on the mountain...

‐ Man, that rain is not letting up.

lying 300 feet beneath the waterfall.

‐ We think we've got some type of void space

300 feet down.

‐ It's a long way down.

‐ It could contain what they believe

is a treasure chamber filled with gold

buried during World War II

Despite every obstacle

they've faced on the mountain...

‐ I can't even get another inch out of this thing.

...they believe the moment is near...

‐ I've never seen anything like this.

‐ ...when they can finally uncover...

The road to finding Yamashita's treasure

has been a whirlwind for John and his team.

After a scan of the mountain revealed metal deposits

300 feet below the waterfall...

‐ We have NMR proving

that there's a void space on that waterfall.

I think this is the motherlode, guys.

‐ ...John tried every possible way in...

‐ I honestly don't think the tunnel goes anywhere else.

I can't see it.

‐ ...until he was left

with one final option.

‐ I think your best bet is to come in from the side,

drilling 930 feet,

and then there's bore hole cameras

that will make it 930 feet

to see exactly what we've hit.

‐ Now, after weeks of drilling,

the team is finally just 200 feet

from hitting their target.

‐ All right, man...

‐ In just a few days,

they'll finally be able to see

into what they believe is a massive treasure vault.

But the closer they get...

the more careful they need to be.

‐ That isn't good.

We were in perfectly solid rock before,

and now there's a bunch of sand and dirt

in the end of this.

‐ The sand could be a sign of a Japanese booby trap.

‐ The Japanese were infamous for putting sand traps in.

Hundreds of tons of sand, enough to kill a man.

‐ Just as worrying,

it can also knock their drill off course.

‐ 930 feet is a really long way to go,

so all we can really do is see if we're precise,

check and double‐check it.

Then it's really up to Andrew and the drill gods

to make sure that this thing finesses straight on through.

We want to go as straight as an arrow

and go right into this void.

John's got this gut feeling that we're still on track,

but there's a margin of error here.

I'm getting pretty nervous.

‐ Rob frequently checks core samples

to make sure they haven't hit material

that could send them in the wrong direction.

‐ So as you can see, um,

it's progressively getting worse.

‐ It's like clay and sandy gravel.

We're gonna move a little further,

get another tray out,

and if it looks anything like this,

then I think it's imperative that we do a survey

and make sure that this kind of crap here

hasn't steered us way off course.

Here we go.

It's the moment of truth.

‐ That is not very good at all.

There's a fair chance that we're starting to deviate,

so we'll have to do a survey

and check where we're at at this stage.

‐ If they can't reach the site,

it could be game over.

‐ I think the worst possible scenario

is to miss the void and not know

and have to start all over in some other way.

I don't know if we have the resources left

to do this again.

‐ Running out of leads to explore on the mountain,

Rick and Bingo search

for new locations to investigate.

Bingo focuses on the 25 treasure maps

given to them by Chuck McDougald.

‐ This contains the maps that were given to me

in the Philippines.

‐ I've never seen anything like this.

‐ According to Chuck,

these maps once belonged

to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos

and are evidence of possible Yamashita treasure sites

throughout the Philippines.

The team was warned by an anonymous source

that their hunt could be deadly.

[ voice distorted ]

‐ These vast amount of money

attract people who are willing to torture.

If I were you, I would be very, very careful.

[ helicopter overhead ]

‐ The team's already experienced

unwelcome surveillance...

‐ Rick, you seeing that helicopter?

We just got buzzed.

‐ ...and taken precautions.

‐ John: We've got security posted

on every high point in this place,

and I think we're good to go.

‐ Worried their days on the mountain

could be numbered,

Bingo intensifies his search.

‐ What I'm looking for right now

is any kind of symbols, any kind of indicators

that we want to focus on specifically,

like this one clearly looks like a building.

I mean, this one says "USA" on it.

I have no idea what that could even mean.

This is the only map with a date on it‐‐

October 31, 1940.

I mean, that's prior to the war.

‐ The maps are coded and hard to decipher,

an obstacle

Chuck's treasure hunting partner Bob Curtis

knew all too well.

‐ If I were to give you one of these maps,

it would be meaningless to you.

Unless you know the fulcrum on the map,

just forget it. You'd never‐‐

You'd never be able to find it.

‐ Narrator: Earlier,

a secret informant gave Rick tapes

recorded by Curtis,

so Bingo asks Rick to review them again,

searching for any clues

to new treasure sites they can investigate.

‐ I'm still reviewing over a hundred hours of tapes

that previously belonged to Bob Curtis.

He documented treasure digging sites

all over the Philippines.

That guy was at it for 30 years.

Clearly, he knew something none of the rest of us know.

‐ According to their informant,

Marcos tasked Curtis with decoding the treasure maps,

so these tapes could contain vital leads.

‐ Watching these videotapes, it feels like we're so close.

It's here.

Just got to get this thing pinned down.

‐ The next morning,

work at the waterfall continues.

The drill is in solid rock again,

and the team could be just days away

from reaching the void.

‐ So this is exactly what we want, isn't it?

‐ All of it does. I don't see any loose stuff

in between any layer.

I'm anxious, I'm exhausted, and I'm nervous as hell

waiting to get closer and closer.

‐ Then...

John gets an unwelcome surprise.

[ beep ]

‐ Out of nowhere I get a call

from security at the front gate

to say that a government entity has showed up here,

flashed their badge,

and wanted access to the property,

which they gave them.

I don't want to push my luck with them.

‐ This is the second time

inspectors have dropped in on the team unannounced.

‐ Yeah. Falls is up and over the top.

‐ That's the plan.

‐ The increased frequency of this attention

as they near the possible treasure chamber

has everyone unsettled.

‐ We've been warned by every single person

that we've talked to about treasure hunting

that has any experience.

‐ If and when they think you've found the treasure,

they might either steal it from you

or just kill you right then and there.

‐ Rick: I'm beginning to think

it's not just a bunch of empty warnings.

It's got me unnerved at this point.

‐ At the waterfall site,

surveillance of the team's activities

is intensified,

and everyone's spooked.

‐ As we get closer and closer to this treasure,

more and more strange things are happening.

‐ In response,

John increases security at their basecamp.

‐ The last thing we need is more people showing up

uninvited to this party.

‐ Back in the U. S.,

Bingo ramps up his search

for new Yamashita treasure sites.

‐ We think we have a map of our mountain,

but there's, again, 20‐some‐odd maps here.

There could be treasure all over the Philippines.

I mean, why settle for one treasure

when we have so many more maps here

that there could be a wealth of information on here

and we just need help deciphering it?

‐ He's focused his attention on two maps...

and calls Chuck McDougald for more information.

‐ Hey, Chuck. How you doing today, sir?

‐ Good afternoon. Just fine, thank you.

‐ Hey, look, I was looking over a lot of these maps,

and we're trying to make heads or tails of any of these.

This map here.

‐ That is...

‐ The American base in the Philippines?

‐ Yes.

‐ Wow. I mean, that's‐‐

that's amazing to think

that they would even bury treasure

on an American base.

‐ At the time they buried it,

the Japanese occupied it.

‐ Narrator: Originally built in the Philippines

by U. S. forces in 1903,

Clark Air Base fell to the Japanese

during their invasion in World War II.

[ cheering ]

It became a major center for Imperial air operations,

including a launching point for kamikaze pilots.

When the Allies attempted to retake the base in 1945,

they found that Japanese soldiers had dug

a network of tunnels beneath the base

to stage their last stand.

Many believe

the Japanese fiercely defended the base

not only for strategic military significance

but because they were also defending Yamashita's treasure

buried there.

‐ The dotted line usually indicates a tunnel.

‐ The one intersecting between these two trees here, then?

‐ That's right.

The square indicates a treasure,

and whatever is on the inside of the square

will indicate what the treasure is.

I think, because of this symbol above it...

...that's gold. ‐ Wow.

‐ Narrator: Clark Air Force Base

was returned by the U. S. to Philippine control in 1991.

It operates today under the jurisdiction

of the Philippine Air Force,

excluding it

as a treasure hunting site for the team.

‐ One other question I had.

And it was‐‐Okay. Map number 14. Here we are.

Right here on top.

‐ That's the Japanese word for Intramuros,

the walled city that you go through

to get to Fort Santiago.

‐ Narrator: Built by Spanish colonials

in the late 1500s,

Intramuros was made

to protect inhabitants from attack.

When Japan invaded the Philippines

on December 8th, 1941,

just 10 hours after their attack on Pearl Harbor,

they immediately seized Intramuros.

Japanese forces would later make

one of their last stands

during the Battle of Manila here,

a last‐ditch effort to keep the city of Manila

and possibly to protect treasure buried below.

‐ This might mean a road, crossroad..

Here indicates a tunnel right here.

I don't know what‐‐ what "October 31, 1940" means,

but I‐‐I believe, if we got in that area,

and we're close,

we could find out what that means.

‐ You know, one theory I heard

is that, even prior to the war,

you know, Japan had spies in country.

Looking at this date‐‐ October 31, 1940‐‐

do you think that this could indicate

when a spy was in the Philippines,

when he identified the site to bury treasure in?

‐ Yes.

‐ Narrator: Prior to their invasion in 1941,

Japan engaged in extensive intelligence gathering

in the Philippines,

using both on‐the‐ground agents

and air surveillance

to gain knowledge of military fortifications

and the terrain

for the upcoming invasion and occupation.

Many believe this information was also used

to identify ideal treasure burial sites.

‐ Chuck, I mean, just looking at these maps,

the wealth of information here‐‐on here‐‐

there's nothing like this out there

that I've seen in any of my research

until, you know, meeting you

and seeing these maps firsthand.

You know, cities, forts, actual locations.

You know, Chuck, you've given us

a lot to think about. ‐ Yeah.

‐ I think what I'd really love to do

is get some of the guys and go to Intramuros.

‐ Just be very aware all the time

of potential booby traps.

‐ Whoo. I mean, incredible,

the fact that he was able to identify Intramuros.

The amount of possibilities it opens up for us,

is huge,

I mean, when you're dealing

with anything of this scale.

We've been warned we should be very careful

and our very lives could be at risk.

‐ Narrator: Back on the mountain,

unwanted attention from local officials

makes the team rev up their efforts.

They're determined to find treasure

before someone else beats them to the punch.

‐ I do believe that Yamashita's treasure

is in that cavity underneath the waterfall

and we just need to figure out how to get it out.

‐ To find leads,

John and Rob return to a second, smaller waterfall

they discovered earlier.

Based on the presence of symbols,

like a gorilla face

and box markers,

they believe this site might contain

an underwater tunnel

connecting to the void space they're trying to reach.

‐ Chuck: So if you look at the map,

to me, that upside‐down U

could be a tunnel entrance in the water.

‐ Considering that this is about the same elevation

as the chamber underneath the waterfall,

I think it's a long shot, but we should check it out.

‐ Narrator: They searched the water with a drone

to look for the entrance.

‐ Just kind of zigzag back and forth

sort of along that base.

Holy crap. ‐ Oh, look at that.

‐ To the right of the waterfall,

there's a little pocket back in there,

and that pocket looks like craggly rocks

that just look like they've been blown open

or something was blown up

to protect it, hide it, or cover it up.

And it could be signifying

that that was an entrance into the mountain

and they blew it closed.

‐ According to legend,

after treasure was buried in tunnels,

General Yamashita ordered the entrances destroyed...

safely concealing the contents inside.

This fractured rock may be the remnants

of such an explosion.

‐ All right, look at that rock right there.

See all the choppy edges and it looks broken up?

‐ All of them do.

‐ But the search yields nothing useful.

‐ I'm not seeing anything else.

I'm not seeing any openings.

There's nothing down there.

‐ We're not gonna be able to get in this way.

‐ Meanwhile,

Rick continues combing

through the Robert Curtis tapes.

His goal‐‐find new locations

to search for Yamashita's treasure.

After hours of listening...

...he finds the lead he's been searching for.

‐ Curtis is identifying

several of the treasure sites.

He's also identifying

a lot of the hidden landmarks that are on those sites.

‐ The description of a walled city

and the October 31 date

line up with the map Bingo found of Intramuros.

But to get answers,

the team will have to investigate these sites

in person.

‐ Rick: This could be what puts us

right on top of the gold.

‐ Bingo and Rick's research into additional treasure sites

has uncovered leads to two possible locations.

While Rob continues to monitor the horizontal drill,

John, Levi, and Geo travel to investigate.

They hope to find new places to search

and proof that the markings on the map are accurate.

‐ Between Chuck's maps and the Curtis tapes,

we have a lot of sites that we can go look at.

If we find one site that's legitimate,

it's gonna change the whole ballgame.

‐ Using the Bob Curtis audio as a guide,

John explores the 17th century landmark

San Augustin Church in Manila.

‐ This site is known as the six finger site.

One particular painting,

if you count the fingers on the hand,

you'll note that there is indeed six fingers.

‐ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

‐ Narrator: According to Curtis,

the painting is a marker

pointing to a walled‐in portion of the church

where the treasure was buried.

‐ There is an opening in the wall

that was all completely disguised during the war.

The weather in Manila has peeled off all of the plaster

and now exposed the sealed chamber.

‐ It doesn't get any more walled in than that.

Between McDougald's maps and the Curtis tapes,

everything seems to be checking out.

‐ Narrator: Meanwhile,

inside the walled city of Intramuros,

Levi and Geo use Chuck's map and the audiotapes

to head to an ancient cornerstone in the complex

known as Baluarte de San Diego.

‐ Wow. This place is huge.

‐ Curtis believes somewhere in these ruins

lies an inscription

which could point to a treasure deposit

buried at the site.

‐ There is a cavern

directly behind a series of concrete steps

that lead up to nowhere.

‐ There's a bunch of stairs leading to nowhere.

Start looking for the date.

‐ And cut into this step, the date 10‐31‐1940.

That is a central point where the map lines up.

‐ See that? Look at that, Geo.

10‐31‐40.

‐ You found it.

Wow.

‐ Narrator: Using the inscription

as a starting point,

they follow the map to a possible treasure site.

‐ I think this is the spot.

‐ You sure? ‐ I'm positive.

Look at all that rubble.

There's no way we could possibly ever do anything here, man.

There's people everywhere.

‐ I know, this is a national monument here.

‐ Yeah. I think we just need to get out of here.

This isn't worth our time, man.

We can't do anything with it. ‐ All right.

‐ After scouting both locations,

they share their findings.

‐ Any luck?

‐ Well, you know, we looked at a lot of maps,

a lot of sites.

I listened to the Bob Curtis tape

about St. Augustin Church.

You know, looked like we were in the right spot

and someone had walled up the section

where we got to go down.

We're not gonna get in there.

What are we gonna do, break into a church?

I mean, that ain't gonna happen.

‐ We were seeing the same thing

in all the sites we went to.

We found a legitimate location

that, I mean, it matched up

with the stuff that Bob Curtis was saying.

We were able to line everything up.

The issue we had here was

it's right in the middle of a national park.

‐ Well, that tells me that we've got our hands

on some really good maps here.

Everything's lining up.

‐ And everything Bob talked about in the tapes

is, like, right on the money.

Every sign or clue that he gave us in those tapes

all lined up to what we saw,

but access is nonexistent.

All the places we looked at so far

looked pretty good,

but they're inaccessible

because of the places they're at.

We need to find another location

that gives us access.

If we can do that, it may lead us to treasure.

‐ Heartened by their trip,

the team returns to good news.

After weeks of hard work,

the drill is just a few feet away

from the target depth of 930 feet,

where they hope to intersect a treasure chamber.

‐ According to the survey data, we are almost there,

and this should be the final push

to punch through.

I can't wait to see what's on the other side.

‐ After everything we've been through,

it is almost impossible to believe

that we are actually at this point.

‐ This is it, Rob.

‐ The drill is now past the target depth of 930 feet,

with no signs of hitting the chamber.

‐ That's it? We're at the end of the rod?

‐ We still got water coming out of there.

‐ Don't worry about it.

We're close. We're gonna hit it.

‐ All right.

Let's get another rod on there, then.

‐ The team extends the drill another 10 feet.

They're waiting for the water lubricating the drill

to stop flowing,

a sign they've entered the void.

‐ It's not a big deal. Not stressing over it just yet.

Rob, on the other hand,

he's just getting a little antsy.

‐ Anthony, are you feeling anything?

‐ It's the same?

Just keep watching for that water to stop!

‐ John's convinced that we're still on track,

but I'm honestly extremely concerned.

There's a lot riding on this drill hitting our target,

a lot riding on it.

All I can think about right now is‐‐

is what it's gonna feel like

to even show my face to the team

and have to tell them

that all this was a major failure

and that our one opportunity to see this treasure

isn't happening here.

All right, I guess we keep going.

‐ The team spends the next four hours

drilling deeper into the mountain.

But there's still no sign of intersecting the void.

‐ Something is wrong.

We can't just keep adding rods and adding

till we poke out the other side of the mountain.

There's got to be something wrong with our coordinates.

We would have hit it.

‐ As tension mounts at the waterfall...

‐ Now we're about 30 feet further

than we should have been.

The original estimate of the distance

has to be off.

If it was, there's still a chance we can hit it.

‐ Down at basecamp,

the search for a new treasure site

yields exciting news.

‐ Hey, Bingo. How are you?

‐ Hey, Rick. I'm good. I got some news for you.

So I was taking a look at a bunch of these maps,

and I think I've found one in particular

that's really interesting.

Now, when Chuck gave us the maps,

the majority of the ones he had

were photocopies,

and he had two originals,

this being one of them.

Are these the original maps here?

‐ Those two are the original maps.

‐ I've never seen anything like this.

‐ These maps were confiscated

from Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos's

personal office

when he was ousted from power in 1986.

It's possible this could be the only existing map

of this location

and that any treasure here remains unrecovered.

‐ That's amazing, man.

‐ Take a look at this map here.

It's shaped pretty much like some sort of island.

‐ Now, looking at this map, it looks like an island.

‐ So as you know,

the Philippines is made up

of over 7,000 islands.

I've been going through these one by one.

I was looking for any indication at all

that could lead to where in the Philippines

this corresponds to,

trying to find as close a match as possible.

And this map here?

I believe it looks a lot like Siargao Island.

‐ Phenomenal find.

‐ If you look at the features of the island here,

it has the same teardrop shape,

and then on the eastern side there's this inlet here

which matches up to current maps today.

‐ Look at that.

‐ So look, this is a pretty remote island

far away from any major cities,

700 miles from metro Manila,

so, I mean, if the Japanese were using this island

strategically, this is probably one

of the most perfect places to hide anything

because it is so remote.

‐ Narrator: Its geographic location

may be another reason Yamashita chose this island.

Siargao Island is one of the easternmost points

in the Philippines,

a straight shot to Tokyo

that made the surreptitious transportation of treasure

much easier.

‐ Bingo: You know, Siargao Island,

there's almost no mention of it in history books.

Why is that? I mean, could it be

that maybe they were hiding something there?

‐ Bingo, this is incredible news.

It could change everything for us.

There's a really good chance that treasure's still there.

‐ Back at the waterfall,

everyone's on edge.

The horizontal drill has passed

the projected treasure chamber target depth.

‐ Something is wrong.

We can't just keep adding rods and adding

till we poke out the other side of the mountain.

‐ At this point you're not gonna just back out

and start over again.

‐ One theory is that the drill is on target

but the chamber has a dome

and the angled ceiling is causing the penetration point

to be farther than expected.

‐ One more isn't gonna hurt.

‐ I hope you're right.

‐ I hope so, too.

‐ The team adds one more rod to the drill rig.

If they don't hit the void space soon,

it could mean a devastating end

to their long road on the mountain.

‐ I'm really starting to second guess

whether our survey equipment is right,

whether Andrew is on spot,

whether Max and Colin gave me the right measurements.

There's a lot of stuff running through my mind.

‐ We've put another rod on,

and I'm just watching the drill go.

At this point, I'm about ready to call it quits.

We're burning time, we're burning money,

and we're about 40 feet further than we should have been.

Actually hitting it would be a miracle at this point.

[ drill shudders loudly ]

‐ The absence of water means

they've finally reached a void space.

The team is eager to see what's hidden inside.

‐ This could be it.

Let's get the camera.

Let's get it in there ASAP.

Andrew steered that drill right on track,

and we punched through now,

and I want to see what's in there.

‐ In the Philippine mountains,

at the waterfall...

...hopeful they've reached the treasure vault

they've fought so hard to find,

the team races to look inside.

I mean, this could be it.

This treasure could be just around the corner.

We got to shove that camera down there almost 1,000 feet,

and today I'm wondering

whether I made the right choice or not.

I mean, I'm really in anticipation

of what I might see in there.

and actually be successful‐‐

nobody said it was going to be easy,

and it never is.

You know, this is seriously one of the last

great mysteries of the world to be solved.

Seeing the treasure, you know, I'm gonna be part of history.

‐ Rob: This room is really big.

‐ How much you got in there now?

‐ 13, 14 feet.

‐ I still see nothing.

‐ Hold on, hold on. There's something right there.

‐ What is that?

‐ It's the edge of something.

‐ Could be the edge of a box.

We're, like, looking down on the edge of it.

What I'm seeing in the camera right now

is unmistakably manmade objects.

The camera's picking up a smooth, flat surface

with squared edges.

You know, that's just not, uh, natural.

What's next to it? ‐ Rob: Hold on. Let me see.

‐ It looks like another one laying up against it

on the top side.

‐ Yeah. ‐ Yeah,

but it definitely looks like boxes.

Yeah. Two boxes.

You gotta get up here, you gotta see this.

‐ What do you got?

‐ The rest of the team races over

to see for themselves.

‐ Come on in there, George.

‐ Geo: Is that what I think it is?

‐ I can't believe you guys hit it, man.

‐ Rick, Steve, get in here. You guys got to see this.

‐ Oh, my gosh.

‐ Geo: You seeing that?

‐ Dude, that's incredible.

I think we've hit the treasure vault.

I think we're there.

You know, I've been waiting longer than anybody

to see something like this.

You did it, man. You got in there.

‐ We got in there. ‐ Unbelievable.

‐ Maybe what we're looking at is just empty boxes.

I don't know.

But I do know,

based on all the information that we had

in drilling to this location,

that we are underneath that waterfall

300 feet down into this void space.

We made it there,

and now we got to figure out

how do we get in there.

‐ The wooden boxes they're seeing

resemble the ammunition crates

filled with war loot

American GIs recovered following World War II.

This huge discovery lines up with the evidence

they've gathered along the way‐‐

an NMR scan that detected underground metal deposits...

a seismic scan that located a void space

300 feet below the waterfall,

and a map indicating

possible treasure on their mountain.

‐ That's an indicator that that could be treasure.

‐ Narrator: All seems to confirm

they found the boxes

their local eyewitness Grandpa claimed to have seen

carried up the mountain over 75 years ago.

It's the breakthrough John's dreamed of.

‐ This day has certainly been

one of the biggest moments of my life.

All the hard work that we've put into it.

and now the fruition is right here.

‐ But their celebration is short‐lived.

‐ Steve: Somebody knows we're here.

There's two of them.

‐ My gosh, they are looking right down here at us.

‐ That ain't good.

‐ Just spooks the crap out of me.

Um, I don't know who these people are.

I don't know what they're up to.

But they know what we're up to,

and that really bothers me.

‐ You did it, man. You got in there.

‐ We got in there. ‐ Unbelievable.

‐ Blood, sweat, and tears, and a lot of stress.

‐ At the waterfall site,

the team is elated.

‐ I can't believe you guys hit it, man.

‐ After five grueling months,

they have found solid evidence of possible treasure.

But their euphoria turns quickly to concern

when they realize they are back under surveillance.

‐ That ain't good.

‐ I don't know what we found in the void space,

but we definitely have a lot of unwanted attention.

‐ The team feels new urgency

to find a way into the mountain

to retrieve the mysterious boxes.
