and I can find my drawing stuff.

you said this was gonna be a Rainbow Room adventure.

Tobsy's Reels?

What are these?

Tobsy? Like the statue?

Tobsy isn't just a statue.

He was the person who built these towers.

That's why they're called Tobsy Towers.

We've gotta let him know that his boxes are in here.

Can we call him to come get 'em?

Well...

he was alive a long time ago, and he's passed on now.

I knew him when I was just about your age.

And when I look at this place, I can remember all about him.

Yeah. Our mom's not alive anymore.

But I like to put on her jacket

so I can remember her, too!

That's sweet, Phoebe.

I like to listen to Tobsy's reels.

That way I can still hear all about him.

Cool!

But... what's a reel?

This is a reel.

They were a way to record and listen to stuff

before people could record on phones or tablets.

Tobsy loved sharing things that were

important to him with the community.

So, he recorded lots of stuff on these reels.

Like what? Like what?

He would record his favorite music.

Sounds from the places he visited

from all over the world,

and his ideas for amazing inventions.

That means that he thought up things that no one else

had thought of before and made them.

Cool!

Which reels are the inventions ones?

Well... I don't know.

We'll have to listen so we can figure that out.

That okay with you, Pete?

Uh... sure thing.

Yarbers, let's get listening.

This is the reel to reel player.

We use it to play those reels.

Hmm.

Where do you plug in your headphones?

No headphones, just speakers.

Now, let's see what's on these reels.

[tape squeaks]

[music plays]

Wow, this sounds cool!

[imitating saxophone]

That instrument making that music is called a saxophone.

You sound just like it, Phoebe.

Now let's see what else we could listen to.

Can you hand me another reel, Jay?

Thank you.

[flute music plays]

This music is coming from an instrument called the flute.

[giggles]

I love it.

Toot, toot!

So all these reels have

different kinds of music on them?

Well, I don't know if all of them have music.

Tobsy also recorded sounds from the places he visited

and his ideas for inventions.

Oh, yeah.

Let's keep listening.

[Woman speaking French] Bonjour. Excusez moi.

O� est le caf�?

This is different than the other ones.

It's not music.

I can hear people walking and talking,

but what are they saying?

That language is French.

Ohh!

So, what's this recording about?

Will the label tell us?

It looks like Tobsy wrote the word France right here.

France is a country far away from here,

and the people who live there speak French.

Another country!

Did those sounds come from there?

They sure did.

And look, this label has a plane.

You get on an airplane when you need to

go somewhere far away.

Hey, look!

There's music notes on these labels,

and these two reels were the ones with music on them.

So, the music notes mean music reels,

and the airplane means places Tobsy visited.

This one has a star sticker label.

Let's listen to figure out what it means.

[Man speaking] Hello there. Tobsy here.

Our organ player moved away, so I made a new organ

that plays all by itself.

A self-playing organ!

Just hit the button on the side of the organ.

The organ can play by itself?

That's one of his inventions?

You'll have to hit the button and find out!

It's right over there.

[Phoebe and Jay gasp]

[click] [organ winds up]

[organ plays music]

It is playing all by itself!

This star label must mean inventions.

I wanna hear about all the inventions.

I bet there's cool stuff all over the towers.

But it's gonna take forever to listen to all the reels

to find the invention ones.

We can sort them by looking at the labels and put

all the reels with the same picture label together.

Now, that's some good thinking.

We're ready to sort now.

I drew music notes on this box

so we can put the music reels in here.

Then I drew an airplane on this box for the reels

recorded on Tobsy's airplane trips to special places.

And we put a star on this box for the invention reels.

You got some smart kids over here, Pete.

I sure do.

[Jay gasps]

[both laugh]

One last reel to sort.

Wait, wait, wait.

Look at the label.

It has a music sticker and a star sticker?

Ooh!

Two labels.

We gotta listen to figure out what it is.

Can I put it on the reel player thingy?

I wanna do it!

I wanna do it too!

[both gasp]

[player clatters]

Whoopsie.

Sorry.

Okay, now... what happened?

We were sorting the reels so that we could know

which ones were which...

and then we found this super special one.

And we both wanted to put it on the player.

So, we both grabbed it, but then we knocked it over.

What if the player is broken and we never get to hear

this special recording?

I know exactly how to fix this.

Can you help me, Pete?

Of course.

We can help, Mr. Ellis.

[metal squeaks]

[both gasp]

With a little bit of patience and a lot of imagination,

Let's put this reel in the invention box.

Yeah, you can do that.

Wow, she can skateboard.

Look at her go!

And if you're feeling hungry, but you see a sign

that says no food in this area with a red circle

and a line through it, that means you can't eat here.

? So, you can't do that.

? No, I can't do that.

But if you see a sign that looks like this,

you can eat here.

? Yes, I can do that. ?

And if you're feeling like you wanna dance,

but you see a sign that says no loud music

with a red circle and a line through it,

that means you can't play loud music here.

? So, you can't do that.

? You can't do that. ?

But if you see a sign like this,

turn up the music and dance, dance, dance.

Wow. Y'all can dance!

Mmm! Looks like yummy ice cream.

But wait! There's one more sign.

It's my first Tobsy Towers potluck tonight!

Me too.

It's one of my favorite Tobsy traditions.

Everyone always brings such tasty food to share. Mmm!

I'm making my famous potato salad. Hello!

[chuckles]

[blows into balloon]

Potato salad?

I can't wait!

It's gonna be a perfect potluck party.

A perfect potluck party.

Excuse me, Miss Jean.

What are you bringing to the potluck?

I'm bringing my not-so-famous,

but super delicious, potato salad.

[balloon squeaks]

[air hissing]

Uh... you're bringing what now?

Potato salad.

Mine's delicious.

Is that so?

'Cause I'm bringing potato salad, too.

And mine is delicious too.

[in unison] Well...

whose do you think will be more delicious?

Pete?

Uh...

Uh... I-I think I hear, a...

light bulb burning out.

I better go change it, bye!

[all laugh] [elevator dings]

Hey, is that a new neighbor?

New neighbor?

We have to meet him!

Oh, that's Mr. Marsden.

He's lived here longer than I have.

Hey there, Mr. Marsden!

Will we see you at the potluck tonight?

I'm afraid not. Sorry.

He's never joined the potluck, even once.

I wonder why.

Maybe that's just 'cause we haven't invited him yet.

Hi, Mr. Marsden.

I'm Phoebe, and this is Jay.

We are your neighbors.

Well, hi there.

All the Tobsy neighbors are gonna be

at the potluck today.

Oh, you're sweet to ask, but I never go to the potluck.

Why doesn't Mr. Marsden wanna come to the potluck?

Ehh, maybe potlucks just aren't his thing,

and that's okay.

You're probably right.

Anyhow, we have my delicious potato salad to make.

Let's get started.

Can you pass me the jar of spicy pickles, please?

It's my secret ingredient.

Whoa! There's a picture of fire on this jar.

That symbol shows us that the pickles are fiery hot.

Which is another way to say they're spicy.

Ooh, pickles.

I could use a snack.

Ooh! Ooh!

Spicy! Hot! Ahh!

[Phoebe and Jay laugh]

You can't handle spicy stuff, boy.

Quick, drink some milk.

[glugging]

Ohh!

[exhales] Whoo!

Thanks, Mama.

If I saw the spicy symbol on the jar,

I wouldn't have eaten that pickle.

[laughs]

Phoebe, sugar, can you bring me

that bowl of hard boiled eggs?

You're putting eggs in there?

I thought potato salad only had potatoes in it.

All sorts of things go into making a yummy dish.

We should call it potato, egg and spicy pickle salad.

That way people know what's in it right away.

That's what food labels are for.

These food labels tell you about what's in it.

The ingredients.

Some labels, like the fiery pepper,

quickly lets people know these pickles are spicy.

[chuckles]

Anyone who doesn't like spice knows to stay away.

Jay, baby, pass me the mayonnaise.

There's a little picture of eggs on the mayo jar.

Does that mean there's eggs in mayonnaise?

You got it.

Some folks can't eat eggs, so that picture

lets them know there are eggs in it.

But I like eggs.

Why wouldn't somebody wanna eat eggs?

Well, they might be allergic to them.

When someone eats something they're allergic to,

it can make their bodies itchy or swollen,

or even really sick.

Oh!

That's like how a kid in our class

is allergic to peanuts.

We can't bring anything with peanuts to school,

or they might get sick.

Exactly.

Eggs and peanuts are pretty common allergies.

Ooh, the potato salad is looking good so far!

We just need some crackers to crumble on top

for that extra oomph.

I know where they are.

There's a little picture on the crackers, too.

Is that a feather?

Uh, that symbol's for wheat.

It has a line through it.

Does that mean there's no wheat in these crackers?

Yep.

No gluten, to be specific.

Gluten is in wheat.

Some people are allergic to that, too.

Look, there's also a crossed out peanut on the box.

There are no peanuts in the crackers either.

Those little pictures can tell you what's not in a food too?

And then people with allergies know it's safe.

Hmm. That's pretty helpful.

Like me.

You sure are helpful, baby.

And now the potato salad is complete.

I'm coming for you, Miss Jean.

And your bird. [laughs]

Aren't you excited for the potluck?

[sighs]

I just remembered that Mr. Marsden doesn't wanna go.

I wonder why.

What if he's throwing a secret potluck just for himself?

Or... [gasps]

what if he doesn't like us?

Daddy, can me and Jay go talk to Mr. Marsden again?

Please? Please?

All right.

So long as you're kind about it.

I need to finish setting up the lobby.

I'll walk you down.

[groans]

Well, I appreciate the invitation,

but there's nothing there I can eat.

There's gonna be lots of food.

Well, I have lots of food allergies.

I can't eat eggs, wheat or peanuts.

Um... [groans]

Could you get the button for me, please?

Sure thing.

You don't have to eat that stuff, Mr. Marsden.

At a potluck, people make their own dishes,

and it's hard to know if there's something

I'm allergic to in them.

Plus...

I don't wanna hurt anyone's feelings

by not eating their food.

So, I just stay home.

But I hope you have a great time.

At least now we know why Mr. Marsden doesn't wanna go.

Yeah, but that makes me feel sad.

He's missing the fun just because he doesn't know

what's in the food.

[gasps]

What if we make labels for the food at the potluck?

Like the ones on the pickles and the mayo and the crackers?

That's a great idea!

That way Mr. Marsden will know what's in the foods

and if he can eat them.

We'll draw our labels on sticky notes

so all the neighbors can stick them

to their dishes.

Let's start by making labels for Grandma's potato salad.

There are eggs.

I will draw an egg.

Oh, and spicy pickles.

Don't forget about those.

I'll draw a fiery pepper.

There.

Grandma's potato salad is all labeled.

We'll need a lot more for the other neighbors.

Let's hurry.

Eggs.

Spicy pepper.

Peanuts.

No peanuts.

And no wheat.

I hope we made enough labels.

Only one way to find out.

[clears throat]

Hey, everybody!

Come get labels for your food.

It shows what's in it.

Woohoo! [laughs]

There's just one more thing we have to do.

[knocks]

We made labels for all of the food at the potluck,

so you know what you can eat.

And it would be really great if you could come.

Wow, how very thoughtful.

I'm still not sure, but maybe...

Well, you kids put a lot of work into making those labels.

Oh, definitely your Grandma Annie's.

It has such a nice kick to it.

Oh, no.

Definitely Miss Jean's.

It's a classic. Mmm-mmm.

Rich and creamy.

[in unison] They're both the yummiest.

[both laugh]

Hmm.

These labels tell me that this potato salad has eggs.

And this one has eggs and is spicy. Hmm.

I can't eat either potato salad.

I'm sorry.

Nothing to be sorry for.

It's a shame there isn't anything here you can eat.

[door opens]
