[frogs croaking] - You're doomed. You're doomed.
You're doomed. You're doomed.
- Dear Max, by the time you're reading this,
you would have seen my note about returning
to Byjovia to find my parents.
- [croaking] You're doomed. You're doomed.
- I fear they are in grave danger...
pun sadly intended.
[dramatic tone] [screams]
[whimpers]
- You're doomed. You're doomed.
- [whimpers]
As I said in my last letter,
I am truly sorry that my shortcomings
jeopardized our quest.
I never possessed what it took to be a Midknight.
I was all brains and no brawn.
[splashing] [fart noises]
[flames roaring]
[panting]
Joining you on this quest has been the honor of my life.
Farewell and salutations.
Your friend, Kevyn.
Postscript... tell Uncle Budrick
and Simon I'll miss them too.
- [croaking] You're doomed. You're doomed.
[squelches] Doomed.
[upbeat music]
- ? Lotta people tellin' me what I should be ?
? But I wanna make my own destiny ?
- [growls] - ? Got a feelin' ?
? That it might be time for me ?
? To find my own way - [grunts]
- ? 'Cause I can feel it in my heart ?
? It takes a lot to be brave, but just a little to start ?
? Let's go take a million chances ?
? Let's go change our circumstances ?
? I'm gonna write my own story ?
? And the hero is me ?
[Simon snorts]
- So, first we find Kevyn,
then we rescue his parents, then King Conrad.
And then we take down Fendra and Gastley.
- And at some point, we turn me
back into a man, right?
- We'll see. - [whimpers]
- Don't worry, Simon.
I haven't forgotten about Millie.
- I just hope she's not lost forever to dark magic.
- Me too.
Hey!
Those look like Kevyn's footprints!
- [sniffing]
Smells like them too.
The boy's a genius, but his feet stink.
[whinnies]
- We gotta find him. He's all alone out there,
and we don't want him to wind up like that guy.
[dramatic music]
- [whimpers]
- [whinnies]
- [mutters]
A dragon's scale, a troll's tooth.
[mumbles]
Mm.
Almost there.
- Hiya.
Where are you going? - [groans]
To gather the ingredients for the spell
which will allow me to...
- Rule Byjovia forever.
Yeah, yeah. I know.
Oh, I'll get my broom!
[whooshes]
Check it out.
Mine has a dustpan.
- Oh.
Millicent, I'd like nothing more
than for you to come with me,
but I need you to...
stir the cauldron.
Yes, thousand times.
Make it a million.
- Stir the cauldron?
[gasps]
Oh, I thought you'd never ask!
Go, go.
[gruffly] I got this.
- Good. I'll just take this...
ahh! [energy whooshing]
- Oh, yeah.
It's probably doing that 'cause I'm the mistress
of the book and not you.
- Thank you for reminding me.
May I please borrow it?
- Sure.
Go with Fendra, Blinky.
- Ugh, Blinky.
[ominous music]
[grunts]
? ?
- One toil and trouble,
two... oh.
Oh, no. I lost count.
One toil and trouble...
- [croaks] Doomed.
- And as Kevyn continued, he couldn't help
but contemplate what a difference a day makes,
for it was just one day earlier that
he and the Midknights were together,
- [crow cawing] - United by their noble purpose
of saving a kingdom.
How desperately lonely that thought made him feel.
But then Kevyn spotted something in the distance.
No, wait.
Not... not something.
Someone.
His instincts told him to be suspicious,
but his cockeyed optimism urged him forward.
[pants] Hello there.
How nice to encounter a fellow traveler.
Tell me, um, are you perchance headed to Byjovia?
- Bloody unlikely.
I just left there.
- Wait, I know you.
You're that pilfering pickpocket.
- Guilty as charged!
Hand over your valuables.
Better yet, how about I hold you for ransom?
- [yelps]
- Gotcha. - Oh, no.
- [humming]
[giggles]
You know, Barley, I thought I was
going to hate being imprisoned in an enchanted forest.
Ooh. [chuckles]
But I quite like it.
- Oh, indeed, Bean!
Oh, here's an idea.
How about we turn this lovely cottage
into a hotel for travelers?
- [gasps] Wha... ah!
And we'll call it Bean and Barley's Bed and Breakfast!
[laughs]
Just so long as that horrible witch never returns.
- Oh, her.
Well, she's not coming back.
- [clears throat]
both: [screaming]
She's back!
[splashing]
[light ominous music]
- These are definitely Kevyn's tracks.
- But whose are those?
- And whose are these?
- Uncle Budrick, those are yours.
- Oh, right.
Yeah, I just keep forgetting I'm a hoose.
[chuckles]
- [sighs] Kevyn, who did you run into?
- [snorts]
- And so Kevyn watched as the thief rifled
through his pathetic belongings.
- What are you doing?
- Narrating.
Pathetically.
- Well, stop it or else.
- [gasps]
- [sniffs]
What's this then, hmm?
A diary for your feelings?
- No.
It's my account of the journey I've been on with my friends.
I've quite literally recorded every step we've taken,
from leaving Byjovia to navigating this gaseous bog.
- Hmm. Mm-hmm.
- But a lot of good that's done.
Our journey failed, my friends are gone,
and who knows what fate has befallen my parents?
So if it's a ransom you're after,
I'm utterly worthless.
Here I sit, bound by an impenetrable knot...
- I do tie a good knot.
- Incapable of doing anything,
because that's who I am, pathetic Kevyn
with his pathetic love of books and vocabulary.
So you go ahead, Mr. Thief.
Do your worst.
Snap me in two as if I was nothing
more than a measly quill!
Nothing you do can make me feel lower than I already am!
- You're a weird kid.
Less taking, more walking.
[crows cawing]
- Oh, she's back. She's back.
- I know!
- I thought you said she wasn't going to come back.
- It was a guess.
I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it.
- Shh! Quiet.
[glass shatters] - Oh, good.
The ingredients are still here.
Except, of course, for the knight's courage,
which those stupid brats gave to Gadabout.
Have to find that another way.
[both whimpering]
- Mm, wait.
Where is my troll tooth?
Did you use my troll's tooth for soup?
- No! I swear!
- He's telling the truth.
It's only water and herbs.
- Oi! Only water and herbs?
It's a deliciously slow-cooked broth.
- Oh, come now.
It's basically tea, Barley.
- Stop your blabbering!
- [yelping] - Ugh!
I'll just have to find another tooth.
- [exhales deeply]
[door slams]
[dramatic music]
- Barrier, be gone!
[crackling]
[whooshes]
- Well, uh, I guess that means we can return to Byjovia now.
- Oh, great. Yeah.
I... I guess so.
Hey, um, it smells like your tea is ready.
- It's not tea.
It's a deliciously slow-cooked broth.
- Yeah, well, I don't know about the whole "delicious"
or "broth" part, but yeah.
- It's soup, Bean!
- Call it whatever you want. It tastes like tea.
[sloshing]
[quirky ominous music]
? ?
- [gasps]
[armor clanking]
[gasps]
[sighs]
What are you scared of, Millie?
You're green, and you're magic.
- Hey, where do you think you're going?
- By my word, you will obey.
Do not as I do, but as I say.
I'm going to the dungeon, so get out of my way!
- Shall we escort you?
- Thanks, but I'm good.
- Good day, milady.
- Kevyn!
- Kev! - Kevyn!
- Kevyn!
- Kevyn... ahh!
[grunts]
[groans]
- Can you hear us?
- Kevyn!
- Kevyn!
- Oh, oh, look!
[soft dramatic music]
- Kevyn would never leave his quill behind.
- He must be in worse trouble than we thought.
We've gotta hurry!
- [whinnies]
[dramatic music]
- And so Kevyn trudged on,
mired in his feelings of anger and disappointment.
- I thought I told you to stop that, or else.
- And I thought I told you, I don't care what you do to me.
- [snarls] - Ahh!
- Though I'm quickly reconsidering that position.
- So all these stories, they, uh...
they really happened to you?
- Every painstaking detail.
I'm not a fan of embellishment.
- You were able to help your friends escape a deadly maze
using only your memory? - Yes.
- And you actually climbed a dragon tree
to save your friend's life? - Yes.
- And were pooped out by a giant forest monster?
- I just managed to purge that from my memory, but yes.
[croaks, squelches]
- Oh, Kevyn.
- What?
- If all this is true, then you are so much more
than just a wordy little bookworm.
- Really? - Yes.
And I think you are really selling yourself short, laddie.
The Kevyn in this book has brains and brawn.
- Gee, I guess...
thank you?
You know, for a thief, you possess
impressive emotional intelligence.
Why don't you display that side of your personality more often?
- Because I'm a thief.
Ah, Granddad was a thief,
me dad was a thief, and now I'm a thief.
And thieves don't need emotional intelligence.
- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. True.
But have you ever thought about being anything
other than a thief?
Perhaps a career in psychotherapy?
- [scoffs] No.
'Cause that's against the law, now, isn't it?
- Well, yes, but you have broken every other law.
What's one more?
- Hmm.
Mm. That's it.
- No, no, no!
In his last... in his last breath,
Kevyn's life flashed before his...
Wait a minute.
You're freeing me?
Why?
- 'Cause you just blew me mind, little man!
A change in my career is breaking the law.
It's perfect for me!
[laughs]
And in that moment, Lesley realized
he was gonna be a psychotherapist.
Whoo!
Oh, look at me, yeah?
I'm narrating.
- [laughs] Positively transcendental, isn't it?
Kevyn said.
[laughter]
- Yeah, whatever that means.
Hey, here's your book, lad.
Sorry about breaking your quill.
Now, you go on. Get out of here.
On your way, laddie.
And good luck with your parents.
- Thank you very much, Mr. Thief.
But I still don't know if I have
what it takes to rescue them,
especially without my friends.
- Look!
His tracks go right into the bog.
[tense music]
? ?
[splashing]
[fart noises]
[flames roar]
[screaming]
- [sighs] I miss them so much,
it's like I can still hear their voices.
- I don't even know 'em,
and I think I can hear their voices.
- Wait.
Wait, you heard that too?
That means... ahh!
Come on!
- Careful!
Watch out for the flame!
- I wish that advice was more comforting!
- Ahh!
Why won't these wings work?
[screaming, whinnying]
- Need a hand?
- Kevyn!
- Oh, Kevyn, thank goodness!
Help! - Uncle Budrick?
- He's a horse now!
- Half horse, half goose!
A hoose!
- [gasps] You coined a portmanteau without me?
- Can we talk about it after you save us?
- Don't worry.
I encountered this very bog earlier.
I studied the frogs and figured out their leaping pattern.
Ah-ha!
Here. [clears throat]
Though the blasts of gas and fire seem random,
there's actually a pattern to it all.
There are always two short blasts
of air before the flames.
[fart noise] One...
[fart noise] Two...
[flames roar] Flame!
- Is it just me, or do those sound like...
- [laughs, gasps]
- Come on, people. Make haste.
- Come on!
[dramatic music]
- Okay. [fart noise]
One blast... [fart noise]
Two blasts... [fart noise]
Kevyn!
You said there were only two!
- Oops. Sorry, that was me.
I get a little gassy when I'm nervous,
and I don't really know how the inside
of this double animal works.
[flames roar] - [gasps]
- There are two blasts. [fart noise]
One... [fart noise]
Two...
Go!
- [panting]
- Now stop! - Ahh!
What now?
- You're at the last one, but be careful.
This time, the second blast of gas is
silent but deadly.
[whooshing]
[fart noise]
[gurgling]
- [whimpers]
[flames roar] [screaming]
- Go!
[dramatic rock music]
? ?
- We did it!
We're alive!
Take that, fart bog!
Ahh!
[whimpers]
- [exhales] Thanks, Kev.
Hey, wait.
Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Stand back.
Everybody, this man's a thief!
- It's quite all right, Max.
I assure you, Lesley's not a threat.
He narrates now.
- He does, said Lesley.
Besides, who you calling a thief?
You stole my dagger.
- Well, yes.
But...
- But I stole it first.
So I'll guess fair's fair.
Come on. Friends?
Here, have some gum.
- Hey, that's my gum.
Wait, did you steal that from my pocket?
- Yeah, sorry.
Old habits.
Anyway, good luck finding your parents, Kevyn.
- Many thanks.
- And so Lesley the Sensitive set forth,
a changed man.
- Oh, my dear friends.
I must say, I'm delighted you found me.
- More like you found us.
- We're going back to Byjovia.
What do you say, Kev?
You want to rejoin the Midknights?
- Max, it thrills me that you haven't given up, really.
But...
- Hey, you said in your letter that
you wouldn't hesitate to go on another journey with us.
- And I meant it, but,
well, it's the other part of the letter.
Are you sure I have what it takes to be a Midknight?
- Are you kidding?
I thought you were a goner without us,
but we would have been goners without you.
You somehow befriended that thief.
- And because of your notes, you saved us from the fart bog.
- Yeah, I thought I was one dead hoose.
- After all that, we should be called
Kevyn and the Midknights.
- Aw, thanks, Max.
Very kind of you to say, but no.
No, no, no.
Max and the Midknights is the perfect name.
It's much more alliterative.
[sentimental music]
[fart noise]
- Uncle Budrick, please tell me that was the bog.
- I wish I could.
- Uncle Budrick, that's worse than the bog.
- Ugh, it's so foul.
- No, it's foal.
Get it? [laughs]
[farts] Oh.
Oh. [farting]
- Millie, what are you doing here?
- I'm here to save you.
- [gasps]
- [exhales]
You had me worried there, Millie.
- I know.
I look pretty evil with green skin, don't I?
Wait, where's King Conrad?
I have to save him too.
- Fendra took him and Gastley, but we don't know where.
- [gasps] Come on.
We need to go before Fendra comes...
[screams]
- What do we have here?
- Oh, Fendra!
My mentor, back so soon!
- What are you doing?
- Oh, I was just taking a break from stirring
and thought I'd take the prisoners out
and punish them a bit.
You know, let them loose in that maze.
Maybe dump bucket of snakes in there, too, to chase them.
- It looks more like you're trying to free them.
- [blows raspberry] No!
I'm just toying with their emotions to torture them.
I said I was gonna save them.
[laughs]
- Prove it.
- Fine, I will.
- Eliminate them.
- Eliminate?
[chuckles] With pleasure.
Goodbye.
- Wait... oh!
- Ha! Zap!
Felt good.
Felt real good.
- Come along, then.
There's much to do.
[ominous music]
? ?
- [gasps] We're alive.
- Oh, and tiny.
- We have to figure out how to get out of this castle.
Come on. - Right.
[panting]
- You had me worried, Millicent.
- But not anymore, right?
Because I am totally on your side.
Team Evil, all the way.
Give me an E!
Give me a V!
Give me a... - [groans]
- [gasps]
So, uh, how was your day?
- I retrieved all of my spell ingredients, save one.
I still need a true knight's courage.
- Ooh, Sir Gadabout's courage?
- No. The old fool's vanished.
But no matter.
There's always another solution.
I simply must find the truest knight in all the land.
- What are you gonna do,
check out every knight on Earth?
That'll take forever.
- Not if they come to me.
You see, I'll summon every swordsman in the land
to come to Byjovia for a friendly little tournament.
Whoever wins will be the one true knight
I have been looking for.
[grunts]
[crows cawing]
[dramatic music]
- Wow.
? ?
- Fly, fly!
Bring me my knights!
[cawing]
[cackling]
- Get ready, Kevyn.
You're gonna have to answer a couple more riddles.
- Ready, not to mention willing and able.
- Oh, no. Look!
[embers sizzling]
- Max, you... you're back.
- Jack, Graugnar.
What... what happened to your bridge?
- That witch came back.
[all gasp] - Fendra.
[indistinct chatter]
- Do you think it's gonna take my food?
It's looking right at me.
I feel threatened. - Don't move.
- I'm a hoose, people!
Deal with it!
- Why's it talking?
- So Fendra just showed up and took another tooth?
- Yes.
[sobbing]
- I don't get it.
Why would Fendra want another tooth?
- Because I took the first one.
- [gasps] Oh, my tooth!
[laughs]
[crow cawing]
- Byjovia is hosting a jousting tournament.
- What? "Calling all knights"?
What? Why is Fendra calling knights?
- Fendra lost Graugnar's tooth, so she replaced it.
And she doesn't have Sir Gadabout's courage...
- So she's looking for another knight's courage.
But why?
- A riddle.
- 'Cause they're ingredients.
For a spell.
- Precisely.
- If we're gonna save King Conrad,
we need to get back to Byjovia quick.
- But won't Fendra recognize us?
Well, not me, but you?
- [gasps] We'll go in disguise.
- As what?
- Well, they are calling all knights.
- I think we can help with that, right, G?
[light suspenseful music]
? ?
Remember these guys, Graugnar?
- [laughs] Yeah, I remember.
[burps]
- [laughs nervously] Great.
[adventurous music]
You guys ready for this?
- Ready. - Let's go.
? ?
- Kevyn, take it away.
- [clears throat]
And so on day 36, partially reunited,
Max and the Midknights embarked on their journey home,
determined to save Byjovia and their loved ones.
As they walked, they couldn't help but think,
what challenges and perils lie ahead?
And would their mission be a success?
- [farts] - Uncle Budrick!
- It wasn't me!
It must have been another fart bog.
Okay, fine. It was me.
[farts]
- Oh, Uncle Budrick, stop.
- Oh, putrid!
- Oh, no, no, no, no.
[laughter]
[whooshes, clangs]
