It wasn't happening to me.

I was in a state of paralysis.

These guys are bandits.

They're going to rob us.

He was openly a supporter of al -Qaeda.

The feelings of fear and uncertainty
were too powerful.

You cannot show any fear.

I started off work at the Sunday Mercury
as a reporter and eventually became

investigations editor.

Even pre -9 -11, I was beginning to do
stories with an Islamic slant.

As a British -born Asian myself, I had a
certain affinity with these young guys,

and when I was interviewing them, I
could speak to them in their own

My ancestors came down from Afghanistan,
so I definitely felt this personal

journey as much as a journalistic
assignment.

I want to go into Afghanistan, I want to
go by road, and then I want to come

back.

I wanted to go to Kabul and wanted to
write a story of how real Afghans were

feeling and thinking, and that was my
mission, so to speak, and everything

came below that.

I was going into a war zone.

I was really excited. It was what I'd
always wanted, you know, report on a

-life war.

So it was pure excitement and pure
adrenaline, really.

David Brooks, my editor, gave me all the
backing that I ever needed.

My day.

Had enough trust in me to think, well,
if there's a situation, he might find

himself. If there's anybody who can get
themselves out of it, it'll be Amadeep.

After spending a couple of days in
Islamabad, I had to start my trip to

to Afghanistan, and go up to Peshawar.

When I got to Peshawar, the first person
I contacted was a guy called Tariq

Khan, who was a representative or worked
for the Human Rights Commission in

Pakistan in their Peshawar office.

So what's it going to be like at the
border at Landy Coast? Basically, I was

asking him, well, what can you do for
me? How can you get me from Peshawar to

Kabul and back unscathed?

It's really busy.

At this point, I still felt that it
would be me and me alone going.

I wasn't expecting Tariq to say, well...
I will send someone with you.

Right. But that's exactly what he said.

I will put you in touch with them.

And he said, well... You will have a
great time.

They're really nice, decent people. You
know, they're my cousins.

I only had a single entry visa into
Pakistan. I didn't have a multiple entry

visa, so I couldn't leave Pakistan and
come back in again without going through

the whole rigmarole of applying for
another visa.

But one thing Tariq did say to me was
that it's something that can be sorted

at the passport office at the border.

And that advice he gave me, I would turn
it over and over again in my mind,

thinking, well, shouldn't I have done
something about it?

Tariq packed me into the car and these
two bodyguards and went as far as the

checkpoint.

The checkpoint, it basically is, you
know, where Peshawar stops and the

areas begin.

And there's a sign that clearly says, no
foreigners beyond this point.

And it was at that point Tariq left.

It was slowly coming home to me exactly
where I am and how dangerous a place

this is. This was a place where the
Taliban and al -Qaeda were fleeing and

regrouping.

And I was taken to a block of buildings,
three -storey buildings, quite

derelict, really.

And I was told I was going to meet no
shad.

I sat there for a while and I was told
we'd put no sheds on his way.

At first, he wasn't introduced to me. He
just turned up along with another

couple of people.

But there was something about him. He
stuck out.

He got straight down to business, you
know. The first thing he asked me was...

What are you doing here?

There was no niceties, no small talk.

And I liked that.

Tariq Khan said that.

Well, after initially sizing each other
up, No Shadow's obviously confident that

I'm OK.

You're a brave man.

I've not promised him any money, and
he's not getting anything at all out of

It was purely, you know, my word is my
bond, and No Shadow's word was his bond.

And that evening, their way of relaxing
was to sit down with a bottle of this

homemade hooch, which they called Kyber
water, which was distilled from sugar

cane.

I'd got a watch, which I'd... But it was
a present given to me.

It had a camera on it.

And it clearly said on the front, Rift
Camera.

Took it in black and white and, you
know, very grainy.

But it's only the tribesmen were
fascinated by it and were patting it

taking pictures of each other and, you
know, were just taken in by this amazing

gadget.

Taking that watch to Pakistan and
Afghanistan with me was probably the

mistake I made.

I must admit I was feeling a bit heavy
-headed after the long night before.

And as soon as I got up, it struck me
that this is the day I was going to get

Afghanistan. It's going to happen today.

No Shad returned with a friend of his, a
guy called Kitab Shah, and we started

formulating our plans, what are we going
to do, how are we going to get there,

what are we going to do when we get
there, and it was at this stage when No

kind of sat me down and said, look, you
are not one of us.

This is a risky venture.

You're neither Afghan... You're not a
Bataan, as they are the tribal people.

So you must be very, very discreet about
your identity.

What am I going to do?

Obviously, you're going to have to wear
a shalwar kameezah, traditional

clothing.

I was also told to buy one of these sort
of Muslim skull caps.

Again, it would sort of cover my Indian
-ness.

You're looking like a true Muslim.

All right. What is this?

I wear a Sikh bracelet, a sign of
Sikhism.

But the carrow doesn't actually come
off.

And I was told to sort of cover that.

We were about to get on to the bus which
was going to take us to the border.

and that was probably the first time
where it really struck home that, hang

you could die doing this, and is any
story worth that?

I just went up to No Shad and asked him
straight.

No Shad, tell me honestly, are we taking
a massive risk here?

Are we going to come out of this alive?

Look, right now I don't make you any
promises.

Over there is like a lawless travel
area.

But one thing I can promise you is that,
you know...

Anything that happens will happen to us
together. We have fun.

We have fun together.

If we get caught, you know, it'll be
together.

If we get shot, we'll get shot together.

As you approached the border, you could
see...

Quite a bustling atmosphere there, a lot
going on.

There's all kinds of different
characters there.

And for the life of me, I thought, well,
one of these guys could be bin Laden,

because at the time, all of al -Qaeda
fighters and a lot of the Taliban were

fleeing into the tribal areas, and it
seemed like a very kind of porous

You couldn't see who was exiting and who
was entering.

At this point, I was thinking, well...

Should I go to the passport office now
and say, well, look, I haven't got a

multiple entry, but I'm here now, so can
we sort this out now?

But I thought, well, we've got this far,
why invite any problems now and just go

with the flow, get to Afghanistan, and
like Tariq said, deal with it when you

get back.

No Shad sort of was striking a deal with
a taxi driver to take us there.

So we jumped in a taxi and we'd been
driving for about five minutes or so.

It was like, you know, a surge of
excitement kind of went through all of

know, we've done it, we're here.

We're in Afghanistan.

To hell with the consequences.

We're free.

Let's see where it takes us.

But we didn't actually see many people
or traffic along the way. I don't think

it was...

particularly advisable route to be
taking at that time.

But along the way we stopped at sort of
motorway cafes, rest stops.

It was like going into the
interplanetary ball of Star Wars where

these aliens from different planets sort
of socialising in this ball.

I'd been warned that if we go to one of
these rest stops, don't say anything to

anybody. In fact, don't even make any
eye contact with anybody because this is

free -for -all. Anybody could be in
there. There's bandits who are probably

there. There's anybody who might want to
kidnap you out there.

I was beginning to feel slightly nervous
and I thought, well, even though

Shad is slightly out of his depth here.

Maybe they'll just shoot us.

No one knows exactly where we are.

How long will it be before anybody finds
us?

And, you know, I followed the rules. I
tried not to make any eye contact with

anybody.

And, you know, it was just fascinating
looking at them, thinking, well, I

where you've been, I wonder what your
history is, where you're going, you

I was thinking, well, you'd never guess
that I'm actually from Wolverhampton in

England, you know.

And as we got closer and closer to
Kabul, we were being stopped every few

Oh, shit, what's going on?

And the first time we were stopped on
the roadside in this sort of makeshift

barrier.

Warlords have set up their own
checkpoint.

Actually, these guys are bandits.

Believe it or not, they're going to rob
her.

But he said it with a smile on his face,
so I didn't take it too seriously. But

by the time we got to about the fourth
checkpoint, you know, these were

happening quite regularly, the closer we
got to Kabul, it was unsettling. It was

the very first time that I felt in fear
of my safety.

Maybe the next one won't wave us on.

Maybe he'll just shoot us, and that will
be that.

Eventually they let us through.

So we were kind of ushered into the city
and that was it. We were in Kabul

proper.

The first impressions I got was the
utter devastation of the city itself.

On a street level, looking at these
people eye to eye, you could see the

and the sorrow and the fact that no life
isn't back to normal and isn't about to

get back to normal.

for about 10, 15 minutes before coming
across anybody.

And this is in a supposedly built -up
area where people are living, yet where

were they?

You finally made it.

The next day, my plan was to speak to as
many people as possible, as many

ordinary people as possible.

And how does it affect your family that
the Taliban have left?

Incidentally, I was taken aback by the
approachability of your average Afghan.

You know, they knew I was a journalist.

There was one woman I noticed and was
wearing these really fancy high heels.

She was wearing a burqa and all you
could see were her shoes.

And we kind of followed her for a while
and she eventually went to a bazaar and

she lifted her burqa for a second.

Excuse me.

Excuse me. Is it OK if I ask you some
questions?

She's frightened.

No, she had then stepped in. She didn't
speak English.

And Nashad was asking her what her life
was like now, and she was talking about

her family life, she was married and
kids and everything, and we finally got

onto the subject of her shoes.

Forgive me, but can I ask about the
shoes? They're very glamorous shoes.

Her reply was that wearing a burqa,
there's not much for a woman for her to

off. All you can see is my feet, so I
want my feet to look as nice as

But by the end of the day, I felt I'd
really managed to get to the heart of

Kabulis are thinking.

And OK, there was no great screaming
headline that I was going to get out of

this, but it was a quiet feeling of
satisfaction that I've done more than

normal journalist might do here.

That was my last day of freedom.

The next day, everything changed.

We had a pretty early start the next
morning. We wanted to get back into

Pakistan before nightfall.

No shad managed to find somebody with
the right price. We seemed to be

comfortable with him.

The taxi

driver, he seemed a bit...

suspicious, I suppose, as to what we had
been doing there. He was very

interested in me in particular.

And then there was various exchanges
between No Shed and the taxi drivers,

of them.

The plan originally had been to return
to Pakistan via a

smuggling route which the local
tribesmen use all the time.

That was the plan, but Noshad told me
that the taxi driver wasn't going to do

that. Even though this route is safe,
this is an unofficial route that we

take and it's not a problem. Now if we
go on the other side, then we can have a

problem. But why? What's the problem?

The taxi driver had told Noshad that he
had heard that... That there are

Americans over there.

Trying to block all the al -Qaeda and
Taliban that was fleeing Afghanistan and

using these secret routes to get into
Pakistan.

OK.

We have to go to the official way. You
know, the checkpoint that I'd left

Pakistan from.

No, sir, I can't do that. You know, my
passport. I don't have the visa. Look,

eventually I'll probably know somebody
over there, OK? And what if you don't?

I'll definitely know somebody over
there.

Let's go back to the taxi. Come on.

Come on to the taxi. Come on.

Come on.

A little DL.

A part of me definitely, in a physical
sense, felt fear and panic.

We've done all the hard part, as far as
I could see.

We've managed to come in and out of
Afghanistan unscathed.

Is this where it all is going to go
wrong?

No Shad went through the border first,
again, because he's a tribesman.

He's allowed to go in and out of
Afghanistan and into Pakistan, and he

have to show any paperwork or anything
as such.

So he kind of cased the joint, so to
speak, first, on the other side, to see

what was happening, who it was about, if
he knew anybody.

It was literally a gate, and on the
Afghan side, you had a crowd of about a

couple of hundred Afghan refugees
pushing up against the door, trying to

and on the other side, the Pakistan
military were sort of trying to push it

closed, and eventually, Noshad came back
and waving me through, saying, come on,

come on.

And I thought, well, how do I just push
myself through to the front of this

queue, and what do I do?

In the end, he just said, get your
passport out and start waving it around.

It was as simple as that. I pulled out
my British passport and, you know, like

the Red Sea, everyone kind of partied in
front of me and managed to make my way

to the front of the crowd and ended up
on the other side and finally got into

Pakistan.

As soon as I got onto the Pakistani
side, they checked my passport and...

had a quick flick through my passport
and noticed that my...

I didn't have a multiple visa.

He told us, look, I'm going to have to
pass this on to one of my superiors

We were taken into a little office which
outside it said military intelligence.

And it was only at that stage I thought,
hang on.

Something's going on here. That was the
first time I felt that things are a bit

out of mine and No Shad's control here.

We were left to sit there for a while
before a very stern -looking kind of

military intelligence bureau official
walked in.

He gave me that kind of disdainful look.

What is your name?

I'm Adib Bati.

Your real name.

Everything I said, I got the impression
he didn't believe a word of it. Where

did you get this passport?

He kind of threw it back to me and said,
it's a forgery.

I see hundreds of these every year.

You're not here as a journalist, are
you?

Started looking at my, through my
notebooks.

This is code words.

He thought this was some special code I
was writing in. This is a common ruse.

Don't you know what's going on?

They use foreign nationals. That's when
he...

referred me to a newspaper, and on the
front page of the newspaper, it more or

less said India and Pakistan about to go
to war. I'd all over Kashmir again.

This has got nothing to do with me.
Look,

I'm not. You can check it out.

What's that?

Then, of course, he noticed my watch.
Started looking

at it and noticed it said camera watch
on it.

It's just cheap.

This is a spying instrument.

And that was the phrase he used, a
spying instrument.

This is a spine instrument.

Tell me the truth.

It is the truth. It's not a spine
instrument. It's just a cheap watch.

Fine.

He left the room for a while and I asked
Noshad, well, what's going to happen

now? I don't... I don't know. He says,
I've never seen this guy before.

Is that one of us?

The guy came back after about ten
minutes and looked at me in quite a...

Sad kind of fashion. We're going to have
to process you now.

At which point No Shad sort of butted
in, turned to me and said... We're going

to jail.

Not you.

You too.

Leave.

I didn't know what to expect. I thought
the natural thing for No Shad to do

would be, yeah, OK, I'm going.

We're not going anywhere.

We're going with him.

Even the military intelligence guy, I
think, was taken aback a bit by that,

saying, well, look, you've got nothing
to do with this. We're not charging you

with anything.

So leave now.

No. I heard Noshad mentioning to him the
code, the code that they live under,

which is known as Pashtun Wali.

He was basically explaining to him,
look, you know the rules under our

This guy's under my tribe's protection.

You're going to have to make some room
for me in this jail because me and Qatab

Shah are coming with him.

Wait. For me to be sat there and to hear
that from somebody who I'd met less

than 48 hours earlier, not a penny had
exchanged hands between us, he wasn't

doing it for any financial gain.

For all he was concerned, I could well
be an Indian spy.

All I could think of was those words,
that whatever happens, we'll be in it

together. And here he was, sticking to
his words.

Our hands were shackled with these old
kind of iron fetters, all very medieval

-looking and quite frightening, I
suppose, really.

I was definitely scared.

I probably remember actually trembling
in fear at the thought of, well, what

happens now?

It was very dark and it was difficult to
make out exactly where we were or where

we were going to be kept.

But I could certainly see that this was
some kind of enclosed area, quite a...

a big gate at the front.

As you entered the gate, the first thing
you saw was a square courtyard.

As soon as we got in, I could see loads
of faces sort of peering through the

iron bars, trying to get a look at us.

Word had obviously got out that, you
know, a British person is coming, and I

think they were all, you know, sort of
straining to see who I was.

And then we were basically sort of led
into the cells.

That cell door was open. There was
literally a surge of prisoners.

They all were coming towards me, and it
was quite intimidating, really. I mean,

when it was kind of being thrown into
the lion's den almost, you know, I was a

prisoner now.

No shit. I'd obviously sensed that.

I was, you know, petrified. He took me
to one side and said, look... This is a

man's place, OK?

You're in prison, book up your ideas,
get yourself sorted, or you're not going

to survive.

He was right.

It was like something I'd never
experienced before.

It wasn't happening to me, kind of
thing.

And there was an overriding smell of...

Hashish, really.

And practically every inch of space was
taken up.

I suppose the feelings of fear and
uncertainty were too powerful that I was

almost in a state of paralysis for about
a good hour or so, where things were

happening around me, but I wasn't quite
taking them in.

And I was told that in the other room
there was a guy, sort of self -styled,

Daddy of the prison, so to speak, and
that he was very keen to see me.

Somebody's calling you. Shall I go?

You know, I could barely say anything. I
felt absolutely scared to death of it.

And so I was taken into this second room
where I was confronted by this

guy.

You wanted to see me?

Sit down.

He was very polite at first and spoke
about England and asked me about England

and, you know, are you from London and
BBC and all this kind of stuff.

Who are you from?

Hamburg. And instantly, when he said
Hamburg, all I could think of was the 9

bombers. A lot of them were from
Hamburg, you know, had studied in

Travel to war.

When it's time to fight with Americans.

He was openly... a supporter of al
-Qaeda.

He had been caught on the border in
similar circumstances that I had and

they were to release him, he'd go back
into Afghanistan and do exactly the same

thing again, fight against the Americans
and the British.

But then he seemed to notice my steel
bracelet.

Here, I think.

Yeah, that's right.

That kind of changed the conversation
completely.

His manner became very abrupt, and he
turned to me and said, This is a Muslim

prison, and I'm in charge here.

You're going to have to do as I say.

And you're going to do whatever I say.

What does that mean?

You are not living under my rules.

You're going to have to become a Muslim.

Here's a situation where you've got a
Muslim confronting a Sikh and telling

to convert.

What do I do here then?

How much of a Sikh am I? Do I really
care about being a Sikh? Am I going to

my Sikhism here?

I was surprised myself at my reaction
and the fact that I actually took a few

minutes to think, well, what is my
answer going to be?

You're a Muslim.

You believe in one God.

I'm a Sikh.

I believe in one God.

You call him Allah.

I call him whatever.

We're talking about the same person.

If by me...

admitting the fact that makes me a
Muslim, then so be it, call me a Muslim.

But if you want me to make particular
vows or affirmations, then, you

know... I can't do that.

I think he was surprised by my answer.

And there was a sense of fear, I
suppose, of this guy.

What is he capable of, exactly?

Cool. But I felt really good after that
conversation, thinking, well, yeah, I've

been kind of put to the test, and I kind
of surprised myself with my own answers

and kind of was surprised at how, I
suppose, deep -rooted my belief is when

comes to shove.

We started hearing rumours that we were
going to be sent to the interrogation

centre. They're going to ask you
questions.

In me, it just evoked feelings of
beatings and forced confessions and

So I remember that evening, again,
going, you know, being back to that

feeling again, thinking, right, here we
go again.

And my main worry was that I'm going to
be separated from No Shed.

So that night, it was one of those
nights where I just wanted to put my

down and sort of not get up again until
it was all over.

We were taken in the back of a jeep to
the short distance from Landikotu to

Peshawar.

I realised that whatever happens, No
Shed's going to be with me.

So it certainly brought me closer to
him.

We eventually arrived at Peshawar Police
Station, which is where the Joint

Interrogation Centre is.

And straight away we were taken to what
I would describe as a dungeon.

The guards, you know, this was a
completely fresh set of guards.

They were being very aggressive,
obviously trying to set the tone for us.

The actual conditions were really,
really bad. It was just a bare concrete

floor. There was no covering there
whatsoever.

The cells themselves were covered with
graffiti, and a lot of it seemed like

Mujahideen -type graffiti. People had
scrawled pictures of Kalashnikovs and

tanks. I could presume that these are...
you know jihadist type literature here

i thought that first night was pretty
lonely i

remember it being very cold down there
as well and i remember cockroaches

crawling along the floor

Then the next morning is when the
interrogation started proper.

So, Mr.

Amardeep Basi.

That's right.

I remember one of the first things he
said to me was... You are a Sardar?

Yes, I'm Sikh.

Sikh.

Do you have a nice watch?

Can I have one?

It's a spy watch.

No! It's a spy watch.

I basically just didn't say anything
really while he carried on questioning

He was quite aggressive by that time and
started looking through my notebooks

and then again, you know, couldn't make
heads or tails of it.

What about this?

Is this some special type of spy code?

That shorthand... Listen, I'm not going
to buy this.

And then all of a sudden the questioning
changed again and he started talking

about my time in Afghanistan.

I was just interviewing Afghani people
in Kabul. I wanted to know... No, you

were there to embarrass Pakistan.

You know, were you trying to show the
world how porous our borders are?

Let me tell you one thing.

Are you being treated well here?

Well, yes, I suppose.

She will not if she will not cooperate
with me.

They sort of left me with the thought
that, look, you have a think about what

you've been doing here.

And when you've got the right answers,
come and talk to us then, because you're

giving us the wrong answers at the
moment.

About the fifth or sixth day, I began to
pick up rumours, I suppose, from my

interrogators that somebody from the
British embassy in Islamabad was coming

see me.

Now, bear in mind, I'd been in jail for
about 12 days now, and then...

Part of me was thinking, well, why the
hell have they taken so long?

Good afternoon, Mr Bassey.

Afternoon. How are you doing?

All right, considering, thanks.

Good. Eventually I was taken to one of
the offices nearby where this very

English -looking gentleman was waiting
for me, all suited and booted in the 42

-degree heat.

Are they treating you well?

Yeah, I suppose.

OK, so how can I help then?

Well, I'm locked up here, so what can we
do?

There's not a great deal we can do.

You know, if you are convicted, you're
looking at at least 15 years.

15 years?

They've got your notes, they've got your
photographs.

You know, if you are convicted, we
guarantee to see you at least once a

That's all I can offer you, I'm afraid.

But one thing that really struck me was
he said, Spole... Have you been tortured

yet? They haven't tortured you?

No.

The meeting with him left me none the
wiser as to what was going to happen to

me.

Throughout that week, the only exercise
I got was going up the stairs from the

dungeon up to the interrogation centre.

And days were melting to days, hours
melting to hours, and you kind of lose

track of what's happening. And it kind
of numbs your mind.

You're just there living as a basic
human being.

It was at that time again when it first
kind of struck me to think, well, hang

on, there's a bit of pressure on No Shed
here as well.

He's having to vouch for somebody who he
doesn't know.

And I may well be an Indian spy, and how
is that going to reflect on him?

But a part of me wanted me to say to
him, look, No Shad, look, you've done

enough for me now.

If you can get out of here unscathed,
then get out.

But then, you know, the selfish part of
me was thinking, well, hang on, you're

nothing without No Shad.

I really felt without them, I'm going to
crumble, I suppose, really.

And then we were...

put into the back of a jeep again.

You know, no shad didn't say anything.
Katab shad didn't say anything. We were

just kind of looking around, hoping the
other would say something.

And we were taken from Peshawar to
another part of Peshawar.

And the journey's probably only about a
20 -minute journey.

But I remember being sat in the back of
this jeep and just looking up at the

sunlight and marvelling at the sunlight,
really. I mean, after a week of not

seeing sunlight, something as simple as
shafts of light coming down was...

You know, exhilarating.

You know, catching a glimpse of a tree
and seeing a bird on a tree singing.

And after only a week of being deprived
of these things, it was like, you know,

saying being born again, almost.

No sad seemed to know the prison
governor, who again was part of the

He was constantly smoking hash, as were
all the other prison guards.

And anyway, we had a really good meal.
We were fed really well.

Watched some TV, and I thought, this is
all right. If I'm going to be spending

the rest of my incarceration, however
long it might be, this isn't too bad.

And eventually, after a couple of hours
of socialising, whatever, we were going

elsewhere.

Prison guard kind of said, right, you
know, come with me, you're going to have

to come with me now. I really thought he
was going to show me the toilet or

something, but he basically showed us a
cell.

There was rubbish and food left over
lying on the floor, and just the fact

it was blazing hot outside, there was an
overwhelming smell of human waste, I

suppose, really.

And my heart really sank when they
opened that cell.

This is it.

The ceiling was so low that if you
raised your hands above your head, you

couldn't do it without getting your
hands caught up in the ceiling fan.

And in that cell, there was already four
people and we were told, right.

Sorry, but this is where you're going to
be. I thought they were joking for us.

I thought, well, if that's where No Shed
and Qatabshah are going, then I suppose

I'm going there with them.

I kind of really sat down and thought to
myself, well, you could be here for

quite a while.

I began to kind of settle myself down
for the long run.

When things were getting to me, I think
at about the same time, things were

beginning to get to No Shed.

Because I could tell that No Shed
himself was under a lot of pressure.

I realised how much of a tightrope No
Shed was walking.

I mean, there he was, son of a
chieftain, protecting a Westerner, not

Westerner, but a Westerner of Indian
origin.

You know, on the face of it, I was enemy
number one.

to the people in that area and here was
a man of you know good pedigree looking

after me

are free it was as simple as this he
literally opened the door and he

said it in english as well You're free.

So I thought, is he taking the mickeys?
Am I really free?

You know, what's going to come next,
really?

And I just basically just, you know,
walked out of the cell.

I was directed to the political agent's
office, and he was there waiting for me.

He gave me my luggage and said, you
know, this is yours, this is all

He said, well, you're going to be
deported.

We're going to try and get you on a
flight today.

And then I was told, basically, you're
going to be released.

What about my two friends?

No, no, they're not.

What? Only your order?

And at that point, I wasn't sure if
Noshad knew that he wasn't going to be

released and Qatab Shah knew they
weren't going to be released.

So... I didn't really say anything when
I got back to the cell.

You got your bag back, huh?

Yeah.

So I spent the next hour or so just
chatting to No Shad and the other

You didn't give me your watch back,
though.

Just looking at No Shad, I could see he
was showing happiness for my sake. The

fact that I was happy that I was being
released.

Oh, dear.

What a lot of trouble that watch caused
me.

You know, we'd thought about...

The day we were going to be relieved.

I had these pictures in my mind that,
you know, we'll leave prison, we'll have

great last night, and then I'll be off,
and, you know, that will be the happy

ending to all of this.

I can't believe I'm getting quite
emotional about it, really, because that

really was probably the most kind of
painful part of it, really.

And it was really awkward.

It was the look in our eyes that said it
all, basically, you know.

My goodbye to him was looking into his
soul, in effect, and the same for him to

me. And that connection at that time,
you know, it was electrifying.

So we kind of left it unspoken.

There was nothing I could say.

The most difficult time was turning my
back on No Shad and not looking back.

Altogether, I spent 28 days in jail. No
Shad and Kitab Shah ended up spending

another week in jail after my release.

And my mind was still in Pakistan.

All I could think of was, when am I
going to go back?

How am I going to go back?

And my mind was with Noshad still.

What's he doing right now?

He's five years on now. But I know that
he's there for me forever and ever, and

vice versa.

A big chunk of me had been left back in
Pakistan.

I don't think he's still there, to be
honest with you. And I don't think I'm

going to reclaim that part of me until I
go back again.

Where in the world are you going to make
friends like that?

It just doesn't happen. It's not going
to happen.

You want to keep friends like that?

I can certainly see my friendship with
No Shad and the tribe and his father

passing on from generation to
generation.

He's got children.

If I ever have children, you know, I
will tell them about my experiences and

hope that they will sort of follow my
footsteps.
