I live for every moment I can spend with my horse.

At the new house, I'm only 10 minutes away if I walk.

But on the bike it's faster.

At first, I didn't know the difference

between a halter and a bridle.

A halter is for the person on the ground handling a horse.

It goes over the horse's ears and around the nose.

It's made of leather, with straps that buckle to fit.

A bridle is for a rider.

It has a mouthpiece that allows you to control the animal.

There's lots of debate about whether a bridle

should have a bit or not.

But, Shadrach was trained with a bridle that had a bit,

so that's what I use.

The bit is the piece of metal

that goes into the horse's mouth.

I stand on the left side of Shadrach,

facing forward, but knowing that if he shakes his head,

I need to move back out of the way, fast.

I slip the reins of the bridle up onto his neck

and then I carefully remove his halter.

PawPaw said not to hurry, but also not take forever.

He said it's all about having confidence!

I hold the bit with my left hand,

right in front of his nose.

Then, in one swift motion, or as swift as I can,

I put my thumb right into his mouth into the space

between his front and back teeth.

Then I slide the bit in,

and with my other hand, I lift the bridge up

so he can't spit out the bit,

which rests on top of his tongue.

Next, I take the crown of the bridle and with my left hand,

I slip the leather straps over his ears, one at a time.

The hard part's done.

I fasten the buckle of the nose band.

It needs to be secure, but not too tight.

The final thing is to buckle the throat latch.

PawPaw says, "You ride with the seat and your legs.

But that you really ride by understanding your horse".

I think it's similar with people.

If someone is uncomfortable around me,

it's hard for me to feel relaxed.

Oh, Gram's birthday is coming up.

What are we gonna get her?

I know what not to get her, more than what to get her.

What's on the no list?

Ah, let's see. No candles, no slippers.

No key chains, no coffee mugs,

no bathrobes, no bubble bath, no aprons.

And she says she's done with knickknacks.
