I was born in a small town.

How did you decide to pick each other?
I thought, like, we would just blend really well.

I was a bit worried about picking my own song,

but I did think that that song
suited both strong pop singers.

of missing my family.
My parents have always said,

I think the peace that they have

I have lived virtually my entire life
in College Station, Texas.
For college, I moved 10 minutes down the road,
and now, I'm, like, 1,300 miles away.
So, while it has been hard to be away from family,
I feel like I've kind of had an opportunity to create a new one.

like, the community that we have here.

Niall: Ava and Aiden,
two really strong, powerful voices,
very different voices, but blend very nicely together.

The musicians I grew up on

that just tells a story really well.

My only note would be starting as small as you can.
Because if you're going to have an ending as big as that,
make sure we slowly get there.
I remember when I was in the studio
with Julia, recording this.
Every time she sung this song, she cried.
She's that into her lyric and what she's saying.
It puts you in the moment. Exactly what you're saying.
Especially in a song like this.
Like, this is not the biggest pop song on the planet,
but it did really well because of the emotion that's conveyed.
Songwriting is like a form of therapy for me.
It was especially an outlet for me
after my sister passed away.
Being able to process it through music,
it is a way to express things
you wouldn't know how to,
or you wouldn't normally express.
The fact that Niall trusts us with this song is amazing.
He trusts us to take it as our own and kind of fly with it.
I mean, this is high-stakes.
I wouldn't overthink
'cause sometimes, when you do a duet,
you feel like you're forcing something that's not there.
So, when it feels like the right time,
you'll probably turn into each other.
I wouldn't overthink it. Yeah, yeah.
Me and Lewis look into each other's eyes longingly
in all of our performances. Always, always.
Remember when we sung "Teenage Dream" that time?
Yes, I think we smooched. Yeah, we did.
Even right there, that was really good technique.

I got to hear Chris and do a sing-in at the ACM Awards.

This song reminds me of
my journey with my wife.
We met in 10th grade.
Sooner than later, we were married
and now we have a beautiful life together.
In order to give her that dream,
I had to mow a lotta lawns.
Slowly but surely was able to find some success
in the lawn care business, and I felt very proud
when I was able to give Sydney the life she wanted.
And now I feel like it's come tenfold
where she's pushing me and helping me get to the place
that I want to be in my music career.
She's a big part of why I'm here today.

that I love in the country voice.

but he can also extend his range to sing very high

In high school, I started writing my own music,

Through that, I was able to
book some gigs and get some experience performing,
and I moved to Nashville.
I was gigging on Broadway 4 to 5 days a week.
I feel like in some way
it would be heartbreaking to go home.
I've worked really hard to be here today
and to be able to work with Reba and Nick Jonas,
who have so much experience,
is amazing because now I'm here doing something
that could change my career.
I think one of the things that's really gonna
make this potentially
one of the performances of the night
is your performance should match the vocal performance. Oh, totally.

The depth that she has, she accesses it so easily,
and she's not embarrassed or ashamed of it
as she continues to run into the arms of her emotions.

There's like a little rasp that you get in your voice

and get more confident, 'cause it's a record
where he can actually show
he can take a song that's not his and make it his.
Mindy, when you get a little bit higher in your range,
it can get into the nasal area.

When you're up there,

So I kind of want you to practice relaxing

And I think that's what can make you stand out
in this performance as well. Right.
To be coached by some of the best artists in the industry,
I feel very privileged, honestly, to be here.
This was my opportunity to show that I can be versatile
and that I can sing a song
that's maybe out of my comfort zone.
This whole process with each other,
it's been such a beautiful thing.
You know, we come from different sides of the country.
We both have very different stories,
very different backgrounds,
and somehow we were both just able to connect with the song.
See, this is what America needs to see.
They need to see... Amen.
...people coming together from all walks of life,
and how music is the universal language of all people.
Very little dividing us, even though they try to make it seem like there's a lot.

since we're putting two different emotional stories,
I think it makes it ten times more emotional.

This song is about
self-worth and not feeling like you're enough,
but you have somebody in your corner
to tell you that you are enough.
I like to tie it to my dad.
There were many times in high school
where I battled with insecurity,
and he's always brought my confidence up,
even when I didn't have it.
Being an artist,
you're around people that are going after it.
You're surrounded by people who want the same things as you.
As much as you try not to let naysayers get to you,
it does get to you.
But I feel like Niall really gets us as artists,
so I've kind of had to start accepting.
Maybe I do have what it takes to do well in this competition
and to keep on going.
What I admire about you so much
is you're such an emotional singer.
It's actually really inspired me.

How do you navigate that?
Like singing really emotional songs that mean a lot to you,
but also being able to perform and keeping it real
but not getting choked up.
Sometimes it's just about how vulnerable I'm feeling on the day
or how I feel in that moment.
I wouldn't say it's ever a bad thing
to be caught up in the emotion of a song
that just shows that you're so into what the song's about.
Sometimes I get hit by a couple of songs
that I've written out of nowhere,
and it's just a moment. It just happens.
Could be one of those big "Voice" moments we all YouTube.

I've done it. Like with your audition.
Kirbi: Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Oh, no. Carolina--

And I'm thinking, "What was that?"

Angelic is a great way to describe Kirbi's voice.
It was just very floaty in places.
And, like, not just Kirbi, but Carolina as well.
Especially towards the end of those,
some of those lines and phrases.

Sometimes you watch performances
and there's something about it just hits you in the gut.
You could tell they were both giving it 100% in there.
I just loved watching it.
They don't need any advice from me about
how to connect more emotionally with the music,
because they're doing an amazing job of it already. Yeah, 100%.
