Copy that.
- [Eric over radio] We'll get it done.

the big day, guys.

which should be plenty to punch
into the cavern, right above the box.

And once we do, we'll
drop the chains down there.

attach them to the box.

And we'll drag it out.

All the work we've done
has gotten us to this point.

It feels like we're just one step away
from finding... I mean, who knows?

Maybe one of the biggest
treasures, literally, in the entire world.

[Duane] We know for a fact that
there's energy under the ground

that makes the equipment
go haywire.

It happens all the time.

The only thing I can do
is keep my fingers crossed

that whatever it is
will give us a break today.

[Chad] So what are we at now?

[Eric] This is a ridiculously expensive
piece of equipment that Duane has brought in.

So I'll take the opportunity to
log the material that comes up.

You never know when you
might find something valuable.

I'll be working closely
with the driller.

I'll be taking samples.

I'll be doing what's called
a boring log, and so I'm...

I'm describing all the soils in
the formation that we drill through.

Can you get me a little scoop of
that, Charlie, after he dumps it?

The cool thing about drilling is you
never know what you're gonna find.

I mean, the last time
we dug like this...

Look at that.

We found iridium.

Which, I mean, Duane could
be sitting on $3.5 million of.

- I think that's a success.

Who knows what
we can find up here.

Hey, Troy. What's the depth?

[Troy] 27.60.

- [Eric] You see the little white flecks?
- [Chad] Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I think it might be
little calcite.

At about 27 feet below surface,

I start to see these little
white flecks in the sample.

And it looks to me that those
are actual pieces of calcite.

So they could be small chunks of
the limestone that may be beneath.

Hey, Duane!

All major cave systems are
made out of calcium carbonate.

In other words, limestone.

This could indicate intermediate
layers above a cave system.

Now, I'm hoping it's 'cause we're
close to the top of that cavern.

We've already drilled
almost 50 foot.

And from our lidar scan, we
should be... We should be there.

I mean, we gotta be close
if not right on top of it.

It's showing exactly right...
Right where we're at.

Hopefully, we keep on going
and we find... Find where it's at.

If we're off a foot, I mean, we
could have to drill another 10, 20 feet.

They checked it several times
with the level going down.

It's straight, we should be
right there.

This is such an irregular,
um, cavern system.

If we're off just a...

that cavern drop.

You get into a... A formation
that has high porosity

the drill is just gonna, like,
wanna drop basically.

And so, when I see a big drop like
that, that tells us we're in the cavern.

extracting that box.

punched in at exactly the right place.

Now, we'll fire up the genny
and then, uh, put it down.

and then we are pulling it out.
