Harlem Hospital.

How long have you been there?

Almost eight years.

Eight years? Yeah.

That's a long time to be in one place.
Oh, yeah.

Uh, yeah, it is.

It must be an incredible
place in terms of energies,

other energies coming at you.

How does that affect your life?
Your response to people?

Well, it's not like a job that
although, basically...

I work other hours than 9-5.

It's not like a job where you
go to and you finish and...

You bring it home. Uh-huh.

Uh, you feel it. It's always
exciting in some kind of way.

Sometimes it's painful.

Does it...
Do you find you have situations

that actually change your life
or change your way of thinking?

Oh, yeah. The people do that sometimes.

I mean, what you see comin'
through the door sometimes.

The pain that they're in...

You know, some things are humorous.
I laugh a lot.

Do you... You...

You must come across a
lot of prophets there.

[Johnnie] I think so. Sometimes.

And you never know.
And I talk to everybody, see.

[man] Give me an example.
Someone you talk to.

Well, I talked to a boy last night
who I think was a young prophet.

Uh...

He... was in pain.

But he was talking about...
Not this particular thing, but

he just knew how to survive.

The way he knew how to survive, to me,

means that he's in pain all the
time, whether it's physical or not.

He was telling me that if you
come in with a bullet wound,

how you got to just...

put your hand and hold
that bullet there,

or bullets.

Mm-hmm.

And just keep your head
up and keep walkin'.

Walk on in the hospital.

And keep a positive attitude.

With his finger in the hole?

That's right. Yeah.

So... I looked in this young boy's face.

I mean, he's about my daughter's age.

And, uh...

The fact that he knew this and he was...

He's... Him and his friends...

I mean, they just know how to survive.

If they are to survive.

It affected me.

Plus he was from my home...
in South Carolina.

South Carolina? Yeah.

So I felt that too.

How... How has it affected
your personal life?

Well, when I leave work,

and go home...

I need to, not just relax physically,

but, of course everybody's got
their own personal problems.

So you go home,
you've got the problems of home.

And if... what has been happening at
the hospital affects me so that...

I mean, right now,
in my own personal situation,

I have a lot of problems.

So... I'm... tense for a long time.

[man] What did your mo...
What kind of work did your mother do?

My mother did domestic work.

Your father?
My father did construction work.

Before that,
we were farmin' in Carolina.

And we came up North and
that's what they did.

What effect did the
fact that your mother,

having come from the farm,
had gone into domestic work.

What effect did that have?

How did you feel about that?

Well, um, I didn't like
her being away from me.

I wanted to have a mommy at home.
You know,

I got all caught up in... We got
hearin' those ads. Campbell's Soup.

They'd say when a kid
come home from school

you have a soup and everything.

I had a key around my neck.
So when I came home from school,

I let myself in, had my
lunch, watched the clock.

Don't dare be late.

All our neighbors on
the block would tell

that you were late going back to school.

And I missed my mommy.
I wanted my mommy home with me,

'cause that's what's America was
supposed to be, right? Right.

I wanted that.

And, um, I didn't like it very much.

I didn't like the fact, too, that...

We had to clean our house
after I came from school,

and after she came from work
cleaning somebody else's house.

And so, all I heard...

You asked me about,
do I bring my work...

how my work affects me.

All I heard was my mother
complainin' she was tired.

She'd clean house all
day and then fuss at me.

"You didn't do so and so and so."

And I got to clean.
"I'm sick of cleanin' house."

Cleanin' house really
affects me to this day.

- I hate to clean house, you know?
- [man] Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Tell me something.

Did your mother have other
children to take care of?

- White children to take care of?
- Yeah. Little girl named Melinda.

I couldn't stand her.
What did that do to you?

To see her taking care of...

I didn't like it. I was jealous.

Um, and I of course then,

I didn't know, besides jealousy,
I didn't know what it was.

Just that I kind of
resented her takin' my mama.

And I felt that, uh...

I guess you could say, in that sense,

my mother was a mammy.

Mm-hmm. A northern mammy.

And she didn't have time
to mother me at home.

It was... I think black children

are just put onto just
take care of themselves.

And it's a shame. I mean,
she was warm and sweet and all that.

But I just didn't like her
being a mother someplace else.

How do you feel about poetry?

[chuckles] Oh.

Why would you ask me that?

'Cause I heard you read poetry
when no one's looking. I do.

I write it, and I read it.

Uh, I like poetry.

You know, comin' from Carolina,
we like to talk a lot.

And I like words.
And so, sometimes on the job,

and that's rare when
there's not much to do.

Uh, I'll write it.
But I'm always thinking of poetry.

And in my spare time,
I write some poetry.

What... What are the
nicest or the worst things,

or the most hokey things that
you remember about the farm?

Pickin' cotton. God, I hated that.
Pickin' cotton.

But let me tell you what happened
to me one time. It's a funny story.

I was lazy, see?

So I used to hear 'em talk
about being sunstroke.

So, we would have to...

Oh, I'm an only child.
That's kind of unusual.

Mm-hmm. Cause most black families,

and all people in my family
have more than one children.

My parents only had me.

So I grew up with my cousins who
were like my brothers and sisters.

And we would have to go every
day to the field. And I hated it.

So I kept hearing about this sunstroke.

So one day I decided at midday
that I would get sunstroke.

Now I didn't know what it was.
I'd never seen it.

So when we came home at noon,
we call it dinner. We ate at 12:00.

I went in the back and I
got some Watkins Liniment.

And I put it on my chest and I got some
octagon soap and I put it in my mouth.

And so then we were sittin' on the
porch waiting to go back to the field.

So I walked out and I got
under the Chinaberry tree.

I started writhing on the ground and the foam
of octagon soap was comin' out my mouth.

So everybody said,
"What's wrong with her?"

So I said, "Sunstroke! Sunstroke!"

So my cousin,
I have one tongue-tied cousin.

And she was trying to tell 'em...
She saw me, you see?

She was tryin' to tell
'em, that wasn't sunstroke.

There wasn't nothin' wrong with me.

My Grandmama Sula said,
"I'll bring her in the house."

She brought me in and took care of me.

And she told me I wouldn't
have to go to the field no more

because I wasn't strong enough.

So from that day,
I never went in the field again.

And I used to stay home and
help my Grandmama Sula cook.

And I liked that. I didn't mind.

We would go fishing and catch fish.

And I'd go to the garden and
help her cut okra and cook.

I didn't mind that. But I couldn't
stand that pickin' cotton.

I mean, I swear.

If you ever look down
a cotton field row...

That they talk about a hard road.
That's it.

It's a lonesome road. I hated it.

Lonesome road. Tell me somethin'.

You do have a half-brother named
Bubba, don't you?

Yes, he's my... People say half brother.

To me, he's my brother.
His name's Bubba.

Well, his name's not Bubba,
but we call him Bubba.

That's what I thought.

Recite a little...

[clicks tongue] Well, I don't know.

Um... I'm workin' on a new poem now.

I mean, not for publication
or anything like that.

I'm just writin' it out. Um...

[both chuckle]

They say if you are a true believer,

that is, if the faith runs
river deep in your heart,

it's possible in the instant before the
yucca-colored night gives way to dawn

to witness a cosmic freeze-frame.

For a magic moment,
the Milky Way is a crazy quilt,

a blazing field of colors,
running amok, dancing.

Did I say dancing? [chuckles]

[chuckles] They say that ebony
rumbas, sepia sambas.

The dance of the colors is so splendid,

that even the lemon-colored sun is
dazzled, laid back, waits her turn...

and baby blue and apple green have
no shame jitterbugging on the clouds.

And when quiet gray shakes her magenta,

Hmm. even the wind won't behave.

I haven't finished it yet.

So, if you are a true believer,

that is, if the faith runs
river deep in your heart,

it's possible in the eyelids
of one of these mornings,

that you too will witness
this exotic vision.

And the wind, heady with the perfume
of the colors, will tickle you.

Do not laugh, weep,

for, from dawn to dusk
anything can happen.

is that I have seen these braids.

Yeah. This new demeanor, shall we say?

What kind of "demeanor?"

Miss Thing got seashells in her hair.

And some gold wire wrapped round...

What's happening? Nothing much. [laughs]

I guess Charlie likes all this, right?

[Johnnie] Charles Brown? Yes.

He likes it. You remember him?

[indistinct] That's right. Ooh, hoo.

[Della] Girl's gettin'
beside herself here lately.

She's lookin' very reflective and
reminiscent. I don't know now.

[Johnnie] Listen, y'all.
Watch your mouth.

I don't have nothin' secret goin' on.

I know she can't keep nothin' from
us noways, you know what I mean?

You talkin' about this thing
that you bought this morning.

This blouse? Let me see.
I told you I need to find... Girl!

You talkin' bout "you need silk."

- Oh, yeah.
- You gotta catch the sales, honey.

I got it wrapped up so
nothin' will get on it.

Girl, I got this with a skirt.

New Jersey! I can't shop in New

trying to pay off all my plastic money.

I saw a pair of pants like this in a
deep, deep red in burgundy.

But I want to know before I leave New
York, what is it that you is into?

She thinks we gonna forget,
but she know I don't forget nothing.

I know, I know. 'Cause I got to know.

'Cause I got to have
something to go home with.

I mean, like, really. I can't understand
how... Don't take no gossip back home.

Child, you know I'm got to have some.
They gonna be asking about you.

I know you dressin' up and all. But I got
to have somethin' to tell these people.

- Well, I decided, last week...

I was very bored.

It was Friday.

Laverne had called me. I said, "No,
I don't want to go out to dinner."

I decided I was gonna go and check out
this east side singles scene, right?

I go into this club,
five floors, disco, bars.

All these men in their
suits and their ties.

[Della] Three-piece suits? Three-piece
suits. Shirts, the whole thing, right?

[grunts] And you know you never
have to buy anything to drink.

[Della] Mm-mm. No, they buy your drinks.

Some of the conversations
you got to go through.

Oh, child, it's like being
in elementary school!

I mean, I thought by now they'd
come up with some new things!

"Hey, sister." "What do you do?"

"Well, I work on Wall Street.
I'm in investments."

What do youdo? Ask him where you live.
That's the most important thing.

Where do you live?
Not only where do you live but...

what is the size of your bedroom?
Like Queen? Oh, stop!

Oh, get outta here.
Or a double bed or a twin bed?

Why don't you tell 'em
you sleep Japanese?

No, I told one guy that I was so poor

that right now I had just
spread a sheet on the floor.

And I was waiting for
my furniture to arrive.

And what did he say?

He said, "Oh, that was all right, baby."
He could deal with the rustic anytime.

Oh, my word. He wasn't offering you
nothing. He couldn't do a thing for you.

That's what the main problem is.
Half of 'em can't do nothin' for you.

And they say we uppity. We liberated.

You know what your mother used to say?

Your aunt, your mama, your grandmama,
you know what they all say?

Hey, if I can't do no
better than that... Hello!

With you? I can do bad by myself.

Hello. I heard that. Mm-hmm.

Maybe I'll run into one of those rich...
Arabs, foreigners.

You livin' in a fantasy world.

I mean, why not? I have to get somebody
to put together this silk, wool...

You got a point. How about that?

You're Egyptian. Egyptian cotton.
Get yourself a boat too.

Honey, get yourself a piece of cloth
and wrap it round you some kind of way.

Like I made this dress. You remember
the material I had? I really like this.

That's nice. The colors are so
beautiful. I really liked that.

Didn't you get that when you
went over a couple years ago?

We was wearin' gailies and stuff.

Yes, that was real black. Mmm.

[woman with cigarette] That's

The braids are very becoming. Did you get
that done here or when you went away?

us what's happening.

Before it's over, if we have to sit
out here all day, I'm gonna get it.

- Honey, they done built a new hospital.

They want me to come down
there and be a supervisor.

Really? A what? They need me.

I mean like you...

I told you I put in for this
new bid right at CBS. Mm-hmm.

What? I'm not gonna be
this receptionist forever.

Well, honey, you need to...
I got on this casting thing.

Uh-huh. Now what exactly do you do?

Oh, well I answer the
phone, and I cross my legs.

And I smile a lot.
Was she a receptionist she said?

My mother told me this lady
who used to work for her...

So the lady thought she was cute, right?

So she said,
"I'm doing office work now."

Well, guess what? [giggles]

She meant she was now cleaning offices.

She was cleaning an office building!

I'm still going down there.

I'm gonna supervise them children.
'Cause they needs guidance.

And they need me down there,

cause y'all, a hospital is
nothin' but a Peyton Place.

Girl, they might close the hospital.
I used to say...

down there, if I had to go to hospital...

counties can get there.

all-day church meetings.

and sweet potato pie.

Of course,

eatin' as one of my hobbies.

down there as she does up here.

cousin in Philadelphia? What?

Well, actually it happened to my
cousin's neighbor's granddaughter.

So, she sells tickets.
They're called the daily number.

I mean, it's legal.

So she sells tickets. And she's a

Anyway, a man came and wanted to buy 20
dollars' worth of tickets. They're a dollar.

So she suggested that he
buy 20 different tickets.

Because she said, "If you win, sir,
you will pay all this in taxes."

And don't you know what happened?
What happened?

He won.

And he came back,
and so it was 20 different tickets.

And he was so appreciative,
he gave her $500.

[Johnnie] So...

I mean, what difference would it make?
