by the hundreds of dime
novels that were written

about their favorite
Western heroes.

Thus much of our Western
lore is the product

of the imagination
of a few writers,

one of whom was a man
named Edward L. Wheeler,

who created the most
amazing hero of all

and caused...

I'’ve had all of you
I can take!

and get lost!

Ten years ago,
I'’d have baptized you
in that horse trough.

Don'’t give me any ideas.

It'’s a good thing
my friend Kit Carson
ain'’t here to see this.

He'’d have waxed
your wagon pretty!

Ugh...

Uh, I'’ll take
my business elsewhere.

Trouble, Hughie?

No, Mayor. He ain'’t
a bad sort really.

He just keeps coming
in my place

telling the wildest,
tallest yarns you ever heard.

Then an argument starts,
and the fight'’s on.

I don'’t think I know him.Nobody does.

He lives in a shack
back in the hills somewhere.

Just comes into town to brag
and shoot off his face.

Say, is that meeting still on?

Yeah,
we'’d better get over there,
or we'’ll be late.

Morning, Sheriff.Morning, Mayor.

Frank. I guess we all
know why we'’re here.

Just for the record,
I'’m going to ask Hughie
to explain

why he asked
for this special meeting.

This problem we got--
it gets worse with every
stage that stops here.

First thing people wanna know
when they get off the stage is,
"Where is Deadwood Dick?"

Had three of those travelers
in my office yesterday.

When I told them
there wasn'’t any Deadwood Dick,
they called me a liar.

Yesterday afternoon,
a man and his wife
stopped in my place

looking for Deadwood Dick.

Said they traveled
over 200 miles out of their way

just to get his autograph
and buy him some champagne.

I sure missed that sale.Well, I have a suggestion.

Why don'’t we just
put up a sign
at the stage depot

saying there is
no Deadwood Dick--

except in the mind
of that writer, Wheeler,

that publishes
the stories about him.

That would make
the travelers madder.

I'’ll tell you one thing,
the problem'’s gonna get worse

the more books
this Wheeler writes.

The town of Deadwood
is gonna make a lot of enemies

and lose a lot of money
in trade.

Well, let'’s face it, friends.
We are Deadwood.

You'’re the law, banker,

you own the hotel
and half the town.

Sort of gives us the right
to take steps.

Will you get
to the point, Ev?

All right.
What hurts Deadwood hurts us.

And right now,
no Deadwood Dick
is hurting business bad.

That'’s our problem.
But what'’s our answer to it?

I thought
I made a suggestion.

We simply put up a sign
saying there is
no Deadwood Dick.

Frank, we want to make them
happier, not madder.

That'’s right.

What if the real Deadwood Dick
were to meet the stages?

Who are you talking about?

The biggest bragger and liar
in the Dakotas,

the man you just
threw out of your saloon.

as he will be from now on,

[ grunts ]

[ laughter ]

with the Indians.

once owned all this country.

And then when gold
was discovered out here,

just come in anyway

from the Indians

and drove them
away from his home,
and everything like that.

As a matter of fact,
Buffalo Bill and me

considered very seriously
of going to Washington

and having a visit
with the president
about this injustice.

[ stagecoach approaching ]And we was--

Uh-oh. Here comes the stage.
[ laughs ]

Listening to a pack of lies
about Buffalo Bill, no doubt.

I see you'’ve told my sister

There'’s an eastbound stage

So, you see,
Dick'’s leaving anyway.

And your efforts to protect
the town'’s young minds

were completely wasted.It'’s not over yet.

Once that old fake of yours
gets with Buffalo Bill,

he'’ll be in the eyes
of the entire nation.

And when
the truth is told,

as it is bound to be,

think of the disgrace
to Deadwood

and Frank and
especially my brother!

I simply can'’t understand
how you can do this to us!

to get us off the hook.

he claims to be.

[ gunfire continues ]

[ whispers ]

stopped firing.

[ laughing uproariously ]

Leaving to join
Buffalo Bill'’s
Wild West Show.

It'’s farewell, friends,
but not good-bye.

Deadwood Dick
toured the world
with Buffalo Bill.

Eventually, he returned
to his beloved Black Hills,

and when he died
in 1929,

the citizens of Deadwood
blasted him a grave

in the rock,
and buried him there.

Truly a legend of his time,
and a memorable figure

in the great history
of the West.
