to a guilty verdict in one trial

and an acquittal in a second trial.

But that's what happened to Sam shepherd.

In July of 1954 Dr. Shepherd,

a well-liked neurosurgeon

and his wife Maryland had friends over for a movie.

Shepherd fell asleep on the couch

and Marilyn walked the guests out.

Marilyn was bludgeoned to death in her bedroom.

According to her husband, he was awakened by noises

and went upstairs to discover

an intruder attacking his wife.

See, this is the part that gives me chills.

Shepherd described a struggle with the assailant

that ended with a battle outside the house.

But the story sounded far-fetched to police

and attracted so much publicity

that the first trial was deemed tainted

and his guilty verdict struck down by the US Supreme court.

A second trial found shepherd, not guilty

but the case was never solved

and the question remains, did Sam shepherd kill his wife?

Okay so, I get his story was fishy.

Truth can be stranger than fiction.

there's no way he actually did it.

But there are things that happen in real life

that didn't happen in the movie, like Shepherd's affair.
