Today's Earth Day,

so we're having class in the great outdoors!

[Kat gasps] Where did all these flowers

come from, Ms. Moreno?

with a super-mega grow ray!

all the rain last week helped the flowers bloom.

Oh, there's pretty everywhere I look.

That's exactly what Earth Day is about, Berti.

Appreciating the Earth and thinking

about how we can take care of it too.

Now, nature lovers,

our first planet-protecting job of the day

is to build bird feeders, like this.

We'll hang these outside

for our feathered friends to nibble on.

They're made from pinecones,

sunflower butter, and bird seeds.

But first,

we'll need to gather some pinecones.

So, a-pinecone-hunting

you shall go!

- [kids laughing, cheering] - Yeah!

[Berti] Here, pinecone, pinecone, pinecone...

[gasps] Got one!

Me too!

[gasps] Look at these pretty flowers!

[sniffs] Whoa!

They smell like my ma's perfume.

It's called "Smells of Spring."

I can smell the flowers all day like this.

I think I know an easier way

to smell the flowers all day.

By making perfume with them!

We just need some supplies

I'll go get the bird seed to put on them.

We used bird seeds for our bird feeders,

Yes. We can plant these new seeds today

all over the yard.

They'll grow into fabulous flowers.

Today, we'll be celebrating Earth Day

by learning all about... dirt!

Dirt's cool. Bugs live in it.

It helps seeds grow into flowers!

Some dinosaurs buried their eggs in dirt.

So, you see why dirt is so dear to us.

That's why, today, we're building a compost bin.

- A what? - [confused chatter]

It's a container

where you put fruit and veggie scraps,

and anything else that grew in the dirt.

After time, those scraps in the compost bin

get old and goopy until...

it turns into dirt!

- Really? - Wow.

Dirt!

I'll need your help putting the bin together.

Then we'll start composting.

- [excited chatter] - [Ms. Moreno] Berti, Tej, Kenji,

would you mind grabbing some cardboard from inside?

Cardboard comes from trees

and helps with composting.

- Okay. - [Kenji] You got it.

[chanting in unison] Dirt! Dirt! Dirt! Dirt! Dirt! Dirt!

So, where's the cardboard?

I think it's over there.

[sniffing] What's that?

and he can lead us around to find the smell.

Mine smells like dino-feet.

But that's a good smell.

Kidlings, we're going to need that cardboard-

Oh! What's that smell?

It's not a smell.

It's a stink.

A rotten banana I found in my cubby.

We were trying to get rid of it

before its smell ruined kindergarten.

Nobody wants to be in a stinky school.

But now the banana's just a bigger,

stinkier mess on the floor.

Well, maybe you see a stinky banana.

But I see a garden of lush plants.

Huh? Where?

There! Ms. M said old fruits

and veggies are great for the earth.

All we have to do is put

that banana in the compost bin.

And after some time...

...it'll turn into fresh dirt

for new things to grow in!

Like... [vocalizes] Magic!

The new compost bin is magical!

And so is the fresh dirt it creates.

But luckily, the second-graders' compost bin

has lots of fresh dirt,

and Mr. Kim said we can use some to plant seeds

in these recycled yogurt cups.
