"you come to Neverland Ranch and I will heal you."

And then the Martin Bashir documentary

caused a worldwide commotion.

And then he finally said, "OK, if you love me,

"you can sleep on the bed."

I was like "Oh, man!" So, I finally slept on the bed.

You got to give the devil his due.

Martin Bashir did an incredible job.

Did that lead to the trial? You bet.

People just can't stop talking about the interview

with Michael Jackson,

a British documentary which aired in the US last night.

The man is 44 years old.

What in the hell is he doing sleeping in the bed

with kids who are not his, who are not related?

The Martin Bashir documentary drops,

and it's like the paedophile heard round the world.

For Michael Jackson, this was a nuclear bomb.

Why can't you share your bed?

The most loving thing to do is to share your bed with someone.

- You really think that? - Yeah.

The media painted Michael to be a child molester,

and they replayed that Bashir clip probably one billion times.

Why are you holding the hand of a 13-year-old kid?

You know if it was any one of us

and we were engaging in that kind of behaviour,

the cops would be all over us.

You would be cringing.

You would be cringing if your client got on national TV

and said words to the effect that he hosts

sleep-over parties for small boys.

The media certainly felt that Michael was fair game

to go after anything and everything. He hated it.

It's a frenzy.

My phone doesn't stop ringing with press people.

They want to talk.

You know, everybody wants to get a story going.

I even get a phone call from a tabloid offering me

an incredible amount of money just to talk dirty.

It's a PR meltdown.

There is tremendous pressure to get it all under control.

Michael, great entertainer, big celebrity status.

But he has a habit of tripping.

So, when this Bashir interview was released in the United States,

I get a call from my friend Frank, who's Michael Jackson's PR manager.

He's like, "Come out to LA

"and come out work on this damage control

"which is occurring right now."

Frank was very close to Michael, and I asked him,

you know, "Before I leave and I take this job,

"has Michael ever harmed a child?"

And he says, "Vin, you know me. I am the closest person to him."

And he said, "Never would happen."

So, I trusted Frank,

and I made a decision to take the job.

The best thing that we could do to defend Michael Jackson

was to film our own documentary to get a really good rebuttal

to who Michael was and that he's a good person.

Michael Jackson take two is going to air on Fox February 20th.

So then what do you think about Michael's version of this show

- that is going to come out, supposedly? - Positive spin.

I mean, it'll help him, it'll help him,

but he said what he said.

For about a week to a week and half,

I was trying to line up all the press around the documentary.

The participation of the boy in the documentary,

Gavin Arvizo, is a key element in how it's all going to work.

So the idea is we're going to capture an interview

with the Arvizo family, to show that there hadn't been improper contact

or conduct between Michael Jackson and Gavin.

It was essential to get this interview done

before the tabloids get a hold of this family.

My first task dealing with the Arvizo family

was to go pick up the mother, Janet Arvizo,

and bring her to Michael's videographer.

She was very upset.

She was complaining about the family,

and all their dreams are shattered now because of this.

We started pretty late in the evening,

and I talk the family through what we're going to be talking about,

basically just giving them a rundown that this is

a total fluff interview. But we want you to be honest.

Very quiet.

And everybody settles.

The family is supposedly totally on board,

but the mom won't start the interview

because I need signed model releases before we can do the interview.

But she didn't want to sign the model releases.

Why don't you sign a model release? Money.

All right? So, is she worried that she's not going to get

a piece of this if we sell this footage?

And then suddenly she's on the phone with lawyers.

At some point, someone tells Janet that it's OK for us to sign

the model releases and to film the interview.

Wait, wait. You know how these Bashir...

Hey, you know how Bashir zoomed in on him holding hands?

Do that, the same thing.

- Because, you know... - Because that's what a mother does with a son.

Or a father does with a son.

You know, and they try to make it out to be something wrong

and dirty. So you can have that.

When I first met Michael,

all I thought was he was a loving, kind, humble man.

And all he wanted to do was good.

As I'm doing the interview,

I really do feel like Gavin is very sincere.

He treats me like he's my father.

He gives Gavin advice, and...

Michael was exactly an answered prayer to my children and me.

Michael is there for us. There for all three of them.

Janet's just over the top.

I dislike her immediately.

Every door closed on us, and Michael said,

"All my doors are open.

"My home is your home, and your children,

"I am like their father."

And his interactions with my children were all innocent,

as a father interacts with his children.

Where she really loses my credibility

is just how she suddenly adopted this idea

that Michael is their real father.

Either this mom is completely in love

with Michael Jackson,

or she's driven by the world of Michael Jackson possibilities.

It disturbed me greatly when I saw them

and the innuendos he was making.

They took a beautiful relationships...

Relationship that he has with Gavin and spun it out of control.

We completed the interview,

but then the director of photography would not give me the footage.

This interview was obviously very important,

and he wanted Michael to pay him.

So, unfortunately, it never went into the Fox special.

It wasn't a good situation

with tabloids hovering around everybody at the time.

I had a strong feeling that I didn't trust Janet.

So, I am absolutely worried that this is the type of person

who might take money to say,

"Michael Jackson molested my kid."

Because there's a lot of money in that.

I have very few friends,

and the friends that are family to me

are because they have exhibited honesty, trustworthiness, love.

This video, I have never seen it.

I don't know how you guys got all of this.

And that is why we are very thankful

and appreciate that Michael calls us family

because he exhibits all that.

And he gives these boys much direction, because 12 and 13,

they need a whole bunch of it.

So, what you're seeing in Janet here,

she just truly wants this all to be true,

because this is just a godsend that there would be

a male influence in her children's life who was kind and caring.

She says things very dramatically,

but Janet really feels what she's saying.

I know her. That's what she feels.

You know, she had been going through a lot of stuff.

She was getting a divorce.

Gavin's father had been abusive to her and the kids.

So, at this point,

the idea that somebody this important would value her children

and parent them, that was meaningful to her.

Like, extraordinarily meaningful to her at the time.

She craved it.

After the Martin Bashir documentary aired,

I became concerned. I start calling, their numbers are disconnected.

I didn't know where she was.

Clearly, they were at the centre of a hurricane.

Anybody that had any kind of show would have wanted

to talk to this family.

Michael Jackson's team would have wanted to keep them contained.

OK, everybody, that two hour documentary

on Living with Michael Jackson is still making news.

Michael Jackson's image has taken a brutal beating

over the past few months, as you know.

We love Michael, we love Michael.

Among the madness of Bashir,

I get a phone call. "Hey, we're going to go to Gary, Indiana

"and visit Michael's childhood home."

Any kind of distraction.

Give them some new Michael Jackson stuff that was positive.

I would like to officially, on behalf of the men and the women

and the young people of the city of Gary,

welcome back home Mr Michael Jackson.

I am the biggest fan.

Well, probably not the biggest, because there's a lot of them here.

But I just love Michael Jackson.

Just his persona, he loves children.

In a good way he loves children.

He's a role model and I love him.

I originally thought we were going

because he wanted to visit his hometown,

but as it turns out,

it was to capture footage of Michael's humble beginnings,

because that was what the narrative was going to be.

It was like going to be the sickly sweet,

you know, you know... Here comes the king.

You know, like, wah, wah.

The management of Michael's image, that's the number one thing.

When you saw Michael's childhood home,

it was pretty rough.

You know, we are talking a two...

A small two-room home where ten or 11 people lived.

Michael grew up in abject poverty,

certainly in an age of discrimination,

opportunities for black men and black families especially

were very limited. But the one thing that really affected him

was his relationship with his father.

I think the broken relationship

between father and son was monumental.

There were really like two Michael Jacksons.

One needed love and validation,

the other needed attention and celebrity.

Everything is already geared up like a machine.

All this love.

It's all orchestrated to get support from the fans,

you know, because they would defend him no matter what.

The Gary Community School Corporation welcomes home

the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

The intrigue surrounding Michael Jackson continues tonight.

Would you let your son or daughter stay over at Neverland?

No, and I can't understand why these other boys' parents

allowed them to either.

I believe that Child Welfare Services should interview

every child that has been at Neverland

with Mr Jackson in his bedroom.

The tabloids are still foaming at the mouth.

And there was a sense that you want to keep Janet Arvizo,

who seems like a bit of a live wire, as far away from tabloids

and people with cheques as possible.

The Arvizo family is surrounded by handlers.

They're getting carted around by people inside the Jackson team,

and there is a controlled element of making sure they don't talk

to people that they shouldn't be talking to.

I would bring Janet and the kids back and forth

between the Neverland Ranch and LA.

I was told to spend my time with assisting Janet Arvizo

on whatever needed to get done.

I drove her all over the place.

The Arvizos are OK with it at first,

but slowly they start to, you know,

become resentful of being controlled.

"No, no, no, you don't go get your groceries, we'll do it with you."

And then I was told that Vinnie was going to help them move.

And I go, "Why? Do they want to move?"

"Well, we need a better location."

"We? Who's we?"

You know, so this is... This is curious language.

The Arvizo family were getting a lot of pressure from the press,

and there was a need for a place where they can stay,

where they can feel safe.

There was also a lot of talk about taking the family on a vacation.

Vinnie was running around getting passport photos,

and I thought that was probably a really smart idea as well.

And to make sure that this family is off in Mars,

as far away from the press and the tabloids as possible.

I'm being asked, "Wouldn't you like to go to Brazil?"

I'm like, "No."

Why is the family being coaxed to go to Brazil?

There is this plan that's going on.

But who's the guy behind the curtain in The Wizard of Oz?

Nothing's going to get done without Michael's approval.

He knows what's going on.

PHONE RINGS

One day, I get a frantic phone call from Janet,

who is being kept somewhere and whispering.

She was panicky.

She wants me to come to where she is and get her and the kids

and bring them back to my house.

She sounded desperate,

and I felt her panic for her own children.

She felt they were keeping her family at Neverland,

and that they were going to send them to Brazil

and make the family disappear.

And it's not like you can call the police and say,

"You know, I think there's a family being held against their will

"by Michael Jackson."

I don't know if that's a 911 call that's going to be put through.

I had extended to her, you know, call me in 24 hours,

and then I would have better resources in place.

And she never called.

When I became involved with Janet and her family,

they were allowed to go anywhere they wanted,

and I would take them wherever they wanted.

One day, she said, "Please bring my children down

"to their grandparents' house. My mother is sick."

I didn't think anything of it.

After that day, we hadn't heard from them.

They were done with us

and we were finished working with them and that was it.

They could leave any time, any... Any day.

When I finally heard from Janet, she told me about the danger

that she felt had been visited upon her family.

They had been kept at Neverland for three weeks or so.

And when Janet got her kids home,

they were not behaving normally.

Janet spoke to a lawyer.

He heard enough and saw these boys and thought,

I don't like the way this is sounding at all.

I told Michael, "Don't work with kids. Work with their parents.

"It's their parents that are supposed to be leading them.

"You are not the child's messiah."

In 2003, I was a senior prosecutor in the district attorney's office.

I was the supervisor of the vulnerable victims unit.

One morning, I got called in by the district attorney

and he handed me a two-page report.

And I'm looking at it, and it seems to be kind of

the ordinary preamble that you see in these investigations.

And I don't understand why I'm sitting there looking at this thing.

It's like dozens of other cases I've looked at.

And then I look at the top that has the name.

I never went to the name,

and the name was Michael Joe Jackson.

The Sheriff's office in Santa Barbara County had started

an investigation into allegations made by Gavin.

You just sit right there, buddy.

Gavin, can you tell us what your conversations...

What you guys talked about?

Gavin talking about alcohol use was a grooming situation.

In that interview, he exhibited to me the typical, if you will,

demeanour of somebody that's been abused.

You know, the shying away from the questions,

not wanting to talk about anything.

Keeping himself closed up during the interview.

He wanted to show you how to masturbate?

OK.

OK.

And did he do it for you?

Go ahead, Gavin, it's fine.

Did he put it on the outside?

Inside. And what did he do next?

OK.

Did he stop?

Having to publicly talk about sexual abuse is not an easy thing.

But he was courageous.

I had complete faith in everything Gavin was saying

and there was never a question in my mind as to the honesty

or accuracy of his statements, never.

But I knew we were going after an international superstar,

and that changes the equation.

That was the part that was the unknown for all of us.

There are surprising developments at the home of Michael Jackson.

Authorities are serving a secret search warrant

at his ranch near Santa Barbara, California.

Although there is no official word as to the nature of the warrant,

a number of news outlets are reporting that the search is tied

to allegations from a 12-year-old boy that he was molested by Jackson.

I was watching CNN,

and I saw all of these police entering the gates of Neverland.

Investigators have swarmed Jackson's Neverland ranch.

Target Neverland is under way.

I picked up the phone and I called Michael.

He was in Las Vegas, and I said, "Mr Jackson, are you OK?"

And he says, "Yeah, why?"

I said, "They're raiding Neverland." He says, "What?!"

I said, "Turn on CNN. You'll see it there.

"It's live. They're raiding Neverland."

Michael was really shocked,

and I had never seen anything like it.

I mean, the gate of Neverland is a good mile from the house,

and here is this stream of cars

and to me it's just abuse. It's harassment.

The media has set up camp out here.

We're told as many as 60 investigators are inside

at this point searching the ranch.

It was a very large operation.

I was a newly promoted detective,

I was a big Michael Jackson fan as a teenager.

When Michael Jackson would come out to perform,

you can imagine teenage girls screaming at the top of their lungs.

That's what we were doing.

When I was told about the allegations against Michael Jackson,

I was kind of surprised.

I was assigned to search the main residence.

How are you doing?

Sheriff's department. We have a search warrant.

To me, Michael Jackson was just another celebrity.

When you are dealing with celebrities,

you have accusations that are made,

and you have to take those accusations with a grain of salt.

You have to do your investigation.

- Whose office is this? - That's his office.

This is Michael's? OK.

Does he have anything else?

Michael Jackson's mansion was like no other house I've ever seen.

There was just so much stuff everywhere.

This is his area right in here.

So, this is the way we have to go right now.

Here's the code to get in. And that is...

My assignment was going to be going into Michael Jackson's bedroom.

Somebody said now he's moved upstairs rather than down here.

So, we'll also have to check.

Let's just secure everything right now.

Gavin had disclosed that there would be a briefcase

with pornographic magazines that were used by Michael

to provoke an arousal. Those items we refer to as grooming materials.

My job was to do the library.

First thing that caught my attention was it was all cluttered with boxes

of books on the floor.

The books I remember seizing were books

of children posing in their underwear.

In and of themselves are not child pornography.

They weren't posing together in sexual acts or anything like that.

But based on the investigations I'd done in the past,

to me, those were grooming books. You know, we'd found books like that

in other situations.

I thought they said search behind the jukebox.

We also found a pair of underwear briefs stuffed in a box.

They were either a very small adult or children's briefs.

We asked the housekeeper, "Where's the bedroom?"

That's when we were told no-one was permitted into his bedroom,

and nobody had a key for his bedroom.

We were able to make entry.

And when we walked in, it was a mess.

Papers, clothes covering the whole floor.

I found some pepperoni sausages that were just thrown in there.

I remember thinking, "Oh, my gosh, this is filthy."

Drawers weren't closed right.

You know, I'm sure everyone has a junk drawer.

There were a lot of junk drawers, if you would,

just stuff thrown all over.

In the area where the grand piano was, that's where I located

a briefcase. Opened it up, and there were some magazines

with the pornographic materials in them.

So that was a significant item,

because it supported what Gavin said.

You know in that moment, your whole point of the investigation

is to seek the truth.

When you talk about an innocent child who has been

taken advantage of, that is going to stir anger in anyone,

and...

..I think that Gavin was very courageous to be able

to come forward and say what happened.

First piece, item, seems like a piece of luggage.

Black leather type of material.

There were several items taken away as evidence.

- Bag. Sheriff's department. - OK. This is a jewellery box.

The calibre of this investigation really hit me,

of, oh, my, this is Michael Jackson.

There's definitely the feeling, even now,

of the intensity of the investigation.

So, it's just all surfacing that emotion again.

I wasn't expecting any emotion, to be honest with you.

Throughout the night, the search continued.

Patrol cars gliding past banks of reporters,

camera lights illuminating

the perimeter of the 3,000-acre estate.

When we heard about the raid on Neverland,

I'm in my childhood bedroom watching my black and white TV.

Let's just bring people up-to-date real quick.

The allegations were reportedly made by a 12-year-old cancer victim,

who said that Jackson gave him booze and pills at Neverland Ranch.

I just, I couldn't believe it was Gavin.

I just was devastated.

Tonight, Jackson is wanted by police.

California authorities announced an arrest warrant today

accusing Jackson, aged 45,

of multiple felony counts of child molestation.

CBS news has learned that Michael Jackson will turn himself in

to authorities in Santa Barbara today.

We briefly interrupt your programming.

Pop star Michael Jackson has surrendered to authorities

in Santa Barbara, California, after landing just a few moments ago

at the Santa Barabara airport.

He is now en route to the Santa Barbara jail

where he is about to be booked and processed.

The media circus, it is in full swing.

Reporters, cameras and helicopters have been chasing

the Jackson story around Southern California.

Michael Jackson under arrest.

It is the shot seen round the world.

Fingerprinted and photographed,

Michael Jackson like you've never seen him before.

His lawyer says Jackson is innocent and outraged.

I was shocked. Michael called me from the jail.

He says, "Can you believe this? I've done nothing wrong,

"and they have me all over the news."

Well, I said, "You know, you just be you and you do what you need to do.

"Don't be afraid to defend yourself."

He's come back specifically to confront these charges head on.

But I'm here to tell you today,

and Michael has given me the authority to say on his behalf,

these charges are categorically untrue. Thank you very much.

When I asked him point blank, "What is this about? Who are these people?

"Did you do this?"

And I saw just how strong,

and how the conviction

of his speaking to me,

I knew he was innocent. I knew it.

After he was processed, he snuck out the back door.

Through it all, the fading King of Pop still manages to wave

and flash the victory sign.

He went right from the jail to the airport.

The same plane he flew in on, he flew out on.

And now Fox has confirmed he is now back in Las Vegas.

At this point in time,

the Arvizo family were in an apartment in West LA.

They're very isolated over there,

the children are not going to school,

and so I began visiting.

Gavin was a different person.

He was very different, he was subdued,

and his way of letting me know

that what he was saying was true,

in his 14-year-old way, was to say,

"He got me drunk. I was drunk."

It seemed like how a 14-year-old would tell you this happened,

because I wasn't in my right mind

and I don't want you to think any less of me.

It was just devastating.

I did not believe in any way that Michael was even capable

of doing something like this.

I loved this family.

And by extension, loved him.

There had been allegations against him in his past

with a boy, Jordan Chandler, but they went away.

This isn't the first time Jackson has been accused

of child molestation.

Ten years ago, Jackson had been accused of molesting another child

but the case was settled out of court.

This time, because the Bashir documentary was fresh

in everybody's mind,

and what stood out was that boy.

Michael was being so affectionate with him.

You had to know that they were going to go all the way

with this one, that he's going to have to face the music in court.

All of this is going on, and I'm still like,

"OK, we got to give Michael the benefit of the doubt."

We just want to let Michael Jackson know that he has got friends here

in Santa Barbara.

I will never believe it. It's just impossible.

MJ would never hurt a child.

MJ is the kindest person in the world.

Michael Jackson, after his booking,

made an allegation to the press that he had been physically harmed

by somebody in the sheriff's department.

They manhandled me very roughly.

My shoulder is dislocated, literally.

It was a pure fabrication. Completely made up.

It's hurting me very badly. I'm in pain all the time.

This is, see this arm, this as far as I could reach it.

Same with this side over here.

Because of what happened at the police station?

Yeah, at the police station.

There was an investigation that was done,

and there was no evidence that there had been

any kind of harm that was done.

If you saw what they did to my arms...

It was very bad what they did.

I just remember thinking how absurd it was,

and I thought, who in the world would believe it?

But apparently there are. I mean, if you are a believer

of Michael Jackson, you'll believe what he says,

and doesn't matter how preposterous it is.

Before I would hurt a child, I would slit my wrists.

I would never hurt a child. This is totally false.

I was outraged.

I could never do something like that.

Michael's biggest attribute,

he could make you feel, like, so sorry for him.

What time is it?

Because I am hurting. I don't feel good.

He had this aura about him,

this, where I know when I've been in his presence,

I've felt like, oh, boy. You know, people should leave Michael alone.

You got a bunch of racists, I'm sorry, racist rednecks out there

who don't care about people.

We are a family.

My mother is very angry. We are all angry,

and we are going to put our soldiers and generals together

and prepare for war. That's what this is.

When Jermaine came out and called it a modern-day lynching,

in the moment, I thought, that's a stretch.

It was just to get attention.

It was just to try and galvanise, particularly, black America,

because when you mention lynching,

it's going to hit here,

and that's exactly what he wanted you to feel.

The latest bombshell in the Michael Jackson case centres around

Jackon's closest business associates

and whether of not they were behind a plot to abduct

and silence the accuser and his family.

ABC news has learned that prosecutors are focused on two men,

Vinny Amen and Frank Tyson, both long-time Jackson associates.

According to sources familiar with the case,

Amen and Tyson are being accused of using pressure tactics

to try and silence the alleged victim's family.

Kidnapping and hostage,

it is horrible, devastating.

It was wrong.

They went too far with that word.

And when it came out, the media said,

well, they can just file an arrest warrant right on the fly

in California. I mean, I was scared. I was 22 years old.

We included a conspiracy to commit kidnapping,

because in a conspiracy you can put in a lot of information

that paints a very compelling story.

The conspiracy to commit kidnapping was the efforts that Jackson

and his crew were making to remove the family

from the state of California and from the United States,

to take them down to Brazil where they could not be discovered

by police, by law enforcement or by the press.

When someone asks me how I feel, it couldn't get worse.

It just kept getting worse, worse, worse, worse, worse.

Steve Robel from the Santa Barbara's Sheriff's department,

he wanted to ask us questions. He left voicemails for us.

They were a little threatening.

They were basically like, jump on board or we may file

additional charges.

We were worried that maybe we would get searched.

Frank and I decided that we were going to bring to an attorney

any business items we had that were associated with Michael Jackson.

So, Frank handed me a bag.

Ends up, I take it back to my house

because there was something suspicious that I didn't like,

and when I opened up the bag, I found this magazine.

It was a naturalist magazine with a video ordering section

that had naked kids in it,

and there were circles around the videos, to be ordered.

That was just a devastating blow for me.

That was just a psychological hit that I never...

Now I see how this case is going, and all of a sudden, I see that,

and I came to a conclusion that everything has been lied to me.

Now this is the realm of sexual abuse of children.

Now it became very real to me,

and it became very real that Frank knew about what's going on

and he's not coming forward.

I know Frank was manipulated,

but being associated with Michael Jackson

who was victimising children,

it's like a wound that opens up,

and then when you open that wound it affects you psychologically.

So, I guess I have done a lot of work on it

to heal that wound,

but I think it will always affect me.

I've had years of healing,

but, you know, it still hurts.

If Michael was actually committing sex abuse against children,

he needs to be brought to justice.

This is just the start of what's likely to be

a very public and dirty war.

We're certainly poised for the trial of the century.

He is fighting these molestation charges.

Michael innocent, Michael's innocent.

I think Michael Jackson is fighting for his life right now.

Five counts of child molestation,

four counts of supplying a minor with alcohol,

one count of conspiracy for false imprisonment.

If he is guilty on all those charges, then he will face

a maximum of 18 years and eight months in prison.
