their spines act like springs when they fall,

and they poke any nosey birds that come along.

[chuckles] [Emma] Uh, Spike, you're such a klutz.

[Tim] She doesn't have the best eyes.

She mostly finds her way around by using her nose and ears.

If you rub Spike the wrong way, you get poked.

-[Emma] Wow, her paws are pretty big. -[Tim and Emma laugh]

[Emma] Someone was waiting for her at home.

[Tim] Uh, not really.

"Wrong house, ma'am."

[Emma] "What a grouch, that guy!"

[Tim] Well, hedgehogs are solitary animals,

so they don't like company very much.

[birds chirping]

[Emma] No big deal, I think she's already found another hideout.

[Tim] No luck. This is a rabbit's burrow,

and they don't wanna share either.

[Emma] Hm, there must be somewhere else.

Finally!

Sleep well, Spike.

[Tim] She's gonna sleep through the whole winter.

[snoring]

[yawns]

[playful music]

[shivers] [Emma] Do you think Spike's cold, Tim?

[Tim] No, she's built a fat reserve to keep her warm in her sleep.

Look, she's still not completely awake yet.

-[squeaking] -[Emma] Peek-a-boo, little squirrel.

[Tim] Yup, she's actually an excellent swimmer.

Her saliva has a special smell that attracts male hedgehogs.

[Emma] What? Her boyfriend's already gone?

[Tim] Well, yeah.

Hedgehogs don't live as a couple.

They only hang out during the mating season.

[playful music]

[Emma chuckles] [Emma] Why's she cleaning at night?

[Tim] Actually she's making a nest.

Just like a little bird, that's well hidden below the branches.

That means she's expecting babies.

[Emma] I can't wait to see them.

[Tim] Me too.

[crickets chirping]

[birds chirping]

[Emma] Oh, there they are, baby hedgehogs.

[Tim] The hoglets are already three weeks old.

[Emma] The hog what?

[Tim laughs] [Tim] The hoglets.

That's the name for baby hedgehogs.

[comical music]

[Emma groans] [Emma] Why's he hiding?

[Tim] He's bothered by the sunlight.

It's his first day out, and hedgehogs prefer the night.

-[Tim] "Turn off the lights, Emma." -[Emma giggles]

[Emma] Ugh! They eat snails?

[Tim] Yeah, and all sorts of other insects.

Right now, they're just starting to eat solid foods.

See that Emma? They're still nursing.

That's because hedgehogs are mammals.

[Emma giggles] [Emma] This little guy

still needs to practice rolling up into a ball.

[Tim] "Come on kids, time to head back home."

[hedgehogs squeaking]

[Emma] Goodbye, Spike. Goodbye, hoglets.

[playful music]

[Emma] If I were an animal,

I'd wanna be a lemur with a long stripy tail.

[Tim] Well then, you'd live on the island of Madagascar.

[Emma] Look, that one is all white.

Is that a lemur too?

[Tim] Yeah, those ones are called sifakas.

[lemur squeaks]

[Emma] What are the ones with ringed tails that walk on all fours?

[Tim] They're called catta.

[Emma] Wow! Those catta can really climb.

[leaves rustling]

[playful music]

[squeaks]

[Emma] Look, Tim.

She's carrying her baby like a backpack.

[squeaks]

[Emma giggles] [Emma] "Stop! It tickles!"

[Tim] Grooming's always like that when you're a baby,

but I think they love to be tickled.

[tranquil music]

[Emma] Aw, she just wants her Momma.

[Tim] Lemurs can only have one baby a year,

so that means her Mom gives her lots of attention.

And the rest of the family will always babysit for her.

Well, if she wants them to.

[squeaks]

[fly buzzing]

[Tim] Moms carry their babies on their tummies for the first week,

after that they hang on her back.

[Emma] That's good practice for when they climb trees

when they're older.

[calm music]

[leaves rustling]

[Emma] Won't they get dizzy with all that jumping around?

It's a bumpy ride.

[squeaking]

[Emma] Hmm? Why do they all have their tails up like that?

[Tim] It's so they can spot each other from far away,

just in case one of them wonders off.

[calm music]

[squeaking]

[Emma] Is she eating a cactus?

Wouldn't that be too spiky to eat?

[Tim] Not for lemurs.

To them it's a watery, tasty treat.

[playful music]

[munches]

[Emma giggles] [Emma] That's so cool.

If I were a lemur, I'd love to have picnics in the trees too.

[bright music]

[Emma] When will the babies start eating leafy greens and cacti,

like their Mommas?

[Tim] When they're about three months old,

they start nibbling on leaves and fruits.

-[squeaks] -[leaves rustling]

[playful music]

[munches]

[Tim] Yum, that looks tasty.

-[lemur squeaks] -[Tim] "Hey, can I have some?"

[munching]

[squeaks]

[Tim] Oops.

[Tim and Emma laughing]

[Tim] Look Emma, this sifaka's eating upside down.

-[leaves rustling] -[birds chirp]

[squeaking]

[Emma] Hmm, this tortoise doesn't belong here.

-[bird cawing] -[lemur squeaks]

[Emma] I don't think any of them know what to do.

[lemurs screeching]

[playful music]

[Emma] Wow, they're such good acrobats!

[squeaking]

[Tim] Lemurs are a lot like us,

they really love to play.

[animal screams]

-[Tim] Oops! -[Tim and Emma laughing]

[Emma] Look, he made himself a bed in the tree.

[Tim] The sifakas prefer to sleep high up in the forest.

[Emma] I guess the cattas prefer sleeping on the ground.

[bright music]

[Tim and Emma snoring]

[Tim] Nap time's over.

[Emma yawns]

[Emma] "But I still want to sleep some more"

I guess a grooming party's the best way to wake up.

[Tim] Oh, yeah.

And now they can look for the itchy lice.

[Emma] Ew! With their mouths?

[Tim] Yup.

Lemurs are really unique animals,

'cause they're the only ones who have special teeth

in the shape of a comb.

[Emma] I guess that's why they always look so good.

I'd wanna be one of these funny looking penguins!

[Tim] That's not a penguin, that's a sea bird,

and it's called a puffin.

[Emma] I love his colorful beak.

I'm going to call him Bill.

[Tim] Once a year, he and his partner meet up.

[squawking]

[squawks]

[Tim] Look Emma, he found their burrow,

and it looks like there is some cleaning to do.

[Emma] Oh, Bill, how did you get so dirty?

[Tim] It's okay, he still got time to wash up,

his sweetheart hasn't arrive yet.

[Emma] Looks like the neighbors are back though.

Better take a bath before she gets here!

[squawking]

[water splashes]

[Emma] There she is! She's so pretty!

[Tim giggles] [Tim] She's looking for him.

[groans]

But he doesn't see her yet.

[squawks]

[Tim] Aww.

[Emma] A sweet little kiss.

[Tim] What are you gonna call her?

[Emma] Hm... Becky.

[Emma] Aww, they're so romantic.

so this is a very special time.

He wants what's best for his family.

[Emma] I see a beak!

[groans]

[groaning]

[squawking]

[Tim] Bill is a great Dad. He's bringing his son something to eat.

[Emma] Look out!

Those seagulls wanna steal your food!

[Tim and Emma] Aww.

[seagulls squawking]

[Tim] Becky has a solution.

[Emma] It's like she's flying underwater.

[Tim] She is!

Puffins use their wings instead of their webbed feet

to swim through the ocean.

[chirps]

[Tim] All right! Mom's brought back a feast.

But those pesky gulls are still around.

They should go catch their own meal instead of mooching.

[squawking]

[Emma] Boy is Basil hungry!

If I were a puffin, I'd love to gobble down fish.

[upbeat music]

[Emma] What are Bill and Becky planning, Tim?

[Tim] It's the big day.

Basil's six weeks old now.

[Emma] Is it time for him to leave the nest?

[Tim] That's right, Emma.

[bright music]

[Tim] Puffins have a very special technique

to get their baby to come outside.

Bill and Becky haven't fed him in a few days.

[Emma] Ah, I see.

[Tim] Except they'll have to wait for night time,

his parents won't let him leave before dark.

[Emma] Why is that?

[Tim] So he doesn't attract any predators.

[Emma] Ah, fresh air.

Smells nice, doesn't it?

[Tim] She is, but she won't get there alone, Emma.

[squeals]

[Emma] Um, that's your baby not your lunch.

[Tim] Don't worry,

crocodiles have a special pocket in the back of their throat

to carry their babies in.

[Emma] Oh, so her mouth is like a stroller.

[Tim] Exactly.

[playful music]

[soft thumps]

[Emma] Is she gonna put her babies in the river?

So that means, Camille already knows how to swim.

[Tim] Yeah, it's also safer for her in the water.

-You can hardly see her. -[crocodile growls]

[Emma] You're right.

She's like a mini submarine.

You're scaring the babies.

-[Tim] Don't worry. -[growls]

Their Mom won't let anyone hurt them.

-[splashes] -[roars]

-[Tim and Emma chuckles] -[squawks]

[distant birds chirping]

[Emma] Looks like Camille is off to explore again!

[Tim] And their Mom is here to help, again.

[squeals]

[Tim chuckles] [Tim] Right back to the starting line.

[flies buzzing]

[Emma] Yes, Camille, you have pretty teeth, too.

[Tim] Crocodiles are cold-blooded.

Their body is the same temperature as the outside air.

If they get cold, they lay in the sun.

When it's hot, they open their mouths and get cooler.

[Emma] Oh, so when they open their mouths it's like a built-in air conditioner?

I bet baths help too.

[water sloshing]

If I were a croc, I'd love napping on Mom's head.

[calm music]

[thumping]

[Tim giggles]

[Tim] Camille is still a big fan of naps.

[Emma] That's Camille? She's so big!

[Tim] Yup, she's at her adult size now.

[thumping]

[Emma] Do you think her friend, the lioness,

will come and play with her in the water?

[Tim] Not a chance.

Lions feel safer on land,

like how Camille feels safer in the water.

Look she's surfing!

[Emma giggles]

[Emma] You see that?

She made bubbles, just like I do at the pool!

-[burbling] -[Tim chuckles]

[Tim] Except she can stay underwater for over an hour.

[Emma] Wow! That's impressive!

[Emma] Camille, are you making a sand castle?

[Tim] Nope. Can you guess what she's gonna do, Emma?

[Emma] Oh, she's gonna have babies of her own!

[Tim] That's right.

See? She hides her eggs in the sand to protect them.

[Emma] When are they gonna hatch?

[Tim] In two-and-a-half months.

[Emma] Aww, they're just like Camille, when she was a little baby.
