within six years of its inception the

Gestapo had grown from a regional secret

police force into a crucial element in

the rise and expansion of the Third

Reich

under the guidance of its shadowy

success in crushing resistance to Hitler

on direct orders from the security chief

Reinhard Heydrich and his deputy head of

the Gestapo Heinrich Mueller attention

had been mounting along the border

between Germany and Poland the German

press had reported multiple allegations

of polish provocation all of them

spurious Alfred Knox was a security

officer and a Gestapo command and later

was happy to describe the part he played

that night I was directed to go to

climates with five or six SD men and

wait there until I received a code word

from Heydrich

Knox was waiting for the codeword

be the key to German control over all
