The Adventures of Giacomo Casanova was
withdrawn from theaters in March of 1955

"on account of offenses against
morality, good manners, decency."

Later, it was edited with
around 500 meters cut out,

while the negative
disappeared without a trace.

The reconstruction of the present
version was made possible

thanks to the discovery of a second color
negative, shorter than the original,

used for the French version,
a b &w positive, almost complete,

and some working copies in
b& w and color.

The scenes in b & w reintegrated
into the negative, were digitally

toned to avoid an excessive contrast
in the picture quality of the film.

The Italian soundtrack being joined
with the negative of the French version

is not perfectly
synchronized with the lips.

The restoration has been realized by the
Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia,

Cineteca Nazionale and Ripley's Film.
The work has been carried out at

the Digital Film Lab (Copenhagen),
L.E. Diapason, Lobster Films (France)

and Cinecittà (Rome).
