How can we find a butterfly?

We need help.

Who knows lots about nature and stuff?

[Phoebe gasps] Miss Jean!

She loves nature.

I bet she'll know.

I just saw the most beautiful butterfly ever!

But then she flew away.

I want her to come back,

so I can see her dance again.

And maybe dance with her.

What do you know about butterflies?

Well, it is migration season.

That's when animals or insects have to travel

a long distance to find better weather or more food.

Oh! Food.

She might be hungry.

Then she needs a snack.

What should we give her to eat?

We can find out in my field guide.

It's a book that has all kinds of information about plants,

animals, and insects that live near us.

Cool.

Where's the butterfly page?

Hmm.

Good question.

Let's use the table of contents.

It shows us which pages have the information

we wanna find.

I see a 12 next to butterflies.

Butterflies are on page 12.

Right-a-roo.

Let's see now.

Here's the butterfly section.

Now we can find out what your friend eats

by looking up its name.

Um... her name?

She didn't tell me her name.

But she looks like a queen,

and dances like my favorite singer,

Queen Beja!

And Beja starts with a B,

and so does butterfly.

So I'll guess I'll call her Queen B.

Oh, I love that name.

But we need to know her real name so we can

look her up in the field guide to find out what she eats.

Hmm.

We don't speak butterfly,

so she couldn't tell us her name.

Well...

We can find out another way.

If you tell me what she looks like,

we can see which picture matches.

Can you describe her to me?

She looks perfect.

Beautiful, amazing, and colorful!

Hmm.

The field guide organizes butterflies by wing shape.

Some are like triangles and some are like ovals.

Then colors and wing pattern.

Some have spots and some have stripes.

This one's called the Karner Blue Butterfly.

The wing shape is a triangle and the wing color is blue,

and the wing pattern has...

Orangey orange spots!

[chuckles] That's right!

The field guide contains fun facts,

like its favorite food.

The Karner Blue loves to feast on Beebalm flowers.

They look like this drawing here.

So, if we find Queen B's wing shape,

color, and pattern, we can use the field guide

to figure out what snacks she might like

for her migration.

It's her for sure.

So, her wings are orange.

What else do we need?

We have to find wing shape, color, pattern.

I'd better draw a picture of her so we don't forget.

We found Queen B and made a drawing that has

everything we need to find out her real name.

Her wing shape, color, and pattern.

Excellent work.

Let's see if we can find a butterfly

in the field guide that has the same

wing shape, color, and pattern.

So, what shape are her wings?

Triangles.

Great!

Let's look for butterflies with triangle wings.

Is this the one?

Those wings are blue.

Queen B's wings are orange.

Okay!

Let's see if there are butterflies with

[gasps] Wait!

I think that's her.

Triangle wings.

Yup.

Uh-huh!

We found her.

The field guide says this butterfly's name is...

[gasps] the Queen Butterfly.

You were right all along, Phoebe.

I just knew it.

Now we need to find out what she eats

so we can make her a snack for her migration trip.

The field guide says that Queen Butterflies

enjoy Mexican sunflower.

It just so happens that I've been growing some

in the garden.

Go ahead and pick a flower.

There.

Queen B will love this.

I bet she's hungry.

She's had a busy day like us.

[Phoebe gasps]

[Jay gasps]

It's Queen B!

We did it!

Wow.

She really is a beauty.

I'm so glad the field guide helped us learn all about her.

[both gasp]

And she wants to dance with me!

Write our phone number and put the flyers up,

so someone else will see it,

call us up and bring back pup.

[girl] A lost flyer.

Somebody lost their little pup.

Let's take a tab so we can call them if we find him.

I found the pup from the lost flyer.

Let's call the number.

I always knew we'd find my pup.

We have to tell Grandma Annie

that we wanna be in the talent show.

I'm gonna sing my favorite-est Queen Beja song.

The Bunny Bop.

Hi, Grandma.

I got here way before the talent show starts.

So, I get to sing first, right?

Wait a minute, baby.

That's not exactly how it works.

You're early for the show, but everyone has to

stand in line and put their name on

the sign up sheet.

[bird squawks]

Well, while you wait in line,

do my favorite grandkids wanna help with the sign up sheet?

What's a sign up sheet?

This sign up sheet does three important things.

Here, it tells us who's gonna be in the show.

Here's where I'll write what their talent will be.

And finally, I'll know who's gonna be first,

last, and in between.

Oh, yeah.

Our teacher had a sign up sheet when everyone wanted

to play with science toys at school.

Some neighbors have already signed up.

First, Lupe and Yolo are gonna make their family salsa.

Mmm!

Next, Manny will paint his fashion pants.

Then Mr. Gurley's gonna do an exercise fitness routine.

That's a lotta talents to remember

and you haven't written them down.

Oh!

I can draw pictures next to the names to help you

remember what everyone's gonna do, Grandma.

Oh. Thanks, baby. That's a great idea.

Lupe and Yolo are making salsa.

That's spicy.

So, I'll draw a pepper next to their names.

Then a paintbrush for Manny, 'cause he's gonna

paint his pants.

And Mr. Gurley's gonna do his exercises.

So, you should draw someone stretching like this.

Ehh... ah!

[gasps] It looks like me and Houdini are next.

I hope you're ready for some yodeling.

[Miss Jean yodels]

Hmm. That's kinda like singing.

So, I'll draw a music note next to Miss Jean's name.

I'm gonna solve my puzzle cube super fast.

Just like Queen Beja does at her shows.

I know you're gonna sing Bunny Bop,

so I'll draw bunny ears and music.

Not too shabby.

Now that I know who's gonna perform

and what they're gonna perform,

I can introduce them at the show tonight.

That means we have time to practice,

just like Queen Beja does before she sings.

Um...

do you ever get nervous before you yodel?

Yeah, sometimes.

But Houdini and I make silly sounds

to laugh and relax before we perform.

[Miss Jean crows like a rooster]

[Phoebe laughs]

[howls like a wolf]

[both make silly noises]

And now we have to do the show.

Oh, well, Manny's dad just texted and said that

Manny's paints dried out.

And Mr. Gurley texted to say he needed a nap.

now it's only Miss Jean, Jaxxon and Jay before my turn.

And I still feel butterflies.

That's okay, baby.

Everyone gets butterflies sometimes.
