Kia ora, my name is Toby Buchanan and you're listening to episode 7 of
my true crime podcast Small Town Scandal.
As of last episode, suspect numero uno in the murder of
Uncle Mitch is his brother and my dad, Bruce Buchanan.
He was at Uncle Mitch's the day he died.
Hang on.
What are you doing here?
He said he went to see Uncle Mitch for help because he was there when his
accidentally fell onto some rocks while they were boozing and having a boogie
over and off. And now Dad's the prime suspect, especially considering his
fingerprints are all over the mullet.
My old school rival, Matt McKenzie, is now the town hero having nabbed the
most wanted. So now Dad is in a holding cell at the local police station under
suspicion of murder.
And I know some people will be thinking I'm naive, not thinking that my dad is
absolutely guilty.
It was also about this time that I started to question if podcasting the
thing was a good idea.
But fortunately, unfortunately, the podcast was starting to take on a life
its own.
What's this I hear about your dad getting arrested in relation to your
death? How did you hear about that?
Good journalist always has her ear to the ground.
How bloody fantastic is this? It's you, the podcaster, discovering his dad was
the murderer.
Everyone's going to talk about it. No, they don't know for certain it was him.
I didn't think you liked the episode I sent you. Oh, we can totally edit around
that.
We'll have to move back.
That ridiculous Can the Real Mrs Moth Please Stand Up podcast is hogging all
oxygen. But I think we can outdo it.
Anyway, mate, you do your thing. Make it all tear -jerking.
Get your dad crying on tape.
Who doesn't love a good family drama?
Hey, mate.
I'm proud of you.
And all that crap you got me into with the pet food article?
Consider it water under the bridge.
We can be a podcast or we can consider it water under the bridge.
How does that all sound, Tobes?
Are you there, Tobes?
Tobes? Oi, Tobes?
Yeah, good.
Great. Lock it in, Eddie.
Excuse me, Meredith.
Has my dad's court -appointed lawyer arrived?
Not yet. Oh.
Can I go and see him in the holding cell while I wait?
Also not yet.
Feel free to take a seat while you wait.
I'm David Patterson.
Left a message on your hotline.
I'm doing a podcast following the case of Mrs Moss.
You white... Oh, yeah.
I'll let Matt know you're here.
Okay, great.
I'm so sorry. I just want to say, you probably get this all the time, but I'm
such a huge fan of your podcast.
Go on.
Actually, I find it really inspirational because I'm doing my own podcast and
just hearing you go through it all, it really inspires me.
Great.
Happy to help.
Love my fans.
Actually, how does it feel now that she's been caught?
A bit of an anticlimax, if I'm honest.
Just really hoping to be the one to crack the case, you know? Like I usually
Kicking myself for not working it out earlier.
Clues are hidden in plain sight.
Anyway.
Meredith, hi.
I am here to see, um... The mystery cannon?
Yeah, yeah, yep, that's the one.
You him?
I'm his son.
Oh, hello.
Hi, Mr. Burrows. Sorry I'm late. Spilt birch and muesli all over myself this
morning. Sent me right back.
All right,
shall we?
Yeah. Cool.
Okay. Okay.
First things first.
So, obviously...
I don't want to know if you did it, but... Did you?
Did you do it?
Did you kill your brother?
Well... Actually, no, don't tell me. I do not want to know.
But he didn't, right? He didn't kill him?
Yeah. No, I didn't kill him.
Okay. Sure.
Hey, it doesn't matter what I think. I'm just your court -appointed lawyer.
All right. Well, maybe we should have a look at your statement then, eh?
Okay.
Here you are.
Okay. So you said you saw a trailer driving away, and that was after he was
killed, right?
Yeah. I couldn't see a lot because I was inside the house when it happened.
It was a horse trailer.
A horse trailer?
You didn't say it was a horse trailer, did you?
And you didn't think to call the police, bro?
I freaked out.
tend to do that. I mean, you can understand how that looks pretty, can't
Because normal people would call the police when they find a dead body.
Especially if it's their brother.
Oh, of course not. I just thought it was a dead guy in Cairns. What?
Sorry, what dead guy in Cairns? We shouldn't talk about that, Dad. No, hang
Did you kill a guy in Cairns?
No.
Oh, no, okay, no, do not tell me. I do not want to know.
No,
they don't, and they don't need to, right, Dad?
It was a misunderstanding.
Yeah, complete misunderstanding.
He missed you?
Yeah. What do you reckon?
Well, you know, I'm not going to lie.
I have got my work cut out for me with the two of you, eh?
I mean, everything, it just stacked against him.
Anyway, is there anything we can do? Like, is there anything I can do?
Well, short of a miracle, shit, I don't know. I guess if you could, like, find
someone to maybe pin it on, that's a little bit more suspicious that it
I've retried that.
If only the police weren't such dickheads and they kept the case open,
least kind of exhausted every possibility, you know?
Yeah, yeah, sucks, eh?
It's all right, you got this.
Anyway, I've really got to go.
Party Club Awards to attend to.
But don't you worry.
I am going to call you as soon as I can, eh? If I get the time.
Right? Otherwise, see you at the trial. You got this. You got this, all right?
Okay. Kia kaha. Okay. Bye. Bye. Sure.
Feeling completely demoralised, I thought I'd check in on Dad in his
surveilled holding cell.
Misery likes company, after all.
Dad. Here he is.
How do you think it went with the loyal lady?
Did she say anything after?
No, not really.
I didn't kill Mitzi.
I can promise you that, son.
Yeah, no, Dad, I don't think you did. Don't worry.
It's because you're a suspicious -looking old fart.
They'll lock you away for good just because of the way you look.
Hello, Mrs. Pettigrew.
You've got a nerve showing your face around here, Buchanan.
I'm sorry I facilitated your arrest, but you did kill 23 people.
39. But they don't need to know about the rest.
You're just lucky I'm not out and free because you would make a mighty fine
trophy.
If you don't mind me asking.
How did you get away with it for so long?
39. That's quite a remarkable number.
It is.
Well, I'd infiltrate my victims with my sweet smile, and then I'd kill them with
kindness, and then I'd actually kill them with bullets.
Kill them with kindness?
That's what I said, you moron.
I'll be back, Dad.
It's funny like that, just like the brain, because, like, I saw the moth
insignia on the spoon, and it just...
Everything fell into place.
Oh, cool.
I can see that you're really proud of yourself.
Tubbs, what are you doing back here?
I'm in the middle of an important interview. We've actually probably got
Well, hold on.
We haven't got into the rest of my career yet. I've got your number.
I'll give you a call if I've got any other questions.
Thanks so much for your time.
It's a shame, mate.
Yeah, I'll see you around.
Go on, Tubbs. Sorry. Hey, I was wondering if maybe I could talk to you
Uncle Mitch's case.
No, actually, we can't, because I don't have time, because I've got an interview
with the Evening News about catching not one, but two murderers in one fell
swoop. Wow.
Congratulations about that, by the way. I don't think I've said that.
I've been reading about you online.
Everyone's like, well, you're the man who caught Mrs Moth, and that's huge.
Well done.
What, um... What websites are those?
What websites were they?
I can't exactly remember, but there were about six, and they were just like,
they were saying you were real clever, Cloggs.
Anyway, and just on my dad, congratulations on that too, by the way.
amazing. Yeah. And I know that you think he's guilty and that he is guilty, but
just to be sure, just for my peace of mind, I was wondering if there was any
chance that maybe, just to be sure.
Well, you could put him through a lie detector test.
Mate, those things don't work.
Yeah. Well, maybe we could ask him about the horse trailer that he saw at the
mansion. I was wondering if... No, he's obviously lying about that.
With forensics, were there fingerprints on the lawn mowers? No.
What's going on here?
I don't know how much clearer I can be. The case is see to the... ...losed.
Closed, mate.
The case is closed. The case is closed.
You enjoy this, don't you?
Enjoy what?
That it's my dad that's been arrested.
No, no, no. God, no.
No.
But... Maybe you've got a problem with being outsmarted.
So you always thought I was a bit of a dum -dum, didn't you?
And here I am. I'm solving the crimes.
I'm catching the crims.
And I'm getting the goo.
Anyway, I've got to get ready for this news interview that's coming up, so
thanks for popping in, Tubbs.
Thank you, Matt.
I don't know why I had to deal with the brunt of Matt McKenzie's hang -ups
around having a genius scientist for a dad and having seven hyper -aggressive
older sisters, but there you go.
All I knew was the whole thing felt bloody hopeless.
But then suddenly, out of nowhere, I suddenly remembered a hero of mine's wry
observation.
Who's it? Hidden in plain sight.
Hidden in plain sight?
What am I missing?
What's that?
On the side of the window.
It's a horse trailer.
Horse.
Trailer.
Horse trailer.
No horse trailers on that day either.
Yeah, but wait.
There, there's one.
True, but that's driving onto the road at 7 .30pm, two nights before your uncle
Mitch died.
So unless they drove onto the road and camped down for two days, then I don't
think that's the murderer.
I thought looking for a bloody needle in a haystack would be here all night.
Should I cook up some sausages?
So the trailer was driven onto a dead -end road at 7 .30pm, at night, two days
before he died. And the next time we see him on CCTV footage...
It's two days after he died, okay? So they were on the road for four days,
which... Yeah, that is weird.
Wait, so that means they live on this road?
Yes. I mean, Dad said that he saw a trailer driving off shortly after Mitch
died, right? But we don't see it on the CCTV, so that means that they... I mean,
it's the only thing that makes sense is that they live on this road.
Wait, what's your dad got to do with it? That doesn't matter.
What matters is finding this horse trailer on this dead -end road.
You do realize that this road is 10 kilometers long, right? And a lot of the
farmers own horses and probably have trailers.
Right.
We're here.
Yeah. This one, they grow broccolini, so don't worry about them.
This one, they used to farm llamas, I think it was, and they got all rustled.
Who lives on the dead end? Who lives at the very end?
Can't remember.
I think I might start there. You having some sort of sixth sense experience
right now?
Maybe. But I think I'll start at the end and make my way back.
Makes sense.
And make sure you stop by on your way past for some sausages.
I'd love that.
Me too.
I drove to the end of Tamihana Road.
Vague memories were pinging the whole time.
I knew the stretch of road well.
McKee's Pet Foods?
I remembered this place from my childhood.
And was this the horse trailer that Dad saw leaving Uncle Mitch's death scene?
It certainly looked like the one from the CCTV footage.
But at that moment, all concerns for personal safety were clouded behind
memories of childhood awkwardness.
Inside, I found my old school friend.
Dwayne and Wayne McKees.
Oh,
hi, Toby. I am so sorry
about that.
I let myself in. I did knock on the door, but I don't know if you heard me
your self -flagellating. If you guys are really busy, I should... No, I actually
do need to talk to you guys.
Yeah, we're almost done.
You're almost done? Yeah, grab a seat. Fire away.
Fire away, mate.
That's Mum.
We're lost in the wilderness without her.
Oh, I'm so sorry, guys, about that.
Because I'm suddenly remembering when I was pulling up, I used to come here and
play here as a kid sometimes, right? We used to catch frogs and eat them.
That's right.
That was fun.
But listen, guys, I won't take up much more of your time. I was just going to
ask you a couple of questions, if that's OK.
We've been expecting this.
We didn't kill him, though.
We didn't kill him. We didn't kill him. Keep a cool way now.
Okay, look.
I won't tell anyone anything, right? But if you guys didn't kill Uncle Mitch, I
need to know who did.
Because at the moment, they think it's my dad.
And he can't go back into prison.
But if it is my dad, I do need to know that.
I need to know that as well. So was it my dad that killed Uncle Mitch?
It's still out there.
What is?
The demon that killed him.
Sorry, what?
It was a demon.
Sorry, a demon killed Uncle Mitch?
What did the demon look like?
It had glowing eyes.
Right.
But it was a person, right?
It was a demon straight from hell.
Okay. Well, whether it was a demon or a person... It was a demon called Azadal.
The thing is, though, it wasn't my dad, Rob. So what we need to do is we need to
go to the police station right now and we need to tell them that my dad is
innocent. No.
They'll arrest us for the marijuana we've been growing.
I can't go back to prison. I am not built for it. Sorry, Toby.
Prison sucks.
I can't go back there.
No, Dwayne.
Dwayne, we've got to go to the police.
There's loads of wolves amongst us. Please, just wait there, Dwayne.
Be careful. I'm going to go tell them.
He might come for you next.
Well, if there was a demon or a person, it was a demon straight from hell.
And the demon...
Name is apparently Azizul, and he's often depicted with glowing eyes.
So, I reckon we get the guys in and we just question them, and the McKees boys
are absolute loons.
And I've smoked way too much ganja over the years. I'm not getting involved with
that. Look, I know you think it's stupid, but maybe we should just chat.
honestly believe they saw a demon?
Well, I believe it is a possibility.
And I believe that maybe this truth is not my dad. Maybe we should get the
Carragher in and just ask him a few questions. Yeah, and maybe you should
to your lawyer.
And they can bring it up in court.
And that'll get you dead off the murder.
Cecil.
I believe you.
But it ain't no demon you're looking for.
Where are you taking me?
No one comes in here because the office has gone paperless. The stationary room
is pointless.
Aliens regularly visit Tohoiho.
Everyone knows of that.
I'm getting the evidence that it's a hard part, my friend.
Behold a creature not of this world.
Was that a fantail?
At night?
Come off it!
Okay.
How about this one?
Right, that's the Starlink satellite. Everyone gets confused by that one. It's
not the Starlink satellite, smartass.
Okay, sure. Listen, I can't actually stay very long. I'd better go.
Hold on.
Call your check.
How about that one?
Where did that one come from?
It's a grey from the Zeta reticulata system.
No, no, no, the footage. What was this recorded on?
A Buchananiser automated lawnmower.
The Buchananisers have cameras.
Yes, ma 'am.
The Buchananizers.
The Buchananizers might have filmed who killed Uncle Mitch.
