- [Reporter] For all airports until one o'clock-

- [Reporter] It has now been about 11 hours

since the first attack on the Twin Trade Towers,

and the stunning sequence of events that followed.

It all happened so rapidly, and in plain view

that it somehow seemed surreal.

- [Reporter] And America's 5,000 airports, total shutdown.

An estimated 200,000 passengers stranded.

At O'Hare, the world's busiest,

a line of jets held on the runway for hours.

No open gates, but surprisingly few complaints.

Military planes-

- They're closing the tunnels.

- [Reporter] This morning, the last of the commercial-

- Forget the tunnels, close the borders.

Close the whole fuckin' country down.

- Why is that out, Sean?

- Just in case.

- In case what?

- In fucking case.

- [Reporter] Nationally doubled.

In Chicago, 800 miles from the attacks-

- Where are you gonna find 'em, Sean?

- They're everywhere.

- Look, it's been a long day.

A very long day.

You put that gun down, we're off duty.

- We're never off duty again.

(gun clicks)

- Not anymore.

- I put a semiautomatic

in the trunk of my car this morning.

- Don't fuckin' touch me.

- [Man] I need a drink.

Can I have a drink, please?

- Give him his fuckin' drink.

- No.

- All right, let's just take a moment here and calm down.

And you, let me see that permit

for that semiautomatic you got in the trunk of your car.

- [Man] Oh they have a permit to fly those planes, huh?

Now you know what I'm sayin'?

- Come on, man. - Where's your permit?

- It's at home! - It's at home?

- Yeah! - Give him a break.

- [Man] What do you mean, give him a break, look at him!

- [Reporter] And most importantly,

how people respond to this terrorist attack.

How we strike back militarily.

How we defend ourselves at home.

How we heal all the wounds of this day.

- [Reporter] Now this nation has turned, I mean,

it's turned upside down,

emotionally and perhaps imaginatively.

It's one of those moments you can't believe.

- [Man] That your captain's?

- What happened?

- Jump.

- What?

- A jumper.

- [Firefighter] Fell on him.

- What brought you here, son?

- This is the last place I drank.

Remember?

- I do.

Two Coronas and a tequila chaser.

- How'd you get here?

- I walked.

- That's 10 miles.

- You have to get back to your fire station, you see?

They need to account for you, honey.

(speaking foreign language)

And I need the regular driver.

(speaking foreign language)

Get him some water.

Come here.

(firefighter crying)

Get up, give him the chair.

Help me.

- Have a seat buddy, come on.

There we go.

(firefighter gulping)

(firefighter crying)

(sirens wailing)

- Mohammed, can you please take him to Ladder 36?

- Here.

- Thank you, Mohammed.

(tape player whirring)

(gentle harmonica music)

* Well I rode that *

* Ribbon highway *

* I saw above me *

* The endless skyway *

* I saw below me *

* The golden valley *

* Well, this land was made for you and me *

* I roamed and rambled *

* I followed my footsteps *

* Through the sparklin' sands of *

* Her diamond deserts *

* And all around me *

* A voice was calling *

* It said this land was made *

* For you and me *

* Well this land is your land *

* This land is my land *

* From California *

* To the New York island *

* From the redwood forests *

* To the Gulf Stream waters *

* Oh this land was made *

* For you and me *

* Now the sun came shining *

* And I was strolling *

* Oh the wheat fields waving *

* And the dust clouds rolling *

* And a voice was sounding *

* As the fog was lifting *

* Said this land was made *

* For you and me *

* This land is your land *

* This land is my land *

* From California *

* To the New York island *

* From the redwood forests *

* To the Gulf Stream waters *
