us come over to their house

till we get our bat problem
taken care of.

[Emma] Girls are still in
their English clothes,

so we need to get them dressed
in more modest clothing.

-[Kendra] I love it!
-[Aaron] You girls look great.

Wait, Esmeralda, why are
you not in a dress?

[Esmeralda] They said, "I can't
change unless I do my lashes

and my nails."
Feels like mean girl energy

and, like, being,
like, targeted.

[Judah] Breathe.

How do you feel?
That is a lot.

[Esmeralda] Yeah, it's a lot.

I don't know,
it's just like...

Like, I feel like coming here,
it's like I'm losing

every part of me, you know?

So it's just like, a lot to deal
with all at once [sniffs].

Paula and Emma kind of
pressured me into removing

my lashes and nails, even though
we kind of previously talked

about me having a little bit
more time.

Judah still has his beard
and goatee, and they let him

keep that 'cause he refused
to shave it off.

I just feel annoyed and angry
that I didn't get to change like

everyone else, but I just have
to get over it and I'm not

ready to deal with it
right now.

Can I share something I was
thinking last night?

[Esmeralda chuckles] Yeah.

So we have like no mirrors
in the house.

Yeah.

So in L.A. or wherever we live,
sometimes I wonder if we're

so self-conscious with our looks
because we constantly are

looking in a mirror.
-Yeah.

And like here, I have no idea
what I'm looking like.

Yeah.

Like to me, like I feel
beautiful and like confident

with my personality.
You know what I mean?
-Yeah.

And I'm just like,
"Oh, I bet I look great."

If I saw myself in a mirror,
maybe it would be

a different story.
-Yeah.

That's one thing I kinda envy
about them.

They don't have that standard.

So it's like, they don't have
that same pressure

that we have, you know?
-Exactly, yeah.

I completely understand where
Esme is coming from because

living in Texas or even in L.A.,
like our beauty standards are

set so high that it is
so damaging to ourselves

and our feeling of ourselves.

And so, I really hope that Esme
decides to go through

with the lashes and the nails
because this feeling of,

like, love within myself
and the beauty within myself is

such an empowering feeling,

and I really want her
to experience that as well.

If there's a way that you're
making the decision,

like, you're like,
OK, it's either the nails

or the lashes or something else
so that you can be a part of,

like, this with us.

Because I want it to be,
like, your choice.

I don't want it to be,
like, you have to do this.

[Esmeralda] Looking at Kendra,
her not having the typical

clothes that she usually wears
and no makeup on,

it's not so bad.

to take that next step too.

Last night, after everything
that happened,

everything that was going on,
I don't want nobody to feel like

I'm not trying or that I don't
wanna be here.

I'm here to grow as a person,
to connect with nature,

connect with God, and learn
how to do things with my hands.

But it's hard.

-What's this horse's name?
-[James] Harley.

[James] And now, fun part.

We're ready to go hook
to the buggy.

-You wanna lead him?
-Uh, sure.

I've never led a horse before.
Come on, buddy.

My name is Judah.

I'll be your caretaker
for the day.

We are actually
ready to head out.

[Judah] What side is
the driver's side?

[James] Opposite from a vehicle,
in the U.S., at least.

-[James] It has a brake pedal,

a little bit similar to a car.

You have to pump it a couple
times to fill up the lines

with brake fluid.

-Turn signals?
-[buggy bleeps]

This is real horsepower.

A buggy is the total opposite
of what my dream car would be.

A buggy is more so like
a box on wheels.

It's old, and it's
one horsepower -- literally.

-[James] All right, gas pedal.

-He won't know what you said.

[Judah] Oh [bleep]!

This thing got no suspension!

He needs some other shocks
on this thing.

If the Amish let me
do my one-twos

on a horse and buggy
and customize it,

I'm gonna have to throw
some wooden rims on there.

so it can match the black rims,

As I'm sitting in the seat,
I'm like, "Yo, this is insane."

I'm literally driving
the horse and the buggy.

I've never even ridden
on a horse.

I'm feeling the rush.
I'm feeling the speed.

I'm like, "Yeah, I'm here
to get to our destination,

get to where we need to go,

and learn how to drive
this thing."

[upbeat jazz music playing]

Yeah, breaks too -- There's
somebody coming from the front.

[Judah] Oh, I see, I see.
I can't brake 'em.

-Brake.
-[James] Brake, brake.

-Harley, brake.
-Pump, pump a couple more times.

I never thought my life would
end on a horse and a buggy,

but that's what it's looking
like it's gonna be today.

We're almost back home.

All I see is the horse's
blowhole and the largest clump

And I know we all poop.

That's a real thing in life.

But it wasn't on my bingo cards
to watch a horse poop

right in front of my face.

It was just the most disgusting
thing I've ever seen

in my life.
And it smelled so bad.

Walking doesn't seem so bad,
after all.

[James]
This life is not for everyone.

But, A plus for learning.
Or trying, at least.

It feels pretty cool to be
accepted in this community,

especially from James.

And I know I have to make
a decision sooner rather than

later to tell James that I'm bi,
but I don't wanna come

out here and be rejected.

I think hiding my sexuality
keeps me safe, and I don't know

if the Amish are ready to hear
that, and I don't want to be

shunned before they even get
a chance to really know me.

[music ends]

[soft music playing]

Are you nervous for,
like, their reaction?

I'm a little bit.

What if they're like,
"You still can't [indistinct]."

"Sorry, still not good
enough for me."

[Esmeralda] I'm having my lashes
and nails removed, and I never

thought I'd be seeing that.
I feel naked.

I just feel bare.

[door knocks]

-[Esmeralda] Hi.

-[Emma] Hey [gasps].

-Look at me.
-Oh, you got your nails done?

-I did.
-Oh, nice.

-They took your eyelash.
-They removed them.

It's very, very hard
to become Amish.

It is a cultural shock.

To Esmeralda, it felt like
she was giving up her identity.

So, I give Esmeralda credit
for what she did.

I'm very proud of Esmeralda.
That was a big step.

[Emma] You want to put
your dress on now?

I do -- Am I allowed now?

-[Emma] Yeah.
-Am I ready for that?

Your dress is still in here.

Here, let me see if I can find
your covering.

-[Kendra] Are you excited?
-[Esmeralda] A little bit.

If you want to put the dress

they finally gave me

the go-ahead to get dressed.

I feel like I can be less
judged now.

They don't have anything

I just feel better that
I just decided to do it

doing my nails since I was,

like, I don't know,
maybe 16, 15.

Same with my lashes.

I probably look so much younger

It's, like, all part
of the process and, like,

trying to just get used to
and, like, feeling comfortable

in, like, my skin again.

Amish women are supposed
to dress very modestly out of

reverence and respect to God.

You're beautiful
however God made you.

And Esmeralda looks very
beautiful in her dress.

Esmeralda still has a long way
to go, but this is a big step

into actually conforming
and living in

the Amish lifestyle.

It's a big change,
so I'm proud of her.

I know, look at us!

Oh, we're kind
of like, matching.

I know this is very hard
for Esmeralda

because in the English world,
everybody's trying to be

Instagram models with lashes

and, you know, all the get up.
And so to take that off

and be vulnerable, like,
I'm extremely proud

of her.
Like, she looks amazing.

And this ain't easy.

Like, only the tough can
survive the Amish.

Esmeralda, I'm very proud
of you.

You sacrificed a lot to come
into this community.

-And to be a part of it.

So it just feels nice
that everyone's, you know,

um, yeah, like now I'm able
to experience it with everyone

and I'm dressed now, so.

I feel like I'm being robbed.

I didn't get to experience
this Amish community,

see what the Amish living

was to see if it was a right
fit for me and my kids,

and I didn't get to do that.

James is ripping it
from my hands.

I feel like some time
has passed.

I have been gone from it,
and they've all progressed

through it, and...

I still want to pursue it.

Kendra and I have a bond.

Leaving that and not having
explored that, that sucks.

These five people that I've
come into this with,

I mean, I'm concerned for them.

If this is how I'm treated,
I'm concerned that they're

gonna be treated similarly.

I don't think James is crazy.

I know James is crazy because
he chased me with a [bleep] axe.

I was humiliated and
traumatized, but if I want to

join the Amish community,
then I have to face this guy.

[Billie Jo] Just like everything
else here, nothing is easy.

There's always so much to do.

The fields, they're endless.

And I hate hearing
the chores for the day.

It's an extreme amount.

And I feel like you're
never done.

I think that what I've learned
here and am learning here is

it's a life that I'm still

getting used to.
You know, like,

it's a lot of work.

[Billie Jo] Oh, gosh.

I'm so tired.

You guys aren't used
to getting up early?

No, I'm definitely not,
but I do it.

We fed the mule.

[Esmeralda] Oh, yeah,
we did, and the cows.

And the cows.

-[Esmeralda] Yeah.
-And it's a lot of walking.

-It sure is.
-There's a lot of land to cover.

I'm not afraid of work.

As far as the work, I know I'm
gonna have to take it

a little easy on them to start
with 'cause they're not used

to manual labor like we are.
Our work ethic is tied to God.

Scripture does tell us

that "Idle hands are
the devil's workshop."

We try to keep busy,
try to keep ourselves occupied,

minds occupied.

In order to join the Amish
community, they need a good

work ethic.
They need to get a job.

Sarah and I are going to do

our best to help them through
this time.

Earlier today, we were talking
about meeting people.

Don't you call a woman
that's not married an old maid?

[Allen] Yeah.

I think in order for me
to feel more comfortable

in this community, I probably
need to find me an Amish man.

How do you meet Amish
and Mennonite people?

What did you use for Sarah?
What was Sarah's pick-up line?

[Allen]
I actually went to her house.

[Esmeralda] Oh, you're bold.

-[Billie Jo] Oh.
-[Esmeralda] Straight to it.

You went right
to her house and said...

The worst she can do is
say "No."

-[Esmeralda] You're right.
-So.

[Billie Jo] I'm very intimidated
by men, and I don't trust them.

So, I haven't been on a date
in a very long time.

If I want to live a happy Amish
life, as much as I'd like

to say I don't wanna date
until I'm 70, realistically,

that's not gonna happen.

Realistically, yeah,
I do need to meet someone.

And I want to be Amish,
so it's best that I find

an Amish suitor.
So I need to do it.

It just scares the [bleep]
out of me.

With this partial hearing
and no hearing aids, in a lot

of these conversations,
yeah, I feel left out.

I feel like I'm not included.

They include me, but because of
this, I don't feel like

I'm getting the information,
and I'm missing so much.

I can see that Aaron is very

irritated with the fact
that he can't have

his hearing aids
that he was used to.

I do hope that
everything's OK with him,

but right now I'm hoping that

he's willing to work
with his hands.

Allen's bringing me to a house
to paint.

I'm not sure exactly where
it's at, but I know that

we will be meeting one of
his Amish friends there.

It's part of the community,
building houses, raising barns.

And, you know, if you don't
know how to do these trades,

then how are you gonna be
part of the community?

There are times where
the Amish work for the English

people, working around
the house, painting,

putting siding on, et cetera.

But I guess the biggest thing

is to impress the guys we're
gonna be working for.

in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Allen here contacted me
about getting Aaron a job

to do some painting.

And obviously, his first day,
he's gonna have to,

you know, learn some steps.

So it's like churning butter.

[Aaron] OK.

[Jacob] Take your bucket and
just put a little coat on it.

You don't wanna go too thick.

I've had personal experience
with Amish craftsmanship.

They're super hard workers,
and they get stuff done really

fast and efficient.

I'm not gon' push you too
hard, but you're gonna have

to work a lot faster.

Dude, it's so easy to just

get a spray gun right now,

impressed with my painting

skills, which is funny,
considering Jacob and Allen are

This is my first time pouring
cream into a butter churner.

What I know about the Amish
people is that they look out

for each other.

And just this morning, BJ was
just saying that she's looking

for an Amish guy.

So, Jacob, I got a question

[Aaron] Because, I mean,
if you have a preference

for English girls, maybe we can

find you one.

With this partial hearing
and no hearing aids, normally

I can read lips, but I have
my back turned toward them,

and I can't hear anything,
and I can't comprehend what

they need from me, and it's
incredibly frustrating.

Do you think I did a good job?

Uh, that's a decent job
for a first day.

I'm gonna expect better,

you know, as time goes
on, you know.

I think Jacob was impressed

It's an Amish-approved
hearing aid.

I know taking Aaron's hearing
aids away caused him

a big struggle, so...

we promised to get him some

an app or a phone.

They are older
technology, battery-powered.

They don't connect to a phone.

Are you willing
to at least try them?

I appreciate that James is
trying to help me out,

but the problem is
these hearing aids, even if they

were a $10,000 pair,
it's still gonna affect me.

I have to go through this whole
process where my head

has to adjust to everything.

So I knew instantly that
these were not going to work.

what I've always done,

is just, learn to adapt.

The fact that Allen cares
enough to throw me back into

the dating world
is nerve-wracking,

but also very
sweet of him to do.

I've heard that Amish dating
is very simple, like

the Amish life.

definitely nervous.

I've got butterflies.

He could very well sweep
me off my feet.

So I don't wanna say
the wrong things.

[Allen] Courting in our culture
is very basic and simple.

When you had an interest
in a girl, you would go to

her house and you would ask

We'd be at home Saturday
nights, and we'd be up in

our room and wait on some
of the boys to show up.

It was not always successful,
you know, sometimes she'd turn

you down, but if she did
accept, you know, you would sit

and chat, you know, and try
to get to know each other.

We dated for two and a half
years before we got married.

She put up with my dumb
jokes and...

Actually, I never dated anyone.

He was the only one
I ever dated, so.

Yes.

I love the haircuts.
I love the suspenders.

I love all of that.
I was certainly comfortable.

Have you ever thought about
wanting to be English?

There's times, you know,

totally sure, you know,

one way or the other, but...

So, what are some of the things
that you kind of miss, or maybe

because you're Amish
you can't do?

It'd be nice sometimes to have
a car to do stuff.

And there's kind of tough
