There was these fellas at this club
and they asked us to go out with them.

We were supposed to go to Southend.

This old taxi, it was bright green and it had
on the bonnet 'homeward bound'.

- We stopped at the station.

It's got written on the bonnet
'homeward bound'.

- It's one of them 1937 models, isn't it?
(Laughter)

So we gets out
and they started messing about a bit.

We walked in and saw this body.
It was only a fella lying down.

- Oh, no!
- And my stockings got caught on the grass!

(Makes kissing noise)

- Right centre.

Right, Tom, here they come.

A summer evening at the club.

This is how things usually warm up,

with a chat and a giggle for the girls,

and a bit of cricket in the nets for the boys.

It's something to do, in company.

Peggy's a regular.

She comes in most nights with her own friends.

Harry and his group drift in occasionally
and hang around for a while.

They like to watch things.

Tony comes in the middle of the week,
when his pocket's getting empty.

He's a good cricketer and enjoys the game.

More than he'll admit.

And Adey, he'll go anywhere for an audience.

Besides, he's tried other clubs.

The one I went up with Howie...

. .half a crown a tern.

That was all right.
Paid my half a crown and went in there.

I goes along the corridor with my mate
and I starts singing.

So, that's all right. All of a sudden,
an old dear, about 80, comes belting up.

'What are you doing?' 'Singing, dear.'

'No, you can't sing in here.
You're making a noise.'

'Making a noise?'

She says, 'I'm gonna put you on
six weeks' probation.' Probation!

She said, 'If you don't make a noise
in six weeks we'll let you stay in the club.'

Sod that for a lark!
'Right, I'll have my money back.'

She says,
'Right, right, I'm glad to get rid of you.'

So got my money back, went down Tony's,
had a nosh-up, ended up at this dump.

Oi! He's hopeless!

- Who is? He's not!
- He's hopeless, though, isn't he?

Tommy Steele!

There you are. Look at Tommy Steele.

Shut up, you.
I'd get a bit of stick on you.

He's as stupid as Vince.

Oi, Peggy! He's hopeless, isn't he, love?

So the evening gets underway

for one small group of the rowdy generation
that's forever in the headlines.

The boys from the LCC flats
off. Kennington Lane haven't far to come.

They're always in early.

Kenny and Brian, Woody, Bobby and John
come over in a bunch

and spend the evening
in each other's company.

They go together, wherever they go.

The corridors fill up and though one working day
may be much like another,

there's always plenty to talk about
by the time evening comes around.

Bill Belsham's on hand
to keep an eye on things.

And Jean looks after the girls.

Before the evening's serious business
gets under way,

a lot of meeting and talking and pushing
gets done up and down the club.

(Chattering)

Right, yes, now, wait a minute.
Now, hold it just a second, lads. Just a second.

This is the library...

...but they don't do much reading here.

Instead, most nights there's talk,
more or less organised.

Ron drops in a couple of nights a week,

throws out some remark and they're off.

It's just like women. You see on
the television all the French fashions,

and showing all their frocks off and all that.

Naturally, men want to get into fashion too.

They don't wanna
just have the women in fashion.

If a new style comes out, a boy immediately -
if he thinks it's a good suit -

wants to go and get one, doesn't he?

If someone else likes it, they'll go and get one.

Out of a bloke's money, how much
do you think of in terns of buying clothes?

I spend nearly 30 bob a week on clothes
out of my wages.

- You mean you save up 30 bob a week?
- Yeah.

I put 30 bob by. When I've got enough, I buy...

- What do you consider a good price for a suit?
- About 15 guineas.

- For that you expect something good.
- I want a good suit for 15 guineas.

- How long would that last?
- Well, about eight months to a year.

Well, after eight months to a year, it doesn't look smart
any more so you've got to buy a new one.

- I disagree.

If you buy a suit, you buy a good 'un,
it'll last you.

But if you buy a cheap suit,
you don't expect it to last.

You two said if you buy a good suit,
it should last you. That's a good suit?

It must be a good suit for 15 guineas, mustn't it?

- I don't reckon you'd get a good suit.
- You don't know what you're talking about!

(Laughter)

There's a long tradition of this sort of talking
at Alford House.

Some come to listen, some play it for laughs.

Some speak up
because they mean what they say.

About parents, for instance.

Everybody's got views about them.

My mother didn't know I could smoke
but I had enough money when I was 14.

- And though your parents forbade you...
- I've given up smoking now.

. .You smoked anyway.
You'd hide round the comer, is that right?

But how do you combat that sort of thing?
How do you ...?

What could your parents have done
to stop you smoking around the comer?

- Not given me so much money to spend.
- I see.

I had ten shillings a week when I was 14.

Now, say, as Adey says,
not to give the kid so much money.

That'll only encourage the kid to nick.
I've done it myself.

- So have I, in Woolworths.

I've been at school a few times, gone out,
spent my dinner money on chips.

I wanted a fag so I went in a shop
and pinched them.

If you don't give your kid no money
there might be a gang of kids in the square.

They've all got pocket money,
might want to go to the pictures,

but your kid that ain't got no money can't go.

So what will he go?
He'd go along with his mates.

- He'll start thieving.
- How do you know you won't have a girl?

You're talking about a boy.

A girl don't go out and pinch like a boy.

- (Giggles)

Now we're all back together again,
I'm going to ask you

whether you feel that a girl ought to be
treated differently to a bloke regards money.

How do you feel about that business
of the girl being paid for all the time?

If I had my way, Ron,
I say to my girl, I tell her now,

But if I wanna go to the pictures, I pay.' Like that.

Like this Sunday she wanted to go dancing.

Not me. She didn't have no money
so we didn't go.

And with everybody busy on the floor,
this is a good time to get away alone

for a long phone call.

I went down the dogs when I was seven
and I had two bob - a week's pocket money.

I said, 'I'll have it on that dog.' It lost.

It broke my heart. It ain't worth it.

Some of the older boys have the time and money
for a good meal and a conversation.

Adey, as usual, has an audience.

Johnny Kaye prefers to listen.

This is really the start of his working day.

He'll be going over the river presently
to do a night's work at Covent Garden.

These blokes and their bootlace ties.

If they're all like that it won't matter.

Tony makes a proper meal of it.

He went straight to the club after changing
from work and this is his first real sit-down.

After it, he's still got friends to meet outside.

Perhaps a trip to the West End to look around.

But the younger boys from the fiats
are nearly due home now.

They've got some eating to do
before they turn in.

Do you sell Pepsis?

BOY: And a tea, please. And bread and butter.

Being young in the morning
is different from being young at night.

For one thing, there's no crowd about.

(Train horn blares)

Of the boys from the flats,
only Brian and Johnny are still at school.

The others are in jobs now.

Bobby's been in the post office for over a year.

Woody's a butcher, Kenny's in the print.

The two youngest
aren't sure what they'll do yet.

Meanwhile, there's school to get through.

Brian's day is made to start
with a hymn and a prayer.

For the others, there's work.

Work isn't hard to come by just now.

There are enough jobs going,
especially for the girls.

Frances has had three or four in a year.

There wasn't much to choose between them
except that an office is cleaner than a factory.

Janet sews in the basement
of a Mayfair dressmaker's.

She's learning a trade and likes it.

But there's less money
than in many unskilled jobs.

She's sometimes tempted to turn it in.

Being a butcher, like everything else,
needs learning.

Woody's getting good at it.

With luck, he thinks he may be
in the meat trade for life.

Bob is a junior postman.

Life can be dull for an internal messenger
with odd jobs to do between errands.

But Bob is keen on cars.

He'll be driving a post office van soon
and his days will liven up.

Beryl sits at a bench, making food in a factory.

She has done for three years.

Probably will do until she gets married.

Work is something that has to be done...

...by everyone.

And it's good to have it.

Just the same,
the day doesn't go by any too fast.

In the working hours, thoughts about
the evening have time to pile up.

Pleasant thoughts, maybe. Or frightening.

- Hear what they were saying last night, Bob?
- What?

- Old Georgie Radcliffe.
- No?

- They're gonna get a team to go and do him.
- Who is?

Smithy's mob don't want to do it.
He said about getting a team from Alford House to do him.

There's more than 50 boys there.

He's after Ginger now. He's after someone else.

Some bloke's supposed to have
walked her home and raped her.

That's the fella that's gonna get the mob up
and go after him.

He's gonna get some mob from Camberwell Green
and bring 'em up, is he?

It's gonna be a big mob, I tell you that,
cos Smithy's got a mob.

Tooting Bec was gonna come down
and have a go at Smithy one of these days.

You know how many boys there was
of Smithy's? 100.

Of course, when I went round with Tim,
there was about 12 of us going with the birds.

We saw all these lot. There was a crowd of them
right at the end of the new flats.

There was 50 there and there was...
You know Thomas's club? Another 50 there.

You know what Smithy looks like.
He doesn't look hard, does he?

He looks a queer.
He's found some fella up the high street.

And he was with his mate
and took the piss out of his mate.

His mate turned round to batter him.

After a meal and a change of clothes
into a dark suit, the day's work is left behind.

The weekend begins
with paying subs at the club.

All the same,
Friday is the most popular night of the week.

Everybody comes.

(Chatter)

A good evening starts with talk
and ends with dancing.

But a club with life in it is for other things too.

For games and meeting friends
and learning something.

There can be a lot on
before the records are turned up at nine.

(Whistle)

(Shouting)

(Chatter)

I missed school a load of times.

Got a hot-water bottle in it.

There was a lot of animals escaped last tern, wasn't there?

They don't normally let them out.

- I wish someone would gag her.
- (Laughter)

For a start...the worst thing
that can hurt a person is staying in...

Now, it hurts me a lot if I have to stay in

if they abolished the...

. .if they abolish it,
the people that's gonna murder people, see,

they're gonna get life sentence or 25 years.

That's gonna hurt them more
than being done away with just like that,

- because it's over in a couple of seconds.

Say someone come into your house tonight,

or when you get home you found
your brother and sister-in-law dead. Strangled.

You're only worrying about the prisoner.

What about the relatives?
The murdered ones' relatives.

They've let some of these murderers out.

Well, it's not fair. They've killed someone.
Why don't they get killed?

Say they've murdered someone,
they should get hung, that's what I think.

When a good subject like murder comes up,
everybody pitches in.

The words pour out wild and they are felt.

you think what you feel
and you say what you feel.

But when the feelings get angry or confused,
it's not surprising the words come out ugly.

It's good to have strong feelings.

But for living in the world,
a bit of knowledge is needed too.

And a bit of curiosity to look further than
the headlines of the morning paper.

Who's helping Bobby to find that?

And Beryl?

And Percy?

And all the others?

Not that they're worried.

They're good at making the most of every day.

And just talking about things like this
is a beginning.

Old boys from the school
have long been connected with the club.

So, for one summer afternoon each year,
Lambeth comes to Mill Hill,

for cricket and tea and a swim in the open air.

The club's first XI find white flannels
for the occasion,

and the game is played out
in front of the clean, white pavilion.

(Applause)

With everybody's eyes on the pitch,
the game is played hard.

The cricket's the thing.

But down at the far end of the field,
away from the grown-ups,

dress is optional and the second Xis
are allowed to fight it out on their own.

There's no less feeling in this match,
but the tactics are different.

You're good boys!

Don't stand there and watch.
Go after the bowier!

Oh, well done, Bobby!

Well done, darlin'! Keep runnin'!

- Another one!
- Ten Player's for you when you come out.

Score 50, Bob, I'll give you away!

(Wolf whistle)

when the club gets away from home.

When the boys pass through the West End,

the West End remembers, for a while,
that they have passed through.

And that's how the boys want it.

(Screams)

(Laughter)

When the club make for Tony's fish bar
after a Saturday dance,

you can hear the shouting
all the way down the road.

There's more of it, probably,
than there used to be,

when the people who complain about
the young were young themselves.

But, then, there's more traffic
in the streets now too.

And more lights.

And more people in the district
since the fiats were built all around.

Just the same, a good evening for young people
is much as it has always been.

It's for being together with friends and dancing.

And shouting when you feel like it.

Things we'd all like to do.

(Overlapping voices)

John, are you going to that wedding?

- See you tomorrow.
- Yeah, all right. See you, John.

Be round about half-past five, Ken.

Yeah, half-past.

- Yeah.

There's a load of girls down there.
