and rice that we had with us.

And so I shared
my kanemochi with Kenkichi.

We laughed together, half-joking,

a quiet life in a small hut in the hills,

just outside of the village.

By the time I arrived,
the entire hut had burned to the ground.

Fumi was inside.

Her body had been consumed in the fire.

After examining it thoroughly,
I found she'd been stabbed in the heart.

Next to her body,
lay Kenkichi's woodcutting knife.

It is said the soul of a Matagi

can be found
within the blade of his knife.

I searched for him,
but Kenkichi was nowhere to be found.

Kenkichi!

I searched for him like a man possessed.

But he was gone.

Kenkichi! Get out here!

If you're here, come out, Kenkichi!

Finally, one day,

I heard a rumor that
he had gone to Hokkaido

to join the Seventh Division.

[woman] Genjiro! [sobs]

[brother] Genjiro, wait! Wait! [groans]

there was a worn-out man.

But he was so drenched that
you couldn't make out his face.

And then I saw
that he was wearing a white sash.

And I knew immediately

that he was part of
the previous night's suicide corps.
