Growing up, Top Of The Pops was the be-all and end-all.

I think our first performance was one that sticks in the mind,

only because we had to stay in...

Well, not only. There were several reasons... Not a hotel.

We stayed in the hotel... Wow! I think it was St Martin's Lane.

And they'd given Yog a room which had a bed

which was about four foot long, and his...

His legs hung over the edge! ..feet were hanging over the end!

And he had a really, really awful night.

But... Things changed. Things have changed. ..eventually...

He got the emperor bed in the end. THEY LAUGH

We were always dancing, way before Wham! ever came into the equation.

And George and I were dancing.

I remember dancing with him

and he was really taking it seriously -

"Under my arm, over there!"

And then this little clearing happened around us,

and I remember thinking, "Oh, he really likes this attention."

And I hadn't seen that in him before. Mmm!

So that's kind of how I accidentally became in Wham!

The record company wanted us to go out and present, perform...

The songs. But we didn't have a band. How? Yeah, how?

So the only way that we could do it

was to sort of present as...

We'd utilise the dance routines,

have that as the basis for how we presented...

I mean, I joined when you first started doing the big tours.

Before that, Dee C Lee was part of the band -

and she went on to work with Style Council in her own career -

and then I joined just before the tour started.

So I had to learn all those dance routines... They weren't that hard!

But I remember, we used to practise, and I used to dance with Andrew.

And he'd be really...

You'd be really enthusiastic and my arm would be going

and all the rest of it. But it was great. I just loved it.

I mean, being on tour and doing...

The first song we used to go on with was Young Guns. It was fantastic.

And the crowd used to go hysterical -

with the cowboy outfits and the cowboy boots.

That was my favourite.

Watching Top Of The Pops at home with my parents and my siblings,

it was like the highlight of the week, one of the highlights of it.

And when I finally got to be on... I was actually...

Not necessarily disappointed,

but it wasn't as glamorous as it was made out to be.

It was a lot of hard waiting.

Well, they wanted you there 7am, didn't they?

Yeah. Yeah. There's never been so much waiting...

Well, maybe in Waiting For Godot, but not for... It was extraordinary.

It was an all-day experience. I remember the black shiny floor...

Yeah. ..thinking, "I'm going to fall over." Yeah.

"I'm going to slide! My heels won't..."

And the audience and how they had to get out of the way of the cameras.

What it verified to my parents was that,

"Oh, that's what she does," you know.

"She's a professional." I'm a professional!

It changed my life.

I remember, once you had been on Top Of The Pops,

being recognised after that and thinking, "I don't like this."

Yeah. Didn't like being recognised.

Things have changed, haven't they?

MUSIC FADES

The first songs that Yog and I wrote,

after he'd auditioned for an outfit in Edgware and... Hold on.

George Michael auditioned for another band? Yeah, so...

Yeah, yeah, so... I didn't know that! Did you know that?

The thing is, he had such a great voice,

you just wanted people to hear him, so the idea that he was going

to audition for a band was a good thing.

He didn't really like the auditions that he'd been to -

I don't know how many there were -

and it was like, "Well, what are we going to do?"

"Well, why don't we just write some songs?"

It's what we had been doing anyway.

And the first three we wrote were Wham Rap!, Club Tropicana

and Careless Whisper.

We didn't have a name and we were really struggling for a name.

And it was kind of sitting there, and we thought,

"OK, we'll use Wham! until we've got something better."

But how did that come about? Well, we had the song Wham Rap!,

and Wham Rap!... "Wham, bam, I am the man..." Man.

But I remember before you wrote Wham Rap!

in your mum's living room, your mum and dad's house,

the song started about McDonald's.

You were just rapping about burgers and milkshakes and apple pies.

Food! I can still hear... I'm not going to sing it,

but I can still remember where Wham Rap! kind of came from!

You don't remember that? No, that's not a memory...

Cos all you used to eat was the hot apple pies and root beer...

Food! ..and that was the lyrics -

And it was all, like, being on the dole and...

And that was in your mum and dad's living room.

Club Trop was just a few chords that I put together,

and the lyric was... Wasn't it about the clubs?

Yeah, it was all about the clubs.

It was specifically about Beat Route, really,

and so it was a bit of a...

It was a bit of a pastiche and a wry look at,

you know, the whole sort of suspension of reality...

Were Tropicana drinks free? Were they free?

Well, I don't know that we had any money to afford drinks.

They were never free.

My best memory of Club Tropicana is Yog saying,

"We're going to Ibiza to film it." Oh, that was amazing.

Iconic, that video. And then he went out a week...

Cos the '80s was all about the tan and he loved his tan.

And then I liked my tan, so I went about four days after him,

and we spent some time, and we went to Pikes Hotel,

which is still out there now.

But that was Dee C Lee in the video, not Pepsi. That's right. No.

And I'd never been anywhere so stunning.

Club Tropicana was special for us in some ways

because it was the first single that wasn't on that,

in that kind rap/chorus structure

that Wham Rap!, Young Guns and Bad Boys were.

Yeah. It's quite unique, isn't it? It was more...

And it was a far more sophisticated and sexy representation,

you know, especially with the video of you girls. Girls in bikinis.

But then also Ibiza at the time was like the place to go

and have fun, and you know,

and like watching you two boys is what most people wanted to go

and experience in Ibiza, I'm sure.

But we did go back!

Did we? I didn't go back. Do you remember us going back

to Ibiza with Yog? Yes! With George? I didn't go.

You didn't go? No. Yeah. That was mayhem.

Lovely T-shirt.

We decided to control our own destinies from the outset

and we were very firm about what we wanted.

Because we've been proved right,

people tend to have a little bit more respect for what we think,

whereas, you know, before,

we were just two 19-year-olds with big mouths to them.

Is there no chance of cross-fading them?

Just four years on from sitting at school desks,

the pair are now at the head of an empire which they created.

I think we could get rid of Paul there, don't you?

Well, at this stage, with four hit singles and a number-one album,

I mean, how much control have you really got over your destinies?

Well, what we've always had, really, which is just about,

We do nearly everything ourselves now

I remember it was Paris, we were in France.

It was like a Paris show - where we performed, I can't remember -

And there was a moment I thought, was it about you,

I remember he played me the backing track

and it was that sort of bongo...

Why do you think the critics are inimical to you?

Why do they give you so much stick?

I think it's exactly that. I think it's because, er,

we do own up to everything that we do.

We're very honest about how we market ourselves.

We're probably the only band at the moment

who are totally unashamed of being screamed at. Er...

And I think, it's like, we do everything that everyone else does,

only everyone else is very subtly camouflaging

their ways of selling themselves,

and we just think, you know, there's no reason, that you don't have to...

It's not insulting your public to do it and to tell them you're doing it,

because they enjoy it just the same way.

Marketing is marketing, and image is image.

No-one thinks that's really us. Yeah. I think deep down,

I don't think anybody thinks that

we're what we portray ourselves to be in our videos or anything.

But because we make it so obvious that we're mucking about,

I think people... We, like, blow other people's cover,

and it's irritating to a lot of people.

The British pop duo Wham! have become the first Western group

to appear in China.

This afternoon, 12,000 Chinese fans packed

the Workers' stadium in Peking,

though they had a problem saying the name.

The nearest they get is "wei meng" which means brave and audacious.

Even a year ago, music like this in China was still being

denounced as cultural pollution.

Today, disco is in, as long as, officials say, as it's healthy,

uplifting and vigorous.

Wham! obviously qualifies.

It's just so brilliant to hear how Wham! kind of came about.

It was never... It wasn't sort of, like,

like a corporate idea, it wasn't

an idea that came from... It wasn't manufactured.

it was just a natural progression of two guys, you know, following their

passion of, like, pop music and wanting to write that iconic song.

And, erm, I think this is what people can see

and understand, that they love.

Yeah, but, you know, you gals, when people think of Wham!,

they do think of us - me and Yog - but they also think of, you know,

the videos. The fans all wanted to be us.

I never know how to take it when girls say, "Oh, you had the job...

or if they hate me for it.

Wham! have finally got a Christmas number one with Last Christmas.

We made a video that we are celebrating now, Andrew.

Who would have thought? Well, actually, that's a very good point.

Probably wouldn't have thought, 40 years ago.

When I hear the song, it sounds as good as it did

when I first heard it. It hasn't dated, the video hasn't dated.

They come hand in hand to me, the video and the song. Mm.

And it is the start of Christmas.

But I also feel really proud that I was part of that and that, you know,

George has written such a timeless, classic song that's going to

be here always. Yeah.

You know, when you say classic, you know,

you hear the melody, you hear the synth, the vocal comes in.

It's like, you know, also, with the fans,

they knew where they were when they first heard it as well.

So it's not only nostalgic for us,

it's for those who'd got the original single, as it were.

And for us to talk about it, you know, we're also talking

about George, we're talking about our friend, we're remembering him,

and it's just lovely to be able to be part of something

so iconic, I suppose. It's extraordinary, really, how

it has... I mean, it was always going to, because it's

such a brilliant song, and not just a brilliant song,

but it's a brilliant record as well.

It's the best recording of that song. There'll never be

a better version... I agree. ..whoever does it.

It just has a particular magic

that won't be replicated.

And it so brilliantly evokes Christmas, and I think, recently,

in the last five years, ten years, maybe, but it's become so much...

Or at least, my awareness of it. I might be wrong, I don't know,

but it seems that it has woven itself into Christmas in a way

that perhaps other Christmas songs haven't, insofar as it represents

the Christmas season, the start of the Christmas season.

It defines the Christmas season. It's a kind of happy/sad song. Yeah.

That's what's the odd thing. It is a happy song, but it's sad.

And I think George's vocal is so beautiful that it just resonates

with everyone. And I think it depicts a time where people,

you know, feel they need to come together with friends and family

and have fun and have a good cheer and, you know,

raise your glass to the year gone by and the year ahead.

So it's like it encourages that sort of nostalgia for Christmas,

the traditional thing of Christmas. Yeah.

Well put, because Christmas is all about nostalgia, isn't it? Yeah.

Essentially, everyone has a certain received understanding

or idea of what the ideal Christmas is,

and somehow Last Christmas does represent that. Yeah.

You're right about it being a happy and a sad song. Yeah.

Obviously, the lyric, it's a lament, but the melody,

especially the bridge, with the bells, is a really pretty little...

It's so pretty, yeah. And so you have this really uplifting

sonic melody, the musical aspect.

And then the lyrical content, it's about heartbreak, isn't it?

I love looking back on that video as much as I love hearing the song.

Absolutely! Yeah.

With regard to Last Christmas, one would have hoped - certainly,

I mean, it was Yog's sincere hope and expectation -

that it would endure. And he was right.

You know, I think he knew that it was a - we all did - a classic.

Whether any of us perhaps would have imagined that it has

cemented its place in Christmas and become a part of Christmas

in the way it has, probably not, but it's testament.

And Yog would have loved that.

I think Yog would have really appreciated the fact it has

come to define Christmas for people in the way it has,

because it's affirmation of his skill and great talent,

and he would have enjoyed that. And being number one last year! Yeah.

I felt so happy. That really made my Christmas. 39 years!

But that made my Christmas, because I know that we lost him

at Christmas. Mm-hm. Oh, I'm going to cry now!
