If you are willing to put
your body on the line and go all in,

some great things can happen.

This 2025 season is unprecedented

by the number of teams
that could win a premiership.

There is no doubt
over the last four to five years

every single club across the league

have now got star players
who are dominant,

which are making these teams
really hard and unpredictable.

[Brian Taylor] This has to be the
biggest game ever played in this state.

We're in a do-or-die scenario.

[Brian] Did it get over?
No contact. It's a goal!

The pressure starts to rise
and the anxiety

and you start to get a bit more tense.

Pressure's good. It's part of the game.

As soon as you stop feeling the pressure,
you're probably done.

Marcus Bontempelli says signing
a new contract isn't front of mind.

As I start to get older, legacy's
important. I can't afford to wait.

Every club would love
to have a conversation with you.

Every time they speak about you,
it's always, "The number-one draft pick."

You know me. More than anything,
I was blown away by how much it blew up.

I was like, "Oh, I've let 'em down."

As a mum, it breaks your heart
that someone

could say something about you,
and we know it's not true.

I remember, I was like, "Jesus,
this is taking a real toll on me."

Georgia, I always thought
I'd end up with her.

I've always been competitive.

Maybe a little bit of a chip
on my shoulder.

[Toby] Always pretty keen
to play a physical brand of footy and...

lots of people out there
that get highly offended or angry

with how I go about it.

I just think, "Well, if I see you
in a boxing ring one-on-one,

"we'll see how you go,

"but until then,
I couldn't give a fuck what you say."

try and create goals.

[Toby] Yeah, always happy
to push boundaries.

I thought it'd be good fun.

[Brian] Was it deliberate?

And they are attacking Greene.

[solemn music]

[Sam McClure] Toby plays on the edge.

That's what makes Toby great.

It's also one of the things
that gets him in trouble.

There's been multiple incidents

over the course of his career.

[reporter 1] Toby Greene
referred directly to the tribunal

for making contact with an umpire.

[reporter 2] Greene has been charged

with making unreasonable or unnecessary
contact to the eye region.

[Jordan Lewis] His rap sheet is
as long as anyone in AFL history.

Eye gouging.

Kicking guys in an area where
you probably shouldn't be kicked in.

Pulling hair.
Just sort of ratbag behaviour.

He's been the villain. He's been the guy
that you went to barrack against.

Public enemy number one.

the history been like with Toby Greene?

Any time there's a bit of a scrap...

[Brian] Toby Greene
and Bontempelli going here.

...Toby's somewhere in the thick of it.

[Brian] They step toe-to-toe and
Bontempelli didn't take a backward step.

[Marcus] Seemed to always
cross paths and it would boil over

to the point where we'd end up
in a bit of a barney.

So, yes, he is an antagonist.

[Toby] And he might call me
soft, weak, insipid.

I don't know. Something like that.

To be honest, these days,
I really... Don't really care.

[Toby] It's the most physical sport
on the planet, no doubt about it.

I've always tread
pretty close to the line

of what's acceptable and what's not
and, um, gotta get that balance right

and make sure that... that, you know,
you're playing every week.

[pensive music]

So once both players have done it twice,

you move down to the goal square
and you can have one kick each.

You gotta take it in turns. First team

GWS Giants have been in
incredible form throughout the year

and looking for a top-four finish.

At their very best,
they look like they could be

a real premiership threat this year.

I'm a premiership player.

For Toby, you look at the evolution
of him as a player, as a leader,

but he certainly
hasn't changed his approach

in the way that he is so wired to win.

He's just relentless
in chasing a premiership.

[Toby] I've been pretty good the last
3 or 4 years without getting suspended.

A fair bit of it's maturity.

A fair bit just understanding,
you know, your role in the team.

And especially as captain now, like,
that's just not on, not acceptable.

-[team exclaims]
-Great pressure.

[Tom Green] We're in a really
good stage in the competition,

in a position to win a premiership.

But this season is more even
than any season that I can remember.

Someone's gonna be really
unlucky to miss out, but...

So if we win out from here, we're in.

[Tom] Toby, he's been massively
influential every single week.

You want your captain out there with you
while we're playing must-win games.

A lot's gotta go right to make
sure you're a chance to win it.

And I don't want to miss
big games and big finals.

I'll try and stop getting suspended,

but I won't really change
the way I go about playing.

we met in high school.

So I played basketball
against her as a kid.

And she was always this girl that was
pretty much better than all the boys.

[both chuckling]

[Toby] And I knew straightaway, "I want
to marry her and have kids with her."

[both grunting and laughing]

-[Georgia exclaims]
-[laughing] That's a foul, tackling me.

Toby, you can't have an excuse
because you didn't make a shot.

She certainly keeps me in line.
She's very good at that.

-[Toby] Next score wins.
-Next score wins right as you get it?

[Toby grunting]

[Georgia] Do you want me
to say fiancée or partner or...

[interviewer] Fiancée's right, isn't it?

-Is that scary?
-No.

-You tell me. Is that scary?
-Yeah, it sounds scary to me, but...

I don't know. I guess I am.

Georgia Stirton is my name

and I'm Toby Greene's fiancée.

-[both laughing]
-You cannot do that.

-You can't put your elbow out.
-It's my space. Of course I can.

He is the opposite on the football field
to what he is in real life.

I'm not saying he's an angel because he
definitely has crossed the line at times

and has deserved some of the backlash.

[Toby chortles]

[Georgia] I even have friends
that haven't met him ask me,

"What's he like? Is he angry?"

I'm like, "He is so far from angry."

He... I can't do anything
to get him angry.

[upbeat music]

[Toby] Yes!

[Georgia] I sometimes just wish people
could see there is a lot more to Toby.

You seen that before?

[Georgia] Our daughter is Isla.
She's 18 months now.

For Toby, it's the first time something's
come that's bigger than football.

[Toby] What are you doing?

Oh, you want a drink.

[Georgia] It just is amazing
what little girls can do to tough men.

[Georgia] I always knew
Toby would be a great dad,

but I was a little bit worried
of how it would be with a little girl

and the backlash
when he does cross those lines.

[dramatic music builds]

[Georgia] People were saying,
"I hope your family members die,"

or, "You should kill yourself,"

or I've had DMs saying, you know,
"I saw him cheating with girls,"

and, "Does he bash you up?"

It probably affects me more than Toby.

[Toby] Yeah, mate, yep!

[dramatic music]

[Georgia] Toby's been good
for a few years

and even though he knows
the Swans are a big game,

he knows they're gonna
get into him, you know,

he will actually either walk away
or just, like, not give anything.

And that is so different to the Toby
of, like, maybe six, seven years ago.

So there is a bit of trust in him
that, you know,

he's not put himself
in these situations now.

[dramatic music builds]

Friday night, bright lights,
prime-time football.

Greater Western Sydney are looking

to cement a spot in the top four.

Sydney are trying
to remain in the finals hunt

while their season
has a heartbeat.

-So the stakes are massive.

the club on the eve of a finals series.

The only cloud that once again
hangs over this football club

is what will happen with Toby Greene

and the on-field actions
that have reared its head again?

It will be a nervous 24 hours
at the Giants,

waiting to see what happens
if Toby is suspended

and what that might do
to the rest of their season.

[Georgia] It was, you know, frustrating.

Like, it's happened so many times.

[Marcus] I was lucky enough
to be named as part of the top 25 players

of the Western Bulldogs Football Club,
which is pretty big for me.

We keep saying to everybody,
"How did we get this guy?"

Yeah. Well, I'm just as lucky.

[interviewer] What do you prefer
to be called? Marcus? Bont? The Bont?

Oh, in this setting, Marcus 'cause I'm
not wearing the kit, not in the jumper.

[James] Look out, Bontempelli!

[Marcus] But when I'm in
the red, white and blue,

I do feel like a different person.

I've almost got split personality.

[commentator] Bontempelli!

The Captain! The Finisher!

Oh, there's nothing this man can't do!

Marcus Bontempelli is The Bont.

The Bont is like
some kind of Marvel superhero.

It's the hair.

It's the facial structure.

[laughs]

Marcus Bontempelli for me is a unicorn.

He's tall, he's athletic,
he's highly skilled

and has leadership qualities
that a lot of players don't possess.

[James] Oh! This is some play!

[Dylan] He's 12 years
into his footballing career

and he'd be the best player in the AFL,
and has been for a long time.

[Marcus] When people ask me about
dealing with pressure and expectation,

funnily enough, I'd look at myself
as the kid who underachieved

or maybe hadn't quite yet
reached his potential.

At two, Marcus Bontempelli.

[applause]

I feel like all the good things you've
done or that have happened to you

have either been because
of different circumstances,

you know, whether it's been luck...

I'm lucky that early in my career,
I had some early success.

We won the premiership in 2016.

20 at the time. For me it was like,
"Oh, how good's this?

"Like, won a flag. Unbelievable."

I mean, winning the next premiership

has been on my mind

for the best part of the last five years.

[dramatic music]

[Alister] Brisbane and
the Western Bulldogs tonight.

It's a huge Friday night clash.

[James] Huge away game here for the Dogs.

Just sitting outside the eight,

they would love to find
a way to snatch this.

And we are away!

[commentator]
The Dogs' defence haven't been set.

You can see how scattered they are.

-[crowd cheering]

[Marcus] In the games
where teams have gotten the better of us,

they've probably just been
a bit tougher in the contest.

[Alister] Brisbane on fire!

[Marcus] We're the ones that
go to ground. They keep their feet.

[Alister] And what a moment,
what an opportunity they squander.

[Marcus] When the intensity goes up,
I don't reckon we do things well enough.

-[siren blaring]
-[crowd cheering]

[Alister] That's now
for the Western Bulldogs

eight losses this season
to sides in the top eight.

[Marcus] We've struggled
to consistently perform

at a really high standard for a whole
sort of season and a period of time.

[dramatic music]

You know, on the brink of 30

and as I start to get older,
closer to the end than I am to the start,

legacy's important.

I can't afford to wait.

[Abbey] Following the Brisbane loss,

if you're Marcus Bontempelli,
you're thinking,

"In the back end of my career,
are we going to be a serious contender?"

[Josh] Missing finals,
it'll feel like another season wasted

for Marcus Bontempelli.

Maybe that's a key reason

why the contract decision's
been pushed down the road.

Marcus Bontempelli says signing

of his four-year deal.

You know, I've played
my whole career here, 250-odd games.

That's, like, half your life, which is
a long time to spend in one place.

Mentally and emotionally, it gets
harder and harder to find new ways

to invigorate yourself
to go back to the trough.

[Jordan] I would assume,
if Marcus looked at the club

and understood that his next premiership
wouldn't be coming from that side,

that you would have
to genuinely ask yourself,

"Am I better off elsewhere?"

[Marcus] And I just saw it as a great
opportunity to invest in potentially,

but then secondly to explore my own ideas
and creativity in a business sense.

family of six, three sisters.

Probably bullied and pushed around a bit
and dominated.

If there was any sense of arrogance
or confidence starting to seep in,

they were pretty quick to squash it...

which I lean into as a way
to sort of drive you a little bit more

rather than get a bit complacent.

[Marcus] The next game,
I've got the Giants.

They're a bit of an old foe,
the Giants, you know?

It is one headache to have to think about

when Toby Greene's
in the opposition team.

And there's always been
something that has boiled over

in games between us and the Giants.

So it's one in the calendar
that you want to win, you know?

Certainly it is for me anyway.

[Sam] For the best part of 10 years,

the Giants and the Dogs
have absolutely hated each other.

-[dramatic music]
-[indistinct commentary]

[Brian] Bontempelli's the target!
He's on the bottom of all of that!

There's certainly no love lost
between those two.

It's one of the biggest rivalries
in the game.

[Brian] Goodness gracious me!

[commentator] Oh!

-Bontempelli has been targeted all day.
-[crowd booing]

Greene grabs Bont by the hair
and slams his head into the ground.

[dramatic music swells]

[Sam] The rivalry exploded.

There'd been a few things
sort of leading up to that.

Marcus dump-tackled Brett Deledio

and then I just wasn't happy with that

so decided to pull his hair.

[Marcus] I was trying
to set a bit of an example as well

and be physical at different points,
which boiled over into another moment

where everyone ended up
on top of each other.

And with Toby, he's probably keen
to just get away with a little bit more.

He probably wasn't happy
with me pulling his hair.

But I couldn't really care these days.

[interviewer] At any point,
was it personal with Toby?

Yeah, yeah. Um...

Seem to always
cross paths and butt heads.

So it's just one of those things
that you do take personally.

year we went to the All-Australian awards

and I saw Bontempelli move his name tag

so that he didn't have to sit
next to Toby Greene.

An hour later, they're having
an All-Australian photo on stage

and there's a lot of camaraderie.

And Bontempelli and Toby Greene
are standing next to each other.

They hardly say anything to each other
and don't really look at each other.

[Toby] Nah, we're not mates.

[interviewer] Do you guys get along?

Oh, I've never had a beer with him.

Toby chose to push his forearm

into the back of Isaac Heeney's head.

his one-match ban for striking.

He's the one guy that
we probably couldn't afford to lose.

against the Bulldogs is not great.

The last time we beat them
was two years ago.

Toby kicked four goals in a quarter

and was really the difference
between us winning and losing.

Both teams are trying to make finals

and also being captain,
you gotta lead by example,

so it was, um, disappointing.

[Marcus] Toby in trouble again.

Um, probably not
the first time he's sort of...

Yeah, an elbow's ended up
where it shouldn't.

[Marcus] He's actually
performed quite well

against the Bulldogs in the past.

So if you don't have to worry about that,
that's a good thing.

[crowd cheering]

[Marcus] All about contest and pressure.
