Because of that he was badly tortured.

Christianity was outlawed
at the time in Japan.

He finally succumbed to the torture.

He was converted, if you can call it that,
and spat on the cross.

Legend has it that
he turned into a vampire.

- He kept alive by drinking blood.

I know it sounds incredible,
but the people believe it.

Ask anyone around here,
they all say the same thing.

A white man who turned
against his god,

and with nowhere to go,
wandered off into the wilderness.

'He was starving to death. He had
nothing to drink and his mind was gone.

'He could only walk.

'Who knows what he hoped to find
out there in the desert?

'Some kind of peace and end
to his torment? His god had left him.

'Dying of thirst and in total despair,

'he started to suck on his own blood
to keep going.

'Once he got the taste for blood,

'one story goes that his first victim was
a young girl. She was 15 years old.

'He killed her. And cradling the corpse
in his arms, he cried.

- 'And somehow she came back to life.'
- (Shiraki) 'Back to life?'

'When the villagers learned this,

'they attacked them as something evil
and put them both to death.'

And then they took
both their bodies and buried them

in this especially large, stout coffin.
