started bringing home pieces of the

logs that we cut down and just worked on
them with different tools, got a lot of

tried it out on ice.

Well, I guess it's helpful to not think
of it so much as a sculpture and more

like a slice in time.

Like each layer I cut away is a new
gesture or movement.

Why ice?

I made a modest living carving bears and
other animals out of tree stumps.

But those were crude and rudimentary.

With the ice, it's the opposite. It's
fragile, delicate.

It requires patience and precision.

Two things I've had to learn.

Is your hand all right?

It just gets sore sometimes.

Did something happen to it?

Yeah.

About a year ago, I was carving a rather
large sculpture.

One of my cuts went off the wrong way,
and the whole thing came down.

I reached out to try and catch it, and
it just pinned my hand and broke a bunch

of bones, so I had to get surgery on it.

It's expensive, too.

That's why I took this job.

You know, I was afraid I wouldn't be
able to do any of this anymore, but it

healed up okay.

And that just hurts sometimes.
