i work about nine to five it's not like
a job where you go to and you uh

finish and you don't you bring it home
uh you feel it it's always exciting in

some kind of way sometimes it's painful
because it doesn't you find you have

situations

that actually change your life or change
your way of thinking?

Oh, yeah. The people do that sometimes.

I mean, what you see coming through that
door sometimes, the pain that they're

in. You know,

some things are humorous. I laugh a lot,
though.

Do you come across a lot of prophets
there?

I think so, sometimes.

And you never know. And I talk to
everybody, see.

Give me an example, someone you talk to.
Well, I talked to a boy last night.

who I think was a young prophet, he was
in pain.

But he was talking about not this
particular thing, but he just knew how

survive. The way he knew how to survive,
to me, means that he's in pain all the

time, whether it's physical or not. He
was telling me that if you come in with

bullet wound, how you got to just put
your hand and hold that bullet

there or bullets.

And just keep your head up and keep
walking, walk on in the hospital, and

positive attitude.

So I looked at this young boy's face. I
mean, he's about my daughter's age.

And the fact that he knew this and he
was what he, him and his friends, I

they just know how to survive if they
are to survive.

It affected me. Plus, he was from my
home in South Carolina. South Carolina.

I felt that too.

How has it affected your personal life?

Well, when I leave work and go home, I
need to

not just relax physically, but of course
everybody's got their own personal

problems. So you go home, you've got the
problems at home, and what has

been happening at the hospital affects
me so that...

Right now, in my own personal situation,
I have a lot of problems, so I'm

tense for a long time.

What kind of work did your mother do?

My mother did domestic work.

Your father?

My father did construction work.

Before that, we were farming in
Carolina, and we came up north, and

they did.

What effect did the fact that your
mother, having come from the farm,

and gone into domestic work. What did
you feel about that?

Well, I didn't like her being away from
me.

I wanted to have a mommy at home. You
know, I got all caught up in, we got up

here in those ads at Camel Soup and they
say when a kid come home from school

and you have a soup and everything.

Well, I had a key around my neck. So
when I came home from school, I let

in, had my lunch, watched the clock,
don't dare be late.

all the neighbors on the block would
tell that you were late going back to

school and i missed my mommy i wanted my
mommy home with me because that's what

america was supposed to be right i
wanted that and um i didn't i didn't

very much i didn't like the fact too
that we had to clean our house after i

from school and after she came from work
cleaning somebody else's house and also

all i heard is like you asked me about
do i bring my work how my work affects

All I heard was my mother complaining.
She was tired.

She cleaned house all day, and then she
fucked with me. You didn't do so -and

-so -and -so, and I got to clean. I'm
sick of cleaning house. So cleaning

really affects me to this day. I hate to
clean house.

Tell me something. Did your mother have
other children to take care of, white

children to take care of? Yeah, a little
girl named Melinda. I couldn't stand

her. What did that do to you to see her?

Well, I didn't like it. I was jealous.

And I, of course, then I didn't know,
besides jealousy, I didn't know what it

was. I kind of resented her taking my
mama.

And I felt that, I guess you could say
in that sense, my mother was

a mammy, a northern mammy. And she
didn't have time to mother

me at home.

I think black children are just put on
to just take care of themselves, and

a shame. I mean, she's warm and sweet
and all that, but I just didn't like her

being a mother someplace else.

How do you feel about poetry?

Why would you ask me that?

Because I heard you read poetry, but no
one's looking.

I do. I write it and I read it.

I like poetry.

You know, I come from Carolina. We like
to talk a lot.

And I like words. And so sometimes on
the job, and that's rare when there's

much to do, I'll write it. But I'm
always thinking poetry.

And in my spare time, I write some
poetry.

What are the nicest or the worst things
or the most potent things that you

remember about the fall?

Picking cotton.

Picking cotton. Oh, I hated that.

But let me tell you what happened to me
one time. It's a little funny story.

lazy so i used to hear him talk about
being sunstroke so we

would have to oh i think i'm an only
child that's kind of unusual because

black families and all people in my
family have more than one children my

parents only had me so i grew up with my
cousins who were like my brothers and

sisters and we have to go every day to
the field and i hated it i kept hearing

about this sunstroke so one day i
decided and mid -dated, I would get

And I didn't know what it was. I'd never
seen it.

So when we came home at noon, we called
it dinner. We ate at 12 o 'clock.

I went in the back, and I got some
Watkins liniment, and I put it on my

and then I got some oxygen soap, and I
put it in my mouth.

And so then we were sitting on the porch
waiting to go back to the field.

I walked out, and I got under this
chinaberry tree.

So I started riding on the ground and
the phone, the oxygen soap was coming

my mouth.

So everybody said, what's wrong with
her? So I said, sunstroke, sunstroke.

But my cousin, I have one tongue -tied
cousin, and she was trying to tell me.

She saw me, you see.

She was trying to tell me I wasn't
sunstroke.

There was nothing wrong with me. My
grandmama, Sula, said, I'll bring her in

house. And she brought me in and she
took care of me. And so she told me that

wouldn't have to go to the field no more
because I wasn't strong enough, see.

So from that day, I never went out in
the field again.

And I used to stay home and help my
grandmama do a little cook.

And I liked that. I didn't mind. We
would go fishing and catch fish. And I'd

to the garden, help her, you know, cut
okra and cook. I didn't mind that. But I

couldn't stand that picking cotton. I
mean, I swear, if you ever look down,

cotton field row, they talk about a
hard, hard row. That's it.

A lonesome row. I hated it.

Well, I don't know.

I'm working on a new poem now. I mean,
not for publication or anything like

that. I'm just writing it out.

They say if you are a true believer,
that is, if the faith runs river deep

in your heart, it's possible in the
instant before the yucca -colored night

gives way to dawn to witness the cosmic
freeze frame.

For a magic moment, the Milky Way is a
crazy quilt, a blazing field of colors

running amok, dancing.

Did I say dancing?

They say that ebony rumbus, sepia
sambus, the dance of the colors is so

that even the lemon -colored sun is
dazzled, laid back, waits her turn.

And baby blue and apple green have no
shame jitterbugging on the clouds. And

when quiet gray shakes her magenta, even
the wind won't behave. I
