a pair of binary stars.

The closest stars to Earth.

Ever since the invention
of the radio telescope,

we've been listening
to them for signs of life,

but all we've ever heard is static,
you know, random noise.

But what if it isn't random?

What if there's a pattern?

We just haven't seen it?

See, everybody is looking
at the numbers,

they're trying to decipher

a sequence in
the binary code, but...

there isn't one to be found.

There's a third star...

in that cluster.

A tiny, red dwarf,
Alpha Centauri C,

otherwise known as
Proxima Centauri,

hidden in the night sky by the
brightness of her twin sisters.

The code's not binary.

It's trinary.

- Trinary?

- Yes, see, our numbers
are base ten,

because as luck or
evolution would have it,

we have ten fingers.

but their numbers are base three
because of the three stars.

For example, in trinary,

101 equals 10.

Once you know that,
you have the key to the code.

You can unravel the message.

- What's the message?

- You know what,
do you want some tea?

Yeah, I'm gonna make tea.

- Edgar.

So, I can't believe
I'm gonna say this again,

what's the big message
from the stars?

- "The future is a mystery;
it is the strange dark."

- That's the message.

The message is the key
to unlock that mystery.

And that is what the message
of the stars taught me.
