Ugh!
Hmm.

True confidence in the modern age isn't a switch you just flip. It's a constant
routine that reinforces your own value. The world we live in is not kind to
that. It's on us as women to present ourselves as a powerful being that we
We have created, you know, through social media.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Problems with the flowers, problems in the mainland.
All these conversations make me want to go mad.
And go wild.
To be wild.
And go wild.
For a while.
And go wild.
Whoa.
No.
You know, it seems to me that in this day and age, that if a person wasn't
anxious, that would actually be more strange than if they were.
But, those things shouldn't gain your productivity as a woman.
a good relationship demands so much time so much effort so
much energy and men have such few clear examples of healthy masculinity
Thank you.
Got it. Final answer. Oh, Joey's here to rush it along.
All right. Draw what you're thinking floor plan was. Oh, boy. I'm thinking
couch is going to be over here.
I do want two chairs.
I'm not sure if there's going to be a big enough area.
Hey, sorry.
Hi, buddy. Come here, Rocco.
He's cuter than his pictures.
Are you a dog person?
I don't know.
Well, he's a people dog.
Yeah, I can tell. He looks well trained.
Yeah.
I brought this.
Oh, you didn't have to do that.
I don't know. Isn't that what you're supposed to do?
Right. Well, thank you.
Yeah, I'm Amina.
I know.
I'm Alec.
Right. Yes, we both know.
Sorry, I felt like we needed a proper introduction, you know?
This is about what you're supposed to do.
Yeah.
There he is.
And you brought wine.
Yeah, it's red.
Y 'all like red?
Um, actually, we don't really drink any wine, so we're not picky.
Oh, shit. Very tweet of you, man. No problem, man.
It looks like a nice one, too. Are you trying to flex on us?
Babe, I actually don't... This is very embarrassing, but I actually don't think
that we own a wine opener.
A corkscrew? Of course we do.
Don't we?
So how are you feeling about watching Rocco while we're away?
Oh, I feel fine.
Yeah. He's really low maintenance for a small breed, but I am pretty nervous
about leaving him for the first time, so I'm glad that you got to meet him
first, at least.
Yeah, for sure. I'm happy to help.
And we were thinking about 50 a day.
Oh, you don't have to pay me.
I mean...
We'd like to. Yeah. No.
Seriously, it's not a big deal.
Okay, that's really nice of you, but no, we're definitely paying you.
I'm serious. Please don't pay me. That would be so weird.
We'd feel weird. Yeah.
Don't feel weird.
Are you sure? Don't pay me, yeah.
Yes, I'm sure.
Yeah.
Well, thank you.
That's really nice. I guess, yeah, that's an extra $150 we can...
Spend on a corkscrew.
Yeah, it would be an expensive corkscrew. Absolutely.
Rose gold.
Bluetooth speaker.
So where are y 'all going again?
Fredericksburg.
What's there?
That's where Enchanted Rock is.
What? No, where what is?
That's where Enchanted Rock.
You've never been.
Peter said that you've been in Texas your whole life and you've never been to
Enchanted Rock.
I've never even heard of it.
That is crazy, but it's beautiful and it's a huge... Rock.
It's a huge rock.
Yes, and it's... Is it enchanted?
You know, it's kind of hard to explain what makes it so great, but... In fact,
explaining it makes it sound very lame.
Okay, but that's just like all of nature. You can't just talk about it.
know, you have to see it and feel it.
More wine?
Oh, no, I'm good. I actually don't even think I like wine.
Yeah, well, neither do we, dumbass. You couldn't pick up some beer?
Be nice.
I'm just saying, he knows I don't drink wine.
Well, Nina might.
Yeah, I do, actually, and I will be having the rest if no one wants any,
I'm gonna wrap these up.
Eight years.
That's how long Peter and I have been together.
Yeah, that's crazy.
You knew that?
No, I didn't know the actual number.
I just knew it's been a long time.
You know, it's funny when you say a long time because I feel like that could
mean anything. I feel like it could mean three years or five years or eight
years. Eight hundred years.
Yeah.
Sorry, I like to...
hear myself talk when i get tipped to be so you're good you were
15 when peter and i first met yeah
yeah that's like ancient history how
did you guys first meet oh we met at one of those 11 11 parties one of those
what parties okay no one ever knows what we're talking about i always thought
that everyone did them but guess not um so every month
in the fall they would have this big party at the biggest house on the edge
west campus and it would be on like the 8th of august the 9th of september the
10th of october you get the idea and at the time so the time that was the number
so in this case 11 11.
everyone was just supposed to get naked and go crazy and start and sucking and
doing just The horny college shit.
Okay. And it was getting pretty close to 11 -11, and I still needed to find
someone, because you need to have someone.
It was 11 -09, 11 -10, and right on 11
-11, I feel a hand tap me on the shoulder, and sure enough, it was him.
What was me?
I'm just telling him how we met.
Oh, God.
Well, what made you tap her on the shoulder, Peter?
Well, why not her?
She was beautiful.
I'd seen her on campus before.
She was looking for somebody, and I needed someone too.
But anyway, we're here eight years later, so... Yeah, that's crazy.
I can't imagine being with one person for that long.
Well, it's not just one person.
Yeah, but, I mean, still, even with more than one person, that's a long time.
Eight years goes by quicker than you'd think.
Yeah.
Yeah. And here is to eight more. Cheers.
You guys have any advice?
About what?
Well, as someone who's exclusively failed at relationships thus far, it
great to get some advice from a successful, long -term couple like
Have you heard of Maria Mendes?
Here we go.
Mm -mm. No. Why?
She is an extraordinary woman. And if you ever have any questions about
relationships, you should ask her.
Is she about to walk out or something?
No. No.
No. She has this podcast that I listen to, like, religiously. And she just
recently came out with a novel, which is basically everything she talks about
but in print.
But, yeah.
She's great.
Um, Peter, you don't have any advice for a long -lasting relationship?
Don't get married.
Mm -hmm, that's true.
Y 'all don't want to get married?
No, no, just not in a rush.
What about you, Alex? Do you ever want to get married?
No, not again.
Not again?
Oh.
I didn't mean for that to be like a bomb drop on the conversation or something.
Wait, you were married?
Yeah, for a glorious six months.
No fucking way. When?
Like a year ago.
We met when we were 18, started dating, got married when we were 22.
And yeah,
I told you when we first met that I just got out of a big breakup.
Yeah, you didn't tell me it was a fucking divorce.
Yeah. Well, I was kind of embarrassed about it, I guess.
It didn't even feel like a real marriage, so it didn't really feel like
divorce either.
It was just, like, one long, impulsive decision, the kind that two people
mutually participate in, and things were just really messy when we ended it.
When I ended it.
But, yeah, it's in the past, and I don't really like to talk about it.
a lot so we can i i totally get that um why did you get married
um because i loved him
and i just kind of thought that's what you do when you love someone and i don't
know i didn't know any better i guess so why did it end what are you this
therapist um because i didn't love him anymore um
I guess I just got too comfortable or I got so comfortable that I got bored.
And yeah, I mean, it's just weird to spend four years with someone and then
realize that you'd never checked in with yourself about it the entire time.
You just sat there and took it.
And if you never actually think through it in your head, like think of your
relationship as a thing that you can touch.
and squeeze and fuck around with, then it's easy to get swept away in something
that you didn't even really fucking want in the first place.
But... I should have seen it coming, the Scorpio.
Alex, it was really wonderful to finally meet you.
Yeah. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Yeah, we know each other now, so that's great.
For sure.
oh my god
That's so weird.
That lighter is the same as your shoe.
Random as fuck.
It's pretty quiet.
It's better just around me here.
You always like to...
You're about to hit the day.
Thank you.
Yeah.
This next question comes from Nina. She is 26 and hails from Austin.
Dear Maria, me and my partner have been dating for almost eight years now and
have been open for about four.
It was a mutual decision to open up our relationship, but initially I was the
only one taking advantage of it.
I had a number of different experiences with different partners, men, women,
young, old.
Me and my partner started dating in college, and he was the first long -term
boyfriend. ever had. So being open has provided me a great opportunity to
discover lots about the world, and more importantly, myself.
But from the start, we both agreed it would be a short -term thing and not a
permanent lifestyle.
And so recently, I felt like I was growing out of our experience, like I'd
gotten everything I wanted.
But about six months ago, my boyfriend found a really intense and consistent
connection with a younger me.
He is also the first man he has ever felt comfortable exploring his
with. They are very compatible both physically and as friends.
And at first I was just happy to see him find that joy outside of our
relationship that I had been indulging in for so long.
But the truth is that the intensity of that connection has begun to scare me.
Sorry for going on.
All I wanted to ask was...
What is your opinion on closing the relationship when your partner might not
done with it himself?
I don't want to feel like I'm taking something away from him, especially
how long he was supportive of me exploring myself.
I guess I am just jealous of him and insecure about the time and energy he's
investing into somebody else while I'm in a place emotionally where I'm in
need of that kind of care.
Thanks, since always.
Love you lots.
Well, Nina, I love you lots, too.
And it seems like your boyfriend and the new boy he's seeing all...
Isn't that the core of it?
Too much love?
There are worse problems to have. I mean, firstly, I want you to reframe
problem so you can look at it, at this entire conflict, as an opportunity for
growth for all parties involved.
If you truly feel neglected, you need to be honest about them.
The longer you resist the impulse to talk, the harder it will be.
You need to prioritize your needs, as does your partner, because he is, of
course, your partner.
But if this new person is as significant a presence in your partner's life as
you say he is, then it might be time to accept that you have created a new kind
of relationship.
It might not be your standard open relationship anymore.
But in any kind of relationship, you must talk about things. Communication is
key. And the fact that you are choosing to talk to me about this instead of him
only affirms how urgent it is that you talk.
I wish you luck with this, Nina, and as always, my friends.
