I wanted to be a character in a novel.

No one goes to jail for a little
marijuana.

My green gene picked him. Wow.

You got the money, huh?

We're the judicial federal police.

This better not be a rip -off, man.

I'm shot.

It's bad.

It's all I can think of. This is bad.

One little phrase twists your whole life
around in a different direction.

How was the fresh out of high school?

Was a well -read young guy. I mean,
loved the books, loved Hemingway.

I'm a very non -scheduled person, and I
have been since way back when.

I've pretty much done anything I can to
get away from monotony.

One o 'clock, sure you don't want to
lunch?

No, I'm all right.

Thanks, Dad.

I wanted to be a character in a novel
that just began life the next day and

never looked back.

Just never looked back.

Inside, that's what I wanted, some
danger, some romance, some spontaneity,

know, just to blow up in my face.

And, of course, I was young, and I
didn't realize that when it blows up,

sometimes some negative shrapnel will
tear you apart.

It was exciting, scary, doing something.

new for the first time in your life.

I just wanted to see what was described
in some of the books I read, some

untouched speeches, some pristine
environments without a Coke can or a

bottle laying on it.

I

got

up in the morning and I remember hearing
The burrows in

the distance.

It was just incredible.

It was like waking up inside a novel.

You just went outside your hotel room,
and you looked around, and everything

beautiful.

No, it's just rich.

You know, it's a different world. And I
like that different world.

subtropics, fruit on the trees, green
lush jungles, pristine clear water,

white beakers.

It was a garden of Eden.

During this time, I'd seen this Mexican
guy.

He'd made the international sign.

I just immediately thought, no thanks,
man. Thank you, but no thanks.

Well, the day after that, I saw him on
the seawall, and he's playing chess with

none other than Bill, the other
American.

And I'm introduced to Jorge.

Yeah,

Bill had to leave, and so I played chess
with Jorge.

He mentioned afterwards, Well, you
haven't heard anything.

And immediately I'm going, Hmm, I
thought, you know, the narc.

Because I'd heard the story.

about using some marijuana with one of
the Mexicans and then having them turn

right around and go to the cops. Thank
you, but... But after seeing him

repeatedly down at the beach, I noticed
he was with an Anglo lady and an Anglo

kid, and I thought, well, I wonder
what's up with that, you know, curious.

He brought me over and introduced me.
This is my wife, Maria, and she's from

Paris, and this is our daughter, and I
thought, well, neat.

Maybe the guy's not a narc or not an
informant.

After we got to know

each other, we have a little smoke.

I think he was feeling me out, but when
he thought I was comfortable with the

idea, he said, What did the other day
you were really nervous about the

marijuana thing?

And I said, yeah, I said, you know,
Americans care about getting arrested

here for marijuana.

You know, being locked up in jail for
the rest of their lives. He goes, I

understand. And he goes, you know, I
sell little bits and pieces, you know,

whomever might want some.

I get that a lot from Europeans and
Americans when they come here.

You see these Americans coming into
town, he goes.

When they're hesitant about buying from
a Mexican, they'll buy from an American.

I said, no way I want to get caught with
it. No way.

They said, I'd rather be poor and sleep
on the beach than go to jail, you know,

with money in my pocket.

And he was like, listen, you have to
understand how it works down here. The

local police, they'll tell you you're
under arrest, but really what they want

some of your money. You sure?

Of course I'm sure. No one goes to jail
for a little marijuana.

You know, in the back of my mind, I'm
thinking, okay, well.

forget that old wives tale i'm you know
i'm not going to go to jail for the rest

of my life if i get caught with three
joints or something and he's like it's

to you but if you want to make a little
bit extra money

that phrase right there you want to make
a little bit extra money

i was thinking yeah you know i was on a
budget so yeah

actually i i do jorge want to make a
little bit extra money

More often than not, your clients would
be European.

You would literally develop an eye for
saying, okay, that guy is a definite get

-high person, and maybe those two over
there might want to experiment.

I guess it was called profiling.

Naturally, you're not going to sell to
Mr. and Mrs. Smith with their gray hair

and their flower tourist shirts.

Fancy a smoke?

I mean, that wasn't a viable client.

So, you know, you pick the younger
people. Fancy a smoke?

Younger, maybe some longer hair.

How much are you guys looking for?

I always had a question of, is this
right, is this wrong, is this good, is

bad?

Legal and illegal didn't enter into it
necessarily.

I was happy going to the beach, selling
little inoffensive bits and pieces of

marijuana for Jorge.

Enter one Steve from Houston, Texas.

Typical American, had the tourist shirt
on that you could spot a mile away.

And I even wondered up to him, potential
client. You're American?

Texas. Man, me too.

Small talk, usual thing.

I said, hey, you want to go down to the
beach later and get high?

And he kind of, his eyes got big and he
was like... Not in Mexico.

And I was like...

Oh, man, I said, Mexico is fine.

I had a little baggie with me, and I
pulled it out, and he's like, his eyes

look at it, and he goes, he was
impressed.

I could tell.

And we smoked some. He was even more
impressed.

And I said, you know, want to get a
little bit? You know, just tell me, and

grab some from my buddy, and I'll hook
you up.

And he's like.

Is he a Mexican? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I don't want to deal with any Mexicans.

And I said, well, that's cool. You never
have to meet the guy.

Yeah?

A couple of days later, I saw him again.

Hey, man.

It was probably hot.

He goes, man.

I got to tell you, that weed you got me,
that was something special.

Oh, yeah?

Any chance I can get some more?

I was like, well, yeah. I said, sure.
How much do you want? Like two kilos or

more.

It was my turn to be surprised. I'd
never sold anything like that. Two

My greed gene kicked in. There was no
paranoia there. I'm going, cha -ching.

Two kilos?

You know, thinking about, you know, the
money.

He goes, yeah, but not now. I want to
come back down.

And I was like, oh, yeah, okay, you
know, because I've heard people say

we're going to come back and buy some
more.

And I said, okay, I'm pretty sure I can
sort something out.

The famous people. He goes, just like
the stuff he gave us? And I was like,

yeah.

Or better.

Really? I'm like, you know, trying to
think the hook. And he's like, can you

more than two kilos?

I'm going, wow, man, this guy is
serious.

And I said, yeah. I'll talk to my guy.
I'm pretty sure I can sort something

You know, what can I say?

Things unfolded rather quickly.

And as it turns out, violently.

I forgot about Steve.

I thought about him for a couple of days
and, you know, you cross your fingers.

I thought, hmm, just, you know, another,
you know, talker.

And he showed up.

It must have been like, I don't know,
eight, ten days later. There he is.

Hey, man.

I'm back.

Man, hello.

smiling his big smile coming down the
boardwalk towards me. How's it going?

Excellent, excellent.

I was amazed. I mean, when I saw him, I
was like, yeah!

God, oh my God.

My quantity buyer. Here he is.

Yeah, yeah, we should go. Ooh, let's go.

I'll take care of all that.

We go and talk, and we're both, really,
I mean, we're both smiling, you know,

big time, because he's there to make
money, and I'm there to get money. So if

this works out good, this will be a
regular gig, man. Yeah, I hope so.

And I'm thinking, this is great, man.
All I have to do is go to Jorge, trundle

across town with it, give it to this
guy, help him pack it, and send him on

way. And I'm having a five -star
breakfast at the El Camino Real.

Not bad, huh?

Go back to his hotel, and I said, no.
What are we talking about?

Two, three, five kilos?

Depends on the price.

But I want to get as much as I can.

And he pulls out this big wad of 20s, I
mean, with a rubber band around it. And

I was like, wow, you got the money, huh?

Cool. And I say, well, I'm going to go
get you a sample. And I'm going out the

door, and he says something like, hey,
man, I'm not going to get ripped off.

And that was odd. I had my hand on the
door, and I turned around.

He's holding this little.

Mini automatic.

Guns in Mexico. I knew that was taboo.

Depends on the price.

But I want to get as much as I can.

I'm going to go and get you a sample,
okay?

Hey man, I'm not going to get ripped
off.

Whoa.

The first thing I'm thinking is, ah,
crap, a gun, man.

Guns in Mexico, I knew that was taboo.

They've got strict gun laws down there.

Nobody but the cops have a gun, period.

And I'm like, man, put that away.

You know, internally, I'm already
freaking.

This guy's my friend.

I'm going, hey, Steve.

You're not going to get ripped off.

Nobody's going to burn you for your
money, all right?

Yeah.

Mellow out with the gun thing, okay,
man? All right.

Okay.

I'll be right back.

I'd been around guns.

I knew this wasn't the place at the time
for them.

But if he wanted to have a gun, that's
fine. I knew he wasn't going to need to

use it.

Jorge!

So I leave. I go to Jorge's.

I said,

the guy showed up, the guy I told you
about.

And Jorge's excited. He's like, cool,
cool. Yeah, let's do something.

He said, we need something really good,
you know, to show this guy. Because he's

got like, you know, like $2 ,000 or
something, which was a lot to us.

And I got a beautiful sample from him.

Maybe a half ounce or something, you
know, to give to Steve.

Oh, that is so sweet, man.

We were at his hotel room, and he's
looking at it, and he's going, wow.

Better than the last.

What'd I tell you, huh?

So I said, you know, let's celebrate,
man. Let's roll a couple of these

and then head down to the beach.

Really nice, man. Really nice.

No tourists are hanging out on the beach
when it's dark. I'll be down every

month for that.

We're smoking.

Everything's good. We're talking.

He's got his big plans.

We had just finished, and I remember
walking towards the

water a few steps and flicking the roach
into the water.

All of a sudden, this very authoritative
voice goes, You know, what are you

doing here?

Who's that?

I don't know.

That voice, I knew it was trouble, man.

We're just here, you know, we're just
hanging out. And the guy goes, What are

your names?

Where are your papers?

And Steve's going, What's going on, man?
Who are those guys? Just chill out,

okay? Just chill out.

And they walk up to us and they said,
Sí, sí, sí, tengo, tengo. I have him.

¿Quién tú?

Somos policía federal.

We're the judicial federal police.

It's a bad boy.

So Steve goes, this better not be a rip
-off, man.

And right when he said that, all of a
sudden I'm flashing back to his hotel

room earlier when he says, I'm not going
to get ripped off.

And I just know it. I know it without
asking. I know the idiot's got the gun

him.

And I'm thinking to myself, well, I
can't just blatantly ask Steve if he's

gun in his pocket.

And I said, uh... Tell me you still
don't have that firepower in your

Well, yeah, I do, man.

And I'm thinking to myself, this is it,
man. We're going to jail.

And I'm going, okay, listen.

When I show them my papers and they're
looking at me, do something with it.

And I pull out my passport.

They both...

Look down at my paperless.

Instantaneously, I see four flashes of
light.

I mean, they drop fast.

There was no slow -motion Hollywood
crumple onto the ground.

They hit the ground like rocks.

I'm in shock.

Stupid thing to say.

Do something with it.

I should have said toss it. Get rid of
it.

God, man, just one little phrase.

Twist your whole life around in a
different direction.

Steve's already gone.

He shot, wheeled, and ran before I could
come out of my stupor.

All this happened within the span of
like two or three seconds. I don't know.

Time shifted.

In those situations, You go into shock,
and time just blurs.

You know, and I'm thinking, it's bad.

That's all I can think of. This is bad.

I heard voices approaching, and then I
thought, I've got two dead cops on each

side of me.

Let's see.

Oh, yeah, I better get the hell out of
here.

I was running scared.

Perfect phrase to describe it, running
scare.

As I'm running, I hear this bang, bang,
bang, bang, and I'm thinking, what the

hell is that?

And I'm hearing this literally whining
past my ear.

And before I can consider the fact that
bullets are passing really close to my

head because I'm hearing them, I'm gone.

It hits my calf from behind, knocks my
leg up into the air.

That's when all the thoughts coalesced.
Everything crashed into my mind.

All at one time, I thought, there's at
least one cop alive.

He's shooting at me, and now I'm
shocked.

The adrenaline just went.

If I wasn't running fast before, I'd be
running fast now.

I would be more like the flat.

I'm bleeding bad now because I can feel
the blood collecting in my tennis shoes.

And I'm like, okay, yeah, this is bad,
okay?

I come up and I see this complex of
people.

I mean, I was through that crowd and
gone before they could look right or

And ran through a couple more streets,
zigzagged up an alley, and there was a

dirt embankment.

And I ran up that embankment, got onto
the highway.

The adrenaline's just maybe starting to
wear off right when I get to the cutoff

that goes down from the highway to
Jorge's place.

So I run down there, and I'm banging on
his door.

I'm completely disoriented.

Jorge opens up the door. Hey, Maria!

I literally went down on my face right
there in his doorstep. Maria!

Maria!

What's wrong, Jake?

The next thing I remember is I was on
their couch in the room.

Jorge is sitting next to me, and he's
got this hypodermic.

I said, what's that?

He goes, just in case that cop's bullet
was dirty, eh?

He's wrapping up my leg, and I look past
him, and I see Maria packing a couple

of bags.

And I thought...

Uh -oh, doesn't look good.

And, you know, the old rats deserting
the sinking ship thing crossed my mind

a minute.

Jorge sees me looking at them, and he
goes, Listen, we're going to hang out in

Manzanillo for a couple of days.

I left you enough fruit, food, water for
three, four, maybe five days.

Then I'll come back here, check on you,
change your bandages, maybe bring back

some more penny filling.

All right?

He's like, take it easy.

Keep your leg up.

Door locked.

Windows closed.

Don't turn on any light.

Stay quiet.

All right?

See you, man.

I heard their Volkswagen thing drive
off.

You know, it puttered up their little
driveway onto the highway and was gone.

I was in a pit of depression.

I didn't want to go to jail.

I didn't want to die.

So I didn't turn on lights, and I didn't
make any noise, and I didn't click on

the television.

I was just in obscure darkness in the
day and dark darkness at night.

Jorge did tell me to drink a lot of
water, so I tried to do that.

It made sense to me. You know, I lost
blood, drink water.

The bullet wound ached. It would throb.

Every time I moved, I felt it pull. I
felt my muscle pull, and I'd see that it

would be bleeding again.

You know, you could see the fresh blood
coming through the gauze.

On the third day, I can't take it
anymore.

I decided to change the bandages.

Soften the gauze, and I'm trying to work
it loose a little bit, but...

Ultimately, I just rip it off.

I mean, there was no good call on that
one because, you know, it just started

bleeding. The scab comes off and a
little bit of yellow pus there.

Yeah,

it hurts like hell.

I was concerned from the onset, but I
grew more concerned that day that

I smelled the wound.

It's an unsavory smell.

They were big motivators.

in this next idiotic plan that I came up
with.

I woke up one afternoon.

There's one of Maria's dresses.

It's a, you know, long dress, half
-sleeve, orange model.

They're looking for two Americans, two
male Americans.

I can be an ambiguous female.

Get onto a bus, go straight up to the
border, save my leg.

All I have to do is make this plan of
dressing up like a girl work.

So I spent the rest of that afternoon
getting dolled up.

I did the whole thing, man. The bra, the
dress.

I'm thinking, yeah,

yeah, it's going to work.

It's going to work.

I was probably running a fever.

If I wasn't running a fever, I was just
stupid or crazy.

And it got better. I saw a pair of her
big sunglasses.

The big ones, the movie star sunglasses.

She's got a hat hanging up over here, a
big sun hat, you know, one of the straw

jobs.

I found a pair of her inch -high heels
or whatever.

I'm thinking, nice.

This is all coming together, you know.

I've got to admit, I wasn't the best
-looking woman I've ever seen before.

But I told myself, it'll pass.

I've seen uglier women.

I just wanted to get out.

That's where I was thinking was, get out
of trouble, save my leg.

I hadn't been in the sunlight in I don't
know how long.

Man, it hit me full on.

You know, I waited for the gap to the
bright sunlight, and I committed myself

this plan.

Terrible job of walking in the women's
shoes. Plus, I'm limping because of the

bullet wound.

And I just tell myself, okay, climbing
up the path here, so this is bad, but

when you get to the highway, that's when
you've got to focus and walk normally.

Start walking down the highway.

You know, limping, I'm thinking to
myself, I'm going to make this happen.

I'm getting out of this town, and I'm
going to save my life.

The adrenaline's kicking in again.

I notice the first group of people, and
I'm looking over out the edge of my

sunglasses, and every one of these
people are turning and looking at me

this.

That wasn't a good thing.

There was room for doubt now in my plan.

Right about that time, I hear this
noise.

I looked up, and I saw that soul car
coming.

I'm trying to keep the fear of faith in
my mind.

They passed me, and I heard the
deceleration.

The next sound was even worse.

It accelerated.

The car was spinning the tires.

I heard him coming.

These guys were excited.

I was scared.

I figured I was dead.

I woke up in the back of that cruiser,
and believe me, I was stuffed. I had

pressed right up against me, you know,
and my head's back, and I'm feeling

pretty bad.

Looking up out of the window, and I just
remember seeing the sky, and I was

thinking, the sky, how beautiful it is,
even from down here in

hell.

And they're screaming and yelling as we
pull up to the police station.

I've never been so scared in my life,
never.

You hear the cacophony of Spanish voices
and excitement in the air, you know.

There's a lot of adrenaline flowing.
They just caught the cop killer.

And I see him step out of his office,
the chief of police.

This guy was Hollywood -tapped
perfection, Mexican cop.

He just looked at me and, man, the hate.

His eyes were like animals.

I look back and I understand it.

You shot two of my cops. You're dead,
man.

He asked me a bunch of questions.

He didn't understand English. I didn't
understand Spanish.

And he was pissed off.

I didn't do it.

He popped the top of the holster off,
pulled out a gun, grabbed my shoulder,

just smacked me right in the face with a
butt -ahead semi -auto.

Man, I mean, I was out of it.

He knocked me into another world.

I remember coming towards this very
thick iron door.

The guy threw it open and both of them
just seeped me into the air.

I wasn't in a hurry to get up. I don't
even think I could have gotten up at

point.

I remember looking sideways at everybody
staring at me.

The whole prison.

As far as I knew, I was the only
American in jail, and I was wearing a

Yeah, that's probably not a good
combination in a Mexican jail.

It was starting to get dark.

They bedded down early inside the jail.
There wasn't a lot of lights.

I didn't have high hopes.

I'm caught.

Kind of like a fly in a web.

So, I'm already writing myself off.

You know, this is bad.

I didn't see anything good coming. This
is all blackness to me.

No light at the end of the tongue.

The next morning, they were already up.

Everything's buckling.

The big concern at that point was
getting medical attention.

My leg was looking pretty bad.

I mean, it had gone past that point
where maybe a pill was going to fix

It was about that time that they called
my name from the door.

They yelled it out, and some of the
other prisoners took up the cry.

Because, you know, when the guards want
you, they want you.

I'm not feeling good about this.

They pick me up on each side, pull me
down the hallway and into another room.

I'm getting that.

Anticipatory fear.

Yesterday, everything just hit me.

It's like a bomb, and it's ticking
inside of you.

And you just don't want it to go off,
because you'll be lost.

You'll be destroyed by the fear.

I'm sitting in that chair, and I see a
flare of light over in the corner of the

room.

And it's a Mexican officer.

I didn't even know he was there. He was
in the corner in the dark until he lit

up his cigarette.

Door flies open.

Bleachy smacks me in the side of the
face, knocks me senseless.

And the next thing I remember is
bringing my head up and seeing him

me with his hand spread on the table.

And he starts firing these questions at
me.

Enter the guy from the corner.

And he goes, I said, no, no.

The police chief fires another question.

I said, I don't know.

Thinking. You just deny.

You deny, you deny, you deny.

That's what everybody said.

This guy leans forward into the light,
looks at me right in my eye, and he

You better answer the question. Answer
questions.

Answer the questions.

It's good for you.

And I'm thinking, he's right.

It's going to be better for me if I
answer the question.

Who shoots the police?

His name is Dean.

I told him the guy's full name. I told
him where he lived.

Every question he asked me, I answered.

Except the drug. That was the first time
that I made up a lie.

Because, as far as I was concerned,
Jorge was a nice guy.

The lieutenant colonel guy.

Cool as a cucumber character.

Did these your clothes?

I thought we were

done. But El Jefe comes in with his
paper and pen.

He throws it on the table.

And the lieutenant colonel, in his bad
English, told me... This is the

confession.

This is what you've been telling us.

If I sign it, they'll take me to the
hospital.

I gotta tell you, my leg was looking
pretty damn bad.

Feeling pretty damn bad, too.

But God knows what was printed there
because it was in Spanish.

I can't sign that.

No, wait a minute. No.

¿Cómo?

I wasn't gonna sign.

I was not gonna spend the rest of my
life in that prison.

Reality was warped.

Time was twisted.

There was no time inside that room.

There was just the pain and the
questions.

There was just the interrogation, the
light.

That's all there was.

Every chance I got, I would tell them,
my leg, my leg, it's bad.

I learned how to say leg, pierna.

So I'd say, my pierna, it's malo, it's
malo.

They had told me.

Sign, hospital.

Firma y hospital.

They wanted me to confess something I
didn't do.

But I really thought that if I did, I
was gone.

Man, I was gone. The door was closed.

And I was in prison for the rest of my
life.

Man, that last time in the green room, I
just felt dead inside.

It was like they just pulled everything
out of me, and I was just empty,

hopeless.

Thinking to myself, God, I made it. I
made it through. They're going to save

leg, and maybe they caught a seed on me,
and he confessed, and now we're all

good.

I couldn't believe it.

There's two pissed off, angry looking
guys with bandages around their chest

stomach.

I knew right away it was a two -shot
cough.

I was like, God, I thought they were
dead.

Two to the torso at close range.

I didn't shoot them, but I sure as hell
didn't help them.

You leave somebody bleeding on the
ground, you might as well be an

I look over and see El Jefe standing
over in one corner.

And the one cop looks at me, and he
just...

This big wad right at me, and I thought,
I don't blame you, buddy.

Either one of them could have said,
yeah, yeah, he saw

us.

But each of them, real reluctantly,
goes...

That's when I realized that I just
passed through the eye of the needle.

That no meant I wasn't the one that shot
them.

I felt great when I walked out of that
hospital room.

It was like a thousand pounds right up
off me.

Oh, God.

God, I have to almost say that might
have been the best I've ever felt in my

life.

The very next day, they took me up to an
IV, gave me a couple of injections, put

me on rounds of pills.

A day or two later, guards came, took me
back to the jail and my leg was looking

better.

You know, things get rough around there
sometimes.

And at that point, I'd been through so
much that I was just going to ride it

out.

But they didn't want me anymore.

They wanted money. And they said, You're
going to talk to your parents.

And this is what you're going to say.

And they had a little paper written out
in English.

And it said I'm being held in prison.

I can be bailed out if you'll come down
with money.

But weeks later, they called me to the
bar doors.

I saw my dad standing there.

God, man.

Dad?

That was incredible.

I couldn't believe it, man.

I couldn't believe it.

I mean, seriously, I couldn't even
describe my feelings.

My dad was that kind of guy.

He'd travel across the world to help one
of his kids.

The attorney sat my father and I down,
and he goes, your son is out on bail.

That's all. He's out on bail. But if
your son happened to show up at the

tomorrow morning at 7 .30 in the morning
and board the only nonstop flight from

Puerto Vallarta to Los Angeles, I don't
think anybody would say anything.

He goes, this is all being done for
everybody's benefit. They get the money.

They don't have to suffer for you're not
showing up in court because, you know,

you fleed the country without their
knowledge.

It's all worked out. They can't call you
back. They can't make you come back.

All you have to do is get on that plane
tomorrow morning, and you're done.

God, man, walking out of that prison
without a guard on each side of me.

Wow, I've never felt more free in my
life. It was like I could float off the

face of the earth, man.

What a feeling of freedom.

After I'd healed up for a while, I did
go looking for Steve.

I didn't want to live in the same state
with a guy who knew that I turned

evidence on him.

I think he's proven he knows how to use
a gun.

I didn't want him coming back at me and
using it on me.

I tracked him down. I wanted to find out
what happened.

Hey, Steve.

Oh, my God.

Jake. He was amazed to see me and
shocked.

Wow.

We took a drive in the car because he
didn't want to talk at his house.

We were rolling over everything.

And he goes, well, he goes, I'll tell
you the truth. He goes, I guess I was

lucky.

And I was like.

You bet.

It's amazing you didn't get caught.

I still can't believe it.

He said he had dropped an hotel room key
in the sand when he pulled out the gun.

He didn't even pause.

He goes, I ran from the shooting site
back to the hotel, realized I didn't

the key, so I broke in the door, grabbed
my backpack, literally ran all the way

to the bus station, got on the first bus
leaving town.

He was just too quick.

He goes, about two weeks later, the FBI
came to arrest me. I was in the shower

at the time.

Ma 'am, is there a Steve Schwartz here?

He goes, I was in the shower, and while

my attorney's house.

under an alias, he used somebody else's

birth certificate.

They had no record connecting me with
the incident. It was just your say -so

that I was ever there.

They had no other witnesses.

They didn't have the gun.

The cops couldn't identify him because
it was a dark, dark night.

And I was like... It's not fair, man. I
was locked up in that jail for a month.

And you were the one that shot them.

You told me to.

No way.

And I said, Steve, believe me, I've
rolled that phrase over my mind a

times.

Do something with it.

I meant throw the gun away, toss it in
the sea or whatever.

Well, you should have said that, but you
said do something with it. So I did.

Communication is key, isn't it?

I mean, it starts wars across the world.

Just that one little phrase, man.

You know, I had to tell them about you
in jail.

That's okay.

And he goes, you know, I'm born again.

Found Jesus Christ in my life. I don't
mess around with guns or drugs or

anything anymore. So I forgive you.

And I hope you can forgive me too.

It was surreal.

The whole thing was surreal.

That about wraps it up.

Everything seemed to change.

I came to realize days later that it was
me. I was the one that was changed.

Looking back now, if I had it to do
over, I'd do it differently. But you

have anything to do over.

It did something to me.

And it wasn't all bad.

Maybe it sounds corny, but I cherish a
lot of things that most people take for

granted. I cherish a lot more about
life, the little things in life people

for granted.
