[Emma] If I were an animal, I'd wanna be an elephant.

[Tim] Then you'd live in a herd.

That's what a family of elephants is called.

-[Emma] Aww. There's a baby in the group. -[trumpets]

[Emma] I'm going to call you Eli.

[grunts]

[leaves rustling]

[trumpets]

[Emma] He gets along so well with his big sister.

[Tim] Mom is on the lookout for a refreshing drink.

Did you know she can smell water from up to 20 kilometers away?

[Emma giggles] She's copying Mama.

[trumpets]

[Tim] Found the water!

-The trunk never fails. -[grunts]

-[trumpets] -[Emma] What?

Eli doesn't know how to drink?

[Tim] It's not easy. Watch their technique, Emma.

They carefully suck water into their trunk,

then pour it into their mouth.

[Emma laughs]

Or you can do what Eli does and drink right from the river.

[playful music]

[cries]

[Emma] You're too small to move the trees, Eli.

[Tim] But there's always someone around to help him out.

[grunts]

[playful music]

[Emma] When will Eli stop nursing?

[Tim] Not for another three or four years,

but he'll be nibbling on grass by the time he's two.

[cries]

[snorting]

[trumpets]

[Emma giggles] Look, Tim.

He's waving his ears like a fan.

[Tim] It's keeping him nice and cool. [laughs]

[dreamy music]

[grunting]

[light music]

[trumpets]

[Tim] Eli and his family get up early so they can start walking

before it gets too hot.

[Emma] These lions are definitely not morning people.

[shushing]

-[trumpets] -[splashes]

[Tim and Emma giggle]

[Tim] Don't you dare wake me up like that, Emma.

[trumpets]

[playful music]

[Emma] Tim, where are they going? Is it much farther?

[Tim] Eli's mom is taking them to a feeding ground.

She's teaching them where to go.

[Emma] Eli's staying close to her so he doesn't get lost.

[herd trumpets]

[Tim laughs] I love playing in the mud too.

If you were an elephant,

you could get dirty and Mom wouldn't get mad.

That's because the mud protects them from insects and parasites,

and it also helps keep them nice and cool.

[Emma] I've never seen anyone having so much fun putting on bug spray.

[snorts]

[Emma] Let's go, Eli. Time to hit the road.

[squeaking]

[giggles]

[foreboding music]

[Emma] Um, that looks pretty deep.

Do you think Eli will be able to reach the bottom?

[Tim] I don't know.

But the grown-ups'll stay close to him just in case.

Just like Mom and Dad do when they take us swimming.

[cries]

[trumpets]

[snorts]

[Emma chuckles] Look! His trunk works like a snorkel.

[snorts]

[trumpets]

-[growls] -[elephant trumpets]

[Emma] "Ugh. Them again."

[Tim] "Get out of here."

[Emma] Aww, look. A little friend for Eli.

If I were an elephant,

I'd get tired of walking and I'd want to stop and play.

[grunts]

[trumpets]

-[Tim] His mom's calling him back. -[trumpets]

[Emma] "Oh, there you are. Where have you been?"

[Eli] Wow! Good thing the herd followed Eli's mom.

This spot is amazing!

[Emma] Your family is the best, Eli.

Goodbye, elephants!

[soft music]

[Tim] If I were an animal, I'd wanna be a guillemot.

[Emma] And live on a big cliff?

[Tim] Sure! But only for a few months out of the year.

[Emma] Oh, yeah!

They fly here to lay eggs, but spend most of their time at sea.

[Tim] That's right!

They did a good job choosing a cliff, too.

This one is perfect since the seagulls can't land and steal their eggs.

[seagull squawking]

[Tim] Boo!

[calm music]

[Emma] Isn't there a cozy nest nearby?

[Tim] They don't need one! Guillemot eggs are pear-shaped,

so they roll in a circle instead of rolling away.

This one hatched!

[Emma] Look how fluffy he is.

[Emma] I'm going to call him... Augustus.

[Tim] For his first few weeks,

both his parents are going to care for him.

[chirping]

[playful music]

[Emma] Hey! Get out of here, Mr. Seagull.

Leave little Augustus alone!

[Tim chuckles] Don't worry, Emma.

His parents will also be his bodyguards.

They'll keep close watch and always protect him.

[squeaks]

[Emma] Poor Augustus looks bored.

[Tim] Not at all. He's watching.

[light music]

[Emma] Wait a second. Where's the food on this cliff?

[Tim] It's coming! Home delivery.

[Emma] Aha! He was getting hungry.

[gulps]

[rattling]

[light music]

[Tim] Augustus, your parents sure do spoil you.

[Emma] Of course!

They won't have another chick this year,

so he's their special boy.

Wow. That's a big drop.

[chirping]

[Emma] Tim, what if he wants to play in the water?

How will he get down?

[Tim] For the time being, he's too little to leave the cliffs.

Plus, he can't fly or swim yet.

He still has some growing to do.

[playful music]

[squawking]

[Emma] If I were a guillemot,

I can't wait to learn how to fly.

[playful music]

-[seagull squawks] -[Tim] Watch out!

Can't let the gulls near.

[Emma] Hurry up, move along. Nothing to see here.

[chirping]

[Tim] "Time to wash your face. Here, let me help you."

[chirping]

[Tim] Tempting, isn't it, Augustus?

Emma, did you know that guillemots can dive over 60 meters deep?

They're little deep sea divers.

Thanks to their wings and webbed feet.

[Tim] Exactly!

Look at Augustus with his big feet and little body.

[chirping]

[Emma] Um, he's pretty close to the edge.

[Tim] He just wants to join his parents.

[Emma] So when will he jump?

[chirping]

[Tim] Only when he's gotten permission.

[squeaking]

[pops]

[Tim] Wow. They picked a tall cliff to have a baby on.

[Emma] Augustus in concentrating.

I bet he's allowed to leave the nest now.

[Tim] Yup. He's three weeks old

and it's time for him to make the big jump.

[Tim] Look down there. His parents are waiting for him.

[Emma] Oh, and he's waiting for night time.

Since gulls only hunt during the day, he won't be bothered.

Are you ready, Augustus?

[calm music]

[Tim] On your mark...

[Tim and Emma] Go!

[chirping]

[Tim] What a daredevil!

[Emma] Good job, Augustus. Beautiful dive.

[quacking]

[Emma] Have a nice trip, guillemot family.

[quacking]

[impala grunting]

[Tim] If I were an animal, I'd wanna be an impala.

[light music]

[Emma] Aww, look. He was just born.

I'm going to call this little one Ivan.

First challenge, standing up.

[Tim] And mom's challenge? Washing up her wobbly baby.

The whole family is watching.

[leaves rustling]

[Emma] Vroom, vroom. Start your engines.

[playful music]

[Tim] Ivan wants to say hi to all the neighbors.

[Emma] Even the cheetahs?

Isn't that a little risky?

[Tim] It sure is.

But he doesn't know that.

[growls]

[Tim] Lucky for him, they've already had lunch.

[Emma] Hey! That little one isn't afraid of anything.

[sniffing]

[Emma] Aww.

[Soft music]

[Emma] They're playing with each other's beards?

[Tim] No, Emma.

That's how they wash their faces. They do it in pairs.

Ivan's got the hang of it. He and his cousin are all clean.

[calm music]

[calm music continues]

[Tim] The family's getting ready for dinner.

[grunts]

[Tim] That means learning to eat on your own, Ivan.

Mom will show you what to eat.

[Emma] Come on, Ivan. Try a little bit of everything.

[sniffing]

[Tim] Well, not exactly everything.

Impalas mostly eat leaves, grass, and fruits.

[groans]

[light music]

[Emma] Is that Ivan's school?

[Tim] Yup. Today's lesson, how to flee predators.

[Emma] Go!

[lively music]

[Tim] Impalas can jump a distance of ten meters

and up to three meters high.

[Emma] Wow! That's like jumping over a big truck.

So much energy.

Boink!

[lively music]

[Tim] All that jumping is making them thirsty.

Time to find the river.

[upbeat music]

[Emma] Wow! There's so many animals by the water.

[Tim and Emma laugh]

[snorting]

Ivan has to learn to stay alert when he's near the watering hall.

-[elephant trumpets] -[Emma] Hey, you scared him.

[Tim] Ivan is a jumping pro now.

He can even jump across the river.

[Emma] If I were an impala, I'd love to play leapfrog with the crocs.

[calm music]

[Tim] After a risky game like that, you get a well-earned nap.

[calm music]

[sniffs]

[Emma] Sweet dreams, Ivan.

[whimsical music]

[neighs]

[Emma] Wow.

-Ivan has three stripes on his bum. -[Tim] Yup.

He's really starting to look like a grown-up now.

[calm music]

[Emma laughs] Hey, that tickles.

[Tim] He loves it.

The oxpecker is eating the insects that are bugging him.

[Emma] What a good trade!

If I were an impala, I'd love my friend Mr. Oxpecker.

[Tim] Look. Ivan's imitating the grown-ups,

-roughhousing with his horns. -[Emma] But he doesn't have any.

[Tim] Not yet, but it's a good practice.

[Emma] All that training paid off. Now he's a pro.

[grunts]

[Tim] Ivan wins and salutes his opponent.

[thunder rumbling]

[calm music]

[Emma] Ooh. Somebody's a real charmer.

[Tim] He's strutting towards the female impalas

to show off his manly horns.

Maybe he'll find himself a pretty lady.

[Emma] See you later, Ivan.

[cat meows]

[Emma] If I were an animal, I'd wanna be a cat.

[meows]

[Tim] This little one is just two weeks old.

[Emma] I'm going to call you Katie.

[Tim] She's only been able to use her eyes and ears since yesterday.

[Emma] That's why she's having so much trouble walking.

[meows]

[light music]

[meowing]

[Tim] Cats are really good moms.

See how she's licking Katie to make her nurse?

[Emma] Gentle, Katie. Don't scratch Mama.

[Tim] Actually, her kneading helps the flow of her mother's milk.

-[bleats] -[Emma] Yes, yes.

Katie can hear you. She's over one month old.

[Tim] She can hear, see, and walk.

[playful music]

-[Emma] "Hello, my giant friends." -[bleats]

"Uh, you guys eat these stuff? Gross!"

[Tim] To Katie, it is.

That's because she's a carnivore.

[playful music]

[meows]

[purring]

[shushing]

[Tim] Good call. We should let them sleep. They need plenty of rest at this age.

[Emma] We were like that., too.

[purring]

-[alarm clock blares] -[yowls]

[Tim] Katie is so nimble at two months old.

[playful music]

-[meows] -[Emma] Tim, why is she meowing?

[Tim] That's her hunting instinct coming out.

[buzzing]

[Emma] Look, she walks around like she's the queen of the farm.

[Tim] And she goofs around, too.

[playful music]

[Tim] Still working on those hunting skills, hey, Katie?

[Tim and Emma chuckle]

[Emma] Uh-oh.

At our house, we aren't allowed to jump around on the furniture.

[Tim] She can't help it. She loves climbing.

[neighs]

[meows]

[rooster crows]

[Emma] At four months, Katie has the prettiest fur.

-Hello, Mr. Goat. -[bleats]

[Tim laughs]

Katie is a little scaredy-cat.

[Tim] "I'm going... I'm not going... Okay, I'm going."

-[bleats] -[Tim and Emma laugh]

[playful music]

[meows]

[Emma] Whoa!

If I were a kitten, I'd be a pro at climbing, too.

[Tim] And just like all cats, you'd have trouble getting down.

[Emma] No, I wouldn't!

-[Emma gasps] -[meows]

[Emma] Good landing.

[boings]

-[Emma] Oh! Katie's arching her back. -[Katie growling]

[Tim] She's feeling defensive.

[hisses]

-[mouse squeaks] -[purr]

[Emma] A little mousey. Do you think she's gonna catch it?

[Tim] Not necessarily, but she can't ignore her instincts.

-And they tell her to chase it. -[mouse squeaking]

[Emma] Aww. It's just a game.

[meows]

[sniffing]

[foreboding music]

-[purrs] -[whimpers]

[Tim] She thinks she's scaring him.

[Katie growling]

[meows]

[barks]

[Emma] "Scram, puppy. I'm the queen of this castle."

[Tim] "Okay, okay. I'm going."

[Emma giggles] What a rascal.

[Tim] Cats and dogs can get on each other's nerve.

Everyone knows they don't always get along.

[Katie whimpers]

[birds chirping]

[Emma] It's so fun to climb up in the trees.

-[Emma] Bye-bye, birdie. -[meows]

I bet Katie's looking for a new prank to pull.

[playful music]

[meows]

[sniffing]

[Tim chuckles] She sure isn't shy.

She's lucky he's friendly, too.

[whines]

[Emma] Enjoy the countryside, Katie!
