This exercise book has drawings

that show you what to do with your body

for the exercises.

Here's the drawing for the exercise I just did.

A forward bend.

When you put your body in the same shape as the drawing,

you know you're doing the exercise right.

you raise your arms like this.

and your arms go like this.

I gotta teach Lupe and Jay some different cool moves,

I brought the kids like you asked.

Where are you?

In my skin where I always been.

And I'm excited for a good day of gardening.

Are y'all ready to help me in the community garden?

Garden?

I've grown too many greens for us to possibly eat.

So, I'm putting them in the community share fridge.

Now, a neighbor can take some greens if they need 'em.

And another neighbor had too many baby carrots

that they didn't need.

So, they put 'em in here to share.

Y'all want a snack?

-Yes, please! -Yes, Gramma.

That's why I love gardening.

We help our neighbors...

Mmm! [crunching]

...with every baby carrot and green.

To the garden!

[Phoebe and Jay gasp]

Now, this is what I need your help with.

It's so cute!

It sure is. [chuckles]

This is the garden's first bell pepper of the season.

And in a few days, it'll be ripe.

Ripe? What's that mean?

Ripe vegetables are the ones that are ready for picking,

and this one will be ready any day now.

It'll be ripe when it turns from green to orange.

And when it's orange, it'll be sweet and ready to eat.

[laughs]

Mmm!

I love sweet peppers.

But someone's gotta take care of this

till it's ripe and orange.

And I trust you two to watch the bell pepper

for the next few days.

[gasps] So cool!

But you'll need to make sure this little bitty

bell pepper soil doesn't get too wet or too dry.

How are we gonna do that?

This is a moisture meter.

It can tell us how much water is in our plant soil,

and let us know if the soil is too wet or too dry.

What happens if it's too wet or to dry?

If there's too much water or too little water in the soil,

the pepper won't grow well and get ripe or sweet.

[gasps] Oh, no!

We need the sweet.

Exactly!

So, you gotta keep the soil moist.

Not too wet and not too dry.

When this arrow points to the red, it's too dry.

What do you think it means when the arrow

points to the blue?

Hmm.

The face in that picture looks like it's really wet and sad.

Blue means the soil is too wet?

Ahh, that's right. [chuckles]

And what about the green, Jay?

The face there looks happy.

So, maybe the green means the soil is just right?

It's moist.

Yup! Good work, gardeners.

So if the meter shows that the soil is too dry,

you need to water it with this watering can.

If the meter shows the soil is too wet, you need to...

Go get it a hair dryer!

[laughs]

That's a good guess.

Well, they don't need a hair dryer like people do.

The soil around the plant dries off in the sun.

[angelic harmonizing]

[Grandma Annie gasps] Too dry.

Just a splash.

Now y'all try.

[water splashes]

Uh... nothing happened.

It takes a while for all that water to get down

into the soil so the plant's roots can drink it.

Sometimes gardening's a whole lot of waiting.

Shouldn't we add more water so it goes faster?

That could make it too wet.

You just have to...

...wait. [laughs]

See?

Yay!

It's green.

It's moist!

Ooh!

I think the pepper looks a little more orange.

[chuckles]

Maybe the tiniest bit.

But it's gonna take a little while.

Remember, sometimes you gotta wait for something great.

But if you two keep this up, I'm sure the bell pepper

will be bright orange, ripe and ready for picking

in just three days time.

You can count on us, Gramma.

There is just one more super-duper important thing

you two are gonna need to be real gardeners.

What's that?

My gardening chair! [laughs]

Like I said, gardening's a whole lot of waiting.

And for that, you need to get yourself some shade

and a comfy spot to sit in.

A gardener has to be rested and ready for anything.

Especially...

Harold.

[animal chitters]

[squeaks]

That's Harold.

He waits till I'm all comfy, cozy in my chair,

resting my eyes, and then he... ooh!

He tries to eat my bell peppers!

[both gasp] Not the peppers.

You gotta stay focused and make sure Harold

doesn't eat my sweet baby bell pepper.

When he shows up, jump outta that chair,

flap your arms and shoo him off!

[squeaks]

Shoo, shoo, shoo!

Now...

I've gotta tend some wiley weeds in the front.

And we gotta get gardening.

[Phoebe hums]

[Jay laughs]

[Harold squeaks]

[squeaking]

Huh?

Harold!

Squirrel alert!

Shoo, shoo!

[water splashes]

Oh, no!

It's just water, Pheebz.

The soil needs water, like Gramma said.

Yeah, but Gramma said that there could be too much water.

[gasps] You're right!

It could make the soil too wet.

And that's bad for the pepper.

We gotta save it.

I know!

Let's check the moisture meter.

It can show us.

[Jay gasps] Look!

The meter shows the soil is too wet.

We have to dry it out.

And Gramma said the sun can help with that.

It's in the sun.

I'm glad it's sunny today.

I guess we gotta wait.

Time for dinner.

But what about Harold?

He goes to sleep at night.

But we'll have to be back bright and early

to protect the pepper.

And I think... the pepper is a little bit orange.

Which means... [sighs] more waiting.

[thunder rumbles]

Look at the meter.

It's showing that the pepper's soil is getting too wet.

And now there's no sun to make it drier.

What are we gonna do?

[gasps]

I know!

We can use this umbrella to stop the rain

from getting the soil any wetter.

Yeah!

And I'll put this radio under the chair

so it doesn't get wet.

We'll see you tomorrow, pepper.

Come on, Gramma!

We gotta check on the pepper.

[yawns]

Would you look at that?

Little baby pepper is almost orange.

Yay! And sweet too.

Keep up the good work.

I'll see all three of you cuties in a little bit.

That means the soil's too wet.

We gotta make it more dry.

Huh.

The umbrella helped protect the plant

Hey, he grabbed something.

Those are our leaves.

He's using them to cover the acorns.

It's like a leaf umbrella for his food.

Maybe Harold only wanted our pepper

'cause his other food got all wet.

Poor little guy.

I don't want Harold to eat our pepper,

but he is our neighbor.

And we can help him protect his food.

[whispers]

[laughs]

Now that is a ripe pepper.

We took care of this pepper all by ourselves.

I'm looking for some vegetables to finish my salad.

Our pepper would be yummy in a salad.

Do you wanna share our pepper?

[Harold chitters]

[all gasp]

about being a good neighbor.
