[Josh]...to explore a Wild West
ghost town said to be crawling

with actual ghosts.

Vulture City, Arizona,
has a horrifying history.

[Damian]
This is the hanging tree.

They had what's called
tiptoe hanging.

It was a very slow,
very painful death.

[Heather] Holy!

[Jack] That is
absolutely insane!

[Josh] Reportedly filled with
not just gunslinger spirits,

but things that are even more
ancient and evil.

So when you go to a location,
you fear the ghosts,

but what happens when
the ghosts fear something else?

[Josh] Are Heather and Jack
ready to face high noon in hell?

ghost hunting skills here.

You've also brought a case
for us to investigate.

I have.

So, I get people reaching out
to me all the time,

saying, hey, I've got this
great location

and there's one place
that has stood out to me,

and it's called Vulture City.
It's in Arizona.

It's this really old
mining town,

and they allegedly are having
some pretty wild activity.

Some might say
a real shootout between

the living and the dead.
- Hmm.

I've actually heard
of this place.

This is way out in the desert
in Arizona, right?

And it is one of the best
preserved ghost towns

in America.
Emphasis on ghosts.

Yes, very much so.

[Josh]
It's 1863.

Arizona has just become
an official U.S. territory.

And deep in the Sonoran Desert,
a prospector named

Henry Wickenburg is
searching for gold.

He hasn't found any,

and he's also
starving to death.

As the legend goes,
he shoots a circling vulture.

[gunshot blasting]

And as he staggers toward
his first meal in days,

he discovers that
the rocks where it fell

are streaked with gold.

Wickenburg establishes
Vulture City on that very spot.

And it becomes
Arizona's most productive

gold mine in history.

A reported 340,000 ounces
are ripped from the ground,

worth more than
a billion dollars today.

[gunshot blasting]

Fortunes rise fast,
but so does the body count.

In Vulture City,
raids and murders

are terrifyingly common.

- [gunshot blasting]
- [scream]

Dozens are hanged for stealing,

while bloody shootouts
claim hundreds of lives.

[gunshot blasting]

But the Wild West residents
don't just blame the sins

of man for all this bloodshed.

They whisper that darker,

more ancient forces
are at work...

that the land itself is cursed.

There are endless
tragic accidents.

A deadly flood
devastates the town.

There's a diphtheria outbreak
that claims the lives

of dozens of children.

No one is immune
to the misfortunes,

even Henry Wickenburg.

The town's founder gets
swindled out of his fortune

and then out of his life.

His body is discovered in 1905
with a bullet in the head.

In 1923, desperate thieves
are picking away at the last

visible gold
in Vulture City's mine

when the entire
section collapses.

Greed made them dig
their own graves.

By the mid-1940s,
the depleted mine is shut down

and Vulture City
becomes a ghost town.

An apt description since
it's reportedly rife with

paranormal activity.

Recent visitors report
hearing phantom voices,

and seeing objects
hurled by unseen hands.

A porcelain doll is said to be
possessed by a demonic spirit.

[eerie music plays]

Some witnesses
even claim they've seen

giant shadow figures
march through town.

[off key notes play]

Have the horrors
of Vulture City's Old West past

gone wild once more?

Or is it something
older at work?

Feasting on its victims
like a vulture.

Amazing stuff.

You may have hit the paranormal
motherlode here, Jack.

- Some might say goldmine.

Let me tell you, this
city's history is all about

greed and hatred.
Those are powerful emotions.

So it's totally possible
that those can leave

a paranormal imprint
on Vulture City.

The thing that really strikes
me is that this land could've

been cursed long before cowboys
and their six shooters even

turned up.

[Jack] Oh, wow.

Now I'm about to go up a hill
on a horse in the middle

of the Arizona desert.

Whoa.

[Heather]
Here we are, Vulture City.

[western chords play]

[Heather]
Vulture City ghost town
is deep in the Arizona desert,

northwest of Phoenix.

[western chords play]

[Jack] It's just like
going back in time.

[horse neighs]

I think Damian should
be right up here.

[Jack]
The man in black.

[Heather]
Damian Harris is
an Arizonan historian

and longtime tour guide
here at the Ghost Town.

- [Jack] You must be Damian.
- Yes, I am.

- Welcome to Vulture City.
- [Jack] Thank you.

[Heather]
This is incredible.

[Jack] Will you tell us a little
bit about the dock history

of Vulture City?

Yes, well, back
in the, especially the 1860s,

1870s, there was no law.
This was the Wild West.

In 1863, a Prussian prospector

by the name of
Henry Wickenburg found gold.

And with gold,
that brings greed.

And with greed,
it brings murder.

It brings jealousy.
It brings hate.

[screams]

[Damian]
Matter of fact, stealing gold
was the quickest way to end up

on this tree back here.
This is the hanging tree.

- This right here?
- [Damian] Yes.

They say 18 men were hanged
on this tree that we know of.

Mmm, who are some of the people
that you know of that were hung?

So the only name that
I know of was Juan Ramos.

Juan was kind of an outcast.
He wasn't a miner.

He didn't work
in any of the stores.

He kind of took a liking
to a young girl,

but she didn't
reciprocate the feeling.

And so one night,

he decided since "I can't have
her, nobody else can,"

he attacked her
and murdered her.

But the townspeople caught
him right here in the center

of town, and so they took him,
they dragged him over here

to the tree, strung him up.

They had what's
called tiptoe-hanging.

They put the rope around
their neck and hang them up

until they were on their toes.

It was a very slow,
very painful death.

- Oh.
- Terrific.

- [Damian] Yes.
- That's horrible.

That's gonna leave
a residual energy

on this space.
- Yes.

Why do you think
we should focus our energy

during our investigation?

One of the places where
there's a lot of activity

reported is the brothel.
The piano will play on its own.

- [Jack] Oh.
- [off key notes play]

People report objects
actually thrown

completely across the room.

And then there's also a lot
of reports of people hearing,

like, old music playing.
- [Heather] Oh, wow.

A little further away
from town,

just to the north of here,
is the old schoolhouse.

The schoolhouse has
especially a dark history.

It opened in 1881, and in that
first year, over 20 children

died from diphtheria.
- Oh, that's tragic.

But people to this day will
report the sound of children

playing and laughing.
- [laughter]

I personally had one of
the most scariest experiences

here at the schoolhouse.
- What happened?

There's this doll
in the schoolhouse.

And I went to pick her up
to move her.

And all of a sudden, I became
just completely paralyzed.

My vision just went
to tunnel-vision.

It was like I was looking
through straws.

And I just couldn't move.

The only thing
I could do was talk.

And I said to the other people
that were here, I said,

"I cannot move.
Please come get this doll."

And then they came, they took
the doll out of my hands.

As soon as they took the doll
out of my hands, I was fine.

[Jack]
Interesting.

All right, well, it sounds
like we have plenty

to investigate
here in Vulture City.

Oh, yes, yeah.

[Heather]
As Damian walks off into
the sunset, we grab our gear

and set up our command post in
one of the historic buildings.

Let's get cracking.

I'm gonna go run
cables and cameras.

- You got the monitor set up?
- Yeah, copy that.

[Jack]
All righty.

[mysterious music plays]

[Heather] Jack covers the town
with our surveillance cameras.

- OK, I'm at the hanging tree.
- Copy that.

Starting with the hanging tree,
where Vulture Cities condemned

spent their grisly
final moments.

We also monitor the brothel,
said to be home

to phantom music and violent
poltergeist activity.

And just outside of town
is the schoolhouse,

where people have heard
children's voices.

[child laughs]

- [Jack] How's that look?
- [Heather] Looks great.

You got the whole room covered.

And Damian claims
a haunted doll paralyzed him

when he tried to move it.

[ominous music plays]

That's where Jack heads first.

[Jack]
Let's go to school.

[mysterious music plays]

There's the paralyzing doll.

Note to self-- don't carry it
out of here.

I'm going to do this
flashlight experiment.

It's kind of like a
call-and-response.

You use the flashlights
for yes-or-no questions,

you know, turn on for "Yes,"
do nothing for "No."

Try and get
an objective response.

Because if the REM pod is
going off at the same time

as the flashlight,
that's not a coincidence.

If the answer is yes...

[Heather] This stuff is just
here in what could have been

its actual original layout.

It's wild.
Look, here's a piano.

- See?
- [chords strike]

OK, it works.

[whispering]
OK.

I thought, wouldn't it be
interesting if we use this

replica old-timey gramophone
as a trigger object?

It's Bluetooth,
so I can play old-timey tunes

and maybe we'll get
some activity.

[mysterious music plays]

[normal voice] In addition to
the gramophone trigger object,

Alright.

I also roll out a couple
of cat balls and a rim pod as

I try to communicate with
whatever it is that may be

haunting the brothel.

[beeping]

This is Heather.

Is there anyone here with me?

If you touch that REM pod,
it'll light up.

I'll know you're here.

I have something
that may be familiar.

Does this music make you happy?

- [beeping]
- [Heather gasps]

[Jack] I want you to turn that
flashlight on one more time.

That's freaky.

OK, so you just made
my flashlight go off again.

to move the doll?

[intriguing music plays]

All right, so I'm gonna move
the doll to near the REM pod.

See if that can draw
something in.

So allegedly, Damian
was carrying this doll,

and he was
paralyzed momentarily.

The only thing he could do
was call out for help.

- Oh!
- [beeping]

[ominous music plays]

Are you-- are you the spirit
that did that to Damian?

Is that why you're
lighting up right now?

[beeping]

OK, all right,
I'm gonna move the doll.

I'm gonna bring the doll
over to the red light.

[mysterious music plays]

Are you inhabiting the doll?

Were you once alive
and now you live in the doll?

Or you're attached to the doll?

the flashlight turn on.

If you're powerful enough
to paralyze someone,

you can turn that flashlight
on when I ask you.

I asked the REM pod
to go off, it went off.

I asked the light

intelligent response
from whatever is here.

paralyzing me.

- Knock, knock, knock.
- [knocks on door]

- [Heather] Hey.
- How we doing?

[Heather]
We're doing.

So, I scrubbed all the way
through, got to the point about

where I thought it happened.

- Ready?
- [Jack] Let's do it.

[Heather] I want you
to focus on this area.

OK.

That's so insane.

[mysterious music plays]

That is wild.
It, like, flies forward.

And then the cat ball
is going off.

- I mean, it looks like
something just, like...
- Flips forward.

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

Wow!

And that's a solid
glass window behind it, too.

[Heather]
There's no draft.

It looks like something
comes up behind it.

[Heather]
Yeah.

It's like a smeared blob, yeah.

[Jack]
Yeah.

What a great bit of evidence!

I mean, I certainly don't have
an explanation for it,

except there was something else
in that room with me.

[Jack] This has been
quite the active night.

[Heather] Right?
The sun's coming up soon.

[Jack]
I think my takeaway from
being here is we should probably

dig deeper into the history
of this place.

[Heather] Yeah, we need
to know more about this land.

[Jack]
Yeah.

[Heather] The next morning,
Jack and I call Gates

to update him on our very
eventful evening.

Hey, Josh, how's it going?

Hey there, how are my favorite
ghost rustlers?

There's actually been
a ton of activity,

which has been awesome.

Yeah, and much of it
confirms what people claim.

Jack had crazy activity
in the schoolhouse with

a flashlight experiment,
and in the brothel, I saw

a picture of Henry Wickenburg
forcibly get knocked over.

OK, Wild West indeed.

Any idea what's
causing the chaos?

Well, I'm kind of running with
the theory here that there's

more than one entity.

And there's possibly some
that aren't even human.

You mean what, demonic?

Maybe, but I don't know.

I had a very weird encounter
with a possibly possessed doll.

All right, that's definitely
one for the memoir.

But look, I'm really
intrigued by this idea of

something non-human.

I've been digging
into this legend that the land

under Vulture City was cursed
long before the miners

or cowboys arrived.

And I've connected with
a local expert who shared

these age-old stories
of really disturbing creatures

in the region.

He even claims to
have had his own encounter.

And I'm sending him
your way now.

Awesome, I'm excited
to meet him.

Yeah, that sounds amazing.

[Heather] That afternoon, we
meet up with Gates' contact

in the middle of town.

- You must be Shanclen.
- Nice to meet you.

Shanclen is a member of
the Navajo Nation.

His lineage on this land
traces back centuries.

So, what can you tell us
about the activity here?

It's ancient.

You have the spirits
here in Vulture City, yes.

Normal ghosts of people
have died from sickness,

at-work accidents, or just
of old age here in Vulture City.

But there's
another layer to it.

In our creation stories,
we used to have monsters,

beasts that roamed the land.

So, we had warriors that would
go out and slay this monsters,

and they had to put
those monsters somewhere.

Now, each tribe all had
their sacred lands that

they used to put
these monsters in.

Vulture City is one of
those places.

- No way!
- Yeah.

So, unfortunately,
when the U.S. government

came and relocated
a lot of the Native Americans,

they relocated
the guardians, too.

They were no longer
allowed to come here.

So the story goes, evil saw
this as an opportunity.

"Hey, there's somebody
walking this way.

"Let's entice him with this
quartz crystal in front of him.

"Let's entice him to start
digging up all this evil

that's here."
- [Jack] Henry Wickenbug.

[Shanclen] Yes.

When he started digging,
when he started doing this

mining stuff, that's when,
in a sense, the evil energy

started coming out of
Vulture City itself.

So all of these horror stories
of violence and murder

and crime, these evil spirits,
this evil energy could be

partially to blame?
- Yes, 100%.

Those monsters that were slain
here mainly are the giants.

So, this is the photo of one of
our sand paintings that we have

illustrating Ye'iitsoh, which is

what we call big giant
in our tribe.

[Jack] Has anyone ever
witnessed those giants here?

[Shanclen]
So, on one of the tours,
in one of the locations,

there was a table that was
covered in a layer of dust.

They all witnessed handprints
manifest on this table of dust.

It branched out into an arm
and into a body.

And sure enough, it branched
out and went into another arm

that led to another hand,
into a W form.

And I have this photo.
Do you guys want to see it?

- Yes.
- I'd love to see that.

- Oh.
- No way!

That is wild.

[Shanclen]
This image looked exactly
like one of our sand paintings.

Ye'iitsoh...

One of our big giants
that we have.

[Jack] Did it look like
a giant-sized hand,

or was it kind of average human?

It was pretty big hands,
like bigger than

the average hand for sure.

So where did those
hands appear?

Inside of the bunkhouse.

The bunkhouse is said to be
the meeting place of

these spirits.

So the spirits that
were here showed this

to-- to the people
here of this town.

As a warning?

As a warning that
the giants are here.

And so the spirits
called for help.

They said, "We're in danger."
These deities are the ones that

come and prey
on the normal spirits.

So when you go to a location,
you fear the ghosts,

but what happens when
the ghosts fear something else?

So sometimes, you know,
these giants will come

into the town at night,

and they would
pick off the spirits.

So when the sun goes down,
the spirits all go inside

the buildings to hide.

Do you think we
need to be scared?

I would say if any place
were to give you fear,

this is the place.
It's dangerous.

Please be careful tonight.

[Heather] That night,
we head to the bunkhouse,

where Shanclen's
disturbing photo was taken.

[Jack]
The old mining bunkhouse.

Shanclen said,
the spirits are known to

gather here, not to haunt,
but to hide from something

far more terrifying.

[Jack] Man, these things,
like, hold the heat.

[Heather] OK.

So, I brought glow-in-the-dark

UV dust to see if we can--
- [Jack] OK.

To see if we can capture
the same evidence

of the Ye'iitsoh?
- [Heather] Why not?

This stuff is super reactive
to a black light.

It'll glow.

And if this demon has already
shown himself on the desk of

a table, maybe this
will trigger him to come back

and we can see it ourselves.

- Ooh.
- Oh, yeah.

If spirits are hiding in here,

I want to try to give them
a voice using a special

communication technique known
as the Estes method.

Ooh, chills.

- OK, so there's evil here.

A very, very deep voice, "Yes."
Almost a growl.

"Juan."

Mmm.

Who's Juan?

It's he someone we need
to know about?

[Jack]
Yes.

[exhales deeply]

Can you tell us how many people
or how many spirits

I ca-- there-- there are
so many voices.

Do you all hide
in the bunkhouse?

A little child's voice saying,
"Yeah."

[Jack] Are there
a lot of children here?

"Yes."

[Heather exhales deeply]

"Help!"

[Jack]
Are they scared of the giants?

They're-- oh-- ugh--
"We're watching."

- "Angry."
- Who's watching?

The giants?

"Here."

[ominous music plays]

"Evil."

Scary.

[ominous music plays]

Should we be concerned?

"Go."

Do you want us to leave?

"Yes."

"Turn off."

"Go away."

"We're done."

[Jack]
That was wild.

[Heather sighs]

- You OK?
- [Heather] Yeah.

Did any of that
make sense to you?

[Jack]
There was probably a dozen
times where I would ask

a question and instantly
you would say something that

would answer the question.
Like, there's no mixing it up.

- [sighs] Really?
- Yeah.

There's a lot
of different voices.

I mean, I can understand what
Shanclen was saying now

because he runs the gambit.

From children's voices to
women's voices to men's voices.

You said "Juan"
and then you said "Sí".

You know what
I just remembered?

Juan Ramos is the only name
known of someone who was hung

on the hanging tree.

- That's crazy.
- Yeah.

[Heather] I mean, I think we got
to go over to the tree.

[Jack] I think we should
absolutely go over to the tree.

We'll come back and check
on this before the end

of the evening.
- OK, yeah, that's a great idea.

[Jack]
OK, so we have these
awesome light panels,

and the way that these work,

they're essentially
like a REM pod.

- [Heather] Nice.
- But they're light panels.

- [Heather] OK.
- So if anything
with an EMF frequency

passes through them,
they'll light up.

[Heather] Brilliant.

Jack lays his EMF light panel
on the ground where more than

a dozen people were
brutally executed.

If Juan Ramos
truly let us out here,

then we could be facing off
with one of the darkest souls

in Vulture City's history.

While we have these light

Wickenburg's original cabin.

We were just led to this tree.

you touched the lights.

It looks like it's trying.

It just disappeared.

to touch the lights

he shared cryptic clues about

its location, but no one
has ever found it.

In the centuries since,
the search has claimed

the lives of more than
30 treasure hunters,

fueling rumors of
a deadly curse.

But when it comes to the legend
of the lost Dutchman's mine,

there's a potential plot twist.

You see, some say the mine
never existed at all.

They argue that Waltz
fabricated the story

to cover up the true source
of his wealth,

stolen gold from Vulture City.

I don't know
which story is true.

I just know that Jack
and Heather better bring me

back some serious nuggets.

That sounded like something
was being dragged

across the floor in there.

That was really weird.

That sounded like something

[Josh] The team was unaware
of it at the time,

but outside,
under the hanging tree,

the light panels Jack
had set up were activating.

As if whatever powerful force
they heard on the roof

continued stomping through
the streets of Vulture City.

But there was much more strange
evidence that the team mined

in this Wild West ghost town.

In the former brothel Heather
had a terrifying encounter.

[Josh] At the time,
she believed she was

communicating with the town's
founder, Henry Wickenburg.

But after analyzing
her recordings,

she discovered an EVP
of another name.

Is there anyone here with me?

[EVP] Jack.

[Josh]
Heather identifies it as Jack.

At first, she thought
it referred to

her investigation partner.

But further research revealed
it could be Jack Swilling,

a gunslinger and business
partner of Henry Wickenburg.

Swilling was considered
a Vulture City fat cat.

It's highly likely
he frequented this brothel.

Did he have a grudge against
Wickenburg, one strong enough

that it still violently
continues a century later?

- [Heather screams]

[Josh] Heather believes there's
plenty of proof of human spirits

haunting the town.

Does anyone want to come
and introduce themselves?

[Josh] But what about evidence
of a more ancient evil,

the forces that are said
to curse the land itself?

What happens when the ghost
fears something else?

[Josh]
While investigating reports of
powerful giants, the team left

UV powder on the bunkhouse
table to try to catch

a hand imprint which had been
documented before.

[Jack] Yeah, I don't think
we got anything.

[Heather]
I don't either.

[Josh]
The powder didn't pan out,
but there was another

stunning revelation to come.

On reviewing
their IR camera footage

from throughout the town,
Heather spotted this strange,

huge shape cast on the exterior
of the bunkhouse.

[ominous music plays]

It was captured at the very
moment the team was placing

the powder inside,

as if something was
watching them.

Heather and Jack do feel
increasingly certain that

Vulture City is still
in a shootout,

not just with cowboy ghosts,
but with things far older,

stranger, and larger.

And speaking of shootout

before Heather
and Jack saddled up,

they had their own score
to settle.
