afraid to take thy wife Mary

unto thyself, for it by
the power of the Holy Ghost

that she has
conceived this child.

And she will bear a son
whom thou shalt call Jesus.

For he is to save his
people from their sins.

NARRATOR: Behold, the
Virgin shall be with child.

And she will bear a son.

And they shall call him Emmanuel
which means God with us.

[BIRDS CHIRPING]

[STREET NOISE]

-Where is he who has been
born the King of the Jews?

-We watched his star
rise out in the East.

And we have come
here to worship him.

[HORSE WHINNYING]

-And in what place will he
be born this Christ child?

-At Bethlehem in Judea as
was written by the prophet.

-In thou Bethlehem
of the land of Judea,

thou art far from the least
among the princes of Judea.

For out of thee
will rise a leader

who will be the shepherd
of my people Israel.

-Go now and inquire
carefully for the child.

But when you have found
him, bring me back word

so that I myself may
come and worship him too.

-Arise, Joseph, take the
child with his mother

and flee into Egypt.

For this is the one who was
spoken of through the Prophet

Isaiah when he said
there is a voice, one

Prepare ye the way of the Lord.

Straighten out his path.

Who was it warned you
o generation of vipers

to flee from the terrible
vengeance that is approaching?

Do not presume to
say in your hearts

we have Abraham for our father.

I tell you, God has
power to raise up

children to Abraham out
of Eve's very stones!

The ax is all ready against
the roots of the tree

so that every tree which
does not bear good fruit

will be hewn down, and
cast into the fire!

I have baptized you with water
for your repentance, yes,

but there is one following
after me far mightier than me,

such a one that I am
not even worthy to carry

his shoes for him.

He will baptize you with the
Holy Ghost and with fire.

He holds his winnowing
fan ready to sweep

his threshing floor clean.

The wheat he will
gather, gather it

into the granary of the Lord.

But as for the chaff,
he will burn it

in a fire that can
never be quenched!

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-It is I who ought to
be baptized by thee.

And does thou come
to me instead?

-Let it be so for the present.

It is well that we should
fulfill all proper observances.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

NARRATOR: This is my beloved
son in whom I am well-pleased.

-If thou art the
Son of God, turn

these rocks into
loaves of bread.

-Man cannot live by bread alone.

But there is life for
him in all that proceeds

from the mouth of God.

-If thou are the Son of God,
cast thyself down to Earth

for it is written he has given
charge to his angels concerning

thee, and they will hold
thee up with their hands

less thou shalt chance
to trip on a stone.

-It is also written
that thou shalt not

put the Lord thy
God to the proof.

-I will give thee
all of this if thou

will fall down and worship me.

It is written thou shalt
worship the Lord thy

that abode in darkness

have seen a great light.

For men abiding in a land
where death overshadowed them,

Come follow me.

I will make of you
fishers of men.

-James and John, sons of
Zebedee, come and follow me.

-The harvest is plentiful,
but the laborers few.

Pray the Lord to whom
the harvest belongs

for more laborers
for the harvesting.

Peter, Andrew, James, John,
Phillip, Thomas, Simon,

Bartholomew, Thadeus, James, the
son of Alphaus, Matthew, Judas

Iscariot, you shall be the
laborers for the harvest.

Remember, I am sending you out
to be like sheep among wolves,

and so you must be
wary of serpents

and yet remain
innocent as doves.

Do not put your trust in
men for they will hand you

over to the courts of
judgment and scourge

you in their synagogues.

And you will be brought
before governors and kings

on my account so that
you can bear witness

before the man
before the Gentiles.

Only when they
hand you over thus

do not consider anxiously
what you are to say

or how you are to say it.

Words will be given you
when the time comes.

It is not you who speak.

It is the spirit of your
father that speaks in you.

And you will be hated by all
men because you bear my name.

Yet there is no need to
fear those who kill the body

but have no means
of killing the soul.

Fear him more who has the power
to ruin body and soul in hell.

Are not sparrow sold
too for a penny?

And yet, it is impossible
for one of them

to fall to the ground without
your Heavenly Father's will.

And as for you, he
takes every hair of you

head into his reckoning.

Do not be afraid, then.

For you count for more
than a host of sparrows.

Do not believe that
I have come to bring

peace here to the earth.

I have come here to bring
not peace but a sword.

I have come to set
man at variance

with his father and the
daughter with her mother

and a daughter-in-law
with her mother-in-law.

For man's enemies will be
the people of his own house.

He is not worthy of me who
loves son or daughter more.

He is not worthy of me who
will not take up his cross

and follow me.

He who secures his
own life will lose it.

It's the man who loses
his life for my sake

that will secure it.

[WEEPING AND WAILING]

-Lord, if it be thy will, thou
has the power to make me clean.

Be thou cleansed.

tell no man of this,

heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they

shall be called children of God.

Blessed are they who suffer
persecution for justice sake,

for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when men
revile you and persecute you.

And say all manner
of evil against you

falsely because of me.

Rejoice and exult because
your heavenly rewards

shall be great.

Thus did they persecute the
prophets who went before you.

-Which one of you, if
your son asked for bread,

would give a stone?

Or if he asked for fish
would give him a serpent?

Therefore, if you
as much as you are

evil are able to give good
gifts to your children,

would not your
father in heaven be

more ready to give wholesome
gifts to those who ask?

Therefore, all that you
wish others to do unto

you even so do you
also unto the others

because that is the
law and the prophets.

-Think not that
I've come to abolish

the laws and the prophets.

I have come not to abolish
them but to perfect them.

-You are the salt of the earth.

But if the salt
loses its strength,

what is there to salt it with?

It is no longer of any use.

It is to be thrown out
for men to trod underfoot.

You are the light of the world.

If it is set high on a
mountain, no city can be hidden.

Neither do men light a lamp
and put it under a bushel,

but rather on a lamp
stand so as to give light

to all the people in the house.

-Do not lay up
treasure on the earth

to be eaten by moth
and rust or where

thieves can break in and steal.

But lay up treasure for
yourselves in heaven

where there is no
rust or moths to eat

it or thieves to
break in and steal.

No man can serve two masters.

For either he will hate
the one and love the other

or devote himself to the
one and despise the other.

You must serve
either God or riches.

But when thou givest alms,
thy left hand must not

know what is given by the right.

For thy giving of
alms is to be secret.

Thy father who sees that
which is done secretly

shall thus set thy recompense.

-You have heard that it was said
an eye for an eye and a tooth

for a tooth.

But I say to you not
to resist the evildoer.

And if a man smite
on the right cheek,

let him smite also on the other.

You have heard that it was said
a man should love his neighbor

and hate his enemies.

But I say to you,
love your enemies.

Pray for those who persecute
you in order that you may become

your Heavenly Father's
children who makes the sun

to rise on the evil and equally
on the good, who makes his rain

to fall on the just and
equally on the unjust.

Do not judge others or you
yourselves shall be judged.

As you have judged, so you will
be judged by the same rule.

Awards shall be
made to you as you

have made award
in equal measure.

But why does thou
see the speck of dust

which is in thy brother's
eye, but yet does not

consider the beam
which is in thy known?

Moreover in praying, do not
multiply the words and phrases

in the manner of the
heathen, for they think

that by saying a great
deal they shall be heard.

Do not be like unto them.

Your Father in heaven
knows well what

your needs are even
before you ask.

Therefore, you
prayer shall be thus.

Our Father who art in
heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done on
Earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day
our daily bread,

and forgive us our
trespasses as we

forgive those who
trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Therefore I say to you, do
not be anxious over your life.

How you shall support it, nor
even for the body how you show

clothe it.

For is not life itself a
greater gift than food?

And the body more than clothing?

The birds of the
air never sew nor do

they reap or gather the
grain into the barns.

Your Father in Heaven
feeds them even so.

Have you not an
excellence beyond theirs?

But which of you for
all of his anxiety

is able to add to his
height one cubits growth?

And as for clothing,
why are you anxious?

Look at the lilies of the field.

Consider how they grow.

They do not spin,
neither do they toil.

But I say to you, even
Solomon in all of his glory

was never arrayed
like one of these.

If God so clothes the
grasses of the field

that live today but tomorrow
will feed the ovens,

why then how much more
you, o you of little faith.

Do not fret then asking what are
we eat or what are we to drink

or what are we to put on.

It is for the heathen to busy
themselves with such things.

But you have a father
in heaven who knows well

that you need all
of these things.

Seek then the Kingdom
of God and his justice.

And all these
things will be given

to you without
your having to ask.

Therefore, be not
anxious over tomorrow.

But let tomorrow fret
over its own needs.

Sufficient unto the
day is its own trouble.

Enter by the narrow gate.

For wide is the gate and
broad on the way that

leads one to his
own destruction.

And many there are
who enter that way.

But the gate is exceeding
small and the way

is narrow which leads to life.

And few there are who find it.

Father who art lord in
heaven and Earth, I give thee

praise that thou has hidden
all this from the [INAUDIBLE]

and revealed it to
the little children.

Be it so father since this
[INAUDIBLE] thy sight.

My father has entrusted
everything into my hands.

None knows the son
truly except the father.

And none knows the father
truly except the son and those

to whom it is the son's
good pleasure to reveal him.

Come to me all you that labor
and are heavenly burdened,

and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon yourselves
and learn from me,

for I am meek and
humble of heart.

And you will find rest for
your souls for my yoke is easy

and my burden is light.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-Look, thy disciples are doing
that which it is not lawful

for them to do on the sabbath.

-Have you never read what
David did that day when

he and all the others who were
there with him were hungry?

How he went into the
sanctuary and began

to eat the loaves
of proposition,

although neither David nor
any of those who were with him

could lawfully do so
but only the priests?

Or again, have you
not read in the law

that on the sabbath days
the priests in the temple

break the sabbath
and none blames them?

But I tell you,
there is one standing

here who is greater
than a temple.

And if you knew what
these words signified

I desire mercy
and not sacrifice,

you would not so easily
judge the innocent.

The son of man has even the
sabbath at his disposal.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-Is it lawful to
cure on the sabbath?

-Which of you if he had but one
sheep would not take hold of it

and lift it out if it fell
into a pit on the sabbath?

And of far more value
than a sheep is a man.

To do good is not unlawful
then on the sabbath.

Cast thy crutches
away from thee.

Do not make it known that
thou has been healed.

So that the words
spoken by the prophet

Isaiah may be fulfilled.

Behold my servant whom
I have chosen my beloved

and whom my soul
is well pleased.

I will lay my spirit
upon him, and he

shall proclaim judgment
among the Gentiles.

He will not protest and cry out.

None shall his voice
in the streets.

He will not [INAUDIBLE] the
staff that is already crushed,

or put out the wick that still
smolders until the time comes

when he crowns his
judgment with victory.

And the Gentiles will put
their trust in his name.

-He has to be done away with.

We must find a way.

-This is a desert place and
the hour is already late.

-Send the people away so
they can go to the villages

and buy food.

-They do not need
to go away, for you,

yourselves, can give them food.

-We've here only five
loaves and two fishes.

-And bring them to me here.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-I wish to pray.

Go across to the
other side before me.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-A phantom.

-Take courage.

It is I. Do not be afraid.

-Lord, if it be thee truly, bid
me come to thee over the water.

Why does thou doubt?

coming was foretold?

Or must we wait for another?

-It is John who bids that we
ask is it thy coming that was

foretold or must we
wait for another?

-Go tell John what
your ears have heard,

what your eyes have seen of
a lame walk, of a blind have

sight, lepers become clean,
the deaf hear and the dead

become alive and the poor
hear the word of God.

Blessed is the one to whom it is
given to have faith in my work.

[GOATS BLEATING]

-When you went forth
into the desert,

what was it you expected to see
a read trembling in the wind?

What did you expect
that you would see?

A man wearing soft,
fine garments?

But those who fine garments
dwell in the houses of kings.

What was it then that
you expected to see?

A prophet?

Yes, and something more I
tell you than a prophet.

This is the man of whom it
was written behold I send

my messenger before
thee who is to prepare

the way for thy coming.

And I say to you among those
born of woman that there has

never risen a man greater
than John the Baptist.

And yet, the least in
the kingdom of heaven

is greater than he.

Ever since the time of John the
Baptist, the kingdom of heaven

was open to force.

And the forceful are even
now making it their prize.

Whereas all the prophets and
the law before John's time

could only speak of
things that were to come.

And this, I tell you, if
you will make room for it

in your minds that
he is that Elias

whose coming was prophesied.

Listen you that have
ears to hear with.

But to what shall I
liken this generation?

It is like children sitting
in the marketplace who

call to their companions and
say, we have piped to you

and you have not danced.

We have sung dirges and
you have not mourned.

But when John came, he
would neither eat nor drink.

And they said of him
that he is possessed.

When the son of man came,
he ate and drank with them.

And of him they say,
here is a glutton.

He loves wine.

He a friend of
publicans and sinners.

It is by her own children
that wisdom is vindicated.

Woe to you cities in which
I have performed miracles

and you have not repented.

Tyre and Sidon would have
repented in sackcloth and ashes

long ago if the
miracles done in you

had been done there instead.

But I tell you it shall go
less hard for Tyre and Sidon

than for you on the
day of judgment.

And thou Capernaum, does thou
hope to be exalted to heaven?

Thou shalt be
thrust down to hell.

-Can this be the son of David?

-It is only through the
consent of Beelzebub,

prince of devils, that
he casts the devils out.

-He who is not with
me is against me.

And who does not gather
with me that man scatters.

Therefore, I say unto you there
is pardon for all other sins

and blasphemies of men,
but not for blasphemies

against the Holy Spirit.

-Master, grant to us
some sort of sign.

-Is a wicked and unfaithful
generation that demands a sign.

No sign shall be given it for
the sign of Jonas the prophet.

For even as Jonas was in the
belly of the fish three days

and three nights so
will the son of man

be three days and three nights
in the heart of the earth.

The men of Nineveh will rise up
with this generation on the day

of judgment and will
condemn it, for they

did penance when Jonas
preached to them.

And behold, a greater
than Jonas is here.

The queen of the South will
rise up with this generation

on the day of judgment
and will condemn it,

for she came from
the ends of the earth

to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

And behold, a greater
than Solomon is here!

-Thy mother and
thy brother and I

are without waiting
to speak with thee.

-When an unclean spirit
has gone out of a man,

it roams about the desert in
search of a resting place.

And finding none, it
says, I will go back

to my own dwelling
from which I came out.

And it comes back to
find that dwelling empty

and swept out and
neatly set in order.

There upon, it goes
away and brings

in seven other spirits,
more evil than itself.

And together they enter
in and dwell there.

And the last state of that man
becomes worse than the first.

-Thy mother is here.

She is with thy brethren.

-Who are my mother and
who are my brethren?

Behold!

My mother, my brethren.

Whoever does the will
of my Father in Heaven,

that is my brother
and sister and mother.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

[TOWN NOISE]

-How did he come by this
wisdom and these lyricals?

-Is not his mother called Mary?

And his brothers
are they not James

and Joseph and Simon and Jude?

-And his sisters, do they
not all live near us?

-Then how is it that all
of this has come to him?

son of the carpenter?

-A prophet is not without
honor, except in his own country

and in his own house.

-Good master, so that
I may win eternal life,

tell me, what good
work shall I do?

-Why would thou
ask me about life?

One there is who is good.

He is God.

Thou would enter into life,
keep thou the commandments.

-Which ones?

-Why these.

Thou shalt not kill
nor commit adultery.

To steal, thou must not,
nor bear false witness.

Honor thy father and mother.

And love thy
neighbor as thyself.

-All of these laws
I have observed.

What more do I lack?

-If thou which indeed
be perfect, give away

all thou hast so the
kingdom of heaven

shall be where they treasure is.

Then come back and follow me.

Men, I say to you,
with difficulty will

a rich man enter into heaven.

And further I say to you, it
would be easier for a camel

to pass through
the eye of a needle

than for a rich man to
enter the kingdom of heaven.

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

-Away!

I Go!

Leave the Lord in
peace, children.

-Let the little children be.

Do not keep them away
from me, for it is to such

as these belongs the
kingdom of heaven.

to the other side.

-Lord, let me first
go and bury my father.

-Do thou follow me?

Leave the dead to bury the dead.

-Master, I will follow
thee wherever thou goest.

-Foxes have dens and
the birds have nests.

But the son of man has
no where to put his head.

NARRATOR: Now all thy gates
shall echo with laments.

All thy cities ring with cries.

All Philistia swoon away.

From the north, a smoke
comes ever nearer.

In the streets, men walk
girded with sackcloth.

[INAUDIBLE] square
echo with loud

crying that breaks into tears.

-Who do men say
the son of man is?

-Some say thou must
be John the Baptist.

-Others say Elias.

-Others say Jeremiah.

-Or another prophet.

-But who do you say that I am?

-Thou art the Christ, the
son of the living God.

-Blessed art thou,
Simon, born of Jonah,

for not through flesh and blood
was this revealed to thee,

but by my father
who is in heaven.

And I say to thee that thou
art Peter, and upon this rock

I will build my church.

And the gates of hell will
not prevail against it.

And I will give thee the keys
of the kingdom of heaven.

And whatsoever thou
shall bind on earth

shall be bound in heaven.

And whatsoever thou
would loose on earth

shall be loosed also in heaven.

Do not tell any man
that I am the Christ.

Now you must know that I
am going up to Jerusalem.

There I will suffer many things
from the elders and the scribes

and even from the chief priests.

And there I will
be put to death.

-Never, Lord, to thee no
such thing could befall.

-Get thee behind me, Satan.

In my path [INAUDIBLE] stone.

For these are the thoughts
of man, not of God.

If any man wishes to come my
way, let him renounce self.

Let him take up his
cross and follow me.

The son of man is to
be betrayed and given

up into the hands of men.

And they will kill him.

But on the third day,
he will rise again.

-Who is the greatest in
the kingdom of heaven?

-Amen, I say to you,
unless you turn and become

like little children,
you will not

enter the kingdom of heaven.

He is greatest in
the kingdom of heaven

who humbles himself
like this little child.

And whoever receives one
such little child for my sake

receives me.

But for whoever causes sin in
one of these little ones who

believe in me, it were
far better for him

that a great millstone
be hung around his neck

and he be cast into
the depths of the sea.

Woe to the world
because of scandals,

for it must needs be
that these scandals come.

But woe to the man through
whom scandals come.

If thy hand or thy foot is an
occasion of failing to thee,

cut it off and cast
it away from thee.

Better for thee
to enter into life

crippled or lame than
to have two hands

or two feet when thou art
cast into the eternal fire.

Tell me this, if a man has
100 sheep and one of them

has gone astray, does
he not leave those 99

others on the
mountainside and go out

looking for the one
that has strain?

And if by good
fortune he finds it,

he rejoices more I say
to you over that one

than over the 99 which
never strayed from him.

-Lord, when my brother
sins against me

how often have I to forgive him?

Up to seven times?

-I do not say to thee seven
times but 70 times seven.

[MUISC PLAYING]

-We are going now to Jerusalem.

And there the son of
man will be given up

into the hands of the chief
priests and the scribes.

And they will condemn
him and put him to death.

And these will give him up
into the hands of the Gentiles

to be mocked and
scourged and crucified.

But on the third day,
he will rise again.

-Go into the village there,
the one that faces us.

The first thing that
you will find there

is a she-ass teethered
and a colt by her side.

Untie them and bring them to me.

And if anyone says
anything to you,

you must say the Lord has need.

Immediately, he will let you
have them without more ado.

-It is Jesus, the son of David.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-It is written, my house
shall be a house of prayer,

but you have made o
it a den of thieves.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

[CHILDREN YELLING]

-Dost thou hear what
these are saying?

-Yes.

Have you never read in the
structure out of the mouths

of babes and sucklings
thou has perfected praise?

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-May no fruit ever come
from thee hence forward.

-But how could it
wither so quickly?

-Amen, I say to you if you
have faith and waver not,

not only will you do what I
have done to the fig tree,

but even if you shall say to
this mountain arise and hurl

thyself into the sea,
it shall be done.

And all things
whatsoever you ask

for in prayer you shall receive.

-What is the authority by
which you do these things?

-And who was it
that gave it to you?

-I too have a question
to ask of you.

If you can tell me the
answer, I will tell you

in return what is the authority
by which I do these things.

The baptism of
John, can you tell

me whence it came from
heaven or from man?

-If we tell him it
was from heaven,

he will ask us then why did
you refuse to believe in John?

And if we say it
came from man, we

have reason to be
afraid of the people

for they all look upon
John as a prophet.

We are unable to answer.

-Then you will not
learn from me what

is the authority by
which I do these things.

What of this, once there
was a man with two sons.

To the first one,
he spoke thus, away

with thee, my son, and
work in my vineyard today.

And the son responded,
very well, I will do so,

but he never did.

And the father turned
to the other son

and spoke to him, likewise.

The second son refused
his father's bidding.

But afterwards, he
relented and went.

Now which of the two
fulfilled his father's will?

-Of course, the second one.

-Yes, believe me the
publicans and the harlots

are much farther along
the road to the kingdom

of heaven that any of you.

For when John came among you
following all do observances,

he could win no belief from you.

But the publicans believed in
his words and the harlots also.

And you, even though you
witnessed this, even then,

you refused to repent and
believe that his work was good.

Hear now one more parable.

There was a rich man
who planted a vineyard.

He walled it in and dug a wine
press and built a tower in it.

Then he let it out
to some vine-dressers

while he went on his travels.

When the appointed
time drew near,

the man servants
were made to visit

the vine-dressers to
claim his revenues.

Where upon the vine-dressers
laid hands upon his servants.

One they beat.

One they killed outright.

The third they stoned.

And he sent other servants
on a second errand,

more than he'd sent at first,
but they were used no better.

Finally, this man sent
to the vine-dressers

his only son and the belief
they might respect his son.

But when the vine-dressers saw
the son approaching they said

among themselves if
we capture the son

we may keep for ourselves
the inheritance.

And l hands upon
him, they killed him

and cast his body forth
from the vineyard.

And now when the
master of the house

returns, what will he do
to these vine-dressers?

-When the master
of returns he will

exact retribution from them.

He will destroy them and
let out the vineyards

to others who will give
him the fruits thereof

which are his due.

-In the scripture, you
have read these words.

The very stone the
builders did reject

has become the cornerstone.

This, then, is the Lord's doing.

And it is marvelous in our eyes.

I tell you, then, the Kingdom of
God will be taken away from you

and given out to a people
who will make it bear fruit.

And whosoever shall fall upon
this stone shall be broken

while he who lies under it
will be ground into powder.

For many are called
but few are chosen.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-Master, we know well
that thou art's sincere.

and that thou words teach
sincerely the way of God.

And we know too that thou
holdest no one in awe

and make little of
the distinctions

between different kinds of men.

Tell us then what
thinkest thou of this.

Is it indeed lawful to render
tribute to Caesar or not?

-Why do you put me to
the test, hypocrite?

How pay you this tribute?

With what coin?

Whose name does it bear
and whose likeness?

-Caesar's.

-Well, then render
to Caesar what is

Caesar's and to
God what is God's.

-Master, of which in all
the laws would you say

is the greatest commandment?

-I would say thou
shalt love the Lord thy

God with thy whole heart
and with thy whole soul

and with thy whole mind.

This is the greatest of the
commandments and the first.

And the second it's
like, thou shalt

love thy neighbor as thyself.

-Scribes and Pharisees
have established themselves

in the place from which
Moses used to teach.

Do what they tell you then.

Continue to observe what they
tell you, but do not imitate

their actions, for they tell
you one thing and do another.

They fasten up packs
to heavy to be borne

and lay them on men's shoulders.

And they themselves will not
stir a finger to lift them.

They act always so as to
be a mark for men's eyes.

Boldly written are
the texts they carry.

And deep is the hem
of their garments.

Their heart is set on taking
the chief places at table

and the first seats
in the synagogue.

And having their hands
kissed in the marketplace

and being called rabbi
among their fellow men.

But you are not to claim
the title of rabbi.

You have but one master.

And you are all brethren alike.

Now are you to call any
men on Earth your father.

You have put one father.

And he is in heaven.

Nor are you to be
called teachers,

for you have but
one teacher, Christ.

Among you the greatest of all
is to be the servant of all.

And the man who exalts
himself will be humbled.

And the man who humbles
himself will be exalted.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-Woe to you scribes
and Pharisees,

you hypocrites that shut the
door of the kingdom of heaven

in men's faces.

You will either
enter yourselves not

let others enter
when they would.

Woe to you scribes
and Pharisees,

you hypocrites
that encompass sea

and land to gain a
single proselyte.

And then make the
proselyte twice as

worthy of damnation
as yourselves.

Woe upon you blind leaders
who say if a man swears

by the temple it
goes for nothing.

If he swears by the gold in
the temple his oat stands.

Blind fools!

Which is greater, the
gold or the temple

that consecrates the gold?

And again, if a man swears by
the altar, it goes for nothing.

If he swears by the gifts on
the altar, his oath stands.

Blind fools!

Which is greater,
the gift or the altar

which consecrates the gift?

A man who swears by the
altar swears at the same time

by all that is on the altar.

The man who swears by the temple
swears at the same time by him

who has made it
his dwelling place.

And the man who swears
by heaven swears not only

by God's throne, but by
him who sits upon it.

Woe upon you, scribes
and Pharisees.

You hypocrites that will
award to God his tithe that

would be of mint
or dill or sesame.

And have forgotten the
weightier commandments

of the law-- justice,
mercy, and honor.

O you did ill to forget one duty
while you performed the other.

You blind leaders.

You who have
strained out the gnat

while you have
swallowed the camel.

[YELLING]

-Call upon you
scribes and Pharisees,

hypocrites that scour the
outward part of cup and dish

but all within is running
with avarice and incontinence.

Scour the inside of the cup and
dish first thou blind Pharisee

so that the outside
too may become clean.

Woe upon you scribes and
Pharisees, you hypocrites,

that are like whitened
sepulchers, bare and outward

show when they are
full of dead men's

bones and all manner
of corruption within.

You too seem exact over your
duties outwardly to men's eyes

while there is nothing within
but hypocrisy and iniquity.

O to you hypocrites who build
up the tombs of the prophets

and engrave the monuments of the
just while you cry with pride,

if we had lived in
our father's times

we would not have taken part
in murdering the prophets.

And just so you bear witness
of your own ancestry.

It was your fathers who
slaughtered the prophets.

It is for you to
complete your father's

reckoning, serpents
that you are.

Brood of vipers.

How then will you escape
from the judgment of hell?

And now behold!

I am sending
prophets and wise men

and men of learning
to preach to you.

Some of them you will
put to death and crucify.

Some you will scourge
in your synagogues

and persecute them
from city to city

so that you will make yourselves
answerable for all the blood

of just men that is
shed on the earth.

From the blood of the innocent
Abel all the way to the blood

of Zacharias, son
of Barachias whom

you slew between
temple and altar.

Ah, believe me, this
generation shall

be held answerable
for all of it!

Jerusalem, oh Jerusalem,
still murdering the prophets

and stoning the messengers
that are sent to thee.

How often have I been ready to
gather thy children together

as a hen gathers her
chickens under her wings.

And thou did refuse it.

And now look to your houses
which are left to you

desolated.

I say to you, you
will see nothing of me

hence forward until the time
when you will be saying blessed

is he who cometh in
the name of the Lord.

[MUSIC PLAYING]

-Do you see onus?

Believe me, there
will not be one stone

left on another in this place.

It will all be thrown down.

-We must bring him within
our power, but cunningly,

of course.

And put him to death.

We shall wait till
after the feast.

Otherwise, there could be
disturbances among the people.

-What's the sense of this waste?

This ointment could possibly
have been sold for much money

and given to the poor!

-But why do you vex
this poor woman?

Where was the evil in
what she did for me?

The poor you have
among you always.

But I am not always among you.

In pouring this
ointment over my body,

she was preparing
me for my burial.

I promise you in whatever
part of the world

this gospel is proclaimed,
the story of this woman

will be told in such a way
that the memory of what she did

will be preserved.

-How much will you give me
if I had him over to you?

-30 pieces of silver.

of you will betray me.

-It is that one who

But woe to that man by whom

For that man it were better

Take ye of this and eat,
for this is my body.

The new covenant is
being shed for many unto

the remission of sins.

And I say to you, I
shall henceforth never

drink of this fruit of
the vine until the day

when I shall drink
it new with you

in the kingdom of my father.

Tonight, all of you will
lose courage because of me

for so it is written.

I will smite the shepherd
and all of his flock

shall be scattered.

But after I have risen, I will
go before you into Galilee.

-Even though all others should
do so, I will deny thee never.

-Amen, I say to thee,
during this night

before the cock crows,
thou shalt deny m thrice.

-Although it should mean to
die with thee, I will not.

For all those who take up the
sword will perish by the sword.

Or does thou suppose I cannot

than 12 legions of angels?

How then are the scriptures to
be fulfilled that thus it must

take place as
against a robber you

have come out with swords
and clubs to seize me.

I sat with you daily
in the temple teaching

and you did not lay hands on me.

But all of this was
so ordained to fulfill

what was written
by the prophets.

-Master?

-Oh my friend, on what
errand does thou come?

-Let those who would
accuse him come forward.

What hast thou then
to accuse this man of?

-This man said I have the power
to destroy the temple of God

and raise it again
in three days.

these men bring against thee?

I adjure thee by the
living God to tell us

whether the Lord Christ
son of the living God.

And moreover, I tell
you this, hereafter

you shall see the son of man
sitting at the right hand

of the power and coming
upon the clouds of heaven.

-He has blasphemed!

need have we of witnesses?

they bring against thee?

and as is usual on this day,

I shall release a prisoner,
one of your own choosing.

Whom do you wish that
I release to you?

Barabbas or Jesus whom
they call the [INAUDIBLE].

-But what am I to do then with

It concerns you only.

NARRATOR: Hearing you will
hear, but not understand.

And seeing you will
see, but not perceive

for the heart of this
people has been hardened.

And with their hears they
have been hard of hearing.

And their eyes,
they have closed.

Lest at anytime they
see with their eyes

and hear with their ears and
understand with their mind.

-My God, my God, why
has thou forsaken me?

Elias for help.
