I've been living in hawaii
for about three weeks now.

I've just been here working,
and I'm really excited

to take this time and kind of
find a place of my own.

How's everything going

is my old roommate,

We actually decided
to become roommates

because we both didn't like
our roommates at the time.

I walked into his room,
and I was like,

and he was like, "yep,"
and that was it.

Kawika: I went
to high school in mililani.

After high school,
I went a naval academy.

The navy sent me back
two years ago,

and now I'm ready to show
chris the lay of the land.

Some of my friends and I
are gonna go out tonight.

Chris: Oahu is just
an awesome place to live.

You're completely surrounded
by beauty at all times.

You can go hiking,
and on the same day,

you can go to the beach,
and then you can meet up

with all your friends
at a super-nice restaurant.

-Do you like sushi?
-Of course.

There's a really good one
down in waikiki.

Going out
is expensive, too.

I'm getting ready
to buy a house,

and so how I am
supposed to do that?

All you have to do
is just buy a couple beers.

The maximum that I'm willing
to spend on a home is $600,000.

I think I'm looking
to live more towards,

like, the central side
of the island.

I think that you should
live somewhere,

like, downtown,
centralized.

Okay.
It would be nice.

Like, everything is right there.
You'd be close to work.

If he gets a house out
in the middle of nowhere,

and nobody comes to visit him,
he'll get very lonely.

I'll just find new friends.
That's all it is.

Chris: You don't have to go
to a bar to meet new people.

Yeah, but you're not
gonna meet new people

sitting inside, either.

I'm a big fan
of the craftsman

because I'm a very
detail-oriented person,

and so I want something

that's gonna be able
to reflect that.

Chris still doesn't --

he's still single.

He needs his house to show
the ladies what he's all about,

and I don't think
a craftsman is really that.

is solar energy, like,
really big here?

Does, like, every house
have solar panels?

And then you can just run

Really?

My number-one deal breaker
for this home

is if it doesn't
have central ac,

and I'm definitely
gonna need something

that can help me stay cool.

today, we're on the leeward side
of oahu, close to the beach.

The views here from this home
are incredible,

extremely rare on oahu.

I really like how big
this driveway is,

and it's awesome that it's at
the end of a cul-de-sac, too.

Just not so sure on the style
of the home though.

Yeah. It looks more modern,
which is what I like.

And I guess it does have
some craftsman details

that you might be able
to see with the rafter

and the wood paneling up there.
That's kind of nice.

This is definitely
a lot of grass out here.

Chief would absolutely
love this.

Yeah, and
look at the view.

You can see almost 180 degrees
worth of mountains.

This is gorgeous.

The only thing is,
it's super far away.

Even though
it has a nice view,

I don't think
it's worth the drive.

Honolulu is about 45 minutes
to an hour away from here,

and that's with no traffic.

Oh, wow. This has a decent
amount of space in here.

I love that this patio
is right here, too.

The sliding door is
gonna make it

super easy
to let my dog out.

I like how you have
speakers in the ceiling.

That's pretty cool.
What am I gonna
use that for?

Entertaining.
I have my own speakers.

Another plus for you
is central ac.

That is nice. That is nice.

Kawika: I do like
the color scheme of this house.

However, the paint is super dark
with the only natural lighting

coming from this window
right here,

and it makes
the entire living area

kind of look dark
and gloomy.

Right. Fortunately,
they've done a great job

with opening up
the kitchen

to maximize the feel
of the space.

This is a cool,
little nook,

but I think it's too small
to really do a whole lot with.

I don't think that
I could really fit

a dining room table here.
Maybe just, like,

a bar cart or something
over there.

That would make sense.
-You could put a bar there.

You have speakers
in the ceiling.

It's gonna
be like a party.

I think it would definitely

that can be easily redone.

Sure, the kitchen
needs to be updated,

but it's really big,
so there's a lot of potential

to do a lot of stuff
with that space.

Whoa, carpet.

Not a big fan
of that.

Kawika: Even the color of
this room -- what is this?

it's not pretty, but you got
the mountain view there,

which is absolutely
breathtaking,

but I'm so distracted
by, like,

the shag carpet going on
in here and the green room.

Those views are pretty hard
to get on oahu

and almost worth
the time and money

it would take
to repaint and carpet.

I mean, that's a really
unique feature.

All right. I mean,
the shower looks pretty good.

It looks like
it was freshly tiled,

but uh,
blue knobs, huh?

I mean,
it stands out.

Yeah, it definitely stands out,
but this vanity is pretty old.

These countertops don't match,
the same one as downstairs,

and that sink
looks pretty outdated.

Definitely some work
that needs to be done here,

and we've got linoleum
on the floor, too.

Isi: It can be real
frustrating working with buyers

when they become real picky

over really minor things
that are just cosmetic.

I think the doorknobs
on the drawers,

I mean, that's a $0.50 fix.

Let's check out
the master bedroom.

-This master is pretty small.

And a weird
nook up there.

I don't even know
what you would put there.

You could
put plants up there.

kind of as the last one.

The vanity
is kind of old.

The sinks
look pretty good.

The shower is pretty
updated, though.

I don't know. I think the shower
is kind of bland.

Like, you can do a lot more
with your master shower,

and then you have
this weird painted glass

that looks like
it belongs in a cathedral.

I'm really surprised
by their reaction

to the condition of the home
on the second floor.

It's move-in-ready and
required very minimal work

or time
to get it fixed up.

I think they're kind of
overanalyzing it.

Like, the central ac in here --

The kitchen was
a nice touch, too.

I love how open
the kitchen is,

You know, I never thought I'd be
a fan of non-white cabinets,

but I'm looking at the gray
cabinets here, too,

and it looks
pretty good.

I love the sink
that they have here.

under-mounted, as well.

I really enjoy this kitchen,
but I'm a little disappointed

that this isn't
a craftsman-style home

because it has, like,
a lot of detailing in it.

One thing I think
you're really gonna like

is having this half bathroom
downstairs here

for your guests to use.

They used

I'm not too sure
how I feel about

this metal shiny piece thing
that they got going on there.

Other than that, I mean,
this bathroom looks good.

That would be

Okay. You can tell that
it was very recently updated,

but I don't know why they
would update it with carpet,

especially when you've got,
like, the nice wood flooring

going in the hallway.

really like this one.

Okay. This one is
a little bit bigger,

and this one definitely
has the best views,

I would say.

ocean view out there.

It's not necessarily
a huge master bedroom,

but, I mean,
it's spacious.

Definitely bigger than
all the other rooms, I'd say.

I like that

everything in here
looks updated.

You've got the dual sinks
going on here, again,

same quartz countertops.

The only thing I'm really
not jazzed about here

is the backsplash.

They used different materials
on the shower,

and the floors are different
in here, too.

It just kind of lost
its consistency here.

I'm surprised by chris' response
to the master bathroom.

It's a beautiful home
that's been remodeled.

There's nothing to fix.
I thought he would love it.

this house has
a lot of great features,

but I'm glad kawika
isn't here

because I'm sure that he would
have ripped this place apart

just based off of how far away
it is from honolulu.

Other than that,
I mean,

the views out here
are pretty good,

and this house is
very nearly move-in ready,

but the trade-off is that
there's no central ac,

so I think I'd like to see
something that might just be,

like, a little bit
closer

to where it is
that I'll be working.

And we can certainly look
closer to where you work,

but this has got everything
you're looking for.
Right.

The views to the ocean
and the mountain, unbeatable.

As we head closer
to town,

we're not even gonna have
anything close to that.

you're losing
a lot of space here,

and it's tight
already in here.

gonna entertain people

with a tv
that they cannot see?

Maybe we'll have to talk

I don't really know.

I like how this is
an open concept,

but this kitchen
seems kind of tight.

the rounded design maximizing
seating space for people.

I can actually see
that this would be

a nice place to eat,

that I was hoping for.

hasn't been updated

since the house
was built in 2004,

so I'm definitely
a little disappointed.

Outside here, we have a nice,
little entertaining area.

It could be for
a barbecue or seating,

and we can go outside
and take a look.

This is a perfect backyard.

I think this is gonna
be awesome

for my dog
to run around in.

I think he's really
gonna enjoy this.

You can set up some chairs,

Carpet is really hard
to keep clean,

especially on the stairs.

It's looking

I like how the crown molding
kind of matches

with the white baseboards.

especially off of these floors
and the paint color.

I'm just not a really big fan
of the window sliding doors.

It helps the room to feel
bigger but definitely older.

of the room is okay.

It seems like it would be
great for an office

or something
like that.

I'm just not a big fan
of how the bathroom is open

to the master
bedroom space.

The bathroom design
would allow two people

to get ready at the same time --
one in the actual bathroom,

one at the vanity
and the sink.

I don't know about
this bathroom.

This has plenty of space
for two sinks,

but there's
only one.

Kawika: Yeah, there's
nothing exciting

going on here at all.

You're gonna
have to, like,

tear it up,
put a new one in.

I can see that,
but it is nice

that there's a walk-in
closet over here.

There's a lot of space.
-Nice feature.

A lot of homes in hawaii
don't have that.

This isn't exactly
what I imagined

in terms
of a master bathroom,

and I'm really not looking
forward to the possibility

of having
to put in work on that.

I absolutely love that
this place has central ac.

Got to stay cool.

I like how the living areas
are pretty updated,

but I think it's gonna need
some work in here,

and I don't know if I'm willing
to put in that effort.

Yeah, the kitchen is gonna

have to get changed out,

and it's not centrally
located at all.

You're gonna have to drive
anywhere and everywhere,

and I don't think anybody
is gonna make it down here

this is my first time
buying a home.

This is my first time
in hawaii.

I have a really, really big
decision that I have to make.

Yeah. Let's talk
about the houses.

We had the contemporary
that was pretty far away.

It was on
the leeward side.

It had the perfect
backyard for chief,

amazing views,
central ac,

and I was really impressed with
the living area of that house,

but as we transitioned
to the kitchen,

there were, like,
these lazy lines

where they just didn't
even bother

trying to tape
off the paint.

Plus, it didn't have
the quartz countertops.

It was just laminate,

and on top of
the kitchen remodel,

we're more or less
talking about

a full-on bathroom
remodel in there, too.

Yeah, but what I liked
about that one was,

I think it's a good balance
between being move-in ready

but then still
allowing you to add

some of your personal touches,
and the price is right.

And then there was
the contemporary house.

That one was on
the leeward side,

pretty far away from town,
but it was move-in ready,

had all the updates
I was really looking for,

and the kitchen
was perfect.

What I really liked about
that one is, it's move-in ready,

and I think that, you know,
once you get into it,

you might find out
that you're glad you got one

that doesn't need
any work.

That is missing
one big piece,

and that was
the central ac.

And then we also had hawaii's
version of a craftsman.

There were some things to love
and hate about that one.

The countertops
were pretty atrocious,

no stainless steel
appliances,

almost, like,
a complete gut of the kitchen.

With that being said,
it did have central ac.

The floors were pretty recently
done and updated,

good backyard
for chief, too,

and I really enjoyed that
it was in a quiet neighborhood.

Although the backyard
is definitely gonna

need some
landscaping work.

Yeah, I think that home
had some really good bones

and a lot of potential,
but that's a big project.

Yeah, so, these
actually have

the blinds built
into the glass.

At the end of the day,
I decided to go with

the hawaiian-style
craftsman,

which is
a traditional-style home.

This house was advertised
for $540,000,

but I was able to reduce
the purchase price

to $538,000 based off
of some minor repairs

that needed to be done.

So I'm gonna need
a screwdriver.

I think the biggest reason
for why I decided

to choose this house was value.

I think that this house
was kind of priced at a steal,

and so I'm gonna be able
to generate

a lot of equity from this house.

-It just fits.
-Perfect.

I closed on this house
two weeks ago,

and ever since closing,
I've been knocking out

as many renovations as I can.

The first thing that I did
was, I went ahead,

and I got new appliances
in here,

repainted the cabinets because
they were nicked and gnarly.

-I know.
-How's it look?

It looks the same
as that one.

-Yeah?
-Yeah.

I've got new light fixtures
going on in the kitchen,

and I've got a counter guy
coming next week

to replace these countertops

just with
some quartz countertops.

You want it, bud?

Go get it.

Chief is really enjoying
the new house.

It's nice to finally
have a backyard for him

where he can just go out
and do whatever he wants

for as long as he wants to.

Check out
the backyard.

While I don't have
any furniture here yet,

it was definitely
one of my goals

to create an awesome outdoor
experience in the backyard,

so I went ahead
and put out a firepit.

What I don't
understand is

why you would have
a fireplace in hawaii.

Well, it's like getting
close to the volcano

but not actually
being near the volcano.

I think kawika is really
enjoying the house so far.

I think he finally got over

his aversion
to driving out here.

So the long drive isn't that bad

because chris pays me back
by giving me some beers,

and then we hang out with chief.

Seriously, that's what it is?
You just have to hit it?

I think the best part
of owning my home

is the fact that I don't
have to answer to anyone.

When the cable guy was coming

to install internet
in the house,

he asked me if he could
drill a hole in the wall,

and I said, "sure. Go for it.

I don't have a landlord
to answer to anymore."
