sit down in it?

What do you think of that?

Jane: Are you ready for a bath?

Good boy.

He says, "I'm ready."

Hannah: Hey, old man!

I know, what is that?

Yeah. He doesn't come out
on the glove very often.

So he may have
picked up the fact

That the only time he comes
on the glove is the river,

Gets a little excited.

Yeah, you know
where we're going.

We are taking advantage
of a nice sunny day in sitka,

And we're going to take
our two education eagles

Down to the river.

Spirit's ready.

Jennifer: Our goal with
every bird that comes to us

Is to release them
back into the wild.

But occasionally, we get birds
that can't be released,

And sometimes these birds make
great educational ambassadors

And help us teach people about
how incredibly fascinating

These creatures really are.

Hannah: Oh! He's excited.

He wants to get there.
I'm not going fast enough.

There he goes.

While they can't ever
live in the wild,

At least we can
offer them a chance

To have a little bit of that
wild behavior back,

And it's just fun to see them
be eagles really.

Jennifer: The best kind
of reward for a long week.

Sheila: It's just about
your turn, too.

Jennifer:
Well, he doesn't hate it.

That's for sure.

Jen: Oh, yay. There goes spirit!

Sheila: Good boy.

Jen: I love watching them
take baths.

I never really realized
before I started this job

That all birds bathe
in the same way.

They dip one wing,
dip the other wing.

Hannah: And then they kind of
scoop water onto their back

And slap their tail
with their wings.

Slap, slap, slap.

Jen: Spank their butts.

It's just, it's fun to watch
other birds bathe

After seeing these guys bathe,
because it's all the same.

There he goes.
That was a good spank.

Hannah: His little move
they're doing,

We call the dip and spank.

But the whole point of
bringing them down here

Is that they get to choose
what they want to do, so.

Are you coming out?

If he only wants a little bath,
then he gets to choose that.

Hi, bud. Are you all done?

Jennifer: It's great for both
the birds and the staff,

Because we're all clearly
enjoying it and getting a laugh

And gaining some perspective
in life. (laughs)

The eagles that still have
a shot at being released

Back into the wild reside
in our main flight center.

It's 20,000 cubic feet.

It's a massive space where
we're able to allow eagles

To build up their
flight skills again

And build up their strength

Before they're able
to be released.

(chirping)

And as far as we know,
and we've looked,

We haven't seen anything like it
throughout the united states.

Most eagles spend a few months
in here convalescing.

We have one eagle, however,
that has spent longer

Than any other eagle
in our history,

And his name is friar tuck.

He's very distinct because
of the lack of feathers

On top of his head.

Sometimes when the day
is wearing me down,

I like to go to
the flight center

And just watch the birds,

And I always zero in
on friar tuck first.

A gnarly-looking one-eyed eagle.

Dr. Victoria: Friar tuck has
been with us since may of 2015.

He had basically been scalped.

The skin was gone.

It was just bone.

We don't know how it happened.

Maybe it was an electrocution.

A giant burn on the top
of his head.

He was severely emaciated,
starving, barely alive...

...With a very severe
eye infection.

And we very seriously considered
euthanasia on this bird.

We removed his eye, but he had
a lot of healing to do

With this scalp injury.

It took a couple of years for
that final stage of healing

To really occur.

Four years,
very, very long time.

Now I'm faced with the question

That I'm gonna have to
mull over: Do I release him?

Do we keep him in captivity?

This one is pretty borderline.

♪ ♪

Howie: Come on, buddies.

Every spring around awcc,
it's baby season.

We have wood bison babies born,

We typically will have reindeer
babies and caribou babies born.

I just want to check
on the bison group.

We've got one calf
on the ground already,

But I'm expecting a couple more.

I just want to see
how moms are looking.

You watch him nurse, he's like
punching her in that bag.

You know, like, imagine if human
babies were like 100 pounds,

Just working on mom while
they're trying to nurse, right?

Like, that's what
that cow deals with.

And she lets him keep
coming back for more.

So if that's not love,
I don't know what is.

However, their neighbors,
the caribou,

Are a little bit
different story.

Moms are definitely
not the same caliber.

They're just like,
they have a calf,

And, like, "well, I didn't
want that, I didn't plan that."

And especially with
first-time moms,

You can almost guarantee
they're gonna be bad moms.

You can tell right away

If you're gonna have
a good mom or a bad mom,

Because a good mom will keep
the ravens off their calf.

Ravens in particular can be
nasty to baby animals out here.

A bad mom will just
kind of be like,

"oh, you're
picking on my calf? Cool."

This year, we have a new mom
in the caribou herd.

And we noticed that mom started
to get really aggressive

Towards the calf.

Once we saw that, you know,

We have to make a decision
for that calf's safety.

Anytime you pull a calf
away from mom,

You already cut the chance
of survival in half,

Because nothing's better
than mom's milk.

It's not ideal, but sometimes
you just don't have a choice.

We decided to call
this little girl luna.

We haven't had to raise
a baby caribou calf before.

This is our first one.

You know, she's grown up
a little bit,

But, man, she really hasn't
gotten that big.

She still kind of looks like
a little bit of a runt.

Kim: Luna is spunky.

She's totes adorbs!

She's so cute.

Brittany: Hi.

She gets really excited.

Kim: So luna is about
two and a half to three weeks.

She is now being
hand-raised, bottle-fed.

I know.

Good girl!

Brittany: It's still a little
bit touch and go with her.

She's not gaining as much weight
as quickly as we want her to.

The formula that she gets
is goat's milk.

It's obviously not gonna be
as great as mom's milk is,

But it's a really good
substitute for them.

Kim: That's it. All done.

What are you doing?

Brittany: She just started
pooping on her own,

So we're really
excited about that.

She was so young
when she came in

That we had to stimulate her
to actually go to the bathroom.

So, a mom would lick back there.

So we would just take
a wet paper towel

And try to just simulate

The same kind of thing
a mom would do.

Kim: Come on! Let's go. Come on.

Now we're trying to get her
back into her pen.

Come on. Come on.

Brittany: Hey! No, no, no.

Kim: She's not listening
too well right now.

Luna.

Lots of new, exciting things
going on.

Oh, lu, we'll see you
in a 4 o'clock feeding.

Be good.

Howie: Unfortunately
for this calf, you know,

Once she comes into our care
and we decide we're raising her,

We can't just put her
back into the herd

And expect everything
to go great.

So we're gonna have to keep her
separate for some time

To make sure she gets healthy
and gets big.

(phone rings)

Jane: Alaska sealife center
stranding hotline.

This is jane.
How may I help you?

We got a call about
a young seal pup.

Got separated from mom,
and at this point,

We just know that
this is an animal

That looks like it needs help.

Are you able to give it sub-q?

Could you please give it
200 mils?

Okay, bye.

So, we have a seal coming
from the homer area.

They said it's alert,
but it looks skinny.

Here we go.

Hanna: Alright. Okay.

Jane: Go team!

Let's go get a seal.

We are the only marine mammal
rehabilitation center in alaska,

So our little facility is
responsible for a coastline

That's equal to the coastline

Of the whole continental
united states.

Hanna: Homer is
a couple hours away.

The drive is a risk
for a sick animal,

But we are the only place

That will be able to
rehabilitate this animal.

So the benefit of him
getting here

Outweighs the risk
of taking that drive.

Jane: Here we go.

Hi!

We have a tiny little seal,
dehydrated.

Because usually their eyes
aren't goopy,

They're really wet.

Alright. Want to get him out?

Hi.

♪ ♪

Got a wound on his right flipper
that looks rather deep.

Let me look at the face.

So we look for the basics.

Got some teeth coming in.

So probably a week old or so.

Getting an idea
of what sex she is.

It looks like we have another
girl to add to the group.

Good for you. You bite.

You show everyone
you're fierce.

So we'll give her a little
hydration under her skin.

And we'll give her some
hydration in her belly.

Alright. Let's put her in
the kennel and go to seward.

(pup cries)

It's good that she's here

And we have medical staff
that can work on her.

You know, she needs
to get over the stress

Of being abandoned
or separated from mom.

(pup cries)

The next 24 hours are gonna be
very critical for this animal.

Jane: We're bringing in a seal
pup rescued from homer, alaska.

Colby: Weighing in at 7.35.

(pup cries)

Jane: What we found is that

She's definitely
very dehydrated, very skinny.

Alright, her temperature
is 100.4.

I think she's maybe
around a week old,

But we'll have the veterinarians
determine that.

So normally, you want them
to have like a wet mask

Around their eyes that shows
that they're well hydrated

And producing good tears,
but she's all crusty,

So that's a big sign that
she's not well hydrated.

Her lungs sound okay.

(pup moans)

So this is the wound
we are concerned about,

Pretty deep slash there.

So there's definitely
an infection going on there.

We're gonna start her with
some injectable antibiotics,

Which should help.

She has fight in her,
but she is weak.

If this was a normal
harbor seal,

She would not be
sitting here like this.

Colby: Harbor seals are like
the puppies of the ocean.

Alright, girl.

But she's just had
a long trip here.

These animals are
coming in to us,

A lot of them are abandoned
by their mothers.

We are here trying to
piece them back together.

It's the ones that
make it in the end

That make it all worthwhile,
for sure.

Jennifer: Look at all
the calendars! They're here!

Alright. I'm just gonna borrow
this one for a minute, okay?

Alright. Thanks.

Our resident raptor calendar
has arrived,

And jen cedarleaf did
all the work involved,

So I'm just gonna surprise her.

Look what arrived!

Jen: Oh, cool!

Jennifer: Your calendar!

Jen: I've been waiting for days.

Jennifer: It's beautiful.

Jen: Sweet!

Hannah: Aw, pele.

Jennifer: And that's your onyx.

Jen: Aw.

Hannah: I like that he's
for October, that's appropriate.

Jen: I know, I put an owl
last year, so I wanted an owl.

Hannah: He looks comfy,
you can't see his nostrils.

I like that.

Jennifer: Oh, okay.
That's a relaxed...

Hannah: Yeah, yeah.
That's a chill owl.

Jennifer: Excellent. Cool.

We get really attached to some
of our favorite residents,

And it's fun to be able
to feature them

In a calendar like this.

Alright. Cool!

So, yeah, now
we can talk business

A little bit, talk shop.

Jen: Okay. We need
to figure out our...

Jennifer: Potential candidates
for release.

And I see at least four eagles

That are flying
really, really well.

Jen: Yeah.

Jennifer: That doesn't
necessarily mean they're ready.

Jen: So our candidates
I think are sword, pioneer...

Jennifer: Okay.

Jen: Bruiser.

And possibly friar tuck
at this point.

Jennifer: Really?!
Jen: Yup.

Jennifer: Oh, wow.
Jen: His head looks amazing.

Jennifer: That's awesome,
'cause friar tuck's been around

For as long as I've been here.

Jen: We've never really had
anyone longer than friar tuck

In rehab.

Kind of a big deal.

We were honestly worried

That he couldn't
regulate his temperature,

Because he didn't have
those feathers on his head,

But he's lived four winters
in main flight,

And he's done
absolutely fine, so.

Jennifer: Yeah.

Jen: But I think
he's flying great.

I'd rather give him
a chance out there.

Jennifer:
He does fly really well.

I've always had a soft spot
for friar tuck.

And now he's the next eagle
we might be able to release?

Just definitely excited!

Keeper:
You got a whole mouthful.

Is it yummy?

I love you, buddy.

Kim: So right now we're going
to go in with our reindeer herd.

Brittany: People are
always asking, like,

What's the difference between
reindeer and caribou?

They are pretty much
the same species.

Reindeer are just kind of

Domesticated versions
of caribou.

Howie: Caribou is wild
in alaska.

They haven't been bred
for thousands of years

To be habituated to life
with people.

Keeper: Give him a nice snack.

Brittany: With the caribou herd,
we're a lot more distant.

They're really not
that personable.

Howie: You know, they don't
really want to hang out with us.

They don't want to be near us.

They want to be caribou
and do their own thing.

Brittany: Our reindeer
are just super friendly.

It's a lot more fun
to work with them.

Oh, here comes chuckles
and neville.

We have three reindeer that come
up to us on a regular basis.

One is neville.

Neville has a blue tag
in his ear.

Got you, bud.

Then there's springsteen
and there's chuckles,

And they're our two
more dominant males.

Chuckles is a sweetheart.

Come on.

Good job, bud.

Kim: And here's your banana.

Brittany: He's just got
a really large rack

And he doesn't have brakes.

Kim: So he just gets
all up in your space,

And then you just have to try
not to get hit in the face.

Brittany:
He's not spatially aware.

So, like, he just hits it
on everything.

(thunk)

Kim: Um, he, and he gets
really pushy.

You just kind of stay
out of his way.

Brittany: How you feeling today?

Neville, he's
a pretty curious reindeer.

Today, I'm trying to train him
to walk on a halter

So he can be a part
of our education team.

You're okay.

He's about three years old,

And that makes him in
his kind of teenage years.

He's getting a little bit
more moody sometimes.

But, yeah, he's definitely
a teenager,

And he starts to act like one
every now and then.

No touching the reindeer,
but he is gonna come out.

This is one of his first walks
out around a lot of people.

Come on.

So right now, the goal is
to get him trained up

For the 4th of July parade
in a nearby town.

When he's walking nicely,
then that's what I want,

And so that's what I reward.

Good job, bud.

So, like, the gator went by
and he didn't freak out,

Which is awesome.

So we're trying to get him
used to crowds and vehicles,

So that he is calm and ready
to walk, come parade day.

Good job, bud.

And I think he's ready.

Neville, that was rude.

We'll find out.

Howie: In the six weeks since
luna's been rejected from mom,

She's gained 20 pounds,
so she's growing really well.

We can finally relax
a little bit

That I think we've saved her
successfully.

Keeper: Hi. Hi, luna.

Howie: She's transitioned
onto the formula really well.

Her fecals indicate that
she's doing really well.

Kim: So we are going
to put up another fence

So that she has a double fencing

That makes the squares
smaller for her.

Howie: I'm just kind of dolling
up the fence a little bit,

Make sure she can't stick
her head through anything,

And that way she also
doesn't hurt herself

On any of the wires.

Kim: Hi, luna.

But please don't eat
the flowers off my shoes.

Alright. Last zip-tie.

Hi, sweetie.

And we're good.

You get to run around now, luna.

Brittany: So my goal for luna
is to hopefully

Make her an education caribou.

I would love to be able
to take her on walks

Just like I take our reindeer
on walks.

Right now, it's super important
to get her really used to people

And get her used to
us touching her.

Good job.

Because if we want to do
anything like hoof trims

Or injections,

Just to be able to get our hands
on her in general.

So a lot of tactile with her,

Touching her legs,
touching her face,

Because sometimes they have
antler issues or eye issues.

Luna?

Howie: We really need
to start thinking

Of the what's next for luna.

Brittany:

she's with a herd.

So we need to figure that out

I'm preparing onyx's diet.

Onyx is our resident
common raven.

He was actually shot by someone.

The damage to his left wing was
so severe that he can't fly.

So he cannot be released
back into the wild.

So it's up to us to step in

And provide a really healthy,
happy lifestyle.

Sheila: A little bit
of junk food

To go with all
the healthy stuff.

Britainy: Yeah!

Sheila: Up here in alaska,

Ravens are one of
the smartest birds

You're going to encounter.

Ravens can get bored.

So if he gets bored, he might
start plucking out his feathers,

Turning his feathers into toys.

So we try and provide him with
as many objects as possible

Just to play with.

Fill that up with cheetos.

Britainy: Oh, yeah.

Sheila: Make him work
for his food!

Britainy: Yeah!

Sheila: You can also
stick one in here.

Britainy: Oh, yeah.

Sheila: Let's put a red one
in there.

Britainy: You know,
it keeps them amused.

It's kind of one of my favorite
parts of the job

Is thinking of new ways
to trick him.

He literally gets his food
on a silver platter.

Spoiled bird.

He really knows that
when I come in here,

That means it's dinnertime
and also fun time!

It's not often that you get
to play with your dinner,

But if you're onyx, you do.

He actually has a wild mate
that will come and visit him,

And he'll actually trade bits
of his diet we give him

For wild delights from her.

So now that we've given onyx
his meal for the day,

I'm going to give him some space

So he can just continue to
have fun and party on in here.

Howie: So today, we've got
the big parade in girdwood.

It's not a really big parade,
girdwood's a pretty small town,

But it's our community and
we like to go out and support.

We have the forest fair going on
for the 4th of July weekend,

So neville's on parade.

We've been working really hard
with neville.

But, you know, you never know
how an animal is going to react

To clowns on tricycles
and forest fairies.

Brittany: It is neville's first
time, and I think he's ready.

We'll find out.

Austin: No way!

Howie: He'll think
you're one of him!

Austin: I'm not wearing that.

Howie: You can even bend them
and like break one

So it looks like
you belong with him.

Austin: Oh, here, wait.

Howie: Expect antlers.

The fire trucks
are all lined up.

We bring up the end and we throw
candy and everybody loves it.

Brittany: At the very beginning,
he was a little antsy.

But then once we got
into the groove of things,

He was totally cool,

And we found a nice rhythm
of treat, walk, treat, walk.

It's a lot to expect
of a teenager

To really keep it together.

But for his first walk,
he did really, really well.

Definitely a successful,
awesome day.

I'm super proud of him.

Forest fair is done
for another year.

Howie: Neville did such
a great job with the parade.

It kind of got us all thinking,

That we have little lonely luna
by herself.

She's a herd animal.

She relies on a herd
for companionship.

Austin: Get out of there!

Howie: And since
he's an ambassador,

And luna's going to be
an ambassador someday,

Think it would be great
if we could team them up.

We'll kind of make our own
internship program,

But reindeer style.

We'll put them together.
He'll show her the ropes.

Dr. Kathy: Good job, buddy.

He says, "I'm hungry, I'm cold."

So we're gonna start
with this little sand eel.

Colby: Yeah, absolutely.

Jane: We named our
harbor seal rescue ugashik,

Which is a river
in the aleutians.

And we call her uggy for short.

Colby: She's looking
really good.

Jane: She is gaining weight

And the wound on her flipper
has healed.

She's starting to reach
her milestones,

Making her a potential
release candidate.

But we do have a new concern.

Dr. Kathy: So in our routine
blood work that we did

As part of our normal
weekly examination,

We noticed that
there was an increase

In one of the liver values

That is specific for
the waste system of the liver.

Colby: Very alert,
aware of her surroundings.

(growl)

She's got good, strong vocals.

Dr. Kathy: Okay, I'm gonna
go ahead and dim the lights.

Jane: It's like a mystery.

You know, maybe the animal
has a gallbladder stone.

And then the other one,
it could be a side effect

Of one of the medications
she's been on.

Dr. Kathy: We're gonna
check out her abdomen,

Get an ultrasound,

And just get a better feel
for what's going on with her.

Hi, little girl.

You're a funny little guy,
that's for sure.

(pup groaning)

You are a wiggle worm.

(groan)

Dr. Kathy: I know. Just relax.

So what I'm not seeing

Is a big, mad gallbladder.

I'm also not seeing like
a slam dunk stone.

(pup groans)

I know, my dear.

Okay, so.

Hmm.

Maybe this is a case where

She had a different type
of response to the antibiotic.

Alright, my dear,
we're just gonna put this

Right over your eyes.

I know.

So my thought is if she's having
bilirubin elevation,

That we can potentially
use uv rays

And try and drive that down.

Then we can wrap her up
and take her for a little walk.

So, how many of us have had
a child that's become jaundice,

And they put your kid
under a bili lamp?

So we're trying to utilize
that same thing,

But our bili lamp is the sun.

So we're actually trying
to use our natural rays

In alaskan skies on
a beautiful day like this

To try and drive
the alternative pathway

So that we're not pushing all
of her waste through the liver,

But trying to activate
what we can

To be eliminated
through the kidneys.

Colby: Hey, she's gonna feel
much better now.

Dr. Kathy: I think
that should help her out.

Jennifer: It's release day
at the alaska raptor center,

And the community always
comes out in force

For these special events.

We take birds that
were on death's door

And release them
back into the wild.

And now friar tuck
is one of them!

He holds the record for
the longest rehab bird

That we've had.

From the very beginning,
I've been watching him.

Not in a creepy way.

(laughs)

It's been a real pleasure
seeing his progression,

Since I started
two and a half years ago.

He just got kicked off the best
perch, down, down to the ground.

He's looking really dapper
in there.

Yeah, we're really
gonna miss him,

But we're excited for him to get
his shot back in the wild.

A lot of eagles
have come and gone.

But, you know, and sometimes
I can't tell who's who,

But I can always spot him,
he's, he's pretty distinct.

He is flying beautifully,
and he's ready.

It won't be the same.

But this is what it's all about.

he'll be on his way to freedom.

I'm trying to give her
half of her feed right now.

Jessica: Sunshine really seemed
to do the trick for uggy.

She's doing great.

She's gaining weight,
she's eating whole fish!

She's going into the water
after them,

And she's eating them all
on her own like a big girl.

And then we are getting
out of the way

So she is not associating
that feeding process with us.

So we're trying to diminish
that human-food association.

You are big!

Jane: Since uggy's
doing so well,

We're gonna do something special
with her today.

We're gonna introduce her
to our other harbor seal

From homer, fritz.

Fritz was found alone
on a beach.

It looks like he was premature
and separated from his mom.

We're gonna put them in the same
pool, we call that a party pool.

Normally, seals are rather
solitary animals,

But they will come together
for hunting and for mating.

And so since we have the
opportunity of having two seals

From the same area,
we're gonna put them together

And let them have
some interactions.

We have uggy in the pool.

Now let's bring in fritz.

Alright, here comes
our other guy.

It's gonna be a chance for
those two to learn to interact

With other seals
as well as to compete.

Jessica: And it looks like fritz
got them going,

Got one of the fish.

Jane: Or is that, is that uggy?

Jessica: She's still trying
to figure it out.

She sees it on the skimmer.

Oh, no.

Oh, don't let it go!

Jane: She got it.

And she's ready for more.

They're just doing
their tug-of-war thing.

Jessica: So it's really cool
to see them kind of competing,

Like they're kind of
squabbling around now,

Both going after the fish.

Oh. Now he's after it.

Oh.

Yay!

It's definitely
a very proud moment

To see that all the good work
that we're doing here

So we can help seals and return
them back to the wild.

He's got a full belly now.

And I think that's it,
they're done.

But, yeah, it looks like
they're doing good!

Howie: They flirt all the time.

He loves it.

Our little baby girl, luna,

She's doing really good,
she's gaining weight.

But she is really lonely.

So it's got us scheming up
some ideas,

And we think we've got
an idea that will work.

Brittany: Nevy-nevs!

Howie: Don't say that.

Nevy-nevs?

Brittany: Yup.

Hi! What are you doing?

Howie: Look at that chunk.
Brittany: I know.

Howie: Since neville
is an ambassador,

And luna is going to be,

I think it would be great
if we could pair them together.

Howie: Neville's a bro.

He's part of our little
frat club in the reindeer pen.

And sometimes making new friends
can be really weird,

Especially in this, it's kind of
an arranged friendship.

So I'm not saying it'll be
love at first sight,

But I'm hoping it will at least
be friendly at first sight.

Brittany: So we just want
to make sure

That there's no
negative reactions

From either one of them
before we make them roomies.

There's nothing worse
than a bad roommate.

Hopefully neville will
do all the dishes.

I know. You got to keep coming.

We've already walked neville
by several times,

So they're not total strangers.

No. She's right there.

They did some nose boops,
nose kisses,

Just kind of checking each other
out a little bit.

The next step would be actually
let neville come into the pen

And get some one-on-one time
with her.

Howie: So we're just really
gonna have to watch

Neville's behavior

And make sure he doesn't get
a little crazy town on us

And go after luna
for any reason.

I'm not sure
he's super stoked about it,

Just by the prancing
and running around.

Brittany: Neville is just
running around the pen,

Not paying attention
to luna at all.

Neville!

Brittany: Running out of breath

Just trying to find
where his friends are.

Howie: He's definitely
already missing the bros.

Brittany: Yeah.

Howie: Well, I think nevs is
thinking that he's been removed

From his bro club and he's been
brought into the lady scene.

Brittany: We're asking him
to make friends with her,

But he's like,
"I don't even know her."

Just being a little nutty.

She kind of found me where I was

And was just like,
"hey, what's going on?"

There's a giant reindeer
running through her home.

Howie: Luckily, I know neville's
a sucker for alder leaves,

So it's like kryptonite
for an angry neville.

He'll calm right down.

He's too bro'd out.

Brittany: Yeah.

Howie: Boy. It's like
you could see the click

Where he was like,
"where's chuckles?"

Brittany: Yup. Yeah.

Howie: "and why am I not
with chuckles?"

Brittany: But he wasn't like,
I mean, they're standing here

Together, and he's not doing
anything to her, at least.

Howie: Yeah.

Brittany: I think we just
got to--nope, just kidding.

Howie: Oh, was that
some jealousy?

Brittany: It was a big no-go.

He is 100% a herd animal.

He loves his bro chuckles,
and that's where he wants to be.

So we're not looking
to stress anyone out,

So we're scratching that plan.

We're just gonna have to come up
with something else.

Howie: Apparently, you weren't
bro-out enough for him.

It's okay, we still love you.

Jane: I'm checking in
on fritz and uggy,

These are our two seals
from homer.

They did have their challenges.

Fritz came to us premature,

So he had health problems
with that.

And then uggy, she was
dehydrated and emaciated,

And so we had challenges
with that, too.

They've met weight.

They've shown they can hunt.

So plan is let's catch these two
for their release.

Jessica: Yeah.
Jane: Let's go do it!

Jessica: This is the last time
I'm doing this to you,

I promise.

I am gonna miss her.

She's definitely the best seal
we have, biased opinion.

Oh.

Kc: You love her, don't you?

Jessica: I do.
She's my absolute favorite.

But she's going back
to her home,

So it's where she needs to be.

Look at those eyes.

Fritz is cute, too, for sure.

So it's really amazing
to see fritz

Kind of like this final stage
of the process.

He did so well.

Jane: And since these guys
are from homer,

We try to release our animals
back into the area

Where they came from.

Jessica: Next stop, homer.

Jane: So we are going to
load them up in our truck,

And get on the road.

Kc: Aren't they cute?

Kara: There you go!
(laughs)

Jennifer: We've been working up
to an eagle release,

Which is happening today.

Friar tuck.

The other eagles,
they come and go,

And sometimes
I don't know who's who,

But I could always spot
friar tuck.

Zack: Gonna get some eagles.

Kara: Get them! Yay!
Hannah: Yay, eagles!

Kara: Eagles! Eagles!

Hannah: Let's do it to it!
Kara: Alright, let's go!

Hannah: How about
you two go up and...

Jen: Birds that have been here
a long time, like friar tuck,

Know that when someone comes in

With leather coats on
and the big nets,

That something bad
is going to happen.

Kara: This is tuck right here.

Woman: Oh, if you can

Jen: He doesn't really realize
that today is a big day for him.

He's going to get to go
back out into the wild.

Kara: It's kind of just chaos.

Jen: They just figure

Kara: He is not wanting
to be caught today.

Dr. Victoria: (bleep)
are you kidding me?

Kara: We're trying to catch
friar tuck in main flight,

So we can release him.

Friar tuck's been here
for a long time,

So he's definitely a pro.

He is not wanting
to be caught today.

He's evading us like a champion.

I thought we had him!

Dr. Victoria:
Oh, you're kidding me!

Kara: But he just
got away from us.

Come on, friar tuck!

Britainy: Incoming!

Kara: The good thing is, is we
definitely know they're ready

When we can't catch them.

Kara: There's your other foot

This release is
definitely be one

The whole team will want to see,

Zack: We finally got him.

Kara: Finally got him.

Howie: Mom, look at
my new friend.

Brittany: We tried to bring
neville back to live with luna.

It was a big no-go.

Neville got really stressed out
to not be with the herd,

Which is totally normal
for a herd animal.

But we do want luna to be able
to be with other animals.

She has already been rejected
from her own herd,

From the caribou.

So we're gonna try to bring
luna to neville.

Hopefully the reindeer will be
a little more accepting.

Howie: Hi, I'm luna!

Brittany: I think she'll enjoy
having some reindeer friends.

Howie: I'm hopeful.

Brittany: Definitely a chance
that they might not accept her.

Who knows what they'll do when
she's a new person in the group.

I'm a little nervous.

Howie: You want to go with them?

Here comes neville!

Fatty pants mcgee.

Okay, we'll take the halter off.

Oh, god, neville. Oh.

What do you think, luna-lun?

Brittany: And so far everything
seems to be going well.

They aren't like being
her best friend or anything.

Howie: Now you're a reindeer!

Brittany: But they're not
bothered by her presence there

At all, which is awesome to see.

I think neville will be
more tolerant of luna,

Just because
he's got his herd bros,

And he's gonna be happy there,

So he's not as, like,
weirded out by her presence.

I know it's super beneficial
for her to be with the herd.

I think she's always gonna be
a little bit of the odd one out,

Kind of like the little,
odd little duck

Over here by herself.

Hopefully she still comes to me
when we go in there,

To be my best friend still.

Jessica: Both these guys
stranded in the homer area,

So we wanted to return them

Kind of close to where
we had found them.

And so here we are
at bishop beach

To release two of our seals!

Kc: Fritz and uggy
met their milestones,

So they should be
very successful seals.

Jane: And would you mind
climbing in there

And getting my boots, please?

We have a lot of people here
today, which is awesome

To have the community come out
to celebrate the seals.

Homer is really proud of their
animals, just as seward is.

Kc: They're ready to go
back out to the ocean,

Find some fish, have a snack.

Jane: And yeah, I think just
go into that mudflat

And then they can go,
shwoo, head on out.

Man: Oh, you can go back a bit.

Jessica: Oh, man,
it's such a proud moment

To think that whenever
they were first brought in

In just such a poor condition,

Didn't know if they
were gonna make it,

And then to see them now to this
point, all fit and ready to go.

They're gonna do great.

Kc: This is fritz
and this is uggy.

Jessica: Ugg, you're
doing great, little girl.

Jane: We can bring it closer
to like two inches.

Okay, ready?

One, two, three,

Go for it!

Jessica: Uggy, much to my
surprise, she went straight on.

As soon as we opened that door,
there was no stopping her.

Jane: Go uggy!

Okay, fritz!

He's gonna, he'll figure it out.

Jessica: Oh, my gosh.
Jane: There he goes.

Jane: The male, he hung out in
the kennel a little bit longer.

He was a little unsure
of the situation.

Being a rehabber,
this is what it's all about,

Is to be able to take
a sick, stranded animal,

Get him healthy again and
release him back into the wild.

It's really satisfying.

Jessica:
So it was just kind of neat

To see their
little heads pop up.

Like you can still
see them right now

And they're still
trying to figure out

Where they're going,
what they're doing.

It's a whole big world
for them now.

Kara: Hi, buddy.

Jennifer: We always look forward
to release days,

But today is extra special

Because we're going to be
releasing friar tuck.

After four years,
he finally gets to go free.

We're very, very excited
to send friar tuck home

To his rightful place.

And we wish him all the success
in the world

With lots of eaglets,
and hopefully he nests nearby.

He'll always be distinct.

He never quite grew
all the feathers back,

So we'll all be on the lookout
for him.

All: One, two, three!

Jennifer: Ooh!

We were a little nervous when
he bounced off the platform

And landed on the ground and
was just kind of looking around.

Jen: I was a little worried
that he wasn't gonna take off.

Jennifer: Thankfully, after
he checked everybody out,

He launched up.

Jen: And then when he took off,
he just kept flying.

Jennifer: He's doing
a victory lap, guys!

He's got so much space to soar.

Jen: Oh! Look at him go!

Woman: He's like, "wait,
those are the food ladies."

Jen: He just keeps going around!

Jennifer: It was like a special
way of saying goodbye to us.

One lap for every year
he was here.

It just won't be the same
without friar tuck.
