This episode is called USS Pennsylvania, and it is obviously a reference to the

submarine that plays a very large role in the episode.

This is the very first submarine we've seen in the Walking Dead universe, and

was no small feat to create this as a set.

Action! We were looking for a really big punch at the end of episode 601, and we

were trying to figure out what kind of a weapon could provide Teddy at the end

of the season. With the ultimate means of wiping the slate clean, we decided to

see a beach submarine on the coastline of Texas. And one of the things we were

so excited about was just imagining what it would be like to be in a very

confined space that is dark, that is damp, and have walkers at every turn.

It's Morgan gearing up for battle on a practical level, but at the same time

knowing that he is going to have to access kind of that darker part of

the part that he doesn't love, but he knows he needs to do in order to

win. In the same way Teddy is unafraid of going as dark as he needs to to

achieve his own ends, we're building to the moment where Morgan and Teddy are

going to be off to each other for the first time.

Morgan... Looking at that note is, I think, in his mind, him wondering if

perhaps this is the thing he has left to do. And I think what he would interpret

that to mean is, is this his time to die? Is this the last action he's going

take in order to ensure the survival of everyone he cares about?

A lot further down than I thought.

And, you know, as he steps onto that submarine, for us as writers, our

was always that Morgan is prepared to do what it takes. And Morgan is prepared

to lay down his life to stop Teddy.

You sure got here fast.

Teddy?

Bingo. Is that you, Morgan?

Teddy is a character who likes to push people's buttons, knows how to get under

people's skin, and that, I think, ultimately is what he's trying to do

He's trying to get in Morgan's head, trying to psych him out.

Teddy has gleaned enough about Morgan's past from what he's heard from Dakota

and what Dakota's heard from other people that he knows there is a darkness

Morgan, and he's trying to kind of knock him off his game there.

Tell us where the missiles will hit.

But yeah, at the end of the day, he's just being a serial killer, you know,

Hannibal Lecter, trying to get inside Morgan's head.

I'm halfway to being one of those things.

you. Oh, come on. I know we've had our differences, but Alicia called on me to

take care of that, and that's what I'm going to do.

It was very exciting to think of this episode as leading to this team up with

Morgan and Strand.

And these are two characters who probably could not be more different.

Morgan, let go. This isn't on you.

Get him. For Strand, what he really wants out of this moment is to prove

to Alicia.

While there are good intentions to that, at the end of the day, it's rooted in

Strand's selfishness, and that's the thing that ultimately puts Morgan and

Strand in conflict as they get deeper into suffering.

If you would ask Strand if he was cold -blooded in that

moment, I think he would say he's not. He was purely being pragmatic.

There was no way they were going to get past this compartment unless...

Someone was thrown to the wolves. We saw him do something similar back in 602

when he threw Sanjay to the blockers so he could save everyone else. I think in

this moment Strand would say, someone had to die, so R .I .P. Morgan.

You know, he was a great guy. I'm sorry he's gone.

But guess what? We saved thousands of lives by stopping Teddy from launching

these missiles. I think Strand would go with that story.

The trigger!

Hey! Stop!

Stop them! We can't!

I told you it was inevitable!

For Morgan, when that single missile gets launched, even though they do stop

from launching 23 missiles that are in the submarine, it's still a huge blow

him because he had been spending all season telling himself, I am here for a

reason. The fact that he doesn't get there in time and that it's most likely

doomed really...

takes away Morgan's meaning for living.

The world is going to be a better place.

You just won't get to see it yourself.

He gave up the key because he had faith in what that baby he thought he and

Grace were going to have could do to everyone.

You know, obviously that all fell apart when the baby was stillborn. And, you

know, he knows that he may have made the wrong choice in that moment.

Even though he couldn't have possibly known where it was going to go, he's

kind of going to carry that guilt with him going forward.
