on this channel I genuinely attempt to

take my own advice in most situations I

try not to do the whole do as I say not

as I do mindset and uh you know I try to

be as prudent as possible with my own

watch purchases because after all I'm

giving you guys advice on various watch

purchases every day on this channel now

some of the earliest advice I ever

shared with you guys was to be mindful

perhaps weary of the caliber 1020

movement when looking at vintage omegas

okay one of the top questions comments

uh DMs I get is about vintage omegas

okay and it makes sense because Omega is

this uh prolific sought after coveted

Swiss luxury watch maker and you know

they've made many many many many watches

throughout the years some obscure some

more common but uh whether you like it

or not you know vintage omegas seems to

be a nice nice kind of um accessible

entry way to that brand and people want

to make sure they're spending their

money properly so I understand that that

a lot of people want vintage omegas and

a lot of people have questions about

vintage omegas and you know the caliber

1020 uh which falls under the Omega 1000

series of movements um they're they're

regarded as robust as uh reliable as

accurate uh but the 1020 movement

specifically is a bit finicky now

thankfully I have the knowhow and the

resources to be able to get watches

inspected and serviced and I've owned

numerous caliber 1020 omegas uh with

zero issue at all like no issues until

now it is 2:31 p.m. let's get down to

about a week ago I shared with you guys

my most recent personal watch purchase a

gorgeous Omega SE Master caliber 1020

it's the 166 series of watches uh

beautiful gold tone uh it's it's gold

filled so it's not solid gold don't

worry I'm not that much of a baller when

it comes to Vintage omegas but gorgeous

watch in great condition and I was able

to find it in my hometown of New

Hampshire absolutely lovely watch so I

pulled the trigger on it after asking

all the questions I tell you guys to ask

service history pictures uh looking at

the movement everything you could ever

want I asked and uh the seller was very

very willing uh to answer those

questions to my satisfaction so I had it

shipped over here to my Los Angeles

office and it's gorgeous beautiful watch

great condition Splendid to have on the

wrist but in the back of my mind you

know you got to think this is a vintage

watch and guys I spend time with vintage

watches day in and day out I run the

time teller shop I handpick vintage

watches for the inventory of that shop

so I am aware that regardless of the

condition of the watch regardless of how

well it's been taken care of this is a

vintage watch this watch is decades and

decades and decades older than me so

things can go wrong and this time they

did unfortunately after about a week of

use uh that watch was kind of my daily

watch for that week a beautiful week

with many memories shared with that

watch uh the date stopped cycling okay

so the date complication uh ended up um

failing which is crazy the day was

cycling just fine the date kaput so I

took it off the wrist and uh took it to

my watch maker and it's being dealt with

no problem but this does highlight the

Achilles heel of this movement so when

you take a look at this caliber 1020 uh

the Canon pinion tends to uh get loose

so that's um mean like ooh ooh get loose

I mean like it gets loose and the watch

stops telling time and the stop lever on

this watch was actually made of plastic

so that ends up eventually wearing down

and failing and the day dat complication

is very finicky and picky and some would

say fragile so many hardcore Omega

enthusiasts will tell you if you have a

watch with a 1020 movement keep it on a

Winder because you don't want to have to

keep resetting the day date complication

because that's often going to put uh

some undue wear on the movement and that

complication will eventually fail and

when you look at this watch's age you

can assume it's been set many many many

many many times now it's been taken care

of very well it's been serviced

regularly but still things will fail and

I'm its most current owner and

unfortunately you know it failed with me

but I'm having it sorted out I'm not

like overwhelmed I'm not upset it's fine

but funny because you know people think

because I'm the time teller uh nothing

ever will go wrong with my personal

collections but the truth is like I'm a

very regular mediocre human so it's it's

like the same issues that you might have

in your life I guarantee you I have as

well and um I'm not infallible and I'm

not um uh impervious to things going

wrong whether it be you know a deal gone

bad I I purchased a wash that isn't in

the the condition I thought it was uh

which is not what I think happened here

I I I got a good watch I I think U the

the seller was as honest as can be I

just think it's funny that you know

sometimes what can go bad does end up

going bad and you could make the

argument that you know I dodged enough

bullets with all the 1020s I've owned in

the past with zero issue and finally you

know I got grazed so big deal it's going

to get sorted out I think my watch maker

uh contacted me he might have to Source

a component but you know 1020 movements

are fairly common so it shouldn't be

that much of a headache and hopefully uh

by the end of the week I will have that

watch back on my wrist and I'm probably

going to end up putting that watch on a

Winder and the truth is you know I don't

think watch winders are as detrimental

to the watch as as people uh claim they

are and the truth is when you have uh

watches with specific needs like this uh

166 Cal 1020 you know it just makes

sense uh if you have a watch that is

your only watch and you wear it every

day you won't need a watch Winder

because the power Reserve is always

going to have some juice in it but if

you are a collector that likes to sample

various things then you know you're not

going to be beholden to one watch every

single day and that might mean that uh

some of the watches that you'd like to

have juice uh are going to end up dying

on you and that's perfectly fine but for

me I'm going to go ahead and pick up a

Winder and put that c Master on it

because I remember now my last Omega

CMAs Cal 1020 which was the 366 variant

uh it was on a Winder every single day

and I had zero issue with that and

actually in the last episode I mentioned

that watch the person who bought that

watch from me uh chimed in and still

owns it I think and has zero issues so

that that makes me very very happy

anyway just wanted to share with you

have a little headache with my watch in

my personal watch collection and it will
