a Tuskegee Airman during World War II?

That's so cool!

These were the first Black aviators

in the US military.

It wasn't easy for them either.

They faced segregation, discrimination,

and they still became heroes of the sky.

Tuskegee Airmen,

some of the toughest, and bravest pilots,

took down over 200 enemy planes.

[mimics bombing sounds]

That's right.

Your great-grandfather faced his fears

and overcame them.

You can, too.

But it terrifies me.

all the things that'll pass you by,

all because you were not willing

to look fear in the face and say,

I am bigger than you.

I can't let fear control me.

I need to be brave.

And start by trying to eat this mess.

It's very important that each of you understand

that getting your wings is a huge responsibility.

It requires that you constantly stay focused.

Be disciplined.

I had to prove I'm not a coward.

I have what it takes to be a Tuskegee Airman.

Before they drag you to the brig,

how'd you get up there?

I just closed my eyes for most of it.

Then I realized

I'm here to learn how to fly and help make this country safe.

Make my family safe.

And that's way more important than being afraid.

Cadet Dylan,

what you did was incredibly reckless

and dangerous.

But also daring and courageous.

You'll be joining your fellow cadets

as a Tuskegee Airman.

After all that training,

after every drop of sweat,

every fear faced,

and every limit pushed,

they did it.

They joined the war.

Up there in the skies,

they were more than just pilots.

They were symbols of hope and change.

They fought over 15,000 missions.

They fought with honor and bravery,

which earned us respect.

They earned more than 150 Distinguished Service medals.

But you know,

it wasn't just about the medals or the glory.

It was about proving that courage knows no color

and that excellence isn't exclusive

to any one race.
