We can never escape our past.
What came before shapes the present
and defines where we're headed.
Even though digital tech now makes photography easy for anyone,
the traditional method of shooting, developing,
and printing on your own is an authentic
and genuine skill worth mastering.
And then we hang it to dry.
This is the final product.
Do you understand?
Don't mess up the order.
- Okay? - Got it.
Mastering those skills elevates our photography.
Photography is more than just capturing moments,
objects, images, or landscapes
and then posting them on social media.
A photo needs to have soul,
it's a meaningful piece of art.
- Understood? - Yes.
Take that as an example.
Which means all of us, you and I,
are the artists.
One, two, three.
Yay!
Looks great.
It better be.
It's a masterpiece.
Thanks, everyone.
Cheers!
Once I start drinking, I just want to...
Get laid?
Classic.
You idiot.
You should get married like I did.
Even now, I find it hard to believe you're married.
That's why you shouldn't come inside.
- Be like Darwin for once. - Me?
What do you mean?
Ignore them. They're drunk.
But I'm getting curious.
Listen, Pia.
Don't worry, Darwin nowadays is a total green flag.
Wait a minute.
Does that mean he was a red flag?
People are wasted, stop instigating.
- So it's true? - You know what.
- Hey, hey. - Darwin used to be the campus heartthrob.
Girls of all kinds, normal to crazy, were all over him.
I'm gonna smack you.
Remember when we helped you? Otherwise she would've lost it.
Who lost it?
Those two. They're too drunk.
He's gone mad.
Did marrying me make Tio lose it?
- No way. - In fact, we're proud of him.
He's always been the one to take the lead.
- Take the lead! - Cheers!
For Tio and his baby!
I want to hear more about the girl who lost it.
Who?
The one your friends mentioned.
Why bring her up?
I'm just wondering how she compares to me.
Nope. I knew it would lead to this.
So she and I are different? Am I not enough?
- How? - I'm not...
...crazy enough about you?
- Babe, it hurts! - Am I not enough?
- I'm not obsessed enough? - Babe!
Is she dead?
Darwin, did I just kill her?
It's too late. We have to go now.
- No way. - Nobody's watching!
I have to check on her!
Just leave it.
- She needs a hospital. - Things will get messy!
- Go! Trust me. - I'm driving! I'm the one at fault!
- Darwin, I can't... - Leave it.
Fine, I'll drive.
No! I'll do it.
Let's get out of here. Hurry.
I entrusted Mr. Darwin
to photograph this historic auditorium
before its renovation
not because of his late father, Mr. Ismet Aksara,
who helped build it,
but because he's one of Ekanusa's admirable alumni.
His works have gained recognition for being artistic, classy,
and undeniably high-end.
Sir.
Please.
Thank you, Mr. Yunus.
Speaking of Ekanusa,
to me, Ekanusa wasn't just a place to study communication.
It's more than that.
Here, I learned to be a socially functional individual
who contributes to society.
Here at our beloved alma mater,
I also learned to love many things.
Photography,
the world of art,
friendship...
and love itself.
Smile, everyone.
Ma'am on the edge, could you move closer?
Thank you.
One moment.
Did you take the shot, Darwin? We can't hold our smiles for too long.
In a second, Mr. Yunus.
Darwin.
Coming.
You startled me.
I wasn't expecting you.
How can you act so normal?
What do you mean?
Like this.
You just carried on working like nothing happened.
I can't even sleep properly.
I can't focus in class either.
All I can think about is the accident the other day.
Pia.
I looked into it, and there's nothing reported
about that accident.
So, don't worry.
You don't understand, Darwin.
I was the one who hit someone, not you.
Your camera is fine.
Maybe the lens is scratched? Take a look.
When I take pictures,
there's this foggy, shadowy look.
It's good.
- You sure? - Yeah, it's fine.
What's wrong with my picture?
It looks foggy.
You've caught a ghost on camera.
Are you serious?
Geez.
Superstitious people say that.
I think it's just distortion, caused by lighting.
Besides, for jobs, you should use a digital camera.
It's risk-free, unlike an analog film camera.
It wasn't even a job. It's for a charity project
to raise funds for renovating our campus auditorium.
Gosh.
They're gonna wipe my sinful past.
That was the safest place to get laid.
It was a den of sin.
What do you mean?
You didn't know?
- Everyone used to get laid there. - Holy crap.
It's cheaper than a hotel. You just needed a mat!
That's enough.
I'm leaving. You're messing with me.
Thanks anyways.
Gosh.
Don't run into a ghost.
No...
Darwin!
Darwin, open the door!
Darwin!
Darwin!
Darwin!
Hey.
You had a nightmare?
Your water.
Here, have a drink.
You shouldn't nap here.
Where have you been?
Roy's place.
Guess what he said.
He really is a jerk.
He said I captured a ghost.
You've gotta be kidding me.
Darwin, we need to go back there.
I can't stand this.
Pia, things have calmed down.
Let's not talk about that anymore, okay?
Still, we should at least go back once
to make sure no one was hurt.
I can't stop worrying.
Just promise that once we see there's nothing,
we stop thinking or talking about it.
- Thanks, Mister. - You're welcome.
Well, Reza?
Just look into it.
Right. Okay, thanks.
Careful, Babe.
How much for the drink?
25,000 per cup.
I'll take one matcha and one hazelnut.
Okay.
- Mister. - Yes?
What happened to this billboard?
Seems like someone crashed into it.
How come?
The driver was probably drunk.
Did anyone get hurt?
I don't think so, just this billboard.
Luckily, I'm only here during the day.
Otherwise, I could've got hurt.
Don't say that.
- How much for two? - 50,000.
- Thank you. - You're welcome.
Yeah, Reza?
You checked everything?
Glad to hear that.
Got it.
Okay. Thanks, Reza. Bye.
What did he say?
Reza just told me...
he checked through his police contacts
and he confirmed there's no accident report around here.
He even asked local police, it's all good.
No, I clearly remember we crashed into that woman.
Reza looked into it.
Everything's fine.
Trust me.
Let's leave. We can't raise suspicion.
THERMAL IMAGING AND ASTRAL ENERGY
Compare photos one and two.
Which one is real and which is edited?
First picture? Okay.
Second picture?
All of you are wrong.
Both photos are real.
These shots were captured using a thermal camera
that can pick up astral energy.
The white light around here
indicates an astral presence.
And the second picture?
The reason I say this is real
is because it was taken using a polaroid camera.
Insert the film,
press the button, and the photo comes out.
So any kind of editing is impossible.
Pia.
You're back early.
It's my phone. I'll go get it.
Hello?
Darwin, I think we can ask Mr. Sentot about that picture.
I just finished his class,
he might have some insights for us.
Hold on, Pia. I'll call you back.
There's a common theory
among paranormal photo enthusiasts
that these beings are intentionally captured by cameras.
Intentionally?
These beings appear to send messages
to the people photographing them.
It all started with this.
This is a picture of my wife and daughter taken eight years ago.
I took it with a standard DSLR
at my late mother's house.
It's up to you to believe me or not,
but this picture shows my late mother's apparition.
I searched for the meaning
behind her appearance here,
and almost all psychics said that she wanted to send a message.
What was the message?
That she missed me.
I'm an only child, you see.
That's when I developed an interest
in studying this type of photos.
It could be a father, mother,
friend, loved one,
or someone who was wronged.
How can you be so sure they were not fooling you
or just making up stories?
- About these pictures? - Yeah.
These are polaroid photos, Darwin.
They can't be edited.
But how do we know what the apparition in the pictures wants?
The meaning can be found
within the picture itself.
- Thanks, Darwin. - You're welcome, Ms. Erlita.
I'll selecting the best ones and send the photos.
- Thank you. - Thanks.
This way, ma'am.
- Tio. - Yes?
Get the other studio ready. I'll be here.
- Got it. - Yep.
- Change the background. - Yes.
Are you kidding me?
Tio!
Martha!
Who's there?
The lights went out. Is the fuse out?
Stop messing around, I'm working!
Goddamn cameras.
Damn it.
Who's there?
Fix the lights!
A malfunction?
Go ahead.
Could you step down?
Step back on.
Your X-ray results look normal.
You don't need to worry.
Perhaps the accident you mentioned
caused a muscle sprain.
Sometimes it hurts a lot,
it spreads to my neck and shoulders.
Let's try taking some medicine first.
I'll write you a prescription
and recommend you for physiotherapy.
Okay. Thanks, doc.
During mating season,
male grasshoppers can smell females from up to 100 meters.
The male cautiously approaches,
bringing himself near the female's abdomen
to begin mating.
The female's response is shocking.
The female turns predator,
gradually eating the male's head during mating,
eventually killing him.
Tio?
What's wrong?
I'm so dead.
What?
The photos, Darwin.
Give me those photos!
What photos? Are you drunk?
You know what I mean!
Where did you hide them?
I don't understand. What are you saying?
It's that damned woman!
Are you having an affair?
Seriously?
I don't get what you're saying at all.
Just calm down, okay?
I'm calling your wife.
Were you two fighting?
The meaning can be found
within the picture itself.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2019 LILIES SURYANI
Pick up.
Where's Abi now?
Damn it. Where are they?
FOUNDER OF EKANUSA CAMPUS PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
Tio.
Siska.
Tio?
Siska!
Siska!
Crap.
You startled me.
Tio!
Tio!
Crap.
Why do we have to meet up here?
What's wrong?
What's wrong?
Darwin.
They're gone.
Who's gone?
Look at this.
Read it.
Tio, Abi, Reza.
They're all dead.
CRASH ON HIGHWAY
This can't be real.
Does this have anything to do with the woman I ran over?
What do you mean?
Look. Who is this?
Who?
Where did you get this?
She's the shadowy figure in the pictures, right?
With Darwin, the photos turn out great.
FIVE YEARS AGO
Not blurry, right?
I bet he's shot a lot of nude models.
I haven't done a male model.
He'll do it.
Shall we?
Tio, don't start.
- Start what? - You did it on purpose.
- I didn't! - Stop lying, man.
You're quick to flirt with pretty girls.
It was an accident.
Don't be shy.
- No. - Yes.
It's yours.
You dropped it.
Thank you so much.
I've been looking for this.
Call me Darwin.
I'm Darwin.
- I'm-- - Lilies.
Yes.
It's written there.
Lilies Suryani.
Did you... take this picture?
It's beautiful.
You danced beautifully too.
I'm serious.
Been into dancing for long?
Yes, since I was a kid.
Makes sense.
I'm with the photography club.
Join us if you're interested.
We're recruiting new members.
But it's okay if you want to stay in the dance club.
You don't need to quit.
I'll teach you photography. You teach me to dance tomorrow.
I'll hold you to it.
This part adjusts the focus.
When you take a photo,
and it looks blurry, tweak this to fix it.
Let me try it.
One, two,
three!
Why are you looking? There's nothing to see.
It's a habit.
Let's check the results together.
Come on. Stop it.
- Darwin! - Catch me if you can.
I'll be late for practice!
I have to go to practice.
Now you've done it. It's stuck.
Hop on.
I'm the one who has to do it.
Stay steady.
- Ready? - Yeah.
- Here goes. - You got it?
- Got it? - Hold on.
Wait, let me take a look at this.
I miss this camera.
I used to have one but I lost it in a taxi.
The driver must've taken it.
How do I do this?
It's starting!
Another pose.
The last one.
Take good care of it, don't lose it again.
As you do with me.
Take care of me, don't let me go.
Wait!
Are you going out with that? You don't look good. Change it.
It's just a gathering...
No, it's ugly. Take it off.
- Try this on. - Wearing a blazer is too much.
There.
It's not a formal event, Lilies.
You should still look sharp.
See?
You sure? This is...
It looks great. Now go.
There you go.
- I'm off. - Okay.
I didn't want my friends to find out about me and Lilies.
She was so in love with me.
But did you love her?
You can take this as reference for your project.
But it's a bit advanced, try looking at the angles.
Lilies, I'm in a discussion...
Hold on.
Come here.
- I was discussing... - Let me go!
- I was-- - Who were you talking to?
- She's my student-- - Liar!
Don't lie to me.
- Darwin, wait. Please. - That's enough.
What do you want? I explained everything!
- That girl-- - Listen to me!
I told you, I can't do this anymore.
We're done.
Lilies!
What were you thinking?
Stop.
Put it down.
- I... - Don't be reckless.
...love you so much.
Don't leave me, Darwin.
Drop the knife.
You're nuts!
Darwin!
Darwin!
Darwin!
Not long after she moved to Bandung,
we heard she had fallen seriously ill.
And soon after that, she died.
What if the one I hit was Lilies' ghost?
Maybe she's appearing to send a message.
What if it's not just a message,
but a warning?
After Abi,
Reza...
Tio...
I might be the next to die.
Don't say that, Darwin.
If I could turn back time,
I would make things right with Lilies.
But in my opinion,
it's better if you apologize in person.
How?
I'll go to campus tomorrow
and ask for her address.
After that, we'll find out what really happened.
You should get some rest.
Thanks, babe.
Mr. Yunus.
Someone from admin said you were here,
so I came over.
I'm Pia.
Darwin's girlfriend?
- Right. - How can I help you?
I'm trying to get data about students who got scholarships,
but I was told I need your permission. Is that okay?
Of course. Who are you looking for?
This person.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2019
- Where did you get this picture? - From the auditorium. Why?
She's been expelled from here.
And her scholarship has been revoked.
- Why? - I have a meeting to attend.
- People are waiting... - Wait, sir.
Can I still have her address?
Her records have been wiped.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR 2019 LILIES SURYANI
Bumi Sangkuriang Dormitory...
BUMI SANGKURIANG DORMITORY
BUMI SANGKURIANG DORMITORY
Darwin.
I've got Lilies' address.
Let's get going.
Get ready.
Why are you driving so fast?
Darwin.
Darwin.
What's wrong?
Darwin.
You're not in shape to drive, I'll do it.
I'll take over.
Darwin.
How come Mr. Yunus seemed so afraid to give me Lilies' information?
Beats me.
Apparently, Lilies was expelled
after her scholarship was revoked.
Do you know anything about that?
No idea.
All I know is...
Lilies moved to Bandung to transfer to another university.
I'll be in the shower.
Darwin.
Darwin.
Darwin.
Darwin!
Darwin!
Pia.
I'm out of cigarettes, I'm heading out to get some.
Ma'am, excuse me.
Ma'am, do you happen to know where Lilies' house is?
Lilies?
Lilies... Suryani.
Go straight, then turn right at the intersection.
Go straight and turn right at the intersection?
Right.
- Can a car get through? - Yeah.
- Thanks, ma'am. - You're welcome. Have a nice day.
Stop staring, dear.
Her house is pretty far.
Is that her house?
Should we get off?
It's a dead end anyway.
- Careful. - Got it.
Excuse me.
Excuse me.
What is it?
Who's there?
Is this where Lilies lives?
Who are you guys?
We're her college friends from Jakarta.
Her friends?
Yes.
She didn't say her friends were coming.
She's in her room,
she hasn't been feeling well since yesterday.
But it's okay.
Come in. I'll get you some drinks.
Please, come in. Sit inside.
Darwin.
What is that? She has a lot of those.
Camphor.
Hey.
Darwin, what are you doing?
You can't just walk in.
Lilies.
Lilies.
Lilies.
We truly apologize, ma'am.
We didn't mean to intrude.
We were just--
Why didn't you bury the body?
It's painful.
Losing my only child is painful.
I just want her to be by my side, like old times.
Don't you feel sorry for Lilies?
Her soul can't rest.
To tell you the truth,
we're here because we felt Lilies' spirit is haunting us.
It seems like
the apparition of Lilies in those photos
came to us to deliver a message.
Maybe this was her message.
Perhaps her spirit led us to you...
so you can give her a proper burial.
So she can rest peacefully.
Lilies.
If you let us,
we can help arrange a proper burial for her.
Okay?
LILIES SURYANI OCTOBER 7TH, 1998 - NOVEMBER 13TH, 2020
After graduating in Jakarta five years ago...
Graduating?
Yeah.
She came home.
But then she often isolated herself in her room.
Don't you dare take her away, Harun.
She's not dead.
She's still alive.
If you try to take her away,
I'd rather die...
- Don't do it. - I'd rather be dead!
Don't do it. But please,
if you're not gonna bury her,
could you move the body to a room in the back?
The neighbors and I are ready to help.
Lilies.
I'm sorry for everything I did to you.
I hope you find peace.
Our business here is done.
Lilies is at peace.
Darwin, let's go. Everything's all set.
Wait.
- Let's go. - Yep.
After Kalimantan, it's Sumatra.
Stand on the mark.
East Nusa Tenggara.
Bali.
Give me a new pose.
- This is the last one. - Okay.
Darwin?
What's wrong?
Is this the right costume? It's...
Yes.
Kalimantan, Sumatra, East Nusa Tenggara, Bali,
and Sundanese.
You can change the costume if you want,
but we'll have to redo everything.
Right.
Is this okay?
Yeah, it's fine.
Darwin.
Darwin.
Pia!
Pia!
Thank goodness you're here.
I love you so much.
No, Lilies!
No!
I've already apologized to you.
No! No!
You bet.
Why is she staring at me?
You? Not you, him.
- Look. - She's staring at you.
- Why so serious? - What's wrong?
- What is it? - I'll tell you later.
- What the hell? - Seriously?
- That's messed up. - Seriously?
What happened? Tell us.
Darwin, chill.
So that's his type?
He's going for it.
- I think they hooked up. - Nah, I think he's telling her off.
That's messed up.
- Isn't she the one you made fun of? - Yeah.
- He's coming back. - He's back.
- What did you do? - You're messed up.
- Messed up. - You're brave, Win.
- Are you serious? - She already left.
- She's still there. - There she is.
She's hooked.
That's crazy.
Maybe she's a bit nuts.
What did you do to her?
She's crazy. She's terrorizing me.
We know, Win.
What are you doing? Shoo!
What the hell? She's crazy.
I'M NERVOUS ABOUT PERFORMING. I NEED YOU. JUST THIS ONCE, PLEASE.
Who are you waiting for, honey?
Let me go.
I heard someone's nervous about performing.
Should we help you relax?
- Cut it out. - Here.
Lilies, we can help you loosen up.
- Let's chat for a bit. - So you can relax.
- Don't you want to relax? - Listen...
- Hey. - Hey.
- Hey, Lilies! - Lilies.
Lilies.
Were you looking for this?
Boo.
Where are you going?
Lilies.
Where are you going?
- Hey. - Lilies.
Hey, hey!
Hey, Lilies.
Don't be afraid.
We're just here to say...
you need to stop terrorizing Darwin!
- Motherfucker! - Come here!
Hold her down!
You bitch!
Fuck!
Stay still.
You crazy bitch.
Take it off!
No!
Hold her still!
You bitch!
You're done for.
Darwin! Over here!
Darwin!
Darwin, don't go. Come here.
You're all insane!
- We're doing this for you. - Darwin!
Darwin, help me!
Take a picture.
- What? - For evidence.
To keep her quiet.
If we go down, you and your father will too!
You want that?
Win, take the picture! Hurry!
Tio!
NOTICE OF EXPULSION
Have a look.
I know you're still here.
I keep telling you I'm sorry.
I said I regret what I did.
Come out now.
Come out.
Lilies!
Come out, Lilies!
Lilies!
Where are you?
Where are you? Come out!
Fuck!
Where are you?
If you want me dead like my friends, come out!
Kill me now!
Fuck!
PHOTO EXHIBITION EKANUSA UNIVERSITY
On August 17th, 2020,
Lilies Suryani, a scholarship holder...
VICTIM OF ASSAULT AND RAPE ON CAMPUS
...a Jaipong dancer set to perform at the Independence Day celebrations,
was assaulted and raped by three Ekanusa students,
Reza, Abi, and Tio.
The incident was captured by the photographer Darwin Aksara.
Sexual violence that occurred in universities throughout 2021-2024
included 82 cases that were reported
to the National Commission on Violence Against Women.
This represents only the tip of the iceberg,
as many of these cases involved lecturers
or peers in higher positions of power,
causing many victims to remain silent.
