Survivor is definitely like a scary movie.

In act one of a horror film, you're just trying to survive.

You're just trying to make it day by day.

You're running from the monster.

But act two?

That's when you can flip the script.

And now...

...you are the monster.

It's time to tear this game up.

Looking around, these people have nothing on me.

I was one of the youngest

communications directors in history on Capitol Hill.

And one of my favorite pastimes

is kissing butt.

I will do whatever it takes

to put a smile on someone's face

'cause that gets you far.

The reporting world is all about connections.

It's basically a huge social game, when you're a reporter.

It's about who you know

and what they're gonna be able to tell you

before they tell their competition.

Very similar to Survivor.

So this is destiny for me.

This is gonna be the easiest million I will ever make.

I used to work for, uh, the Sydney Hotshots.

It's, uh, basically Chippendales of Australia.

Oh, it's terrible.

You know, you got a thousand women screaming your name

every single night when you're on stage.

It's just... you don't want that.

I can charm a woman. I know how they work.

I know what to say, what not to say.

And it could help me out on Survivor.

When you compare me to other 25-year-olds,

I've accomplished a lot.

When I was 14 years old,

I helped my parents file their taxes.

I was the first one in my entire family

to attend and graduate college.

And now,

I am the first person of Albanian descent

to ever play Survivor in 49 seasons.

I'm the first one.

the best players to ever play this game.

These 18 strangers will be

abandoned in the islands of Fiji.

I'm a rocket scientist,

and we just got to let this rocket burn, baby.

Usually I'm flying business class,

I'm staying in five-star hotels, I'm maxing out my credit cards.

Like, I have no outdoor skills.

In the end,

only one will remain to claim the million-dollar prize.

and it just feels like we can finally just, like,

explode and say, "Aah! We're here!"

I don't know if I'm allowed

to peel the curtain back a little bit,

but I'm, like, the male alternate for this season.

- I didn't know... - Mm.

I was gonna be on this show

till 30 minutes before I went to bed last night.

So the thing about being the alternate is,

you have to be ready for anything.

I packed three shirts--

a red one, a blue one and a yellow one.

So I'm adjusting,

and I am on Survivor 49 with all of you.

I'm Sage.

Tell me about the feeling you have right now,

that it's finally happening.

You are literally in the sand in Fiji.

Yeah, uh, something happens when I'm excited and nervous.

I pee a lot.

I've peed three times just trying

to get here today off the back of the boat.

So I apologize for anyone who saw a full moon today.

It's more of a half-moon.

I've got my mom's hips, but...

I'm from, uh, your northern friend, Canada,

uh, from a place called Edmonton.

So, how long have you been watching Survivor?

Uh, since season one, Jeff.

When I was a kid, um,

Mom and Dad would put me and my brother down

on a Wednesday night before we had to go to bed.

We'd watch the show.

Survivor's been a staple of the family.

We still talk about it to this day.

But now, fast-forward into season 49, um...

Sorry. Um...

My dad's got diagnosed with a condition called glaucoma.

And he's gonna be completely blind by the end of this year.

So this is the last season of Survivor

he'll-- he's gonna be able to see.

And I just want to make my dad proud one more time, visually,

so... Sorry.

Introduce yourself.

My name's Steven. I'm from Denver, Colorado.

And I am excited to be here.

Okay, this is not The Price Is Right.

That would be a great answer for that show.

Steven, talk to me about the moment you decided,

"I'm gonna dedicate myself to getting on Survivor."

A hundred percent.

So, my journey began with the Pearl Islands.

When I first saw all of the different contestants

from all different walks of life,

and they were so vulnerable.

And I think as you get older,

you kind of run out of first-time experiences,

and Survivor is just jam-packed

of first-time experiences.

They're gonna help you get outside your comfort zone

and give you a chance to be vulnerable.

Yes.

Never heard it put that way. Great answer.

All right.

Well, if there's one thing that's very clear

over 24 years and 48 seasons, it's this.

Survivor is always evolving.

And it's not because of the twists or advantages.

Survivor evolves

because of you, the player.

Everybody who has played this game before you

has impacted the game in some way.

And in doing so,

they've elevated the game.

Their pursuit of greatness laid the foundation

that you're standing on right now.

And each of you have your own reasons for being here--

your own drive, your own dreams,

your own story to write.

What complicates Survivor is, the minute the game starts,

all of your individual ideas collide,

because Survivor is a zero-sum game.

Only one of you will win.

But...

it is your 18 individual

pursuits of that victory,

the decisions you each make,

the risks you each take,

that will define your season.

And underneath all of this

is the heart of the paradox of Survivor.

You must and will rely on each other

in order to survive in a real jungle,

and you must and will vote each other out in order to win.

That is the beautiful

contradiction that makes Survivor so compelling,

because without that constant push and pull,

without alliances being formed and then broken,

without trust being built and then shattered,

there is no pursuit of greatness.

This is your moment.

This is your season,

and it begins right now.

Let's get to the marooning challenge.

Here's how it's gonna work.

On my go, one pair is gonna race

into the jungle

to retrieve and bring back two heavy crates.

Then the next pair is gonna swim out

to a boat with more crates

and swim that boat back.

Then when you have all your crates,

the remaining pair will use those crates

to build a cube puzzle.

Then one person will climb on top of that puzzle,

retrieve a mallet,

leap off the cube and use that mallet

to ring a bell.

First tribe to ring their bell

earns their tribe's supplies--

pot, machete, flint.

That's it.

Out here, that's a lot.

The losing tribes will have to try and earn it another way.

in the fight for supplies.

This is the real deal.

I was completely gassed.

Alex was gassed. We were all gassed.

But when Alex said, "I'll go and do this one," right away,

I knew that was gonna be my guy.

It shows he wants to take care

of his peers and partners, right?

And that's exactly what I'm looking for in a person here,

because this is a lot harder than you think it is.

And I'm learning that very quickly.

We won the first challenge, and

I was struck by a bolt of lightning.

Hina.

'Cause I'm such a viewer,

and now I am

on Survivor.

I am in the TV.

We won.

So I think morale couldn't have been higher.

And then you get to, like, the brass tacks,

which are, like, we have flint,

we have a machete, and we have a pot.

I'm a big social person,

and now we get to come to our beach,

scope out the place, and...

get to know each other.

- I work at YouTube. - Wow. Awesome.

I throw bags at the airport.

I actually am a program manager at a space engineering company.

And, uh...

I appreciate that.

I actually, uh...

This is, like, the greatest compliment I've ever gotten,

but people have called me, like, a discount Ryan Reynolds before.

- Like, so... -I do see it. Not discount.

You're never a discount.

- That's what I say. I appreciate you. - Yeah.

It's day one, and everybody

has seen my hearing aids.

And of course, there's a stigma behind wearing them.

It's a sign of old age,

or it's a sign that something's wrong with you.

Yeah. I'm super happy

- to talk about it. - Okay.

So basically, I went, like, two decades of my entire life

without even realizing that I had hearing loss.

It was so nice that my tribe immediately asked,

"Looks like you have hearing aids.

Do you want to tell us about that?"

I was dating someone at the time, and she was like,

"You never listen to me."

And I was like, "I'm trying."

And so I was like, "I'll get a hearing test to humor it."

And it came back.

They were like, "You should probably get hearing aids."

And I just remember putting 'em on for the first time.

And my first thought

was like, "Wow, the world sounds so vibrant and rich."

And my second thought was like,

how many farts did I think I got away with

that, like,

I literally did not?

Steven is

a social nerd, just like myself.

We thrive on relationships,

and I appreciate that

just because I bring absolutely zero skills

to surviving out here.

Okay, that was so fun.

I am a very adventurous person.

However,

I'm definitely a city girl.

Never been camping, and I don't like all the things

that comes with being outdoors.

Oh, my God.

I'm definitely...

I'm definitely a city girl.

The animals are already freaking me out.

Oh! I thought that--

Also,

I have a intense, an intense phobia of birds.

Oh, my God, it's one of the birds.

Okay, this is not a good time to tell you guys

that I have a phobia of birds.

There's a list of things that I probably

would be complaining about right now

that I am really, really internalizing.

And I think that is growth.

I will try to be brave, but not on day one, okay?

Coming into Survivor really thrills me.

I have a really big passion for astrology,

so I want to be the first male Taurus to ever win Survivor.

luxury things,

so this is, like, so outside of my element.

I don't really want to come across as, like,

Actually, I want to come across as really ditzy.

I'm so glad there's some colorful representation

Looking at my tribe and I'm thinking,

"This is going to be a handful, this bunch."

Is this outside of your comfort zone?

I'm a New Yorker.

Losing the first challenge, we don't get flint.

We also don't get a machete.

So we, definitely, pulling up into our new home,

we're feeling like...

I heard a crash.

No machete is rough

because when you're building a shelter,

a machete is essential

for collecting bamboo, chopping off

palm fronds.

Oh!

I just fell on my ass.

Even eating. You can't

eat without a machete. It's impossible.

You're using so much energy to rip open a coconut.

It took me, like, 35 minutes to open a coconut.

Whereas with the machete,

it might have taken me 3.5 minutes.

Yeah. What's up?

I've... Like, you're one of the only people here that I'm like,

I've had good vibes from, from the second,

- like, I saw you. - Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100%.

Getting to camp kind of felt like the first day

of high school. You know, you're a little nervous.

You're a little excited.

And then it kind of hits you.

Like, not everybody here is gonna make it to graduation.

Okay, pivot.

And I just have to make sure that one

of those people is not me.

- No, but... - I'm a big astrology person.

on my mat, I was like,

this tribe is the vibe tribe.

We are the feel-good tribe.

We're the let's-go-have-fun tribe, which is cool.

I'll buy into it for a minute, but, like,

honestly, we've already lost one challenge.

I'm trying to suss out everybody.

Hi. I'm Savannah, and I'm from Atlanta, Georgia.

As a former reporter, I think the number one skill

I have that is gonna be so useful

to me out here is my ability to build trust with other people.

What do you do?

- I'm in marketing. - Okay, awesome.

But I'm not telling anyone out here

that I used to work in news because

I don't want to be perceived as someone

who is good with their words.

My goal out here is to just focus

on these one-on-one relationships

and hope that that serves me well.

Uh, my name's Nate. I am from Los Angeles. I am 47.

Uh, right now, I'm a stay-at-home dad,

and I used to do, like, film and television production. Uh...

Can we ask what you, like, worked on?

It's, like, my first PA job

was on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2.

What?

Yeah, I've done a lot of stuff like that.

I don't know why I'm so excited.

The biggest reaction I got from my job was from Jawan.

He thinks I was just a production assistant.

And the truth is,

I produce films, including films for Marvel Studios,

like the Black Panther and Captain America franchises.

But my goal is to minimize as much as I can

what I do.

What do you guys know about building the shelter?

- So little. -Because

people will think of any reason to vote you out on this show.

That might spell the end of my game.

Everybody going into Survivor,

like, dreams of getting

those supplies up front because

it's such an advantage.

And we know Rizo's, like, trying

to pull one through for the team, but, like,

those first bonding moments are so crucial.

Can you pull it that way, Jawan?

And like, as we're building the shelter,

I'm trying to suss out who is somebody that

I can be--

oh, God-- 100% honest with.

Oh, I'm good. I just had to burp.

Yeah.

But the top person

that I'm really getting that vibe from

is Shannon.

- Yeah. - I feel likewise with you.

- Like, soul sister vibes. - The signs are there.

Yeah.

I am loving these initial vibes.

The huge part of my game is being adaptable

and feeling into people.

I run high-vibe women's events in Boston,

but I didn't grow up with any spirituality.

It was, like, Fenway Park as church.

- You're doing great. - Yeah?

- And you're here for a reason. - You're so sweet.

Now, I have this one side

that's kind of like Boston, Donnie Wahlberg,

and this other side that's kind of like Stevie Nicks,

and you mix the two.

And I have this spiritual connection,

which guides everything that I do in my life.

With my tribe, I can love them,

and I do, and they feel that.

But I also am recognizing

that I am going to have to cut them at some point.

I just need to figure out when is it time to attack,

and who am I attacking?

We lost,

and Jeff says, "Choose one person

to battle for supplies."

"A one-on-one battle to prove your worth."

So, I stepped up to the plate.

- How's it going, man? - Rizo. Alex. Nice to meet you.

Pleasure.

So, the athlete in me is like,

"Give me the ball. I want the last shot."

I was ready for the challenge, and I was ready

to prove my individual worth.

"It's day one of Survivor 49,

"and both your tribes have already

"suffered their first defeat.

"Here's your chance to prove your individual worth.

"Each player must race onto the peninsula

"to find ten coconuts marked with your emblem.

"Bring them back one at a time.

"Once you have all ten, open the coconuts

"and use the pieces inside to solve a puzzle,

"revealing the location of a ship's wheel.

"Retrieve the wheel and use it to crank your flagpole.

"The first player to raise their flag to the top

earns their tribe supplies."

- All right, good luck. Let's see what happens. - Yeah.

When I stepped up for the challenge,

I told my tribemates, "If it's a puzzle,

we are cooked."

And in big bold letters,

it says "puzzle pieces."

And in my mind, I was like,

"Damn it, Rizo.

Why did I do this?"

One, two, three. Go.

We have to find ten coconuts

with our tribe colors on 'em

in this huge field.

And honestly,

I'm really good at cardio.

I do the elliptical every day.

So being able to do this, like,

distance type of running was not a problem.

It was exhausting, but I was able to,

like, get into a groove.

I look over at Rizo.

He's struggling.

Alex is smoking me.

One, two, three. Nine, ten.

This guy's already found his coconuts before me.

And he's already opening up his pieces to the puzzle

while I'm still there

huffing and puffing, trying to find my coconuts.

No.

And I'm already feeling down in the dumps 'cause I know

my puzzle abilities.

On a scale of zero to 100,

it's negative 100.

And all I see

is Alex flying through this puzzle.

I quite honestly

love jigsaw puzzles.

That's right. That's right.

Okay, let's go.

Of course I'm looking over

at what Rizo's doing, but I have a lead

and it's a pretty comfortable lead.

All right, let's cook.

Oh, boy. Damn.

That's there. Treasure map.

- Let's go. - Oh, he's cooking.

I look over, and Alex is two pieces away

from being complete.

I suck at puzzles.

All right, you know what? We're doing it that way.

So, I brought all of my pieces,

stacked them on top of Alex's pieces,

and then just come one by one, bringing it to my board

and fitting the pieces to the puzzle.

Ooh.

Give it... All right, good boy.

Yeah.

Alex actually

plopped his body on top of the table

so I wouldn't see.

And I'm like, "Dang it. I almost had it."

But he proceeds to leave again,

and then my joy comes out again.

I'm like, "Oh, my God.

He didn't break it. I'm going to cheat again."

Oh, yes. Oh, my God, I'm a genius.

What am I missing?

Dude, he still has not found it yet.

So I start digging in multiple spots.

And now, I'm starting to get exhausted.

The elliptical did not prepare me for this.

And I see Rizo's over at my puzzle, looking at the pieces.

There's an X marks the spot,

and luckily, Rizo's spot is different.

But still, how can he not

get the pieces together when he's literally

putting them piece for piece exactly over mine?

What am I missing? Hmm.

Looking at this puzzle board,

something doesn't seem right.

Something is missing.

Hmm.

This is where we run into a little bit of a problem.

'Cause I'm either missing pieces...

And as I'm digging,

I strike something hard.

It felt like winning the lottery.

I felt like, "Oh, my God.

I found the ship wheel."

And with everything I had inside...

...I pulled the ship wheel out of the sand.

That five-second Survivor moment

of raising the flag

from the bottom to the top

meant everything to me.

Oh. Oh, my God.

I am in utter shock.

I did it.

I had the biggest lead. It's painful,

and it hurt my pride.

- Great job. - No. I appreciate it.

I wasn't supposed to win this challenge,

but I never quit.

I thought about

everybody I was doing it for.

My girlfriend, and, like,

just doing everything for my parents and

for everybody in Albania.

And I'm so proud of myself, man.

I wish I could hug myself, but that's weird.

I'm so proud

that I stepped up to the plate.

This is up there for the best moment of my life.

I cannot wait for an aqua dump.

She is somebody who says exactly what's on her mind.

And what's on her mind is usually fun

and really entertaining, but it's also clear that

we're in a game that requires secrecy.

And I'm not sure that's a great quality

for this particular game.

Our boy Rizo-- he holds up

I don't think I've ever seen something

so beautiful in my life.

And that freaking pot and our flint and our machete.

I'll tell you this much.

My boyfriend, when he sees how happy I am

about the pot, flint and machete, he's gonna be like,

"I've been spending how much on our dinners? What?"

I don't even believe I'm here right now anyway.

-Badass moment. - I like, I actually don't want to cry, but like...

I think... I think about,

like, my family immigrated from Albania.

My parents were both arranged, they literally didn't

- know each other, they both moved to this country, - Wow.

got married, had me,

and I'm from Yonkers, New York.

Grew up in a 500-square-foot apartment with one bedroom.

My parents both custodians, they clean for a living.

Uh, my mom does it for a high school

and my dad does it for, like, a hotel.

And they always told me, "Rizo, like,

"we came to this country and we want you to live

- your American dream." - Wow.

I just thought about it, and I thought

about making you guys proud.

I thought about making my brother, my mom and dad

and everybody at home proud.

So I didn't want to let you guys down.

Getting to have an iconic moment,

it's something you dream about.

And now it's stamped that the man, the myth, the legend,

We're gonna have the most energy today that we have.

You know, it's gonna keep steadily going down

- Yeah. - And a couple of us can go look for bamboo

and palm fronds before, like,

everything gets super hot. So...

I'm an entrepreneur, and I'm the front person

in a band, and so,

as part of running a company and running a band,

I tend to want to boss people around.

You got it all figured out, girlfriend.

Yeah.

I'm 49 years old, and so,

people are gonna think certain things about me,

because I'm old, you know,

compared to the 20-year-olds out there.

But I've done a ton

of really physically demanding things in my life.

You know, I've done mountaineering.

I've done Ironmans.

I've done multiday adventure races.

I've never done a competition

that involves a social component before.

Annie, come with us.

I just think it's dumb to isolate yourself.

I love Annie's energy.

I think she's, like, a kind person.

But when you're spending time alone,

if you're not building those relationships with people,

really is creating a bond between us.

going far in this game with.

I really wanted to work with someone who no one would expect.

And so, I feel like

I'm in a good spot

because I also have this solid alliance with Jake and Sophi.

to be thinking in my head,

who is gonna be the most loyal to me down the road.

Yeah. No, I mean, honestly,

yoga, meditation, breath work.

I was not into the woo-woo breath work stuff.

We can't just be feel-good vibes all the time.

Like, this is gonna get real at some point.

Any time your mind starts to wander,

just come back to the breath with a lot of love.

But now, I'm realizing, underneath that layer

of feel-good meditation, she's smart.

I know she's out here playing a game.

we won our first challenge, but

that's all gonna come crashing down at some point.

My first impression of you, I wasn't sure

But at the same time, it's like, "Do you actually like me?

I'm starting to feel a little bit paranoid,

but it might just be social anxiety

because I was always the smallest kid.

I was four-11 until I hit my growth spurt,

which was halfway through high school.

So I grew up being bullied, being picked on,

not feeling like I 100% always belong.

And so I carry a lot of imposter syndrome,

and that's, like, the fear that's kind of

bubbling up inside of me.

What if I'm the first person that they all, when I'm gone,

are like, "We got to get rid of Steven"?

And, uh,

that's really tough.

How are we gonna decide if we have to vote someone out? Like,

- who would we even do? - It's too early to pick.

I'm gonna be honest, there's a part of me

that's still back in that high school

feeling like I don't belong.

I just want to feel accepted.

They just have so much in common,

but it does not scare me for alpha males to work together.

In fact, I actually want

to work with those alpha males

because they're shielding me and they're never gonna

see me as a threat, even though I am a threat.

They just don't know it yet.

So, before I left, my wife wanted to give me a special pair

But when my tribe called me Dad for the first time,

the only thing I saw was a big, flashing

red alert that you are older than these people,

and they know it.

We should try to get coconuts and maybe a couple papaya

- and get some calories. - Yes, 100%.

But I don't want to be on the outs in this tribe.

And I got to figure out how to build relationships with people

who aren't going to gravitate towards me naturally,

especially knowing I'm already

the oldest person here.

Feeling pretty good. How you feeling?

Good. Is there anything,

like, in particular on your mind?

The rubber's gonna hit the road at some point.

It sucks 'cause I do like everybody,

but at some point we got to go, "Okay, but

- who do you want to go into battle with?" - Yeah.

As a producer who's made movies in the superhero genre,

I've seen teams being formed,

and those best teams are the teams

that bring different things to the table.

You don't want two Captain Americas in the same team.

You want Captain America and Iron Man

because they're gonna do things that complement each other.

And that's a little bit how I'm looking at this game.

- I know that you're thinking about the game, too. - Yeah.

And I would want to work with you moving forward.

I think Rizo's very strong. I think he's stronger

Being the oldest of five kids, growing up

in a single-parent household,

I'm so used to being someone that provides.

I'm having trouble doing it.

It's just frustrating letting people down.

I see this frustration, and I'm like, "Okay,

"this is feeling a little bit,

um, extreme for just starting a fire."

That's extremely concerning to me

And it seems like it's because of either

Both of them did terrible.

After the loss of the challenge today, it was

a little bit awkward because, like, we're all

looking at each other and we're kind of sussing out, like,

who is gonna be the first person to, like,

name somebody or pull off into, like,

a different group to start strategizing.

We all know that we have to go to Tribal tonight,

and to have to send somebody home first,

there's just, like, a knot in my stomach.

Just got real.

Yeah, do what you need to do, guys.

Game plan coming back is, we got to get rid of the weak.

We have to be a better team.

I love Nicole. I think she's great.

I genuinely think we'd be friends outside of here.

She's isolating herself a lot.

But the overall consensus is, Nicole's the vote.

because I thought Annie

was most closely aligned with me.

But with Annie throwing my name around,

I really don't know if I can trust her.

I think it could be very possible I have to vote her out.

Like, are we just gonna give it all up with her?

This should be so simple. We should be able to just

go in strong and vote out Nicole and be done

and be back at camp tonight.

and make sure that, moving forward, they stay true to us?

So let's get into these first few days.

Jake, you start this game with strangers.

You don't know if anything they're gonna tell you

about themselves is even the truth,

but you immediately head off into a jungle

and begin to build your life.

What is that like?

It's an absolute crazy concept, Jeff.

And you're right, we are strangers,

but we turn into a family instantly

when we get to the island.

And it's working for us.

We absolutely love each other.

We'll get into that.

So, Sophi, is it just human nature to say,

"Okay, this is literally my tribe.

- I must make this work"? -Yeah.

And actually getting to the camp for the first time

kind of felt like this weird speed-dating situation.

Like, you're trying to find these

connections with everybody.

But you never know. It's Survivor.

So you might think you're somebody's number one,

and you're working with people,

but you're actually just their side chick.

And I...

I've been there, done that, Jeff.

I'm not interested here.

So I'm trying my best to really rely on those people

that I feel like I did connect with,

but there are people who have those closer connections

than others, and someone has to go tonight.

And I'm just hoping that that's not me.

Nicole, one thing that typically happens

when you have a new group is, people take on roles.

Sophi clearly can bring a sense of humor.

Did you notice that happening?

100%.

So you have, like, Mr. Happy-Go-Lucky.

He's just, like, good vibes,

just, like, a nice person.

to sail away to the end of this game

Our biggest focus is, we don't want to lose again.

And we need to be strong.

And we've agreed to vote out the weakest player.

And so how do you compare

two weaknesses amongst two people?

And, like, how do you determine

which one is weaker than the other?

So you're saying that you've got it down to two people?

And the person who is going to be voted out,

they have no idea

because they also think that they're part of the majority.

I do know whose name I'm writing down tonight.

Like, we are a tribe, so we got to get past this point

and start winning to get to the merge,
