the punch because I think we're going to
be ready to move slucifer before they

are. I just care about having the
rigging before they come and get it.

Then we'll have no choice. We get to
move first.

Well, we got a big day then, both watch
plants, same time. We've never had to do

this before.

I mean, you guys got the 750, so you got
some horsepower down there for dragging

sluice first.

We got 480 is the only thing.

It's going to be a challenge for sure.

Son Mike is chewing through 350 yards of
pay dirt an hour. Yeah, James, how's it

My day is going great.

Another nice day of fluthing, which is
good, since the only thing fluthing

now is a trommel.

To cash in on high gold prices, Tony's
also been searching for other quick

scores on the hill.

So Mike is losing weight right now. It's
not quite enough for what we want to

do. We got a lot of hunker cuts. We got
100 ounces out of the piggy bank.

So we kind of have a plan. I always
wanted to check out the whole time of

sailing. And if there ever was a time,
then today the gold price is high, fuel

price is low.

So let's see what we can find out then.

Half a mile away from Mike's promo.

Tony spotted a pile of rocks and gravel
that he believes are tailings, left over

by old -timers, lying below the remains
of an old sluice run.

There's quite a bit of history on this
hill.

This hill is the first hill that had
mechanical mining in the Klondike. Oh,

yeah. They want to jump down in the
gully. She was there. Yeah. But I didn't

think you guys ever seen this one
before.

Now, did you recently get told? No.

I've been wondering for 35 years.

Oh, you see that? That wooden thing

That is the spruce box.

They did that 80 years ago because they
monitored that hill, and in those days

they had one wooden clues box. It was
probably a couple hundred feet long, and

they cleaned that clues box up once a
year in those days.

They quit in the end of the 50s. They
probably started around when the gold

happened. Probably.

The remains of the old mine working date
from the 1940s.

Old -timers used hoses to wash valuable
pay dirt from the hillside into the

sluice rust.

Their basic technology only caught half
the gold. But the ground was so rich,

they still pulled in thousands of
ounces.

Now, Tony wants to find out what they
left behind in their discarded tailings

pile.

It would be nice to get an excavator
there because nobody had done that

And see what we've got. Yeah.

Today, it doesn't take much gold to make
a living. No, not at the current

prices. So I think it'd be worth a
venture. What do you guys think?

I'd like to check it out, see what's in
there. Yeah, that as well.

Throw in some test with a little trommel
maybe. Yep. And then we'll just take it

mine boss Fred Lewis has gambled his

$20 ,000, setting up a gold mine with a
Greenhorn crew of combat veterans.

We've been here four weeks with only
half an ounce of gold to show.

Problem after problem keeps plaguing us
here on the claim. If we don't get it

moving today...

The rest of the season is going to be a
washout, and we're going to go home with

nothing.

Stand by, stand by, stand by.

Fred's foreman, Kendall Madden, is the
only member of the team with any mining

experience.

He's in charge of firing up the watch
class, Colonel Nugget, for their first

full week of sleuthing.

This crew of veterans arrived three
weeks ago on a mission to turn their

around.

You know, gold means a lot to all of us.
Just another disabled bat who kind of,

you know, come on rough times and out of
work for a year and a half.

Special Operations Sergeant Kyle
Pletschke sees the plan.

I truly feel like I'm blessed with this
group of veterans because we can trust

each other so much. We can rely on each
other in some pretty significant ways,

and I'm expecting these guys to come out
like rock stars.

Fred and I were both at the Special
Operations Language School at Fort

North Carolina.

Less than two months later, we got
married in Vegas.

Fred's wife, Kara, Army Psychological
Operations Specialist, has come in to

manage the claim.

Fred might be the mine boss, but I am
the mine manager.

He's going to have to deal with me
telling him when things need to get

I have never managed a mine before. I've
never actually mined before.

So it's definitely a hands -on learning
experience.

But I've been ordering the books that we
need. We need our surface mine daily

inspection book. We need our checklist
for the vehicles.

Our MSHA certificates arrived because we
just got done doing our MSHA training.

MSHA is the Mine Safety and Health
Administration.

They give us what we need to be to be
compliant for our safety. And if we

compliant, if we don't follow the rules,
MSHA will come out here, and they will

tag us with massive fines.

There's a lot of stuff I'm seeing that
I'm really nervous we might not be

compliant with.

We'd get hit with a fine big time if
those inspectors came right now.

We'd be in a lot of trouble.

I knew that we were going to financially
struggle just trying to get by. So I

came up with this. I honestly didn't
think he could pull it together, but he

has.

However, we actually personally know the
crew, and these aren't just his

friends. They're kind of our family, and
you don't want to let family down.

If this collapses, if this doesn't work
out, We're screwed. They're screwed too.

So there's a lot on the line. It's a lot
of pressure.

So I can go a little faster.

Now we're running pay. We're catching
gold.

That's why we're here.

Water flow is pretty good. Our feed rate
is pretty consistent.

Just got to keep doing it thousands of

intra -ready. We are not ready to be

There are certain things I'm really glad

We have to get a protective cage around
the belt. We need rails on the catwalk.

ends. It's pretty soft.

One mistake, and then we've got to pull
it down and redo the whole ramp again.

so Tony can run them straight away.

With gold prices up and the cost of
running the tailings so low, these

tailings could give Tony a massive extra
payday.

Monica feeds the kiwi plant with 100
yards of pater an hour.

While rookie loader operator Desiree
Likens... Hey, Desiree!

...clears fine tailings from the end of
the spruce rug. Looks pretty nice on

there. Yep, everything's good.

Tony, there's extra pumps about what we
can get from this old -timer cut.

because right now it's just the time
we're going.

Hill, Monica B's loader operator has run
into the wash plant.

I hit the cable and the tray fell.

The loose run is off.

Every hour the plant is down costs Tony
up to $2 ,000 in lost gold.

Our hoe operator hooked the cable there,
the bucket, when they were pulling out,

and that pulled this beam forward, and
that caused this run to get pulled

forward, and that twisted our beam over
here.

Fun, fun, fun.

All we're going to have to do is bend
that bar back straight, weld the piece

back on relatively straight, and then
reset the angle on the run.

Welder Cody Hunter removes the sluice
run to get to the broken beam.

Pull that back there. Put a couple
little tacks on it.

Split this, we'll be done.

He cuts a slot so he can bend it.

Yeah, we'll just pull that back there.

That's hot.

and then welds it back together.

Heaven. Beam's all straightened back out
now. It's all welded up and ready for

the next time.

but it is crazy dangerous so we got to
stay extra safe because we want to

make sure everyone comes out with all
their fingers and toes to meet

generator onto stable ground.

move her down into its permanent

You've got to remember, if you slip up,
this thing full of oil and gas all

spills into our water and essentially
ruins our season. So, no pressure or

experience of heavy equipment was in

the military.

For my first 10 years in the Army, I
commanded a Bradley fighting vehicle.

Driving mechanized vehicles in the Army,
it's a lot different.
