well we're here with one of Sweden's

Premier boers and he's got a rather

special bow to show us what have you got

uh yes this is the smallest uh a copy of

the smallest bow from the Mary Rose mhm

just in case you're new to this the Mary

Rose was Henry VII's magnificent

Flagship of his Royal Navy and for 44

years it struck Terror into the foes of

England until in 1545 it sank in a freak

accident whilst busy annihilating the

French Fleet in the solent

it was rediscovered in 1836 and then

again in 1971 and in 1982 it was raised

from the sea bottom in a huge difficult

and unprecedented engineering effort the

massive operation recovered 26,000 fines

including many personal items massive

cannons and the famous Mary Rose

longbows the greatest collection of

authentic period longbows we have 172 of

them preserved in the silts of the sea

it's made from a u tree MH and uh what's

kind of special about this is that it's

a very soft piece of view so even though

the dimensions are correct it's not at

all very strong uhhuh it's uh the bows

were about 120 and up and this is just

about uh I think about 80 90 lbs

something all right and yet the uh it's

not very the belly of it looks quite

Stout yes it is it's very Stout and

normally uh I get the same strength from

a bow that is about 26 mm deep and this

is 32 so it's uh and and much more

narrow as well so this is very very

elastic you very soft does that make it

a bit more sailable it is it's easier

for people to actually shoot it it's

it's a good beginner though and it's

it's a very pretty piece of you with all

the very red it's usually they come more

Brown and so you've done nothing to

stain that that's purely the way it came

off the tree is it yes so you've got

Heartwood and sapwood yes and perhaps

you'd like to tell us why they so

different uh well the Heartwood is uh

filled with tan with tannins and and uh

and uh tar-like substances right so

preservatives to stop them rotting

exactly and the sapwood is uh basically

the it grows on the surface of the of

the sap wood so this is like the first

wood that's uh it's the Young Wood yeah

towards the outside of the tree exactly

and and this sandwich is a good idea to

have in a bow because well because it's

easy basically you cut the tree you take

the bark off and you're almost there uh

you can make a ubo of only Heartwood as

well and it will work perfectly but uh

the sapwood is slightly lighter in

weight so you gain a little bit

performance when you have a lightweight

part of the bow because it it throws the

arrow and it throws the bow limb at the

same time when you when you shoot it and

if the bow limb is lighter and weight

more energy can go into the arrow all

right okay that makes sense although

what I was expecting you to say was that

uh the the Heartwood is better at

resisting compression it and the sapwood

better at resisting uh tension yeah but

that's marginally better oh resisting

tension the Heartwood is good enough at

tension uh right there are examples of

historical sa Heartwood only bows but

not sapwood only but perhaps back in the

day it also was the accepted look that a

bow was supposed to have and so that's

what everybody wanted I'm not sure I

think speed of production is uh the key

word here all right if you have good VI

the the there's not much uh there's not

much sapwood and you can produce a bow

in a matter of a couple of hours all

right from a from a saave and you've got

horn knocks on the ends of those and

these are slightly smaller than most

people make them uh because I like the

lightweight to get more performance out

of the bow and do you think they're

they're necessary on the ubo no they're

not they are Viking ubos of about 120

pounds with with self knocks but the

disadvantage then is that you have to

make the bow wider to to stand the the

the pressure of the string right and

then you have even more mass than you

would with a with a horn knock so I can

see that you've got a little Mark here

for where to rest the Arrow when you're

shooting but you have no handle no

there's not supposed to be on a on a

historical bow they didn't didn't put

handles on them and uh there is a good

reason for that though if you use a

wooden bow and the moisture changes in

the air you get differ different

strengths of the wood and it might

change the tiller just slightly and an

experienced archers will feel the exact

balance of the bow when he's pulling it

mhm and like this will feel un

unbalanced but if you're here this is

perfect and you might get drier or

something you might want to move up just

a mill millimeter or something just

slightly and get the exact feel so it's

I prefer no handle actually because I

can get it more exact than with a handle

oh okay more balanced and what have you

used for the string this is a linen

string because the bow is not super

strong mhm and it's just a twisted linen

originally I think they used hemp and

that's based on the descriptions of of

round strings that were probably glued

and it's uh you can get hemp fibers

longer than the Longbow string and then

the the loop like this was probably the

same Twisted Loop and then they went

into a probably into a glued string no

strings remains but there's one guy who

who has been able to make the strings uh

thin enough for for a arrow for a for a

marry Rose arrow and strong enough for a

war bow and that's from single H fibers

that are long and and strong enough so

whereas lyen is very strong you're

saying that uh at the top end the very

strongest bow strings would have been

hemp you think yes because the fiber

length is uh you don't need to have two

fibers joining together anywhere on the

string right and where would they get

their hemp from oh they would probably

just grow it it grows everywhere it was

grown for ropes and everything in in

Europe and uh if you grow it densely

enough you get it up to 4 M tall and

then you get fibers if you're careful

that are almost that height I see so you

get the the perfect long

fiber for it well it's a very nice bow

and some customer somewhere is going to

be very lucky yeah I hope so oh I see

you don't have a buyer for this one then

yet no it's it was an experiment so I

just wanted to see what the smallest Mar

roseb would end up with since I'm a

short guy I can't pull the 32 in that

everybody talks about in the waro all

right so I I I can do the 28 and A2

which is the one of the main Bunches of

arrows from the mar Rose were 28 and2

Ines M and I can pull that and I can but

not the 30 30.5 which is the other bunch

is the that is common I can't pull that

just my arms are too short but at least

you you pull in Imperial

measurements yeah yeah exactly it's h

just because everybody talks Imperial

measurements with bows for quite right

too

yeah so what sort of bow do we have here

this is a sherokee longbow or uh North

American longbow it's mhm Square cross

section it's made from oage Orange all

right and it's uh the surface is treated

with bare fat bare fat yes you just

happened to find some did you yes oh

that's handy yeah yeah all over Sweden

we can find bare fat no I have a friend

who went to the bare fat

Festival sorry the bare fat Festival yes

there's a bare fat Festival wow that's

specialist

yes it's killer on boots as well to just

rub the leather oh okay anyway this is

my hunting bow it's 64 65 at my draw

length of 26 right which I find still

comfortable to shoot mhm and it has uh

the advantage of the flat belly is that

you get more compressional strength so

what's the advantage of the dsection on

the classic Longbow oh it's survival

it's a the bow survival it's uh it you

know a bow is usually stronger wood is

stronger in tension than in compression

but will always fail in tension even

because if but if you have the deep

dsection it won't break on you there we

go so you say you've been hunting uh

with this but I thought that hunting was

illegal uh with Bose in Sweden it is it

is it's uh it's up for trial in the

Swedish uh natural Conservancy agency

but it's uh they haven't decided on it

yet but uh I've hunted abroad all right

with it so this one I've used only in in

uh in uh Canada but I had a similar one

slightly smaller in New Zealand before

right so that's uh I've shot a turkey

wild boar uh mountain goats mhm a feret

which is a very tricky shot well yes uh

do you find that more satisfying to the

tricky shot cuz people normally um show

off the biggest thing that they've shot

no the feret was pretty much the coolest

thing because there was a guy with a

compound hunting at the same time and he

wasted 11 arrows on the fet and he

didn't kill it and I went out and I shot

it first arrow and I had a feret all the

way from head to tail on oh you skewed

it lengthwise yes it came out of the it

was under a barrel and it just popped

the head out and I I just shot it really

quick and it went all the way in wow and

that didn't damage the fur much either I

imagine no no the perfect shot yes uh

and I've shot the rough neck grous in

Canada with this one and uh I got close

to white tail deer and black bear a

female which comes really close like

yeah it was three and a half metters or

something like that I it wasn't that

terrifying uh a little bit you could

feel the heart rates going up and so on

but uh I had my bear spray pepper spray

oh well then you're completely safe Yes

actually I'm more safe uh statistically

with a bear spray than with a gun right

because of the gun you usually wound a

bear especially they can they can keep

running if you shoot it

for at least 10 15 seconds but the bear

spray is so annoying that they run the

other way oh okay so it's it's actually

safer with a with a spray so you can

bring down a wild B with a 60 lb bow yes

no problem it went through the rib uh on

the side and through the shield there's

a c cartridge Shield right uh and

through the rib on the other side and

through the shield but I had a little

bit of feather sticking out there uh

that's it so it it died in about 10

seconds so it was just as fast as with a

with a modern Rifle right so um if you

were to

select a B for hunting you would want

nothing stronger than 60 you would

actually consider that to be somewhere

around the ideal would you yes uh

depending on for small game 340 right so

all these massive bows that we hear

about the 120b war bows that supposedly

used at Ain call they really are for

penetrating armor yes and for and that's

really the only reason that they're so

high poundage yes this will go out the

other end of a moose and you don't need

anything more right so

so as long as it doesn't have armor

you're okay probably with less than 60

okay so it' be quite embarrassing and

concerning if you met an armored Bear
