An EMT means emergency medical technician.

That means she goes out in an ambulance,

and helps people who are sick or hurt,

and takes them to the hospital if they need more help.

Why is she sleeping in the daytime?

Is she taking a nap?

Well, not everyone works during the day

and then comes home in the evening like I do.

Some people work all night, or even on the weekends,

so they have to get their sleep during the day.

[in unison] Oh.

And our apartments share that wall.

So, even if something isn't very loud,

she still might hear it.

Okay, Daddy.

We'll practice somewhere else so we don't wake her up.

We're far away from that wall now,

and we closed the bedroom door.

So, maybe we won't wake up Miss Dennis

Well, I'd love to hear your song,

but I'm afraid I already reserved it

for my bird group.

That's why I just flipped the sign.

It means the community room is being used right now.

So, that sign means only birds can use the room?

[laughs]

Well, that's not exactly what the sign means.

When the sign looks like this,

with the green check mark,

that means the room is open for anyone to use.

Free.

That's right!

Free means that anyone can go in the room and use it.

But when I flip it to

this side with the red X,

it means busy.

That means someone else is using the room.

[Houdini squawks]

Whoa!

Is Houdini having a bird party with his friends?

Sort of.

My bird club is using it for training,

so I'm flipping this sign to tell people in the room

that it's busy.

Oh!

So no one else will go in while the birds are in there.

Exactly!

And once our club is done in a few hours,

I'll flip the sign back to free when we leave.

Now, if you'll excuse me,

it's time to fly off and train some feathery friends.

[chuckles]

Now, we can't practice in there.

That's okay.

because we'll wake up our neighbor.

I wish there was a way for us to know

when she's sleeping and when she's not.

to ask if she's asleep,

because that would wake her up.

for when Miss Dennis is awake and free.

when the room, or Grandma, was busy.

We can use that red X

on the other side of our sign

for when Miss Dennis is busy sleeping.

And since it's her bedtime,

I'll draw someone sleeping on it too.

gave us an idea for how to tell when

Miss Dennis is awake, so we know when

we can practice.

This one has a one,

this one has a two,

and this one has a three.

That's right.

The smaller the number, the shorter it will

cut your hair.

So, a one will cut your hair very short.

Oh, and a two leaves more hair than the one.

And three is the biggest.

So, that will keep my hair long?

Yeah, you got it.

You're gonna look so slick.

I like my hair really short at the bottom.

Then a little more hair in the middle,

then the most hair on the top.

My dad was supposed to use a number three

and just cut a little bit of hair,

but he used the number one and cut it too short.

I can use the clipper guards to cut any of those styles

you see on the hairstyle poster.

That's what my hair is supposed to look like.

That's how I like it.

That's called a high top fade.
