whole cup's going to be underwater.

This time of the season, we can't afford
to have anything slow us down.

At Paradise Hill, King of the Klondike
Tony Beetz is three -quarters of the way

through the short Yukon season.

I would really like to hit 3 ,000 ounces
this year.

We've got about six weeks or so left in
the season, so we've got to keep

watching rocks 24 -7.

My stromal is running great.

Hopefully we don't have any stops and
we'll be able to reach that goal.

With winter fast approaching, Tony
gathers the family to plan out the rest

the season.

Oh, not too bad. We've been drawing
quite a bit of pay out of the mega cut

there. Good. There's lots coming out of
that, huh? Oh, yeah. How many weeks do

you think you have left there?

You're not at your target yet. What are
you going to do about it?

Well, there's some other places we want
to have a peek at, do some drilling, see

what we can find.

There's got to be something around.

Okay. If you don't take a chance, you'll

Mike's run the trommel hard all season.

Now he's down to the last two acres of
the 18 -acre megacon, with just three

weeks' pay left to run.

Tony's on the hunt for new ground to get
her to his season goal.

I mean, the curious part about this part
of the hill is there's all kinds of

ditches and little ponds that people dug
up by hand in the olden days.

In order for them to do that kind of
work, there has to be a deposit

Say, there's going to have to follow
them.

If they know, what did they do? What did
they know that I don't know yet?

Since the 1890s, miners have left their
mark across Paradise Hill.

The remains of their mine work could
point to where the best gold was found.

Here's where we get all these fruit
trees.

and you see a little patch of birch
trees just in the middle of nowhere

that usually means that somebody had a
shaft there or somebody's been digging

there, because birch trees don't grow on
frozen ground.

There you go, you got a shaft there.

I don't know how deep he went.

Near one of the old -timers' mine
shafts, Tony finds what could be a vital

Where there's quartz, there's often

This one here, I can just see in the

carries on exploring.

I've been here 35 years, and I've never
been in these places.

See all these gully pairs?

You can clearly see that they monitored
a whole big trench through there.

In the 1890s, old -timers used powerful
hoses called monitors to blast pay dirt

off the hills.

and into simple wooden sluice runs.

Tony believes the parts of the hill that
they missed could still contain

thousands of ounces in gold.

You got the shaft here, we got the shaft
over there. You can clearly see the

monitors over there.

What the f*** were they looking for?

120 yards east of the 50 -foot shaft,
Tony has discovered the exposed edge of

old -timer's monitored cut.

The gold -rich pay should be much closer
to the surface here, if they left any

behind.

I think we're mapping.

And that should be that.

That'll look good to me. No leaks. I'm
happy.

I can take it and keep on digging.

If Tony can find enough of the light
-colored gravel that is rich in gold,

could be the ground to save his season.

Some of this definitely looks like pay
dirt.

See, that is white -channel gravel.

So, have a look at that.

We'll test the fail of this.

And I'll bet you you're going to get
gold out of it.

Now, Tony needs to know how far the
pastry continues into the hill.

The thing is, what is behind this? What
is underneath that nice grout?

At Indian River, 26 -year -old Parker
Schnabel is racing to bank enough gold

buy new ground and expand his mining
empire.

Yeah, buddy!

After four years, Parker has finally
finished mining Tony Beat's ground, the

last cut.

Now he's firing up Big Red in the
airstrip cut, just 300 yards away from

Lucifer.

I really never would have thought that
Big Red would have gotten through that

much ground in a season.

Mitch and Brennan did a really good job
getting through it. We definitely made

money on that cut.

Together for the first time this season,
Lucifer and Big Red are running over 10

,000 yards of dirt per day.

They use 300 ,000 gallons of water.

every hour, which flows back into two
massive ponds.

I'm out here with Day -M and the
stripping crew is just trying to get

opened up.

Hopefully we shouldn't turn into too
many problems because we've got a lot of

dirt to move.

There is almost two months worth of pay
in the airstrip cut.

Parker is pushing his crew to mine it
out in half that time before winter

Coal foreman Mitch Blaschke is in charge
of making sure both plants keep

running.

Parker just decided that they wanted to
add a little bit more to our agenda for

the year, and that's certainly a tough
thing to do. We got into this cut very

late this season, and there's so much
groundwater. We've got ponds on one

the river on the other.

On the other hand, well, it seems to
have a lot of gold in it. The ground's

good. There's going to be a challenge,
and there's certainly one down here at

the Earth Strip.

It's been a lot of gray, rainy days, and
I mean, that makes you tired and

missing home a lot. I just hope
everybody can stay positive and we can

off what park is put in place.

Co -foreman Brennan Rouault is
responsible for managing the cuts.

It seems to look like a lot of water
coming into the cut here right in front

the feeder.

This is a lake here.

There's a drop.

I just see a whole big lake back there.
Water's through this back here too.

Looks like it's coming out of the berm
right over here.

Look at how bad it's bleeding there.

Water from Sucifer's tailings pond is
leaking through the quickly built berm.

There's so much pressure in that pond
pushing back this way.

This thing blows out and that whole
pond's going to come this way. The whole

cut's going to be underwater.

Holy.

Sucifer's pond holds two million gallons
of water.

The leaking berm could easily give way,
flooding Parker's only cut.

That isn't looking too good.

So why don't you try and reinforce this
thing? I'm going to go grab every pump

we've got, get them set up, you know,
get some ditches in here.

Yeah, let's get after it. Okay, buddy.

Mitch's plan?

Dig ditches to drain the excess water
into a sump.

Install a pump to empty the cut.

and use a D10 dozer to reinforce the
berm with coarse tailings.

Look at that. That's five feet back from
the bank.

Like, if I was to go in this bank slough
and tip me over, it could be the end of

that dozer. With Lucifer still running,
3 ,300 gallons of water are being added

to the unstable pond every minute.

The pressure is on rookie plant boss
Tyson Lee to dig over 500 feet of

It's definitely a fight trying to get
this water under control. Right now,

Brennan and I are madly scrambling
trying to get it under control to the

Well, finally to the point where I'm
starting to feel a little bit more

With the berm fixed, Mitch, Brennan, and
Tyson raced to meet Parker's goal,

know, we had a major late start, and

don't even get me started on the deep
cut, what a disaster that was.

With just over a month until the end of
the season, Rick Ness' 1 ,000 -ounce

season goal is finally within his grasp.

I've got a great team behind me this
year, and got to hope we don't hit any

major snags, and got to keep the
momentum up.

There's no lunch break, no coffee break.

You literally just put your head down
and get going to work every day.

This year's strategy for as far as
spending is just not spending.

You know, I don't have the money to
spend, so, you know, it's just keeping

simple.

That's going to be the key to getting
back on track, you know, after a year

last year.

We're getting what we need and what we
need only, and anything else is, you

know, we're going to have to do without.

flat, dude. It's toast. We're gonna have

to do something different.

Until the hose is fixed, Rick's plant is
shut down, losing him almost $2 ,000

So this lay flat obviously isn't holding
up, right? So what are we going to do

about it?

Eleven weeks ago, the lay flat burst,
shutting down the plant.

Working with junk, man.

Rick ordered a quick fix.

Fire it up, see what it looks like.

A $2 fix that'll get us through another
week, probably.

But now he's paying the price.

Yeah, I mean, that sucks.

I mean, the rigid pipe that we have is
10 -inch, and that lay flat's fixed.

I mean, we could put the lay flat
through it. I mean, that should keep the

right? We fuse the pipe and we put a

line from pump to plant.

But, you know, we don't have a fusion
machine.

And I can't afford to shut the wash
plant down for that long.

So I guess we just take some of that
hard pipe that we have and arm it away

with it and hope for the best.

nothing can burst it.

This year has been unseasonably wet.

We just had a nasty rainstorm all night,
out in the morning.

You know, we're just trying to keep this
cut dried out, and it seems like every

time you go check the pumps, the water
table just keeps coming up and up

At the end of the day, we're going to
have more downtime if we do stuff not

properly here, right?

This is going to pay off in the end.

Yeah, this time of year when the plant's

time, so we've got to get this done as
quick as we can.

The fusion machine heats the two ends of

I'm very happy with it.

At that rate, the ground would be even
richer than the mega -cut.

One week of mining here could earn Tony
nearly a million dollars.

Rick and the crew sit down to weigh
their gold.

Well, it's going to be a light week, I
can tell you that.

you think about what we dealt with,
right? I mean, we had to make some major

improvements to the plant.
