That entire region of islands is a treasure chest

for ancient mysteries
and mythologies.

NARRATOR: The Pacific Islands boast
dozens of towering stone structures.

HUGH NEWMAN: It is fascinating
that there's so little landmass,

and yet cultures were building
gigantic megalithic sites.

NARRATOR: And countless local
legends tell of otherworldly visitors.

The Pacific Islands
are littered with rock art

of giant beings with enormous
hands and feet that have

six fingers and six toes.

Could it be that the islands of the Pacific

hold the remnants
of a lost alien civilization?

We have to wonder if there were extraterrestrials

on some of these islands.

In the western Pacific Ocean, spread out

over three and a half
million square miles,

is a vast region
of more than 10,000 islands.

Often referred to as Oceania,

these remote islands
are separated by great distances

and inhabited by
a diverse group of people

descended from various parts
of East Asia and South America.

While unique in many ways,

the islanders share
many of the same traditions

and cultural practices
that go back thousands of years.

ANDREW COLLINS:
Oceania includes the areas of Austronesia,

Melanesia, Micronesia,
and Polynesia,

This is made up
of not just hundreds

but thousands of islands,
all of which are interlinked

by peoples who could navigate

from one corner of it
to the other and back again.

And this tells us that
there was a maritime culture

that existed possibly as much
as 5,000 years ago.

Traditionally,
in archaeological terms,

it's said that people came,
possibly, from the Americas.

Other people say they came over
from various parts of Asia.

But what's interesting is that
these islands share

connections going back
tens of thousands of years,

which suggests, somehow, they
had contact with each other.

DAVID PALAITA: In Oceania, we have
what we might call this ocean lens.

This ocean lens we call va sa.

"Va" meaning
"the space that relates."

We're talking about
interconnections between people.

Between people and land.

Between people and the cosmos.

Between people
and inanimate objects,

like stones or monoliths.

Those, too, are living entities

that are part
of our cultural world.

The concept is an ancient one.

Something that our communities

across this region have lived by
for so many centuries.

NARRATOR:
For the people of Oceania,

integral to their history
and cultural identity

are the massive stone monoliths
and megalithic structures

that can be found
on many of the islands.

While mainstream
archaeologists believe

most of these structures
were built

within the past 2,000 years,

the indigenous people suggest

the megaliths are from
a much earlier time,

when legends say
their ancestors shared

these islands
with non-human entities.

An example can be found
on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Located in the
northeast corner of Oceania,

this popular tourist destination

features one of the largest
ancient megalithic structures

in the Pacific Islands.

Called Pi'ilanihale Heiau,

this massive temple
on Maui's east coast

covers an area of more than
130,000 square feet.

Pi'ilanihale Heiau
is 341 feet wide.

It's up to 50 feet high.
It has different levels.

And it's almost like a pyramid
platform type structure.

NARRATOR: While many scholars
date the construction of this temple

to the 13th century AD,

Hawaiian oral traditions suggest
Pi'ilanihale Heiau

is many centuries older.

But why would
the ancient people of Hawaii

build such a massive
stone structure?

One capable of withstanding
the earthquakes

that occur frequently
on these volcanic islands?

WILLIAM HENRY: One thing that's
interesting about this temple in Maui

is that it was where
the indigenous people went

to meet and greet the gods.

What's further intriguing
about this is that,

scattered all across Oceania,
are sites just like this.

TSOUKALOS: These structures are
connected to so-called sky gods,

celestial deities, interacting
with the local people.

Gods that have risen
from the sea

and descended from the sky.

NARRATOR:
Today, only a few dozen heiau,

like Pi'ilanihale, still stand,

but experts say
that there were once thousands

of these temple structures
throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

And what ancient
astronaut theorists

find intriguing is that
the native Hawaiians

say the architects of these
temples were not humans.

COLLINS:
What's so interesting is that,

according to local tradition
on Hawaii,

the builders of these temples,

these heiaus, were actually

a race of dwarves
referred to as the Menehune.

NARRATOR: The ancient legends of
Hawaii say that beings of small stature

called the Menehune
inhabited these islands

long before
the first human settlers.

The Menehune
were created by the gods

to serve as their messengers
and to perform tasks.

PAMELA SMITH:
According to ancient Hawaiian stories,

the Menehune were said
to have had magical abilities,

and that they created a lot of
the megalithic structures there.

And it's thought that they came
from somewhere else

and they were there
before the humans.

The Menehune worked at night

because they didn't want
to be seen.

They built canals and gulfs
and roads overnight.

While skeptics think
that the Menehune

are just fictional,
there was, in 1820,

a census done in Hawaii,

and 65 people claimed
to be Menehune.

PALAITA: There are many oral
traditions across different villages

that talk about Menehune
that are able

to actually travel
into the underworld.

And there are interconnected
cave systems below the sea

in which these folks appear
in another place across Oceania.

HENRY:
The Menehune are interesting because we find

similar stories
spread throughout Oceania

of small people helping to build
these megalithic temples.

NARRATOR: Is it possible that the
ancient Hawaiian traditions are true,

and that the megalithic temples
found throughout the islands

were built
by non-human entities?

And if so,
could they have been more

than simply places of worship?

According to ancient
astronaut theorists,

their platform shape
might offer an important clue.

JASON MARTELL:
Many of the megalithic platforms

almost look as if they're built
as a large landing platform.

And it really makes you wonder

if a lot of these
ancient platforms

were built for beings
that have the power of flight.

HENRY: Local legend says that
they're essentially platforms

where people would go
to meet visitors.

So, we have to be open to
the possibility that these were

places where actual visitors
from the stars came down.

They were landing places
where people went

to meet extraterrestrials.

Could it be that Pi'ilanihale Heiau

and other platform
structures like it

that exist throughout Oceania

once functioned as landing pads
for otherworldly visitors?

As far as ancient astronaut
theorists are concerned,

it's a distinct possibility,

and they suggest

further evidence
of alien contact in Oceania

can be found by examining
the remote Marquesas Islands

and the story behind
their mysterious tiki statues.

2,300 miles south of Hawaii

lie 12 islands
that make up the Marquesas,

one of the most remote
island groups in the world.

Today, this archipelago is home
to just over 9,000 inhabitants,

but centuries ago,
the Marquesas boasted

ten times as many people.

NARRATOR: With the population decimated,
dense vegetation has overtaken

many of the ancient sites
on these islands,

making them a treasure trove
for new discoveries.

One such example
is the archaeological site

of Kamuihei
on the island of Nuku Hiva,

first excavated in the 1990s.

NARRATOR:
Two large stones at the ancient site of Kamuihei

are covered in petroglyphs
depicting human figures, canoes,

concentric circles, fish,
and various animals,

the most significant of which
are three turtles.

To the people of the Marquesas,
the turtle is a powerful symbol.

TSOUKALOS:
Now, what's so interesting

is that many of the ancient
creation stories talk about

that life originated by a cosmic
turtle flying through space.

All of First Nations people
here of the Americas

talk about this cosmic turtle.

Japanese culture talks
that the entire universe

rests on the back
of a cosmic turtle.

In Guatemala, there are carvings

of so-called
giant flying turtles

that once existed there.

Now, if you look
at some of these artifacts

that were found there,
they look like turtles,

but they're not,
because the head of that turtle

is a guy's face inside
a turtle's head with goggles.

To me, that's another example
of misunderstood technology,

because whatever our ancestors
witnessed up in the sky

could best be compared
to a turtle.

And if you look
at modern-day UFOs or UAPs,

they have that weird,

whether it's a disc shape
or an oval shape,

if you know nothing
about technology,

well, what's that closest to?
A turtle body.

NARRATOR: Could it be that
the ancient people of the Marquesas

associated turtles
with the realm of the gods

because they witnessed
turtle-shaped craft

descending from the sky?

Perhaps further clues can
be found by examining figures

that the Marquesas
share in common

with numerous other
Polynesian Islands: the tiki.

You find tikis in Aotearoa
in New Zealand.

Maori people carved them.

Uh, Hawaiians
carved them as well.

You might find them in
Micronesia, Tonga, or in Samoa.

You have different variations.

It's thought that
the tiki statues

originated
in the Marquesas Islands.

It was part of their tradition,
part of their culture.

These are thought to be
the deified ancestors

of the people of this area.

They're almost like
living beings.

COLLINS: Tiki statues are
on the edges of sacred enclosures,

generally facing outwards
to install fear

in anybody that looks upon them.

The reason for this is to say,

if you are entering inside
these sacred enclosures,

you know, respect the place.

NARRATOR:
While explanations for who the tikis represent

can differ from one
island group to the next,

they are most often associated
with ancient ancestors

and various deities.

But in the Marquesas,
the carvings are all meant

to depict one specific figure.

The lore has it
that tiki was the primary

ancestor and creator
of Nuku Hiva.

He was created in the image
of the sky god.

And so, the local people
made statues in honor

of their creator god, tiki,
and used them in worship.

TSOUKALOS: What's so fascinating
about these statues is that you have

these giant goggle eyes

and gigantic heads.

They're very similar
with depictions today

that some people report
with the so-called Greys.

We are looking
at the otherworldly beings.

They're right
in front of our eyes.

NARRATOR:
For ancient astronaut theorists,

another curious aspect
of the tikis

is the idea that they possess a
mysterious power called mana.

COLLINS:
Mana is like a sort of life force.

But it was also something
that was seen

to have, like, a consciousness
in its own right

and that only the rocks
in certain regions

were said to have this power.

So if you transferred this rock

to where you were gonna build
your temple,

then you would be transferring

divine power
from one place to another.

TSOUKALOS:
This concept of mana is something that permeates

all of Polynesian culture.

It doesn't matter
what culture you go to-

they all speak
of this mana power.

And the question I have is

is it rooted
in some type of technology

that our ancestors
didn't quite comprehend?

NARRATOR:
Does the story behind the tikis,

along with
their unusual appearance,

provide further evidence
that the islands of the Pacific

were a place of ancient
extraterrestrial visitation?

Perhaps further clues
can be found

by examining another location

that has profound ties
to the Marquesas:

Easter Island.

NARRATOR:
On the far eastern edge

of the vast region
known as Oceania

lies the island of Rapa Nui.

More commonly known
as Easter Island,

this remote location has become
famous around the world

for its iconic moai statues.

Like the tiki found
on other Pacific Islands,

the moai are thought
to be imbued

with the mysterious power
known as mana.

Nearly a thousand
of these strange sculptures

dot the coastline,

some standing over 30 feet high.

NEWMAN:
The moai statues have

a specific style
of these kind of long faces...

...with bellies with hands
going around the side,

touching the navel,

often with elongated fingers.

And some of them
are beautifully carved

and have intricate, almost,
like, tattoo-like carvings

down the back of them.

PALAITA: There have been archaeological,
anthropological debates over

how they were constructed,
how they got there,

and the function.

And as someone
that's also navigated the seas,

in many different voyaging
societies across Oceania,

the moai, to us,
were sort of a way

to help us navigate
across the ocean.

So Rapa Nui is
the very end of Oceania.

And so canoes coming in
from, say, South America,

moai, you could see
from far away

at the time that we're coming in
and out of the region.

NARRATOR:
While the moai have served practical purposes

for people navigating
the open ocean,

just who or what they represent
is largely a mystery.

But according to
the local Rapa Nui legends,

the moai depict strange visitors

who inhabited
the islands long ago.

VIEIRA: The moai are believed
to represent these ancestors...

...that the ancient people
encountered.

The traditions clearly state
in Easter Island

that giants are the royal class.

The priestly class of
Easter Island in ancient times.

NARRATOR:
Could the moai have been inspired by giants?

And if so,
where did they come from?

According to the ancient stories
of Easter Island,

the answer is provided
by seven moai

that stand on a sacred platform
known as Ahu Akivi.

YOUNG:
The moai at Ahu Akivi are the only ones

that are facing toward the sea
out of the 887

on the island.

Those seven
are thought to represent

the seven brave explorers
who came to discover

this new homeland
for the people.

NARRATOR:
The seven moai on the Ahu Akivi platform

face directly toward
the Marquesas Islands,

roughly 2,300 miles away.

It was said that they
represented divine ancestors...

...that came
from the island of Hiva.

And this we can connect
with the Marquesas Islands.

So what exactly was going on
in the Marquesas Islands

before the creation
of the first moai statues?

NARRATOR:
Is it possible that strange giant beings

once inhabited
the Marquesas Islands

and migrated to Easter Island?

Could this be what the moai
are commemorating?

Ancient astronaut theorists
say yes

and suggest
the story of the moai

may also shed light
on the power of mana.

The energy

of the mana

was said to have been
transferred to Easter Island

from Hiva.

And this divine force
that was seen to embody

these moai statues
with an energy

that was said
to bring alive the statues.

It was said
to give them consciousness.

YOUNG:
One of the ancient names of Easter Island

is "Eyes Looking to the Sky."

And this refers to the pupils

in those great stone statues,

which were put
in place of obsidian

or coral or red scoria.

And when the statues had pupils,

they came to life,

imbued with mana
to have supernatural powers.

NARRATOR:
According to the ancient stories of the Rapa Nui,

the power of mana was even used

to move the giant statues
into place.

YOUNG:
Legend holds that a great king,

Tuu Ku Ihu,

was given the gift of mana
from the great creator god,

and used the power of mana

to command that
the great stone statues walk.

TSOUKALOS:
Since the dawn of time,

the people of Rapa Nui
have maintained

that the way with which
the moai were moved around

was through a power called mana.

However, according to
the ancient astronaut theory,

the idea is that mana was
a misunderstood technology.

Because the fact
that we have stories

where these gigantic blocks
were not dragged across the soil

but flown through the air,

to me, indicates
that there had to have been

some type of a technology
behind it

that our ancestors witnessed

and thought that it was magic.

NARRATOR:
Could it be that the ancient concept of mana

was inspired by some type
of advanced technology

that was witnessed by people
throughout the Pacific Islands

thousands of years ago?

Was this region once the home

of an extraterrestrial
civilization on Earth?

Perhaps further clues
can be found

by examining the Pacific
Islands' most mysterious

and astonishing megalithic site.

The island of Pohnpei,

Micronesia.

Here, just off the island's
southeastern shore,

the ruins
of an ancient civilization

rise from the ocean.

This complex known as Nan Madol
covers 19 square miles

and is built from hundreds
of megalithic basalt columns

that are stacked
nearly 30 feet high.

Nan Madol is sometimes called
the Eighth Wonder of the World.

It is a gigantic area
built into the ocean

of about 100 artificial islands.

And those artificial islands
are created

by taking huge pillars
of basalt.

The largest of these
big basalt logs and rocks

is said to weigh 80 tons.

And they pile these up

and then they make these, like,
Lincoln Log structures there.

And some of them
are 30 feet high.

NARRATOR: The island city was
once a hub for the Saudeleur dynasty,

which ruled the region
from 1100 to 1628 AD.

THOMPSON:
Nan Madol seemed to have been

a major center
for the Saudeleur dynasty,

which is a major trading network
and empire.

On the other hand,
we have evidence of,

a thousand years earlier
or more,

people living in this site
and working this site.

We know very, very little
about the origins of Nan Madol.

First thing that anybody
would think about

is why do they build it there.

NARRATOR:
What purpose Nan Madol served remains unknown.

And equally mysterious
are the questions

of who built
the towering stone structures

and how did they accomplish
such an astonishing feat.

To say that Nan Madol
was not an easy thing to build

would be an understatement,

especially when you consider

that they would have been
dependent upon canoes

for transport of things.

And access to the only known
source of these columns

is very remote.
It's very high up.

It's very difficult to get
to the columns themselves.

And transporting them
would have been difficult,

stacking them,
building with them-

every aspect of it would
have been incredibly difficult.

TSOUKALOS:
It is said that

the basalt columns
that were used at Nan Madol

were brought in from the other
side of Pohnpei Island.

Now, when you ask
the local population

how did Nan Madol
come into existence,

they immediately go
to an ancient mythology

that speaks
of these two brothers

who descended from the sky,

Olosohpa and Olisihpa,

who allegedly built Nan Madol.

CHILDRESS:
The islanders say that all

of this 250 million tons
of basalt

was flown across the island

and then put into place.

You know, you have
to wonder, you know,

is this all connected
to extraterrestrials?

NARRATOR:
Could Nan Madol's unique construction be evidence

of extraterrestrial technology,

as some ancient astronaut
theorists suggest?

Perhaps further clues
can be found

by examining
another local legend.

This one says
that hidden beneath Nan Madol

is an even older
megalithic site.

A fascinating legend says
that Nan Madol is built on top

of a former city that was there
called Kanamwayso.

And the legend says
that Kanamwayso existed

thousands of years ago.

It was inhabited
by an advanced race

that had spectacular
engineering skills,

advanced engineering skills,

and that they ultimately built
Nan Madol.

NEWMAN:
Some scuba diving that was done there found

that, quite deep
under the water,

there's evidence
of these columns being stacked

and placed in certain areas.

So it's highly probable

that the whole complex
was much larger

and stretched further
off the island

and now is submerged under
the sea in the same location.

NARRATOR:
Numerous ancient cultures around the world

recorded accounts
of lost civilizations,

like the famous lost continent
of Atlantis

that the Greek philosopher Plato
wrote about

in the fourth century BC.

But while most researchers
suggest

that Atlantis would have been
located somewhere

in the Atlantic Ocean,

another lost civilization
is said to have existed

in the Pacific
that is known as Lemuria.

CHILDRESS:
The idea of Lemuria is that,

12,000 years ago,

when, uh, the ocean levels
were 300 to 400 feet down,

many of these island groups,

rather than being
many different islands,

it would have been
one continent.

VIEIRA:
The traditions tell us

that there was
so much megalithic building

around the Pacific Islands

because it is
a transfer of tradition

from a lost continent, Lemuria.

So you have this ancient idea
of a lost continent.

And they transfer the know-how

and the ritual
of megalithic building

to all these cultures
in the Pacific Islands.

HENRY:
If Lemuria did exist in ancient Oceania,

then perhaps this is a place
where we're gonna find evidence

of extraterrestrials on Earth.

NARRATOR: Is it possible that
the remote islands of the Pacific

are in fact the last remnants

of the lost continent
of Lemuria?

While ancient astronaut
theorists suggest

that this region
of the world was home

to an advanced
extraterrestrial civilization

many thousands of years ago,

curiously, there is one group
of Pacific Islands

where all manner
of strange phenomena

are still reported today.

Roughly 1,300 miles northeast of Australia

lie the Solomon Islands.

This archipelago spans
over 11,000 square miles

and is made up
of more than 900 islands,

the largest of which
is Guadalcanal.

During the 1940s,

this island became known
as the location

of one of the fiercest battles
of World War II.

But for locals, Guadalcanal
is famous as the site

for all sorts
of unexplained phenomena,

including orbs of light,

UFOs, and strange beings.

There are mysterious legends
all over the Solomons, actually.

There is always a reference

to beings
other than human beings,

that, in this world,

human beings
are only one type of being

that live along
with other kinds of beings,

like little people
or small people

or people who are
both human beings

as well as taking the form
of animals as well

and that there is
always an interaction

between human beings
and these other beings.

A lot of the stories
from Guadalcanal

tend to talk about giants.

Giants are often portrayed
in different ways.

Sometimes they are
benevolent giants.

They help people.

They look after people.

But there are stories
about giants killing people

and taking over things.

So, giant is a major character

in a lot
of the Guadalcanal stories.

VIEIRA:
The legends of the Solomon Islands

for centuries have been
that there were giants

in these dense jungles
and mountain regions.

These giants are reported
to be from ten to 15 foot tall.

They have strange supernatural
abilities and strength,

and the islanders report
a malevolent side to them.

KABUTAULAKA:
The giants are described

as beings with long hair
and big foot.

But they have special power
in that they can move fast.

They can fly
through the air as well.

People talk about this
not only as just stories-

they think that giants
actually exist.

NARRATOR:
Could Guadalcanal really be home to giants?

And if so,
where did they come from?

Some residents believe

the reports of giants
on the Solomon Islands

are related to the frequent
appearance of mysterious lights

flying around
Guadalcanal's largest volcano.

The Solomon Islands
are famous for UFO activity,

and it centers around a mountain

in the middle of the island

that's remote,
where no one lives.

But people claim to see UFOs

coming in and out
of that mountain.

TIM SWARTZ:
The local people have seen for centuries

a glowing object that is seen
to come from a nearby mountain

and then enter the ocean.

They refer to this
as a dragon snake.

These objects are seen to enter
the waters around this area

and then come back out again

and then disappear
into the nearby mountain.

KABUTAULAKA: I've heard a lot
of people talk about seeing lights

that they cannot describe,

that it either flies overhead

or they see lights in the ocean
coming out of the ocean

and then flying overhead.

NARRATOR:
While many reports of strange encounters

on the Solomon Islands
date back decades,

even today it remains

one of the world's
most active UFO hot spots.

SWARTZ: There's been so many
sightings of UFOs around the Solomons

that in 2024 there was a UFO
information and research center

set up to compile
all of these reports.

There is a possibility
that UFO activity

occurs around the Solomons

because they are so remote.

VIEIRA:
These are isolated Pacific Islands.

And, in fact, 70% of the Solomon
Islands is virgin rainforest,

which is where most
of the encounters come from.

NARRATOR:
Do the many accounts of giants,

mysterious lights, UFOs,

and other strange phenomena

reveal that the Solomon Islands

have long been a site
of extraterrestrial visitation?

And if so, why here?

Perhaps clues can be found
in the region's unique geology.

HENRY: The Solomon Islands are
located in the famous Ring of Fire,

which is noted for having
high levels of electromagnetism

and strange phenomena occurring.

And now we have frequent reports
of these light objects

or even craft that are emerging
from within the ocean.

And it tells us
there's something going on

in this region

and that perhaps this is

where we want to really start
looking for evidence

of extraterrestrial activity.

Could it be that the tectonic activity

around the Pacific Islands

have attracted extraterrestrial
visitors for millennia?

Ancient astronaut theorists
suggest

that examining
modern-day encounters

alongside prehistoric mysteries

may reveal
that the Pacific Islands

are not simply a destination
for otherworldly beings

but a home base.

In the Southwest Pacific Ocean,

1,100 miles north
of New Zealand,

lies the Kingdom of Tonga.

Most of Tonga's 170 islands
are uninhabited,

but the main island of Tongatapu

is home to more
than 74,000 people

and has become
a popular tourist destination.

But while Tongatapu has become
more strongly connected

to the modern world,

it is best known

for a mysterious
ancient megalithic structure

called Ha'amonga 'a Maui.

ROBERT SCHOCH:
Ha'amonga 'a Maui is this wonderful

stone trilithon in Tonga.

"Trilithon" means that it's made
out of three huge stone blocks.

These are carved
from the local coral limestone.

Each of these blocks weighs
an estimated 30 or 40 tons.

So this is
an incredible engineering feat

that's found on Tonga,

and we don't know
that much about it.

For the Tongans, it is like
the symbol of their island.

And it's unique
on the island, too.

It's just the one trilithon.

NARRATOR:
While Ha'amonga 'a Maui

is the only megalithic trilithon
in Tonga,

similar trilithons
can be found in Greece,

Malta,

Egypt,

and, most famously,
at Stonehenge in England.

WHITEHILL: The trilithon
has been referred to

as the Stonehenge of the Pacific

because of the massive stones

that were used
to construct this thing

and because of
their celestial orientation.

NARRATOR:
Tongan legends say that this trilithon

points in the direction
of Pulotu,

the place of the gods.

And while Western scholars
believe

the structure was erected by
a Tongan king around 1200 AD,

the locals say
it was built by Maui,

a giant demigod

who transported the stones
from Wallis Island,

roughly 500 miles north
of Tongatapu.

PALAITA:
Ha'amonga is the stone monolith structure

that identifies
our connection to Maui.

Maui is considered a demigod.

Maui is revered as someone
that was able to bend the wind.

SMITH:
How Maui brought

these huge monolithic stones
there,

the stories vary.

Sometimes
he magically flew them there.

Sometimes he put them
in a really big boat

and rowed them there.

HENRY:
When talking about evidence

for an advanced
extraterrestrial civilization,

we can point to the trilithon.

This is supposed to have been
created with an advanced race

that has an ability
to manipulate stone

where they can levitate them and
place them wherever they like.

NARRATOR:
Is the megalithic trilithon on Tongatapu

a physical remnant of
an extraterrestrial civilization

that inhabited the region of
Oceania thousands of years ago?
