It's minus 20 degrees in the Italian Alps.

And an extraordinary adventure must to begin.

This wolf has led his family through ten dangerous winters.

It is the most difficult time. There is not much food.

The mood is tense in the couple.

The she-wolf is the mother of them all.

But to survive may she leave them this year -

- and embark on a journey to find a new home alone.

She has to endure blizzards and biting winds.

Along the way, she gives birth to six cubs.

She has to find food and protect his new family.

On the run from predators and hunters -

- she is forced into the unknown and hostile territories.

It will be biggest challenge of her life.

This is the dramatized story about an unusual wolf.

The Dolomites... The strangest peaks in the Alps.

The mountains were once a coral reef and was forced up out of the sea -

- millions of years ago.

Winter is almost over. There is almost nothing to eat.

The animals are tired, weak and desperate for food.

For all who live here, It is the most difficult time of the year.

The she-wolf prepares to hunt.

But she is not alone. She is surrounded by the clutch.

By her side is the alpha male. And together they decide.

The young deer does not stay an easy prey.

But she has a plan.

On her cue the clutch goes into action.

Instinctively at the young deer, what it should do.

It's in its genes.

It knows how to trick them.

It carries the clutch into the middle of the pack.

It is exactly what the she-wolf had planned.

Now she can shut down the easiest swap.

A sick deer.

By sacrificing one of his own will this deer survive.

In the winter the deer gather in large herds.

More ears to hear dangers. More eyes to see them coming.

They cower against the cold and lowers their heart rate.

They save energy -

- the key to survival under these icy conditions.

The wolves' teamwork and tactics paid off. Their first meal in weeks.

Lured by the promise of food -

- tests the oldest youngster boundaries of hierarchy.

He challenges his father, the alpha male.

He has to follow the rules. The alpha couple eats before the young.

He must wait his turn.

In these mountains the wolves have only one rival.

The brown bear.

This one just woke up after a long hibernating and haven't eaten in months.

The alpha male knows he can't hit a bear that size.

Normally he would have pulled back off now, but today -

- with tensions in the herd -

- must he assert himself and show, that he still decides.

He stresses the bear to prevent it from eating -

- chasing it from every angle and trying to exhaust it.

But the bear is not afraid. It is the strongest and it knows it.

He is badly injured and can no longer lead.

It is a critical moment. The pack needs a new leader.

Everyone's eyes turn against the eldest son.

The herd submits a new chief.

The she-wolf stays with her mate.

Loyal to the end. Wolves mate for life.

Their bond is one of the strongest in the animal kingdom.

The alpha male has succumbed for his wounds.

The she-wolf must now find the strength to leave his side.

She can't go back to his own flock.

Her place is already taken by one of her daughters...

... which immediately comes into heat and gives birth to her own litter.

This ensures the success of the coupling for the future.

If she stays, must she fight her own daughter.

She has to go.

But she is not alone.

In a few weeks she gives birth to another litter of young.

In the wolf community can only the alpha female reproduces.

Her cubs almost completely wanted likely to be killed at birth.

Her instinct tells her, that she must leave the mountains -

- where she has always lived, and take as far away as possible...

... to find a new home for himself and his family.

What lies behind the mountains?

She will find out.

Heading north, the she-wolf moves along the top of the ridge.

She holds herself up high to avoid meeting other wolves.

She moves up to 65 kilometers per day.

There are only three weeks until the birth.

She leaves the Dolomites at Brunico -

- and it's the end of March, when she comes to Austria.

In a few days she crosses several mountain ranges and rivers -

- before she moves towards Tyrol in western Austria.

The she-wolf braves the elements in the vast wilderness -

- while she is followed by many eyes.

She has a shadow. A lamb vulture is her traveling companion.

They also return to the Alps after an absence of more than a hundred years.

Feared and hunted until they were endangered -

- became the lamb vultures reintroduced 20 years ago.

And they are slowly becoming more numerous.

This male is six years old.

It was born on Mont Blanc, but left when it was very young.

It flies thousands of kilometers every year -

- and looking for travelers to follow for days.

The wolf is the vulture's favorite companion.

They offer the best loot in a barren landscape.

But it doesn't wait, that the she-wolf dies.

It has other dietary needs.

Six days have passed, since the she-wolf escaped from the pack.

In western Austria she fights the mountains.

The winds can reach up at 130 kilometers per hour -

- with a temperature of minus 30 degrees.

A few hours in such conditions can be deadly.

Without her cobble, the she-wolf could be buried in the snow.

She has to go on.

With her thick fur, she can resist temperatures of minus 50 degrees.

During the storm have piles of snow piled up -

- and the slightest tremor can cause them to fall.

Starving mountain dweller finds quickly exchanged.

Also the lamb vulture.

Its persistence has paid off.

It does not compete about the same meal as the she-wolf.

It waits patiently a moment longer -

- until she's had enough.

It is not like other vultures.

Its diet contains neither flesh nor skin.

It has its own special recipe.

First, it divides the carcass into smaller pieces.

Then it takes the chosen one treat with 50 meters up in the air...

... and throws it carefully down on the rocks. Et voilà!

Dinner is served.

Broken bones are the only thing the lamb vulture wants.

Its stomach contains the world's strongest digestive acid.

And it easily digests that, other cashiers.

The she-wolf only has a few weeks left, before she gives birth.

Driven by will to find a safe home -

- she continues to move 50 to 60 kilometers a day -

- and crosses Austria from east to west.

Over the Zillertal in Tyrol -

- she comes to Switzerland through the canton of Grisons -

- Saint Gotthard and Monte Rosa.

She crosses the impressive Matterhorn.

In a few weeks, she has covered almost 1000 kilometers.

She is now in the Mont Blanc massif, the highest mountain range in the Alps.

She is tired and weakened by the journey. She must find a place to rest.

The season changes.

The days are getting longer, and the temperature rises slowly.

Spring has come.

Because nature is the busiest time of the year.

A race against time has begun.

It's a short season to find a mate -

- and feed and raise next generation.

With only a few days left to go the she-wolf find the perfect den.

Warm, dry and close to water.

She must be away from predators.

It's the perfect place.

During the night she gave birth. A litter of six cubs.

Four males and two females.

She can't leave them alone. Many predators roam the mountains.

Foxes, crows, marten, wild boar ...

A lynx has found the wolf's den.

The she-wolf can sense the wolf, but she can't see it.

The cargo is perfectly camouflaged and can lie still for hours.

It waits for the she-wolf to leave.

The she-wolf has six mouths to feed and must go out to find food for himself.

She has only eaten grass and earthworms.

If she was with the pack -

- could she leave the kids behind in the other females -

- which would protect and feed them to her.

In every litter there is always an adventurer -

- there is more brave than the others and gets into trouble.

Lossen has given up for today, but can come back at any time.

The she-wolf knows she is trapped.

She won't get a proper one meal for a while.

Lossen also has hungry children to feed.

Like all mothers, it needs to be fed and protect her own young.

The cubs are now eight weeks old -

- and are still addicted of their mother for milk and food.

She is weaning them now, so hunting is important.

They leave the cave and explores the world around them.

The little adventurer is still the bravest in the pack.

Led by his curiosity he wanders away without warning.

The hunting instinct of the young is still untested.

They don't learn to hunt in packs, before they are almost a year old.

Now they are learning the skills by playing together.

The adventurer is exploring again.

He learns the difference on friend and foe.

The she-wolf has found a new den.

But there is still not much food.

It is the most difficult time for the family.

Six mouths to feed and not enough milk.

They are starving. The more they need, the less she has to give.

They lick her mouth -

- and begs her about gobbling up his last meal.

But her stomach is empty.

She needs a new plan.

There is a possibility that can solve the she-wolf's problems.

Sheep. They are easier to catch.

But if she wants to eat them -

- must she stand face to face with a different opponent.

This man has decided for himself to defend his sheep.

His name is Matthias Korneli.

This year, Matthias has said yes to take a bunch -

- with into the most fertile of the Alps summer pastures: Vercors.

But this lush meadow is notorious for wolves.

About 35 sheep were killed here last season.

This year, the local farmers have trusted Matthias a record-breaking -

- herd of 650 sheep to guard.

The sheep have spent the winter in shelter, but now they have to eat the soft -

- young grass on the highest pastures to get fat.

Matthias' mission is to follow them up the mountain -

- and guarded them for two months...

... and return at the end of summer with all the sheep.

No shepherd has managed that here for 20 years.

The wolves are back.

Because the she-wolf wants a sheep feed her young for a week.

But it is not easy to catch them.

The high plateaus of the Vercors -

- between the mountain ranges Obiou and Dévoluy.

Matthias is on his way to the pastures further ahead.

As companions on the mission he has two trusted teams -

- which he himself has selected and trained.

The first team is herding dogs, light and fast. The second is guard dogs.

They are powerful and strong.

Raga is a beauceron bitch. She is the most active.

She looks out for sheep, that gets away from the herd.

She does it to please Matthias.

Leo is a small Pyrenean shepherd dog. Fast and with the heart of a lion.

He does not cover such a large area as Raga.

But they can be counted on his vigilance. he overlooks nothing.

The older Kai is retired.

She doesn't work anymore, but is important for team spirit.

Soon she won't be able to make the trip up into the mountains.

Today, Matthias leads his flock out in the most dangerous area -

- where there have been the most attacks.

The locals call it the dangerous valley.

They must be on guard.

They make themselves known, as soon as they arrive.

'We are here! And we're not afraid."

The watchdogs take over their positions.

They know that in this valley is a wolf attack imminent.

Thor takes the high ground.

He sees everything, smells everything ...

... and hears everything.

Rea walks into the middle of the pack.

She is particularly attached to the sheep -

- and raise them, as if they were her puppies.

Maura takes care of the outer edges.

Sometimes she dares get far away from the pack -

- to leave its scent and challenge wolves that get too close.

And Mastin, the young Molossian, patrolling the herd's perimeter -

- often in the forest, out of the shepherd's field of vision.

The sheep are nervous. They can smell the wolf.

They don't know where she is but they know she's here.

She keeps a close eye on her prey, ready to attack on his own.

The smell of the sheep increases her hunger.

The she-wolf will not fight.

She prefers to find food without problems.

If the dogs hold their ground, she goes somewhere else.

Matthias and the dogs guard the herd together and protect each other.

They act instinctively.

This is Matthias' cobbler.

For almost ten years -

- he has guarded 15,000 sheep and only lost three of them to wolves.

He is neither for nor against that the wolves return to the heights.

For him all life in these mountains is sacred.

At the age of ten weeks the adventurer still the most active in the pack.

He can smell something interesting.

A bone from an ibex. Only for him.

Relationships are created during play. Personalities emerge.

There are leaders and there are followers.

Those who give up easily.

And some that never let go.

Determined to find a new one territory, safe and full of food -

- the coupling continues its journey.

She puts distance between herself -

- and Mathias' dogs and crosses the Vercors -

- and the Chartreuse massif and reaches the Tarentaise valley.

On unknown ground she gets the rush of something familiar.

It is not a welcoming smell. It's danger.

She goes in on another wolf's territory.

She can see that it's a big mess of a dozen or more.

And they are not far away.

Wolves defend their territory with great violence.

They kill if they see an intruder -

- and the shewolf's family is not welcome.

She doesn't know that the pack just has attacked a flock of sheep -

- from the nearby village and now the hunt is on.

The she-wolf and her family are trapped in the middle of a war zone.

She is trapped between the wolf pack and the hunters -

- and must continue into a foreign world.

They must cross the city streets, when they are quieter.

Since returning to Europe -

- many wolves have been seen in the city streets at night.

The herd has crossed the Ubaye Valley.

She has found a new and more peaceful territory, Mercantour.

It is a country without smell of humans or dogs.

It is a land of plenty.

And there is food.

A sanctuary. Her new home.

Here's another one too.

The lamb vulture.

It has returned to the rock, where it was born.

And it has started a family.

The she-wolf has succeeded to keep his family alive.

But winter is coming.

She must find a mate to secure the herd's future.

It's time to call on other wolves.

A call so powerful that it can can be heard many kilometers away.

But tonight there is no answer.

Far away a young male hears her call.

They meet in the early hours.

In just four months the she-wolf has traveled 1300 kilometers.

She left the Dolomites in winter, crossed almost the entire Alps -

- and gave birth in the Mont Blanc massif.

Then she traveled south through the Durance Valley -

- to finally settle down in the Mercantour game reserve.

Several weeks later a camera trap took these pictures.

A pack of wolves with six children and two adults.

They are the alpha couple.

And together they will raise -

- the next generation of wolves in the French Alps.

In the 20th century, the wolves were almost disappeared from Europe.

They disappeared from France, Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

There were a few couplets in the Italian Alps.

In the 1980s, the wolves expanded their area.

They reclaimed that of the ancestors territories and formed new links.

Today they are found in all the countries bordering the Alps.

Their numbers are slowly increasing.

It is estimated that 2000 wolves live in these mountains.
